[Q] How to reflash rooted I9000 without Market - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys,
Got myself between rock/hardspot. I'm trying to re-flash kernel on my I9000. Every time I try to flash via recovery (stock 3e), I get error saying failed E-signature verification.
I can't download any fixes from Market/Internet because of error: SIM not detected (this actually is *why* I want to reflash). However I CAN update via tar & Downloader using Odin 1.35, or from zip via stock recovery (3e). I can't flash *anything* (like ROM Manger or CWM) because of verification error above. Phone *does* appear to have CWM app installed, but it boots to stock 3e recovery *not* CWM recovery.
I spent over a week searching XDA and the web and tried many dozens of supposed solutions but can't find one that works. Most were either crapware or required Market access or ROM Manager.
Help! I have little hair left to pull out!

What he said, gets you cwm.
Plus it doesn't look like you have a modem/baseband installed, that will need to be flashed via ODIN, regardless.

Still No Joy on flashing ROM without Market
Thanks thedefault, but still no joy. Same old problem "E:signature verification failed". I tried CF-Root-XX_OXA_JVK-v2.7-CWM3RFS.zip and CF-Root-XX_OXA_JVU_2.3.6-v4.3-CWM3RFS. This is the same old problem that's driven me batty for over a week - can't flash any zips. Any other suggestions?

How to install baseband/modem
Thanks nyloncrack. Excuse my ignorance, but where do I get "basebane/modem" to install? I thought this was included in Kernel(s). Note that I can't flash any zips because of E-signature problem, can only install via Odin.

Maybe signature check is enabled by default

Signature Verification IS on
thedefault:
Yes, signature verification is always on. (At least I can't figure out how to turn it off). I read in another thread that the stock Samsung recovery (3e) checks to make sure that the file was signed by Samsung. They further advised the enquirer to roll back to version 2e which did not include this. Of course, I can't get there from here.

But with CF-Root and custom kernel a custom recovery is used. No signature check at all.

Recovery that is in use
thedefault:
I'm not *running* the "custom kernel/custom recovery" - I'm trying to *flash* them. The kernel/recovery I'm *using* is the XXJW4 kernel and Samsung 3e recovery.
BTW: One Step Forward/One Step Back
I noticed that the CF-Root zip actually contained just a tar file. Eureka!, I can use Odin to flash it! But noooooo, after I did so, phone went into continuous-reboot-loop. Arrrrgh.

I rememberd that happend to me once but I found that reinstalling a full custom rom helped me out try http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1379650 it might work out.

Well, you obviously have flashed wrong cf-root kernel. Grab one that goes with your current rom (jw4, right?). Just flash correct kernel with Odin and it should work just fine
And there's many good guides/tutorials in general section which should be quite straight forward stuff..

Eureka, Success!
I finally got the phone rooted and working. For the benefit of others, I describe what I did:
1. Downloaded SU_i9000XXJVT.zip (non-rooted) that I stumbled across on the web).
2. Flashed PDA+PHONE files using Odin (CODE_I9000XXJVT_CL617736_REV03_user_low_ship.tar.md5 and MODEM_I9000XXJVT_REV_00_CL1064602.tar.md5).
3. Flashed kernel again with CF-Root-XX_OXA_JVU_2.3.6-v4.3-CWM3RFS.tar.
The phone booted as root, registered on network (data+voice) and everything worked. Joy!
I think (but cannot prove) that some of my earlier problems were caused by missing or hosed modem file.
Thanks to all who contributed guidance.

[Q] Can I flash CM7 via Odin?

Would anyone be kind enough to tell me how I can flash CM7 with Odin? I tried installing Heimdall, and I cannot get past error 12, and also error 3, so IDK what is up with that. Odin works, and I've used it to flash the overcome rom before. But I don't know in what order to flash the files, or if I need to reboot and flash more files, etc.

Sorry, I forgot to mention that I tried that, and it did not work for me.
S, have you rooted the tab and installed CWM or just flashed the rooted kernel with CWM already cooked in?
Its no good just flashing to gingerbread.
Also, with Heimdall, you need to flash the drivers 1st. Its called Zadig.exe in the drivers folder. It won't work otherwise ( this will take a little while, it even says so).
If you want to go back to Samsung drivers afterwards, just put the tab into download mode again (after flash is complete) and rollback the drivers. This has worked multiple times on my PC using Windows 7 64 bit...

[Q] cwm not installing with recovery 3e

Ok so i just rooted my sgs with superoneclick and im trying to install cwm recovery but when it reboots its starts in my normal recovery (3e) and fails during install. Can someone guide me in the right direction? This is what it says:
installing package
Finding update package
Verifying update package
E:failed to verify whole file signature
E:signature verification failed
I have tried over a wifi connection and 3g but both to no avail.
Model GT I9000M
Firmware 2.3.3
Baseband I9000UGKG3
Kernel 2.6.35.7-I9000UGKG3

Build Gingerbread.GKG3
PS I have no problem flashing using odin and starting from scratch. I just want my phone to run to the best of its ability. So please reccomend the best build, rom, theme and apps to have too.
Thanks in advance to all responses.
well 3e recovery can't flash unsigned zips from recovery so try flashing another kernel via odin that has support for i9000m
Any ideas on the best kernel to flash that supports i9000m?

Since you know how to flash. Go to this link to download and flash JVT pda, kg3 modem and csc with 512pit in odin. It wont bootloop and then you can flash any jvt kernel as pda. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1102881

I am having the same problem on my Samsung Galaxy S GT-I9000.
Will the solution you have posted work for me too?
Yes. You can flash any kernel for gt-i9000 you want via odin. But make sure you flash correct version for your firmware or it will give you bootloop

Hello.
I'm having almost the same problem.
I can use the usb un the phone.
I have 3e recovery installed and i woul like to instal clockwork mode.
There's a different way to flash clockwork mode?
I've tried from RomManager but the signature is verified and doesn't work.
Thank you in advance.

Yes, it should be flashed using Odin3, together with a kernel, will work better than ROM manger, so go here and follow the instructions.

[Q] android system recovery <3e>

Ok... from the top - I've done a good amount of flashing custom ROMs (B & N Nook and Captivate) and reading on forums but I'm currently stumped. I can't boot into the ClockworkMod recovery - instead I go to the stock android system recovery <3e>. This has been my complete procedure:
1 - Odin3 one-click downloader and connect phone in downloading... mode, click "start" to go back to stock
2 - odin one click "master clear"
3 - Samsung Kies update to Android 2.2 froyo and then Android 2.3 Gingerbread
4 - One click root
5 - Put .zip of ROM on internal sd root
6 - Odin3 v1.82 load ClockworkMod Recovery .tar
Now here is where I am stuck - I have the most up to date ClockworkMod Recovery but I can't boot into anything but the stock android system recovery <3e> (either through the app or by holding volume up and down and powering on) - where if I change the zip file name to update and try to apply update from sdcard I get an error that the signature verification failed. I'd like to install the latest build of ICS but I am just stuck - any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you,
You'll need a kernel with the non-3e recovery baked in. You can either flash a Gingerbread kernel with CWM (e.g. Boog's kernel) or flash a stock gingerbread rom with CWM in the kernel.
Ok - thank you. I have downloaded that Heimdall one-click .jar file. However I'm having trouble opening it... I feel really foolish ont his but if I extract the files I see a readme file that says I shouldn't be reading it and I have gone the wrong way. But if I open the unextracted file it tries to open in WinRAR and again non of the files seem like a program file that I can just open and run. Sorry about this...
No problem - just double-click the file. The .jar is an executable file that will install the necessary drivers, open the heimdall program, and get everything ready to flash. Once it's ready and sees your phone in download mode, all you have to do is click flash and it will do the rest.
I have now figured out ICS - I think I had the wrong .zip I was trying to install... Does the ICS allow for overclocking?
Ok - my apologies again for keeping going with this (but my main goal is to get to ICS) with that kernel it wouldn't let me install ICS (but I was able to do the latest CyanogenMod). On the Team Hacksung Wiki page FAQ on Galazy S it looks like CM7 kernels don't work - did the one I installed from the above thread have a CM7 kernel?
Does anyone know of a specific kernel I can use to go from stock 2.3.5 so I can boot into ClockworkMod Recovery and install the ICS zip?
I'm sorry - I needed to update or install Java... Then I needed to install the correct drivers - automatically routed to this through the Heimdall program so it was easy enough (I think this has to do with switching between ODIN and Heimdall). Thank you again so much for the help. Time to give ICS a shot
YouTube ics video I had the same issue boog kerneral with cwm baked in it att boot loaders follow the instructions I'm using works great

Flash back to stock 2.1 which includes the 2e recovery which doesn't have signature checks. With that you can flash a cwm zip and get into the clockworkmod recovery. On the captivate you gotta reinstall the the update zip twice, once to install cwm, the other to actually go into cwm.

I wouldn't recommend flashing back to 2.1, as it is much easier to simply flash a kernel with CWM baked in.
That is also an option, both able to be done with several clicks of a button.

any help?
i try to enter to APPLY SDCARD:UPDATE.ZIP
but have the same error :
E: failed to verify whole-file signature
E:signature verifcation failed
i have galaxy i9000b
also have the superuser , 2.2.1 froyo and wanna upg to ice cream or anything new
i read i have to change the android systema recovery <3e> to 2e ??
here i found a lynck with 3e-fix-unzip-uninstall
but these is for Captivate and doesn't work for i9000b ?
Yea 3e recovery has a signature check, and clockworkmod zips are not officially "signed." Either flash back to stock 2.1 eclair which has 2e recovery w/o signature checks, or flash a custom kernel with cwm already included, as suggested above. I cannot speak for if the modded 3e recovery will work on an i9000b.

Edit: this 3e mod should work on the i9000b, and has worked great for me http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989

Android system recovery <3e>

Stupid, stupid, stupid and 1000 times stupid: 10 post rule!
I think this post should be here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1927097
Any way, I need help so I'll take it from where I can. By the way I'm not a android newbie, just N7000 newbie.
I have been last 8 hours trying to flash a new rom to my new N7000. As I'm on a mac and don want to set the "counter" of N7000, my path was going to CWN from that post.
But I'm stuck, as when I try to do a "update from sdcard" I got a:
E:failed to verify whole-file signature
E:signature verification failed
I have tried different downloads in different paths and still the same. I have a VSLB1 original firmware.
Any ideas?
Download Philz kernel (choose the correct one) and flash that through the stock recovery.
I'm up and running....I'll tell how I fix it:
1. I downgrade to an old official firmware trough Odin (just PDA: N7000ZSKJ6_N7000OZSKJ6_TGY.zip)
2. Then I rooted trough GalaxyNoteRoot/runmemac.sh (root apk didn't work)
3. Installed MobileOdinLite (you will need to download MObileODIN FLashKernel N7000 v3.0 => scroll really down on MobileOdinLite post)
4. From MobileOdinLite updated a kernel with CWM (CF-Root-SGN_XX_OXA_LB1-v5.0-CWM5.zip)
5. From CWM installed my desired rom (AllianceROM)
6. Finally, using Odin update the modem (was not working) to XXLT3
Hope this info be useful

I finally got it fixed
Hello
I finally found a copy of the I9000XXJPO firmware (the other night) and flashed my phone with it.
the phone was getting stuck on the S slash screen.
But to fix that i flashed it with I9000 dbdata.rfs file (as i had a few E fail errors showing in recovery mode too) and it booted up fine after that.
