[q] usb host (otg) - Nook HD, HD+ Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

This is first question I've had since I first started gettting into this stuff 5 years ago with my moto droid 1. Excuse me if this has been asked before but I am having a hard time with hooking up a mouse and keyboard via usb to my Nook HD. I cannot get anything to be read by the nook. I tested the keyboard on my nexus 7 2013 and it worked perfectly. I have been at this for a couple days now and this thing is starting to look more and more like a frizzbe. I have rooted and installed roms on droid 1, droid 2 global, razor m, droid eris, samsung galaxy nexus, nexus 7 2013, Nook HD. im at witts end why did my wife buy this thing... Thank you in advance for all of your help.
I figured it out. Last time I do a dirty rom flash. Now if only I had a kernal designed to save juice...

verygreen has an apk to force enable usbhost, i use it with a mouse and keyboard and it works perfectly. But you got it working to thats great.

Im way out of my depth when its matters dealing with android kernels etc, so can I use the usb switcher if I can download it * on a rooted from the device Nook HD as opposed to one running CMC from SD card. Or are there other changes compiled into the kernel needed also.
If it will work any chance the changes needed to drive a usb camera could also be packaged up for side loading?
thanks
* I kept getting server timed out

The device driver for the USB device type needs to be in the kernel.

You can download a pre-made CM10.2 SD-card image archived file cm_ovation_10.2.0-RCx_ddmmyyyy_HD_SDC_IMG.7z from http://iamafanof.wordpress.com/2013/09/17/cm10-2-jellybean-android-4-3-for-nook-hd-18sep2013/, then just unzip the file (e.g., with 7-Zip) and burn it to a SD card, and it's ready to go (assuming your HD+ can boot from SD card).
To get a sense of which USB device is supported, see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2307585.

sorry to bother you or any other nook masters on here.
I am running verygreen's kernel 3.0.31 -hummingbird-green+ jun 13 2013
cyanogen 10.1
i have usb storage in storage menu as well as apps that can mount devices and storage. I also have the usbhostswitcher app as well as another one I found on here that helps for this.
I have the female to female adapter...yet no signs of it working whether I connect a mouse, usb flash drive, etc. I bought the adapter from the ebay link from verygreen post and ordered another one from diff seller today just in case...
Any thing I need besides the apps? Also anyone get a usb - to - ethernet adapter to work for this nook?
thank you all for any input

I don't think a simple female-to-female adapter would do, you need to use a USB OTG adapter.

it has been done by verygreen with standard usb f-f.

hmm , yes you can ( /me successful a not flaming TechnicalK )
basically the 1st question I need to ask you is are you on 2.1 or on 2.01 ?
2.1 needs vulenrable recovery flashed onto it , most 2.01 dont .
Depending on the f/w version... if you do need to flash it ( using rsdlite ) then yes you need the usb cable . (pretty easy to get and cheap especially on eBay)
Otherwise just grab GOT 's openrecovery and put it in sdcard then you can have lots of fun .
you def.ly need the pc to computer the required files you need to your sd card. once your files are on the card then you can root your phone with no pc needed, but again that's after you get the files on your phone...
You def.ly don't need the pc to do the root process if that's what you meant.

Nerver heard about the cellphone's browser.
As Dag said, if your phone is already vulnerable you can easily do everything you need w/o a pc.
Not sure if it works, and its not free like the DMUpdater was (really hoping they release a new version for free), but I got this from Droid-Life. (hope thats ok)
Im not going to post the link as I dont want to get in trouble, but its $.99 and I believe its on the market.
Look on site mentioned above, its on page 2 currently (or you can click the 'root' tab uptop on site to see older news)
Easy Root- The newest 1 touch droid rooting app
Also, is the problem JUST the lack of a USB cable, or do you actually not have access to a computer? If it's the former, you can easily get the correct USB cable for less than $5 online. Just look for a microUSB cable.
And pardon my possible ignorance, but how are you charging the phone without a USB cable? If you have the stock Motorola charger, the USB cable should be detachable, and you can plug it into the computer using that cable.
Yes you can. There is an app in the market called EasyRoot. I havent used it myself, but have read reports of it working great.
Yes -- EasyRoot works great on a stock 2.1/2.2 Droid.
It uses a hotplug exploit nicely packaged in an APK.

CM 7.2 release candidate

http://www.cyanogenmod.com/blog/cyanogenmod-7-2-0-rc1-is-upon-us
It’s been a long time in the making, but it’s finally here: CyanogenMod 7.2, the latest version based on Android 2.3(.7), has reached the release candidate stage!
We’ve been delaying it for too long, mostly because new devices kept being submitted to us, and now we feel that at 69 70 devices, CM7.2 is more than ready for everybody to enjoy
7.2 adds a couple of backported features and fixes from Android 4 (ICS), over 20 new devices when compared to 7.1, and even some new features to boot (be sure to check out the new predictive contact search in the phone dialer!). We’ve also fixed some bugs along the way. Some of them device-specific, others that affected everybody, and one in particular that’s been plaguing Android for a long time: the mysteriously vanishing SD-card ringtones are no more! You can check the full list of noteworthy changes at the CHANGELOG.
As usual, you can submit bug reports on these builds: if you find anything broken in your device while running CM7.2-RC1, (as downloaded from our mirrors or ROM Manager! Please do not submit reports if your build came from elsewhere), be sure to submit a report through http://code.google.com/p/cyanogenmod/issues/ , so that we can fix it in time for the final 7.2 release.

What are the significant differences between this official CM7.2 and the unofficial CM7.2 KANG that we have been using in the last couples of months?
Excuse a noob, but is this file good for SD as well as emmc installs?
thanks
Assuming you have already got a flavor of cm7 installed on an SD card you can copy the update file to the boot partition (I did it from my PC with a card reader), then insert the card in your NC and either access your boot menu and select Reboot Recovery or boot normally and then Reboot with the Recovery option. The files unpack and the penguin is displayed. The unit shuts off and you have to restart (seems to take forever with the android boot animation but wait it out) and all should be well.

KANG 03042012, the latest, *has* CM7.2RC1 so the differences are detailed in that thread but boil down to mr666's enhancements.
For instance, I get the impression from your sig that you run Dalingrin's as a separate update. Dalingrin's has been a part of M-K,(one of the above mentioned enhancements), for a while now.

Took awhile even to get to the animation, you may have given up too soon.
I like the update, have noticed improved battery life, nice colors and screen transitions. I have twice had a glitch where it wouldn't wake up after sleeping (twice in the last few days). Hope that doesn't persist.

Actually it didn't. It's that Nook for Android released a brand new version that fixed the magazine issue. A week prior the older version still stacked all the magazines on top of each other on my 7.2 build.
How do you know if you have the latest version of the Nook app? Download some comic books, it's the first version that supports Nook Comics.

Hmm. But is the newer version not stacking on 7.1 either? I'm curious, but not enough to flash back to test, I don't think. I just had a friend switch to 7.2. A few days ago specifically because of the stacking, so that would be a good coincidental timing. Anyone still on 7.1 that can check?

I had rotated out of 7.1 awhile back and I use B&N app everyday. When they provided the new update for the app, that is when my magazines stacked correctly. The update was actually made for the tablet and the version of the new update is: 3.1.0.19.ANDTBL (and tablet). I updated when it came out and it fixed it immediately. I would think it would still work correctly on 7.1, but like you, do not want to mess with a good think.
Okay, curiosity was bugging me. I tested, and yep, no stacking on 7.1 either, guess it was a B&N fix. 7.2 is good in any case.

I did a new install to SD card with the CM7.2RC Most things work as should. Biggest issue is that after some point, the unit will not accept a charge. I plug the cable in (NC Cable/charger) and the light on the cable goes straight to green. Leaving it plugged in for awhile doesn't change the amount of charge (actually is discharging per normal use). After a power off and re-boot, all works as normal. Not sure what the trigger is that causes the Nook Color to not take a charge, but it is not locked up, all programs work normally. It will take a charge and discharge-lets say over a few days, then at some point will not allow a charge. Battery % meter seems to be accurate; tracking appropriately.
I also have a Nightly (#75 I think) SD card that I use, as well as stock Rooted 1.1 on EMMC, and neither have this issue, device is fine electronically.
Any ideas?
Thanks, Mark
Are you sure it's not the cable? They have a bad habit of going south on us.
CM7.0.3 to CM7.2 non rooted on SD card
Hello,
I'm a noob here and found that I should ask questions here on the general forum and not the developers forum.
I have very recently created a sd card non rooted using CM7.0.3 encore and have kernel version 2.6.29-omap1 and its Android version 2.3.3.
I want to keep the ability to return to B&N mode from internal memory to keep my warranty from B&N in check.
I have had issues with using the Google Market app and don't see a lot of apps that I would normally see on my Droid Bionic...like Facebook and others. I have hacked around that issue by finding apps and manually installing them as a work around which is fine for now.
A couple of questions?
By going to a nightly version...can I still remain non-rooted and keep emmc stock and intact with B&N Color flash and boot from my sd card?
will this fix my Google Market issues and have more applications that I can see?
Will I be able to just drag the new CM7.2 ??version code to my /boot directory on my sd card and go into recovery mode to boot it in?
Does this new CM7.2 ??? get put in a particular partition or just under the /boot directory?
Will this wipe out my apps or any data on my sd card?
Will this CM7.2 ??? version support USB host mode for a USB webcam for Skype?
Apparently, this opens another can of worms in that I need to provide USB power from an external hub and I need some kind of Nook Tweaks app to adjust settings?
Can someone explain this?
I have searched these forums and I must say spent a lot of time and nothing seems to be in one place or current on pre-requisites.
Should I get a second sd card to practice on so I don't wipe out my bootable CM7.0.3 version
Any help here would be GREAT!
Thanks in advance!
BB
I'm in a similarsituation as BeaconBob. The following applies to me as well.

I set up my 8GB card months ago and have forgotten all the details of flashing a ROM. Thanks for any suggestons/help.
Make sure your screen density is set to 180. Clear market cache and data, reboot, and try again.
If you don't want to spring for a new Sandisk class 4 card -- I have five now ) -- just use your Win32Disk Imager to write an image file of your current setup to your computer and go blithely on experimenting like crazy. You will always have an image file to write back to your freshly formatted sd card to take a giant leap backward. But I'd bet you'll never even use it. It's too much fun going forward.
And it never hurts to have a zipped backup of the Titanium BU files available to upload and restore at various stages.
Currently running a racks triple boot, the latest Kang cm7, a dualboot miui/stock, and somewhere I could swear I had an old 253m from back in january. Just so my NC flap doesn't break, I'm good...

[VIDEO] How to root/flash a Chromecast with FlashCast

Due to the confusion on how to setup flashcast and install pwnedcast, I decided to make a tutorial Video. Sorry for the crappy video/audio, I need a new webcam.
NOTE: this will work on a chromecast that has not been setup yet, and we recommend rooting a device before setup to prevent any accidental OTA update.

Hope this helps!
also, bonus points for anyone who finds the "teaser" in the video.
Thanks

Good Job. I was actually going to do the same tonight, guess I don't need to do it!
I also think it could be mentioned that you could just flash Flashcast and Pwned before ever setting up your chromecast (eliminates the risk of connecting a brand new Chromecast to the internet and getting the update). I just tested it out on a Chromecast I got for a family member.
Sweet! I have been trolling YouTube for the last 1/2 hour looking for just this video with no luck. Came back here and "poof", here it is!
I have 2 Chromecasts that have been sitting untouched since release day, waiting for a comprehensive tutorial. Thank you!!

What are the benefits of a rooted chrome cast
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N900A using Tapatalk
This might be OT but under the heading of what a CC noobie might do wrong!
I have a new CC but waiting on the OTG cable. I'm getting ready so I didn't have a standard USB flash drive but had a USB/xD adapter and a 1GB xD card on which I put Flashcast. After watching the video and the caution about trying to open the USB drive I decided to redo it. Win32DiskImager errors out at 97%, I forget the error number and Windows can't format it either! I was able to put it back into the camera and format it.
Just wondering if say someone tries Flashcast only to find out that they have one of the new bootloaders(which could be me too), what do they do with that USB flash drive or what will format it now? Or is it just something to do with the adapter that I used?

The biggest benefit is you get to keep your unlocked bootloader, and gain the ability to flash mods such as Kyocast to get around google's app whitelisting.

If you flash flashcast to a jump drive, and try to boot it on a chromecast that is already updated, it would stay on a black screen on your TV, and the jump drive would never format. You can just re-format the jump drive from your computer to return it to being a normal jumpdrive.
question, the other end of the OTG cable is plugged into your computer? where do chromecast get its power?

That's if your able to succeed but if it fails do to having the wrong bootloader? Are you still able to format from your PC or right after using Win32Diskimager to put the bin file on the USB drive, are you able to format, etc. then? Maybe using Win32DiskImager the second time corrupted the memory card??
in either case I must have the 3 way OTG? im asking this because I have the normal micro usb > female USB otg, there isnt a 3rd cable out to power the device. Appreciate your reply.

Well if it fails to boot due to a locked bootloader, it will not format. At that point even formatting it yourself (which would break flashcast) would not make it work as the bootloader is preventing it from booting.

For flashing the chromecast you need a powered OTG cable, but some people have reported success using a powered USB hub. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2465642

It's not the process or lack of completing that I questioned, it's the condition of the USB flash drive if it fails. It might be better to ask, if Win32DiskImager is used to place the BIN file on a USB flash drive and it isn't used to flash a CC or fails to, how or with what is used to formatted it for reuse?

The flash drive can certainly be reformatted. I've seen reports of Windows being unable to format it using the standard explorer menu option for some reason, which is a bug in Windows, IMO. The format operation is exactly the same regardless of the contents of the drive, and Windows shouldn't be looking at the contents at all. Nevertheless, it doesn't work for some reason, so what you need to do is go into the Disk Management application as described here, delete all the partitions on the drive, and then create a new FAT32 partition which takes up all the space. (If someone is willing to create a guide with screenshots, I'd appreciate it, as I don't currently have access to a Windows machine.)

Right- I understand the steps that I am supposed to do, and I actually ended up with the "11.3.2.1-root" zip you linked... I guess I just linked the wrong post.
Well without this factory cable I guess this won't be going anywhere. Oh well. Thanks for the reply.

you can build youself one, search for it, just wire the red cable with the unused pin on the back at the micro usb side
(i holded it during the flash in my left hand because I have not soldered it )

I might try it- I do have a lot of microusb cables floating around, but I also just made a realization - there doesn't appear to be any custom roms for the 2013- soho (all appear to be for 2012-tate). If I saw some for 2013 then I'd probably just say what the heck and try to make a cable but unfortunately that's a pretty big deal breaker.

USB OTG Not working sm-t805

OTG isn't working with my 1TB hdd, it works perfectly with my lg g3 so why isn't there enough power on my tab s? Is it a software thing?

Same here except mine doesn't work with anything other than a mouse. Tried several different ways, NTFS flashdrive, 32bit flashdrive, 1TB USB 3.0 external drive, 250GB 7,200 rpm HD... Anyone have this working with this tablet. There are a few post on the internet saying some have it working ok with all devices. And some just like me with only the mouse working.
I think someone can fix this, theres got to be a way to power them as a smaller battery from a phone can manage it.

Mine is working as advertised with usb sticks and various peripherals. External hds need their own power supply.

So u are using a custom rom with root. Some have reported that some roms would work. My note 4 is rooted and custom rom. Tab 3 Sprint LTE rooted on stock rom and Galaxy S 10.5 WiFi only not rooted and on stock rom. And none of this work. i am not sure if its the cable. Its an OEM cable from Samsung. Anyone else with info to which this working or not working for them. Please state if rooted or not and if using a custom. Plus if using OEM or not. Thanks folks, just at if its my systems or if its the cable.

What is working, flash drves, usb HD and usb self powered. I don't understand this. Unless Sprint removed OTG support and Verizon didn't. Or its my cable even if the Samsung store rep. at Best Buy said it would. I would the USB port is the same on all devices. Thanks for your replies.

You need OTG support enabled for compile for either stock or custom kernels. So if stock kernel doesn't work, it's probably not enabled for compile.
My SkyHigh kernels are enabled, and able to mount my two WD USB powered HHD's with no issues. One is formatted NTFS and require paragon app to mount, and the other FAT and able to use the native ROM File Explorer. Of course, all requiring root.
You might also want to check your hardware (cable and adapter), I have a couple "dodgy" ones that are in need of disposal

Still not for me on 3 Samsung devices. I am beginning to think it has to be my cable as I have watched several videos for those device and saw it working. I am using Samsung OEM cable and was told by the Best Buy Samsung rep. it would.
Thanks for your reply

Your are missing the point. It doesn't matter what "Joe Bloggs" said to you in the shop. It's really nothing to do with custom ROM (as you posted earlier in thread), but is compiled in the kernel.
If Samsung don't enable OTG whilst compiling the stock kernel, then the driver/module isn't inbuilt/compiled into kernel.
Root and flash SkyHigh kernel. Should work. It works fine for my T705.
As I also said, you need root and use paragon app to mount NTFS drives of any sort and possibly only with my kernel.

If this was just one device then I would avree. But I different devices, rooted with non rooted. I get this on stock not rooted, stock rooted and custom rom. Plus I had a friend try it on his S5 and got the same. 2 devices from sprint and 1 from Samsung. Now I could see Sprint maybe removing support but not Samsung. It's possible it was removed during update to KitKat. All 3 devices see the OTG drive but I get the message it might be corrupt, try reformat. Which I in both NTFS and 32bit across several drives.

You still aren't getting it. This is the last post to you.
If OTG isn't compiled in kernel (stock or custom), then it will NEVER work with ANY ROM with or without root. Seeing and mounting are different things.
Another user in this thread has confirmed OTG working on his device with my kernel. So there is the solution, or you may compile your own.
As I said, NTFS also need paragon app and root.
