Screen protector, overheating, charging and root problems.. - Xperia Z1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Good evening ladies and gentlemen.
I have received my Z1 day before yesterday, it is a great phone with amazing performance BUT
While taking some pictures, phone refused to continue, apparently it was too hot. I will post a screenshot.
Then when I connected to a original charger, xperia told me that the source is insufficient and my phone won't charge fast enough.. (i might have been playing some games, but still, original accessory). Is this ok?
I have heard that some Z1 phone have included screen protector mine did not have it. Other info I read is that there is one already installed, I can't see anything on the device though. And what about voiding warranty when removing it?
And is there a way to root phone (without unlocking bootloader) and voiding warranty?
Thank you guys for your answers and have a great day

There is a factory fitted screen protector, you can feel the edges of it at the very edge of the screen with your fingernails.
You will not void warrenty by removing it, I normally do remove it from xperia phones (Its difficult but can be done with your fingernails) but I have not done it yet on my Z1

Yes, just look in the two threads about rooting in the dev section.
Don't forget, rooting is different to unlocking

The protector pre-installed to the screen is not a scratch protector. It is a shatter protector, and scratches easily. It is also where the 'SONY' logo is printed, and removing it does invalidate your warranty.
It is recommended a screen protector is installed over the top of this shatter protector.

I have never had a problem with this.
Infact I removed this from my xperia T as soon as I got it. then several months later I dropped the phone flat onto its face onto a metal spike and screen shattered.
I got a free replacement under warrenty and no mention of the protector being removed.
I also, have never read in any of my contracts about warrenty being invalidated if its removed.
I also keep my phone in my pocket with loose change and car keys with no screen protector or case and have neve had a scratch or anything. the only time I had an issue was when I dropped it, and trust me, the way it was dropped, and what it landed on, it would not have mattered if it was srapped in bubble wra, it would still have shattered

Thats false, removing the shatter protector that comes pre-installed doesnt void your warranty

I got the information from the Email from Sony in the below post. Did they give false information? It'd be nice to know for sure, just in case I need to remove mine down the line!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=40603775

That's not an email you got from sony,
that's a post from someone on xda.
Please read your contract.

I downloaded warranty guide (for UK and Slovakia) from sony web site and I didn't found anything about shutter protector :-/

So, to sum it up..
1. Screen
- there is screen protector pre installed
- we do not know for sure if removing it will void my warranty
- it is recommended to put another screen protector over it
2. Root
- If I avoid unlocking bootloader it will not void my warranty.
- there is how to on XDA already
3. Overheating while taking pictures
- no info so far here
- am I really the only one with issue?
4. Charging
- again the only one? (happened only once, is it reason to contact telekom?)
Thank you guys for your answers

You might want to update your firmware to .534.. It fixed any heat issues for me and my phone runs pretty cool even when I took 20 shots in a row

overheating z1
ok youre not the only one
i just bought my z1 3 days ago and all was fine.
until today, i spent 30mins playing with chrome and taking pictures and the back of the z1 got extra hot.
The camera didnt work anymore, was showing the overheat warning as you posted in here.
I wonder if this an issue with the mobile or is it a firmware problem ?
Lemme know if u have any solutions
Thanks

My software version is 14.1.G.1.534 so it should be the latest one, that means updating did not solve anything for me.. :/
Is there anyone else with a solution? thank you

I havn't really done extreme things with my phone but it gets kinda hot, which i see as normal compered to other phones, is there any app or something like that, that might overheat your phone?

Had some problems with my Z1. Heated extremly, undervolted it and have know no problems and longer battery life.

Well i am not sure, but can a phone overclock by itself? Cuz' if so than that might be the problem, if you have root you can try to download some app in google play and try to "underclock" and see if that helps, if it helps it might be that your phone is overcklocking by itself

why should it overclock by itself? i never heard about this. i am not rooted no, since its a new mobile, i dont wish to root it yet.
I think sony should urgently look at this issue before we seriously burn the hell out of it

[Hardware] Anybody knows how to remove ZR screen ?

I have cracked my screen and the touchscreen only works from the half down. I don't want to risk warranty rejection and live 3 weeks without my phone so I've ordered the replacement part (LCD+digitizer).
I'm an experienced smartphone repairer (mostly on iPhones but some Androids too) but I'm a bit worried that I'll break my ZR. From my understanding it needs to be opened from the front side, but I would like to be sure of what I do.
Has anybody seen a disassembly guide/video/pictures ? It would help a lot!
(If not, I will document my repair here for future reference...)
Try googling it

There's some pictures of how Sony do it, it looks complicated!!

I have the same problem, except no part of the screen is working. I was just wondering if you tried to change the screen, and if you did, is everything working?

Z1 Power Button issue

A couple of weeks ago I noticed that my power button felt different on my Z1. At first I thought it was my imagination, but more and more I was sure something wasnt right.
Last week on the way to work, my colleague who also has a Z1 used my phone to look at something and his first comment was "Whats up with your power button??"
It has no definite feeling when pressing it, its almost impossible to tell if you have pressed it or not, it looks and feels recessed too.
When trying his phone it was exactly as I remembered it to be, when you push it you can feel as response (small click or resistance), on mine there is nothing!
So I contacted Sony Xperia, who were suprised by the described issue. Long story short I have to return the phone to them for a 5 - 7 day turnaround repair.
Anyone else had the same issue? Or even sent their phone back to Sony in the UK? I am a little concerned that once it is prised open to be repaired it will never be the same again! All in all, for the £550 I paid for a premium handset, it is the first one that I have had any hardware issues with.

Mine do not come back yet, I sent it back via warranty 2 weeks ago. I will let you know. Anyway Sony Service have to provide best service for your phone and it should be still under warranty even when the phone come back to you but in which condition this is a mystery for all of us.

I think is needed a experience because you have to take apart all phone and I will suggest to let do this job to Sony. And of curse it will have to be seal again to make the water resistance working again. If you do all of this the warranty will be gone.
An update on mine, it got worse and now has been sent back for warranty repair at Sony, well they use a company called SBE Ltd in the UK
I'm not very impressed to be honest, this is the first phone I've had to return to the manufacturer for repair, this was meant to be a quality product. So there is at least 3 people with the same problem, maybe more who haven't noticed. Potentially there is an issue with the design or button component.
In so cheese off as I have to use a crappy Nokia Lumia 800 Windows phone for the period it is away!
I have been looking at a Nexus 5 or Note 3 as a replacement, selling mine on eventual return from repair..
Sent from my Nexus 7 using XDA Premium HD app
I'm having issues with my volume down rocker. It is much harder to press then volume up it also doesn't have the clicking sound volume up gives when you press it. Of course I'm within my return window so I'm waiting for my replacement phone to get here so I can ship the one I currently have back

Ok, but if the button still working I think is not worth to open it and risk much more, BTW is not the button problem but the hardware component under the button.
Z1 button issue
I'm from India and have the same problem with the button. I bought Z1 around October last year. The button started getting worse gradually from the beginning of January, and now there's absolutely no feedback on pressing. It almost feels as if there's a spring under the button.
If anyone has given the phone for repairs to Sony for this issue, please reply. I'm also worried about the waterproofing and other possible damage to the device, specially given the fact that it's got a non-removable back so opening up the device might be a mess.
I've seen a video on YouTube about the z
As far as the Z is concerned there are about 4 screws and the rest is glued. Front- and backside.
Now, you can guess if the phone is still waterproof after putting it back together.
Even with skilled techs and the appropriate equipment I highly doubt it.
Here is the link
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HPN930fohyo&feature=youtu.be
It's a German video but I think the pictures speak for themselves.
Best thing you could do is to ask the repair center for a guarantee on wich you can depend on (written of course)

It can be forever if you use the device properly and you you keep in mind to don't use the flaps a lot and keep them clean. Flaps like that can do great job for 2 years without problem but time and natural degradation is on they way, so if you will replace the flaps after this time is fine to me. But if you keep leaving the phone in you car on dashdoard under the sun all the time clearly this can compromise the assembly and the sealing of the phone. So practically depend of how you use your phone.

Yes , opening the phone for a button will be a mess and maybe is not covered by warranty so if the button working well I will not be worry about it. The day when it will not work then you will get the new button.

I started this thread, it is definitely a problem and you should get it repaired. Mine was sent back and now has been repaired, not very impressive for a "premium" handset!
It was only away for just over a week.

Yeah, I'm thinking of giving it in next week. Very disappointing from a flagship phone. Did yours show any visible sign of damage after repairs? Even scratches etc.?

[Q] Unable to swipe down the statusbar

I've been having problems with the sensitivity of the top 2mm of my phone's screen. I don't remember when it started but I think it was around a couple of months ago.
Before, it was only difficult for me to swipe the notification bar down, but now, I can no longer swipe it down unless I rotate the screen.
I don't remember how or exactly when it started, but I remember that I was using ARHD 70.0, then I updated to 71.1 in attempt to fix it, but it only worked for a while but it came back again. I also tried other roms such as MaximusHD and Eragon but still the same. I also tried rebooting to safe mode but still the same. I also used both stock and elemental sense kernels.
I updated my firmware back then to 6.06 and now to 6.07 but still nothing. I haven't tried downgrading yet though.
I tried using the line draw test and the result is found below.
Does anyone know how to fix this? I already searched xda and google but i found no solution to my problem.
It could be a hardware related issue. If it's still under warranty revert it to stock and re-lock the bootloader and just send it back.

Has your device been dropped or been water damaged? The digitizer connection from the mb could have became a bit loose.
*Edit*
I have read on a forum for the HTC One X which seems to have a similar issue to yours where a part of the screen is unresponsive. Someone suggested to clean the connector.

I did some more research about it and people are saying it is a digitizer issue. So replacing the digitizer should fix it, but you will need to buy the lcd and digitizer together as its nearly impossible to replace them separate from eachother.

It's definitely a hardware issue. I have been dealing with the same issue for about 6 months now. When I try to swipe down to bring up the notification bar I get absolutely no feedback . If I give it a smack with my palm near the top corners I can often times get it to start working again. However, it's usually short lived.

I see. Thank you very much for the help. I think I'll just send this to the service center when I get the chance. I will probably ask them to fix the red tinted camera as well. I just hope it won't be too expensive.
You have a dead spot. Sorry kid. If updating the OS still gives you the funk, you need a new screen.

Battery health very poor?

Hello !
I think my battery is close to giving his last amps, my Z can't manage to stay powered on without a charger for more then 5 minutes, If I'm lucky and don't put too much of a load on the battery it stays on a little longer and I can actually listen to music on the train. But whenever I open snapchat or the camera for example, my phone crashes immediately and I can't turn my phone on without using a charger, it just keeps looping right after recovery. The weird thing is that in recovery he can stay on until the battery is actually depleted, so I also already tried to completely drain the battery and then charge him to 100% without disconnecting, but same thing.
I thought the problem was lollipop related but sadly enough it's not, going back to kitkat and reflashing my kernel(which is just flashing boot.img in fastboot, right?) didn't work.
Any ideas? Thanks in advance!
Try to reflash stock firmware, and post results.

Thanks for replying, reflashed to 10.5.1.A.0.292 but no luck there either, phone just requires a charger to function properly.
I guess it's hardware related

Yes it is. If you have the problem on any ROM, relock your bootloader if it's unlocked, flash a stock unrooted ROM and send your phone to repair (if you still have the warranty, it must be repaired for free). Or you can order a battery from aliexpress and change it yourself (personally I don't recommend this).

Sorry for the late reply, but just heard from repair service they can't repair it because of a shatter in the back glass, pretty lame because I've had that for a year now and my phone worked fine until now.
Should I look out for dodgy sellers on AliExpress? because the batteries are all pretty cheap, I'll probably get a new back glass as well since it's so cheap.
I've got a fair amount of knowledge when it comes to electronics so switching a battery won't be that much of a problem I think? Or was that not the reason why you didn't recommend it?

Yeah that's why I didn't recommend it. It is not that easy to change the battery yourself. Don't forget to buy the glue necessary to put the glass cover back (I think some sellers include this glue with the back cover if you buy a new one). And regarding the dodgy thing, yeah look out from who you buy before doing it.

[Q] replace broken screen

Hi, I broke my screen on P7 and I want to replace it by myself. Do you have any experiences with this process?
Thanks for advises
Can someone just give me a good link for a complete screen, lcd, touch, and glass(free shiping is desirable). Thanks in advance.
Dude.... its a PITA.
The back is "stuck in place"with glue that you need to remove, and then replace. The whole unit then needs to be taken apart. I tried it once, and being used to screen replacements myself, was surprised to fail miserably.
Its not that expensive from a Huawei center, and if its under warrenty, the labour is even free!

I have to agree with Juggles.
There's no point doing it yourself, unless you are experienced mobile phone technician. If your phone was bought new then just send it for repair as it is under warranty.
Cheers

And I have to disagree... I just successfully replaced my broken screen few days ago. It's not that hard.
Is it possible to change the front glass without the digitizer?
After all thats just a couple of bucks compared to the "real-thing", but I gess its not the best option as there isn't a "How to change only frontglass out there"...
