[Q] 4g icon? - Moto X Q&A

I got download rates over 6 Mbits but the icon did not change for any 4g type, it remained as H+, is that right?

Which carrier?

H+ means HSPA. So you are not getting LTE, if that's what you are asking.

Yeah 6 mbps is a decent speed for HSPA.

AT&T Vivid showing 4G even when off?

Basically my question is why my Vivid shows 4G in the status bar always? Even if I turn off data, it still shows the 4G icon. I was in a spot yesterday where I definitely had no data and I still had a 4G icon. It never changes from 4G. Ever. There is no way I can always been in an area with 4G coverage.
Anybody else notice this?
you can thank AT&T for meddling with the framework. they like to trick everyone into thinking you have 4G coverage everywhere, even when you dont actually have it.

Damn. That's exactly what I thought but was hoping that wasn't the case. Now, if I'm in an LTE area, will it show it or still just 4G?

It will show "4G LTE"
with the lte written small, just below the G
See, AT&T wants to promote LTE.... but not at the expense of admitting that everything else, is not 4G
No worries, this is something I know ROMs will address.
And no wonder I haven't seen the LTE yet because I'm not in an LTE market. Awesome.
If we do custom icons (such as animated v8) in the UOT kitchen, what icons would be used for 4g and lte?
There are only 10 kinds of people. Those who understand binary math, and those who don't.
Never mind. I see they are included in that pack. Never noticed them before.

Here's what I wrote in the Holicakes thread.

4G under the AT&T ROM is used to represent UMTS (3G), HSD/UPA (H) and HSPA+ (H). Thus, you previously could never actually see it bouncing between UMTS and HSPA, which the phone frequently does.
LTE will show up as LTE in the little indicator, if it's available.

AFAIK, there is no unique icon for HSPA+; you've just got to trust in the speed. Also AFAIK, any ROM that displays H+ is true, as I think that HSPA+ is merely a seamless extension of HSD/UPA.
Flashing an international ROM shows just how crap of a job AT&T's "4G" indicator does.

This is exactly what I saw when running Rum Raider. The indicator went from 3G to H+ quite frequently.

Wait, H+ or H? I'm getting H+ speeds, but my phone still shows H. H is all I've seen on any international ROM I've used, both on the Inspire and this.

I thought H+ on Rum Raider but I may be wrong. May have just been H.

Force LTE?

So I'm in LA inside where I'm at i get three bars of LTE and full bars of 3G since the 3G is stronger it keeps me in 3G for the most part unless i do a profile update then it puts me at 4G for 5 minutes before kicking me back down. So the question is, is there a way to force LTE?

The bars do not represent EVDO (3G) or LTE (4G), they represent 1X Voice on the HTC One. If you want to know the actual signal strength of your 3G and 4G go to settings/About Phone/Network.
My guess is that the LTE is borderline in the building and therefore it goes back and forth. Where I work I have strong LTE and EVDO but when I'm in the building it will switch to 3G once I start using data like Youtube or something. Once I stop and set the phone down it will reconnect to LTE. If I go towards the outer part of the building I will get a better LTE connection, or if I go outside it is really good. This is due to the poor penetration of the 1900mhz LTE.
The phone will connect to the higher priority signal, first 4G and then 3G.
As said above, it seems like your LTE connection is very weak, or else the phone would stick to that.
Ok so i did *#*#4636#*#* and changed it from CDMA + LTE to LTE, CDMA and it hasn't dropped from 4G

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't that disable your ability to receive phone calls/texts?

If you set it to "LTE only" then yes but if you set it to "LTE,CDMA" it will only connect to LTE and 1XRTT and bypasses EVDO. So you phone should stay on 4G a lot more since EVDO is disabled but if LTE drops you will drop to 1X

Correct. Hence CDMA/LTE vs CDMA/EvDO/LTE. You can also do LTE only if you're feeling bold.

Settings->about phone -> status -> mobile network type. Anything other than LTE is not LTE. There are different types of UMTS, I am currently connected to UMTS: 3 which is 3G/3.5G HSDPA service.

The data icon in the status bar will show 4G or 4G LTE when you have service

I'm reading stuff saying that the gsm Version of the phones have vzw cdma and lte bands. Is this true?

i cant say for sure about that.
but i am fairly certain the verizon version comes with HSPA+ and LTE bands for T-Mobile and AT&T. if this is true, then i'm inclined to think YES as the answer to your question...but again, cannot say for certain

How do you fix the T-Mobile moto x to show lte vs hspa instead of 4g?

For me it shows LTE next to the 4G icon when it is available and just the 4G icon when I am on HSPA.

When I'm on LTE, it shows 4G LTE with LTE written smaller and sideways next to the 4G. On HSPA, it just shows 4G with no LTE next to it.
The Nexus 5 shows LTE and H only, never seen 4G displayed. It looks like tmo inserted their own icons. My guess is that you are not in a LTE area.
