So the other day my Xperia Z1 updated to 14.1.G.1.531. The problem is, this update has removed the "GSM Only" option from Mobile Network Settings. The signal is so crap around my area and at home, that without this option turned on, my phone will regularly go into "No Service" mode.
After some googling I can still turn on "GSM Only" by using this code in the dialler: *#*#4636#*#* but it doesn't remember the setting for long, and just reverts back to struggling to connect to 3G and putting my phone into "No Service" all the time.
The amount of calls I've missed and texts I have to keep "Retry" sending since this update removed "GSM Only" is a nightmare!
Is there any way to roll-back to before the update?
(The phone isn't rooted because it sounds like the Root stops the camera working properly at the moment?)
I was in a similar position to yourself, the 3G signal at my house is crap and on previous handsets, the 2G Only option worked wonders for my battery and stopped a lot of dropped calls/missed texts.
The EE 518 firmware didn't have the GSM Only option, but I flashed the Unbranded UK software from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2469191
That's got GSM Only and root isn't needed to flash it either.

First off, root does NOT break the camera. Unlocking the bootloader does. These are two independent and separate things.
That said, I'm on the unbranded Indian 534 version and I have that option. You can try flashing a different ftf if you want. I think flashing the ftf is also the only way to roll back to and older firmware.
I'd recommend finding a more up to date (534) unbranded ftf for your region and flash that. My guess is the option will be there (your carrier may have removed it?). Or wait for your next update and hope it gets fixed.

Ah that sounds great, so is it the .518 Generic UK i need to get it back, or the .534 Generic UK has GSM Only too?
I think i'm on unbranded anyway, it was from Carphone Warehouse, doesnt seem to have any branding on it!

Yeah, CPW handsets should be unbranded. It's surprising you haven't got the 534 update yet though?
Anyways, head to the post I linked and download this one: C6903 14.1.G.1.534 Generic UK 1276-0875_R9A
Have you ever flashed an FTF before? There are instructions in ians post and it is mega easy.

Just looked in my "About Phone" before i was about to flash it, and the build says I'm on 14.1.G.1.534 already now, I dont remember ever saying yes to an update, odd.
Still have no "GSM Only" option though, which is what I need :/
If you're on that firmware download and have the option though, i'll go ahead and flash it on mine!
Have ended up using this app as a workaround if anyone else is having the problem. It just gives you a shortcut to a hidden menu where you can select "GSM Only".

Good morning all.
As per title - I've tried changing every setting I can find, but that "R" is a stubborn SOB that will not go away.
IIRC it first appeared after my first custom ROM flash about 4 weeks ago, but is still there after reflashing any stock firmware (both 2.2 and 2.2.1, flashed via Odin and OTA updates. Kies just locks my pc up, and will be eliminated when I get home. What a POS that is..)
I have deactivated data network mode by choice because of my carrier's hugely generous 100Mb per month limit, but it makes no difference when it's activated.
Makes no difference whether I select network manually or automatically either - it finds and locks on quickly, but the status is always roaming. In settings>about phone>status I have:
mobile network state - disconnected
mobile network type - EDGE.
IEMI etc is all good.
The phone is locked to my carrier, so I can't "roam" as such here in Norway, but I want to find a way to disable/have some control over it before I go to France next week, otherwise my bill could be enormous.
Zero help from my carrier's customer service ("we don't know, call Samsung"), so I thought I'd ask the real experts here first.
Carrier is Tele2 in Norway - noen andre som har hatt slike problemer/anyone else with similar probs?
As always, many thanks for any help.

6 to date. Current one is Nordic stock. No difference.
Hi all
I've had a look around the forum and all posts on this subject relate to US versions of this problem.
Anyway, I don't live in a 4G area, but yesterday I happened to be in central London. But I had no 4G. I went into the settings and there was no 4G option, only GSM and WCDMA. I downloaded an app and forced it into 4G and it worked, although I only ever got 1 bar, but the data worked.
I called Three, they said I should send it back to HTC for repair! I said thanks but no thanks.
I bought my phone SIM free in the UK from Expansys, I checked the bootloader screen, it's a W7_UL (I believe the L means it's LTE enabled) and I've rooted it (no custom ROMS, just root). I suspect I don't have a 4G SIM, but I don't know how to find out. Only after researching this did I discover - to my horror and bafflement - that there is a version of the One without 4G. I was briefly worried I had managed to spend £400 on a lemon, but it seems I am able to use 4G if I force it.
Any ideas?
I just noticed something in odd in my software versions. I'm still on Android 4.3...
Isn't the HTC One now on 4.4? Sense version is 5.5, Software number 3.62.401.1 and HTC SDK API level 5.65
I ran an OTE update, it says no new updates.
Three are gradually upgrading everyone's account to 4G, so there's a slim chance you've not been moved over yet, but as for the OTA update I believe HTC pulled it temporarily but I think it should be available again so keep trying (or manually install it if you're S-OFF)

Thanks for the quick reply. I asked Three and they said my account had been 4G enabled (although I never received any system messages about it)
I think I might install a custom ROM

Are you S-OFF? If so, and the ROM is otherwise stock, I'd flash the 4.4.2 OTA manually and see what happens. If it's still not working after that then might be worth giving a custom ROM a go...from my experience of Three's 4G to date it's quite good, but obviously still rolling out

Try "dialing" *#*#4636#*#* -> Phone information -> and set to GSM/WCDMA/LTE auto (or you can also force "LTE only" to test)

Yep, I tried that and it did go to 4G. As soon as I reboot the phone, it reverts back to WCDMA/GSM.
For your info OP......I have an unlocked One (now 4.2.2 but 4.3 at the time) from carphone warehouse on a Three UK plan, I don't live in a 4g area but I recently visited Cambridge and noticed "4g " instead of the usual H or 3g on the notification bar , I did a speed test and it was 14Mb+ so I guess my account and phone are both 4G ready , I had done nothing to try to set this up or force it, it just happened.

Is there a way of forcing it to update?
i found it on ebay for a very good price
http://www.ebay.com/itm/UNLOCKED-SO...008?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item339ce86cd8
is it any different then the international version software and hardware wise?
is it possible to flash international or custom roms on it?
what do ppl think is this version worth buying?
i'm using z3c docomo. since december, docomo z3cs were sold on taobao, and a lot of ppl in china are using it.
yes, you can flash international version roms using flash tools.
afaik, there is no official bootloader unlock of docomo z3cs,but giefroot with locked bootloader is possible.
but, since the nfc chip is different between docomo and international versions, using a non-docomo rom will break nfc, and you must adb block com.android.nfc or you will get battery drain.
block nfc will lose features like android beam, cause play memories mobile app to fc(i guess so),and turn on ultra stamina mode will be a bootloop.
also, i feel the touch is a bit too sensitive ,eg. in system setting, the list sometimes scroll a bit when you lifting up your finger.
someone has reported that touchscreen is normal when using a docomo rom, but i doubt it, because there are some reports in this forum about touch issues of international versions.
finally, the docomo logo on back panel is not as nice looking as sony's, but you can change the back panel by yourself.

i am using Z3c docomo version. i flashed my z3c using international version rom. after flashed it, NFC cannot be turn off. @defia there is 'R' symbol on status bar which means roaming on my network. even it was roaming, i don't get any extra charge. but it is litle bit annoying to see that symbol show up in status bar instead of 'H','H+','LTE',etc..
is it band related? because when i check it, it has JAPAN band, there is no options for another bands.

Do you know if this version of the phone will work on Docomo's network in Japan? I'm looking to use it with an MVNO that uses Docomo's network while I'm in Japan.

Hello!
Did you managed to get rid of the roaming (R) icon above the signal bars?
I know there is also the NFC problem, but that one doesn't bother me, I don't use the NFC functionality so I disabled it and there are no problems.
Roaming problem on the other hand, whenever I disable the Wi-Fi or I go out of the Wi-Fi coverage area, I keep seeing the notification:
"Data Roaming"
"No connection. Data roamning is off."
I have tried all suggested solutions from different sources and none of them worked:
1. Installed various firmwares (D5803, D5833, Global, Central Europe, USA, etc) - I live in Romania, Europe and I use "orange" oprator. (no luck)
Extra info: I also tried the branded firmware from Orange Romania but didn't work, still roaming...
URL: http://forum.xda-developers.com/z3-compact/general/list-stock-firmwares-d5803-d5833-t2906706
2. Rooted (with 4.4.4 and also with 5.0.2). (no luck)
Extra info: I just rooted the firmwares from D5803, didn't try the original firmware SO-02G.
URL: http://forum.xda-developers.com/z3-compact/general/how-to-root-backup-drm-keys-t3013343
3. Updated radio bands (Before I was seeing only JAPAN band, now after update I see them all EURO Band, JAPAN Band, US Band, etc) but unfortunately... (no luck)
Extra info: *#*#4636#*#* -> See screenshot
URL: http://forum.xda-developers.com/cro...ad-progress-please-leave-im-updating-t2871269
I ran out of options, if anybody can suggest other things I could try to get rid of the Roaming I would be really grateful
Thank you!
I have the same problem, my z3 compact is from Japan, Docomo SO-02G, I cannot seem to remove the annoying Data Roaming notification. I also checked the GSM/UMTS Setting, only Japan Setting was available. Anyone with a fix for this?

Are u now using Z3c docomo version ? If yes, it means that your current carrier's network is not registered in the phone (or something like that). All you have to do is root, install xposed then run the module name "National roaming" then you can get rid of the Roaming icon, actually it's not affect to the phone's battery or anything, just the display icon problem.

I'm kinda a new user and I'm still trying to learn my way around rooting and all that stuff. My phone is not rooted yet, so I guess I'm still so far away from getting to the solution. But it's comforting to hear that there is a solution, although not yet tested but I am optimistic about it.
BTW, you said you are already rooted, I would love it if you would update this thread after you try to suggested fix.
I'm still learning how to do the rooting, and I'm not the fast learner type.. hehe..
by the way is your phone a NTT Docomo SO-02G also?

Yes, my phone is also NTT Docomo SO-02G and I hate it already! Just because of the two problems (NFC + Roaming) but at least I am grateful that due to this problems I was forced to learn so many things and managed to install various firmwares, root, upgrade basebands...
Believe me, I was a an iOS (iPhone 4, 4S, 5) user for the past 3 years so this means a lot to me (managing to do stuff on Android) )
I will give it a try tonight and then I will let you know if it works
The problem is I have installed and rooted Lolipop and unfortunately there is no stable version of xPosed for Lolipop, only an alpha version which requires some extra package to be installed and I didn't managed yet, but I will downgrade to 4.4.4 and then install the stable version of xPosed and try the "National roaming" module.
Keep in touch.
Alas!
WOW! This is such a blessing, I was actually hoping for someone else using SO-02G because I'm in tons of dilemma, whether to use this or that or what to do or not, because majority of the english help and guides as we know are from the international version. You are heaven sent, I would surely stay connected, given that I am in the process of learning to do all those stuffs in my SO-02G..
Found this All-In-1 guide here,. May I ask, Did you use this guide in all the processes you did?

Hi everyone,
This is a great site with a mass of info! I've used it before to flash my HTC Sensation a few years ago.
Since then, I've had a HTC One X and now a HTC One M7. Ok, the M7 is 'New' (from China). It's in excellent condition and it actually does appear to be new. So I don't really know what's going on there... But anyway, I'm having issues.
The phone can't seem to keep a cellular signal, but Wifi is absolutely fine.
So a bit about the history of the phone; When I got it, it was on Android 4.4.2 IIRC with super CID already done. I unlocked the bootloader and flashed LineageOS onto it - the latest one. The battery life was appalling and it wouldn't charge. The phone signal kept dropping.
I've reflashed it today with an RUU called "RUU_M7_UL_L50_SENSE60_MR_BrightstarUS_WWE_7.17.1540.51.exe" and battery life appears to have improved somewhat.
However, the cellular signal keep dropping. Now, I've contacted Virgin UK and explained the situation and they have said the Sim is faulty and it's old apparently and not 4g. They've since sent me a new 4g sim. I've put it in and activated it yesterday.
I still don't understand why my signal keep disappearing.
I've checked and verified the APN details - They seem correct - "Virgin Media Mobile Internet".
The problem appears to be something to do with "Network Mode" or "Network Operator". Sometimes I've noticed that if I go back into the settings and change the selection, sometimes it seems to see the connection again!
Right now, I've selected "2G/3G/4G auto" network mode with "Virgin 2G/3G" as the operator, but I think that soon, it will drop again!
Does any of this sound familiar to anyone here? Thanks, Antony...
Ok, I've just lost signal now, around 2hrs later... My phone has just been left in my house... I've been checking on it every so often.
If I go to "Network Operators" and choose Virgin, it magically works again!
I have full signal again, calls work and internet works. What the?!?!
It's still doing it.
Apparently, it's because I've got a 3G plan but using a 4G sim. Although, that is strange because even if I choose 2G/3G, it still drops.
Mehhhhh.

Hey, thanks for your reply!
Since that last post, I've flashed a UK ROM and it was still the same, in a way worse because it dumbed down some options in network settings. I've since flashed it back to the ROM mentioned above. I've now noticed that the problem is something to do with 3G/4G. If I change the network provider to 2G ONLY, the phone works perfectly with my Virgin SIM.
I desperately want to fix this. My new provider which I've switched to doesn't offer 2G, so I'll effectively be screwed.
Here is the data which you asked me to get!

You flashed US unlocked RUU, but that should work fine. You need x.xx.401.xx for WWE, but, as I said, US unlocked should work fine. I had a similar issue with an AOSP ROM, and I resolved it by manually entering my APN settings. Even though all APN settings looked fine, there were some small differences that caused issues. Not a great help, but you could try it, no harm. If thadoesn't work, it's most likely a hardware issue

Hmmm, ok, thanks. I've already messed about with APN details lots of times.

Good day.
As i no longer have the '2g only' option in preferred networks in my phone, i have been searching for an root way to add that to my phone.
I stumbled upon an forum that has an solution on MIUI devices, that consists in changing a value in a database file 'settings.db' with an SQL editor. (see attached image)
It seems that Sony must have the file in another directory, as the db file was supposed to be in '/data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases', but in my phone i couldn't find the file.
Could anyone direct me to that file?
Thank you.
At least I have an option "GSM only" in preferred network settings. I'd think it means "2G".

You don't need to do any of that. Open you phone and type *#*#7378423#*#*
Then go into Service settings and choose GSM_UMTS, or GSM_ONLY.
You may have better results with the first option, but if you fail to get any signal, try the second.
Good day and thank you for your reply.
I already used that way with the service menu, but every time i want to switch between 2g and 4g, i have to do that procedure, that is not very pratical.
That is why i am searching a way to change the settings in my phone to accomplish that more easily.
The only 2 options in my phone is '2g/3g' and '4g/3g/2g'.

I don't understand the issue with using 4g, why keep switching?

Good day.
For 3 main reasons.:
1 - Most of the time 4g uses 4x more battery power than 2g.
2 - In my country house, 4g is unstable, and keeps switching between 4g and 3g.
3 - Throughout the day, while at work, i use my phone mostly to receive messages in Whatsapp and Facebook messenger, so i don't need that much throughput.
Thank you.

Most providers these days will sell you a signal booster. Connects to your home broadband but puts out a 3g/4g signal for your phone to lock onto.
I use Vodafone, they have Suresignal
I think trying to fight your phone connecting to a 4G mast is a loosing battle.
Good day.
I remembered, if i flash with flashtool, the 'modem' or other part, from another country's FTF file, would it bring back the '2g only' option?
Thank you.

Fortunately, the whole different modems for different regions thing disappeared a few years ago, what a nightmare.
But having said that all firmwares are equal, I do remember being told about 2g being enabled as a choice in a Russian build. I was being corrected for saying that they are all the same. But I can’t find the post or help you with any more than a maybe….
As I have said earlier, at least I have an option for GSM only. I'm on the latest Customized NOBA (Nordic/Baltic) 47.2.A.4.45. I don't know if flashing some file from the fw would bring the option to a firmware that is lacking it though...
Oh cr*p, there goes my last hope Thank you anyway.
Guess i'll have to try and flash ROM's from all the country until i find one with the option, although i already tried the Russian build and no option.
Just the last stretch for this phone until the Galaxy S10 arrives.

Try Customized NOBA. If you don't get the option with that, it's not about fw but your service provider. If you are flashing the whole ROM that is.

Yes, thank you. This weekend i'll try that. What is strange that i had '2G only' option in Oreo, but not Pie. And other users that even replied to my post say that they have the option in their phone.
