[Q] Change Carrier? - Moto X Q&A

I have a Sprint Moto X (XT1056). Once my contract is up, can I switch to T-Mobile if I first have Sprint carrier unlock the phone? From my research the hardware / radio bands are the same, so it looks like it should be possible. I'm a bit of a noob with GSM carriers (Verizon/Sprint customer as long as I've had a mobile phone).

Presuming the phone has a GSM radio (which I believe it does), you should in theory be able to switch once it is unlocked. You may be able to use a site to unlock the phone as well, you would have to see if they are able to. You will also need to load the T-Mobile APNs I believe once you switch.

Nope. It's the same on the Droid 3.
That's complete BS. I was ready to buy the D2G outright (not a Verizon customer), but didn't because of this prime example of Verizon continued lock down of their devices.

Much like AT&T and T-Mobile locking their devices as well? Sure you can unlock the phones but you have to be a customer for X amount of months, and that's the same with Verizon. Much like how AT&T for a while didn't like anyone side loading applications on their Android devices? Much like AT&T not allowing their iPhones to be unlocked?
Sorry man before you make any one carrier/manufacturer look like the "bad guy" you should make sure others are not doing it.

Yah but on a att or tmobile phone you can simply buy the code and voila you are good to go. You unlock a vzw phone and you still cant use it since they put custom software that specifically blocks u from using it in the U.S. so when you unlock it its still not really unlocked. Its a douche move.
Reread what I said, and think harder about what I said. Regardless if you can pay or not. It's still locked from the moment you purchased it. You have to wait Months to get an unlock code or pay someone to unlock it for you. Just because Verizon locks you out from using it from other carriers there are way to adjust it. You could always purchase a milestone which is the same thing right?

Actually, most unlocked AT&T and T-Mobile smartphones won't work on 3G on the other's network. Different bands. Same sort of attempt at locking the phone from being used with other domestic carriers just like Verizon. When the companies pay for an exclusive within the country, they want to do their best to protect their investment and keep it exclusive.
This also applies for GSM carriers outside of the US? I live in Barbados and we use 1800 I believe, was looking at picking up a D3 unlocked once the bootloader lock had been circumvented.
Actually I was referring to the carrier lock that needed to be removed for US bands.

according to the wikipedia entry it does not support 1800Mhz bands =\ If I'm not mistaken, that's the same as Tmobile in America for UMTS 3G bands

DROID 3 - Will my phone work using other GSM SIM such as AT&T or T-Mobile in the United States?
Will the Droid 3 work using other GSM SIM such as AT&T or T-Mobile in the United States?
Your phone is designed to be utilized with the pre-installed SIM card. You will need to enable international roaming AND activate your pre-installed SIM card in your phone when traveling outside of the U.S.
The GSM and UMTS bands that are supported in Droid3 Global will not work in the United States. The GSM and UMTS bands are only able to be utilized outside the U.S. A GSM SIM card such as AT&T or T-Mobile will not operate in the U.S.
Contact Verizon Wireless for more information dial *611 from your cell phone or call Verizon Wireless @ 800-922-0204.
Note: GSM and UMTS-based global services work only with SIM card supplied by Verizon Wireless® or by another non U.S GSM or UMTS service provider. When you set your phone to use a GSM 900/1800 or UMTS 2100 network, you may be prompted to enter a subsidy code. To get this code, contact Verizon Wireless.

If I buy the phone from the Motorola store, will it be unlocked for use with International SIMs?
Regardless of where you buy your phone it will be locked to Verizon. Verizon will provide an unlock code to customers based on certain prerequisites. This code will allow you to use another carrier's sim cards while outside of the US, but you can not use any US based GSM providers.

If it has the Droid 3 name (which means it's the Verizon version of the phone), the SIM slot will be locked regardless of where you buy it. Some versions released in other countries (like the XT860 4G in Canada) may or may not be SIM locked. That remains to be seen.
But all those restrictions are software based, yeah?
According to GSM Arena, the Droid 3's hardware supports HSDPA on 3 of the four 3G frequencies, including the two that I think AT&T uses (850/1900), and one that I think T-Mobile uses (2100), and it supports 2G GSM on all four frequencies.
If the bootloader ever gets unlocked and we get custom roms, will that potentially remove the carrier restrictions for GSM networks??

Potentially.
The only other way is to have the required files from Motorola to unlock the bands, which aren't publicly available. Team Black Hat evidently has what's needed to do that for the Droid 2 Global and the Droid Pro, but you have to send your phone into them along with $100 to get it done. Maybe there will be an option like that in the future for the Droid 3.

Yes, a non-Verizon rom can solve the problem. A lot of Chinese user bought Droid 3 from ebay and flash it to China-Telecom rom (major carrier in China) and get all bands unlocked, no GSM unlock code needed in that case.

But what about unlocking the US based GSM carriers?
And what about the aosp roms?
Is the restriction in the rom, or in the radio file?
There's a CyanogenMod 7 alpha version being developed, and people are reporting that something in its build.prop gives them better gsm reception overseas. Would it also allow a US Droid 3 user to use a US GSM carrier, such as AT&T?

since sprint has a SIM slot, does this mean possible to unlock for ATT / T-mobile?

Nope
Sprint=CDMA
ATT/T-Mobile=GSM
Actually... Sprint HTC One = CDMA/LTE and GSM...
So yes it's technically possible, but there's been a few hiccups with getting it accomplished. The method to SIM Unlock the device that regular GSM providers use (pop in a third party SIM and it prompts you for an unlock code) doesn't work with the Sprint HTC One so it requires a bit more creativity to get it unlocked. Unless something's changed recently there hasn't been a whole lot of success with using it on domestic GSM networks either. Even if you could do it, it's of limited utility since it only supports one 3G band out of the various 3G and 4G bands used by AT&T and T-Mobile in the US. Therefore, you may experience reduced data performance with the device in certain places.

[Q] Buying a Verizon Moto X.

Hello everyone,
First time signing up to XDA (I love this site). I've been waiting to buy a new phone for a while now. And I did have my eyes set on a Nexus 5. But I'm ultimately deciding to get a Moto X. Cause it would be the best for me at the moment due to pricing.
I plan on buying it on the extended Cyber Monday sale day(s) through MotoMaker, fully customized and so forth. And I was wondering if I buy the Verizon version of the Moto X. Will it be GSM Unlocked worldwide? I've seen threads and I'm not to clear on it. Do take note I do not live in the US but in the Caribbean. My carrier bands support GSM 850 and 1900 MHz frequency & HSPA+ 850MHz for mobile data. Just wanting to know if I can pop in my GSM sim and everything will work fine and dandy?
Or will I have to buy a carrier locked Moto X from either AT&T or T-Mobile from MotoMaker and buy an unlock code from an unlocking website?
(If this is my only option, do you suggest any unlocking website that would be best?)
Thank you for taking the time to read and help.
Have a nice day.

I don't know if the Verizon version will do GSM, I'd assume not. You also cannot unlock a Verizon Moto x unless it is the dev edition.
The T-Mobile one is the one that you can unlock for free on the motorola website, so if that is what you want, I'd suggest that.

Verizon uses the CDMA network.
via my slapped KIT KAT moto X
All Verizon 4G LTE phones are Sim unlocked. That includes the VZW Moto X. While you can put a non-Verizon GSM sim in there, the phone will tell you the sim is unsupported, and you'll need to enter your carrier's APN settings manually in order to get data, sms, and mms.
Per Moto's web site, the Verizon version supports...
GSM/EDGE: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz
3G UMTS/HSPA: 850/900/1900/2100 MHz with HSPA+ up to 42 Mbps (B5/B8/B2/B1)
LTE: 750Mhz (B13)... 700 Mhz Band 4 is supposed to be supported too.
IF your carrier is GSM and supports those bands, the VZW Moto X will work after you put the APN settings in manually.
That being said... since the Moto Maker Verizon Moto X has a locked boot loader, and supports CDMA bands that your GSM carrier likely wont use, I have to question why you would want the Verizon version of the phone.
The T-Mobile or GSM Developer Edition would be better suited for your needs if you have a GSM carrier. They are both SIM unlocked, and both can have their boot loaders unlocked. Unfortunately, if you buy the T-Mobile version unlocking the boot loader does void the warranty, where as unlocking the boot loader on the Dev Edition doesn't.
The ATT version is also an option as it supports two LTE bands which are not used in the USA. Not sure if those bands will be helpful for you or not. The ATT version also doesn't support HSPA on AWS(1700mhz) that T-Mobile uses in the USA, the boot loader can not be unlocked, and I believe it is sim locked out of the box. The only reason to go with the ATT version over the T-Mobile is IF you need those two LTE bands the ATT model has, that the T-Mobile model lacks, and your carrier doesn't do 3G on AWS(1700).
Thank you so much for your input. The reason I initially wanted to get the VZW X because I've read I would of been able to put my sim in and it would work. Defeating the purpose of buying an unlock code.
But I did not know Tmobile MotoMaker X comes sim unlocked.
I will customise and purchase the Tmobile version. You saved me. Really appreciated kind sir.

There is some additional info on the ATT version vs T-Mo version vs GSM DE version in this thread -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2546466
In short, similar to what I said, the T-Mo and GSM Dev Edition are the same, both SIM unlocked and unbranded, except unlocking the bootloader on the T-Mo version voids the warranty, where as it doesn't on the Dev Edition.
The ATT version is like the T-Mo version, EXCEPT it is sim locked, includes carrier branding and bloat, can not unlock the boot loader. While the ATT X includes LTE bands 5 & 7 (which are not used in USA), it lacks support for 1700mhz(aws) HSPA support which T-Mobile USA uses.

I put a T-mobile SIM in my stock 16GB Verizon Moto x. Here is what works and doesn't.
First off, 4G works! in the South Jersey area and it is Blistering fast, I have exceeded 40MB speed test downloads twice, Several in the high 30s and I am avg in mid 20s. Uploads are averaging 20+/- . Compared to Verizon this is like comparing Fios to 1999 era dial up. the best I ever got on Verizon 4G was 14 download but average between 4 and 9 !
The Network notification switches a lot between 4G, "H" mode, whatever that is, just bars and another which I didn't catch quick enough to read ?
Battery has been amazing compared to my galaxy Nexus, I got 7.5 hours of Actual "Screen on Time" which included some GPS use and an hour of music streaming total phone up time was 34+ hours. How long it will perform like this is anyone's guess, today i got about 6.5 of Screen on time. I hope this inst a trend
Now for the bad news - Using it as a Phone. Incoming calls are fine but, making outgoing is a Pain in the A$$.
When I dial a number, (which is a hassle on this KitKat dialer) it often goes to the home screen or back to the dialer. The Call Fails. I am not sure if my dialer is buggy or its a compatibility problem. the KitKat Dialer on the Moto X is an exorcise in futility. Google are you listening? Why reinvent the wheel. All I want in my Dialer is a Number Pad! and a phone book.
When I Open dialer I see Recent calls up top, the whole middle section says all contacts and is otherwise blank, the bottom has the number pad icon, History and settings dots.
Clicking the number pad icon enlarges the bottom section, which then goes all white and removes the three icons. I have to then click the back arrow and re-click the number pad icon to bring it up the actual dialer. .
At this time I can dial. and then the call always fails on the first attempt. Sometimes it takes several attempts to go through.
When I click send on the dialer the 4G disappears and I am left with just the bars. they come back when call is done but sometimes take a few minutes to do so.
If you Kill the dialer app or swipe it away, coming back to it you will have the same issues when trying to get the number pad (two attempts) if you dont, the number pad will open on first attempt. but the calls will still fail on the first try.
I also cant use the internet when in a call, whether WiFi is on or off. Is this a T-mobile problem? I could use the net in Verizon when in a call when on 4G or WiFi
The Data is set to global mode but I have tried both the other settings. On boot up I get a warning saying the SIM is not recognized which I just swipe away.
I am also having this problem. After making a call, the music player and the phones "volume" aspects cease to work., Meaning, I get no sound out of the phone, Music, notifications alarms etc.. This happens almost every time and the only fix is a reboot
I disabled all Verizon Bloat and a lot of Moto Bloat as well This could be causing some of the bugs? But i have tested several different configurations all with the same outcomes.
Hope this helps and puts an end to the - Will it work or not questions. There seem to be a lot of Net Know it all's that flat out say a Verizon Moto x wont work with a T-Mobile SIM or some other undocumented "fact"
Nice insight, sure it will be useful for those who need it. But I've had the phone since late November.

[Q] Non XT1053 Models on T-Mobile?

Hello all,
Was thinking about trying out the Moto X. I had lurked somewhere in the general forums and thought I saw something that said that if we flashed the System ROM/Dump from something like the XT1053 to the XT1060, XT1058, etc, the phone would essentially become the XT1053 -- provided the Bootloader is unlocked, etc.
Do they all have the same radio, more-or-less, and are capable of just flashing to get it to work? I saw something about possibly getting T-Mobile to work on an "unlocked" XT1060, but issues with APN's, etc -- my goal is to not have to worry about that whatsoever -- and just use it with stock/without weird configuration (had to do this on a Sprint phone that was ported to cricket years ago -- was somewhat of a pain).
So yeah -- per the original question -- is the only difference on the phones the radio LOCKs based on Firmware -- and if I flash a XT1053 image on XT1060 phone, will that behave exactly the same as a XT1053 thereafter? (and kudos if anyone has any links so I can refer to that process later)
Thank you!
Vzn Moto X on T-Mo You should check out this thread.
I've been looking for info for a similar question. I have an xt1053 unlocked on T-Mo (very happy) but have considered getting a new phone and giving the X to my wife on Verizon through her work. I think the xt1053 can be flashed with Verizon stock rom, APN adjusted, new sim and used on their network, but can't confirm it. I think the X's have both GSM and CDMA bands available so it should be doable.
That seems to be the case, but looks like I'd need to find a 4.3 or before device to unlock the Bootloader (if I can), and then to flash a T-Mobile ROM to it to update it as necessary... Looks like an interesting option.

Just to clear it up:
The XT1053 can NEVER be used on Verizon. Never ever. Can you flash the VZW ROM? Sure (even though it's not safe). Can you actually get it to work on VZW? Absolutely not. The XT1053 is a GSM-only phone. Verizon is a CDMA network. That's like trying to play a cassette tape in a CD player - they just aren't compatible.
Now for the reverse scenario: The Verizon moto X has BOTH GSM **AND** CDMA radios inside, which is why you CAN use the VZW variant on T-Mobile.
And finally, you CAN use a non-XT1053 (for instance, the XT1058) on T-Mobile, but you might not get LTE or HSPA+ depending on the frequencies supported by the model you are referencing. Calls/texts will most definitely work.
The individual variants DO have totally different frequency bands that are supported. You need to check the frequencies supported BEFORE you make a purchase - otherwise you may well find that calls and texts work, but you can only get 2G (EDGE) data.
Good Luck guys.
So... that being said, it looks like T-Mobile is compatible with the XT-1058 -- 1058 shares all the same LTE bands as 1053, per Wikipedia; it does lack one of the bands for 3G on T-Mobile (1700), but does have the 1900 that I believe T-Mobile was moving its 3G service to, anyhow.
Now, the real question... if I unlock the boot loader, I wonder if I could flash a similar version'd (i.e. 4.4.3 -> 4.4.3 or 4.4.4 -> 4.4.4) image over. Looks like I'm pursuing a 1058 at this point... Thoughts?

Due to the different frequencies supported, the modem/radio files vary from SBF to SBF.
In some cases, people have flashed one model GSM X with the SBF from another GSM model and it has worked, and in other cases they have lost use of the radio.
Being on Verizon, I haven't experimented with cross flashing radio/modem files, nor have I kept up with it completely to know the whats, whys, etc. and certainly can't advise what is safe and what is not.
However, there are a few things I can tell you for sure...
If you cross flash, do NOT ever downgrade. You will risk bricking your device. If you mix and match parts (radio, recovery from one ROM with a system from another), do NOT take an OTA. It will either fail or BRICK your device.
In order to flash the SBF from another model X on your X (say flash a XT1053 SBF onto an XT1058) you need to have an unlocked bootloader.
With the XT1058 in the USA, that is an ATT Device. The only way to unlock its bootloader is to hope either Sunshine works, or the Chinese Middleman has the unlock code for your phone's IMEI.
The ATT XT1058 is SIM locked, so you'll have to buy a code for that too otherwise the phone will reject the non-ATT SIM.
Due to the radio chips and antenna setup inside the X, just flashing the SBF from another model (including its modem/radio files) might not get you support of additional frequencies.
The easiest thing to do.. Buy an XT1058, unlock its bootloader, sim unlock it, and use it as-is with a T-Mobile SIM. Root it, remove any bloat you want, and block future OTA's (unless you put the bloat back). It will work for all T-Mobile bands/frequencies except 4G/HSPA+ on AWS (i.e. 1700/2100Mhz HSPA+) In those areas you'll get EDGE. However as T-Mobile completes its "Network Modernization" around the country, it is shifting HSPA+ to 1900Mhz which the ATT XT1058 supports, so in those areas you'll get HSPA+ just fine.

What carrier for XT1050??

I have a Moto X XT1050. Its suppose to be carrier unlocked but every one i try i get the same, they cant activate.
It was recently activated on Alltel but the were just bought out by at&t. Idk what carrier this phone will work under
Can anyone help??
From what I recall, the XT1050 variant was made for regional CDMA carriers, and is probably SIM and Bootloader locked.
SIM lock will obviously not allow you to use it with a GSM based carrier's SIM. If its supposed to be SIM unlocked, that is another story... please provide specifics of what happens when "they cant activate."
Bootloader lock will prevent you from rooting, and/or flashing other firmware to it.

Ok so I called Verizon and the guy said it was carrier unlocked and they dont support it. I checked a few others through thier website but no luck.
The bootloader has been unlocked, the phone is rooted....the SIM I'm not sure about. It doesn't have SIM in it but it gets 2 bars of signal

So wait you say SIM unlocked? Is it the same as carrier unlocked?? If its unlocked then shouldn't I be able to activate with a verizon SIM maybe?
I used xt1050 in Indonesia use gsm carrier and it work fine. So i think my device is sim unlock

Verizon will not activate any phones that aren't Verizon branded. That's what the rep. means by "unsupported".
Some CDMA MVNOs may support it, I haven't checked around to see. Chances are T-Mo or AT&T will. As noted by another poster he found a GSM carrier in Indonesia that it works with. Chances are any European carrier will too, but that won't help him at the moment.
At&t won't take it either. I don't get it. What's the point in an unlocked phone if nobody will take it??

So even if I activate a Verizon SIM and put it in the phone it won't work??
And Verizon has activated a non branded before.

Verizon uses the XT1060... IF the listing on Wikipedia are correct, the XT1050 and XT1060 use slightly different frequency for CDMA.
Not to mention, as @glarepate has already said, Verizon will not activate a device that isn't Verizon Branded.
IN the OP you say its SIM Unlocked, now you say you're not sure about the SIM??

SIM unlocked = Carrier Unlocked yes, at least for GSM carriers. But the GSM carriers might not offer much support getting your device working.
CDMA carriers, like Verizon, might have the GSM side unlocked (i.e. you can pop an ATT or T-Mobile or other SIM in there and use it), but the CDMA side is LOCKED. Sprint, another CDMA carrier, has the GSM side SIM LOCKED on their 2013 X (XT1056)

The verizon rep said it is carrier unlocked. All I know is that my step dad had it on alltel CDMA. Alltel just got bought out so that's a no go there. But the rep ask if i had a sim card, i was thinking maybe i could pop in a verizon one and it would work. Idk much about GSM but im gonna take it to a phone place in town tomorrow and see what they say.
Thanks for all of your replies

Verizon doesn't sell the XT1050, so I wouldn't put any faith into what they tell you. If its not a Verizon Branded Xt1060, they will not activate it on their service PERIOD.
Verizon still uses CDMA for voice and 3G data. So even if you put a Verizon 4GLTE SIM in there, it wont work.
The Verizon XT1060 is GSM Unlocked out of the box. (This is due to FCC C-Block Rules), so IF this was a Verizon XT1060, you could put a T-Mobile, ATT, Rogers, etc SIM in there and use the GSM side.
BUT you said this phone is an XT1050. So its not the same.
Good luck.

Well something weird happened while my X was in recovery mode. It was plugged into my laptop and it popped up up "Install drivers for your XT1060." Do they all say that or is mine just being stupid?
How can I determine what model of the X I have, I'm so confused about this phone man.

Can you tell me any other carriers inside the US, lol. I already checked with AT&t, got the same thing as with Verizon. Not sure about T-Mo, that's the only one I haven't checked that picks up where I live. I have a great phone and can't even activate it. It kinda sucks.
And one more thing, sorry if I'm being a pain but why couldn't I use a Verizon SIM in it and it'd work??
I have used my XT1050 on Verizon by swapping out the Sim. It is carrier unlocked. I was also able to unlock my bootloader using the Motorola website.

By all means check with T-Mo. They are trying to get more customers and may be willing to work with you. They tend to be more flexible that AT&T anyway.
Ting uses Sprint (so that may not work for you if there is no coverage) and Cricket uses AT&T, both have BYOD.

I know there are others but these are just off the top of my head.

Sprint doesn't have coverage here, not sure about T-Mo. At&t gets coverage here now, they use to not.
The last carrier the phone was activated with was Alltel but they were bought out. I'll check and call around
Thanks everybody!!

THe FCC ID on the XT1050 and XT1060 appear to be the same.
I haven't done enough digging to confirm the similarities or differences between the XT1050 and XT1060. As I said earlier, IF the wikipedia entry for the 2013 X is correct, at least the CDMA frequencies are slightly different.
I have seen my Verizon Dev Edition XT1060 list another model at one point when trying to install drivers. (ANd I've always had the stock roms installed.) so I'd just say its a little strange from time to time.
Any querries you can do of the phone right now are all software based, so if you have an XT1050 ROM on the phone, the results would say its an XT1050. If you have a 3rd party ROM on there, you likely wont see an accurate model number.
The best way is... IF the phone has the original Moto back on it.. look for the small, very fine, print at the bottom on the back. Sometimes you have to tilt the phone side to side to get light to reflect off it just right... and If you have eyes like mine, you might need a magnifying glass to read it. It will have the FCC ID and the model number on it.

Hey @KidJoe, guess what? I called the postpaid department of Verizon and the lady told me that since my Moto X was on Alltel last that I could bring it to a store and they can put it in their system. I told her everything i knew about the phone. She said it can NOT be activated on prepaid BUT it can on postpaid. Got that same info from 2 or 3 other online support reps, lol.. So in that case you CAN activate NON verizon phones on Verizon.... oh AND I flashed the Verizon firmware on it and it works great.
