I do not have the stock OS installed or i would peek around and try this myself.
Currently im running CM 10.1.3 and i just tried to install/download this weeks B&N Free Friday app (it was a game) but it does not seam possible with CM. I do have the Nook reader app ( the green 'n' ) installed and the Free Friday eBooks download to the reader correctly, but i can not get the game (the B&N site does not offer an option to download the .apk file separately ether).
I thought if i can dual boot CM (installed to Nook) with the stock OS on a SD Card, i could just boot to the stock OS when i wanted to, download the B&N stuff, extract, save and reboot to CM.
So...
Will this work ?
Can you rip .apk files off a stock OS ?

If your stock on SD is rooted, then you can get the apk's, but whether they run on CM is another matter. I know the Amazon free apps will not run unless you are signed into their store.

Es file explorer should be able to back up app as an apk under stock rom.

Alittle follow up.
Used the info and downloads from this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2330083
and installed the stock OS to the SD card.
After that i installed Nova and the ES file Browser to the stock OS.
Opened up ES > Tools > App Manager then selected the B&N game which was downloaded from "Free Friday" and backed it up, saved the backed up .apk file to the SD Card.
Rebooted the Nook with out the SD Card in.
After getting to the CM desktop inserted the SD Card with .apk backup file and installed it.
Game worked fine. Just after the install the game needed to download the data files and that when fine, after all was done the game played fine.
Thanks to all for the help.

You are unable to download or install the APK's? The downloads on the NC go to the sdcard/download folder. Check there and see if they are just not showing up normally.
Make sure you're set up to install non-Marketplace apps. If you used AutoNooter for NC firmware 1.0.1, you can enable this using the Nook color tools.
Thanks I am an idiot. I took the SD card and forgot. Thanks.
The following apps fail installation (Amazon / Market / Ti Backup) after 1.2 update and Manual root. Did anyone get any of these to install and run?
All Angry Birds
NBA Gametime
Paradise Island
Also, new in the market:
HBO Go
Be sure to follow these instructions:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=13298075&postcount=92
As of right now, some apps like Angry Birds will only install WITHOUT the SD card in, while some of them require the SD card.
Angry Birds...
I got Angry Birds, Seasons, and Rio to install, with the sd card in. I had followed the install instructions to the letter including the fix for the market, all that after I had upgraded using the signed modified keep cwm side load zip. When I first tried in the Market the install process went into downloading, but wasn't downloading anything just stuck on dowloading. After I canceled it out and tried again they all downloaded.
I had downloaded other apps before, and I had also restored apps - no data - from my Titanium backups. I had also downloaded apps from Slideme.
I used the Manual Nooter "manualnooter-4-4-28.zip". I also restored live wallpapers - I don't really care about the performance hit - but I can't get my favorite "Water" to work, even though it works on my Nookie Froyo, CM7, and HC!
Sigh...
1.2 and Market
There have been several issues with Market in the 1.2 Nooter. The devs are working feverishly to get them resolved. HamNCheese seems to have found the solution, he's testing on a fresh install now and will post the fix once tested. Since it's been less than a week I'm looking forward to having everything up and running so soon!
Patience grasshopper... Good luck and have fun!
Angry Birds Install Fix
So I finally got AngryBirds to install on my 1.2 Manual Nootered nook.
1) Open Marketplace.
2) From the market, install your favorite file browser (mine is ES File Explorer).
3) Install Amazon app store.
4) Download Angry birds from Amazon app store. When the download is done, but before the install starts, exit the app store.
5) In the file explorer, go to /sdcard/Android/data/com.amazon.venezia/cache.
6) Copy the desired APK file (it was vnz57060.apk for me) over to the nook internal drive (note: file can't be moved, but it can be copied).
7) Remove the SD card from the nook.
8) Install AngryBirds by navigating to the app in your file browser and clicking on it.
9) Play.
It's a bit round about, but it gets around the issue of needing an SD card to download, but then not being able to install with an SD card in the device.
Good luck all!

I can confirm that this works, as it is how I got all my Amazon apps to install. Not too bad once you get the hang of it.
I managed to get my Angry birds installed by unzipping my Ti backup and using adb install. I guess adb disables enough of the SD card processes.
Can't wait til I can get a couple of new apps from the marketplace to install.
Manual Nooter - Angry Birds install
I tried these methods on my NC ML 4.5 install (from NC Development page GabrialDestruir)
Known Issues and Solutions:
"Download Unsuccessful" on Market v1.82
Having an SDCard in the slot fixes this.
Installation Error - Unknown Reason -18
Remove SDCard.
Find in Market and select for Install - This will Fail "Download Unsuccessful"
Using a File Manager to navigate to /cache/downloadnull
Select the download with the Angry Birds (or other app) Icon and install manually.
Reinsert SDCard---------
Didn't work for me even though the download shows up in ROM manager it will not install either with or without the SD inserted.
Could install it via Dropbox though. Anyone have any suggestions?
I used mybackup pro from last auto noot (1.1) to install no problems with all my games being install along with data .

I got Angry Birds to install via Dropbox and then used my back-up from 1.1 to get all the scores back and data, as well. It just buggs me that I can't get it to install via Market at all.
Copy the .apk in /cache/downloadnull, navigate up to /media folder, paste there, and touch to install.

I also confirm that angybirds and few other apps that fail to install from the market can be easily installed via adb.
For this to work you need to have adb installed on your computer. In NookColor Tools go to development and check "USB Debugging"
Attach Your nook to your computer and open adb
Command:
adb install <path to apk file>
I hope this helps. Thanks to LakerPaul for trying this out.
Cheers
Can someone just release the damn proper autonooter for 1.2? Will donate to developer.
I'm tired of keeping my 1.1 NC in wi-fi off mode.
I have tried both 1.2 Manual Nooter and HmC apk enabler with no luck no matter what I try I can't get the apk files to run. but at the same time I am still new to all of this.
Get the build.prop file and apply it, that will keep the update from happening.

I've got my nook color rooted with ManualNooter 4.5.18 but I'm not sure where to put the apk files. Do they go on the SD card and if so in which folder or just on the card. I also need to know how I then install or access them. Thanks
I just place the APKs in a folder called backup apps on the SC card, I don't think it matters much.
For some apps I did have to copy the APK to internal in the Nook, I just used a folder in the my files folder.
The important thing is that you can find the files once they are copied.
I use ES File Explorer to navigate to my APKs and install them. It's free from the market. As for where to put any APKs that you want to load manually, anywhere that makes sense to you should be fine. I have a folder on the SD card called "downloads" that I stick everything into.
When I use that program it says install blocked, and my phone is set to block installation. Any way around this?

You have the non market installs button clicked right?
Still rocking the Incredible with the XDA Premium App.
Yes I have the box checked
I have the button in nookColor Tools checked. Is there another??
Have Nook Color setup to dual boot from emmc. Interesting experience.
Have the standard OS rooted, etc. Using CM7 nightly for regular boot.
Issue is this. On the standard (Nook) OS I can go into the market (older market) and install the Net Swiss Tool (Net Tools (AdS) in the market) and textwarrior without any problems.
When I am booted into latest CM7 nightly with the latest market I can search and select these two apps but I do not get the install button. Acts like it thinks that this app does not apply to this OS/device. When I ran from the SD card for CM7 nightly (139 level I think) I could install but this load had the older market app.
I thought of trying the older market but do not have the apk file. Looks like the latest CM7 nightlies includes the new market. I did not install the new market separately.
Am wondering if there is a way to grab say the apk file from the Nook standard load and copy to sd card then boot CM7 and install from there.
Suggestions are welcome.

The new market is device aware and usually will not allow you to install software on devices that don't meet requirements (needs GPS, etc).
I don't have my laptop handy at work, but is the old market able to be pulled from the older gapps zips?

Looks like you were correct with the market being too smart.
Pulled the vending.apk from the old gapps zip. When I ran it asked if I wanted to remove and I said yes. What happened it looks like, is that the new market was removed but the old is now there and YES it sees the applications in question and allows installing.
THANKS for the suggestion. Just what I needed.

Just did a nightly update. The old market is still there. Yippy.

In the ongoing battle to not have the market crash on launch (rooted stock 1.3 running 4.6.16 and I fixed permissions with ROM manager) I've noticed that titanium backup seems to be a start for a few potential fixes. That said - I have to actually install the bloody thing and w/out market access that's proving tough.
I d'loaded the apk via. the built-in browser. It's on my SD card. But I can't seem to find any way for the built-in app-laucher to....well, launch. When I run the apk's from the browser I get 2 options:
Complete action (running apk) using:
* App Installer (which when clicked says it's unable to install and that I should archive then unarchive the app and try again)
* Package installer (which says there's a prob. parsing the package).
I've got what I assume to be non-market app's checked off in NC Tools (it's the blank box in NC Tools with nothing next to it that people talk about).
Any suggestions to get the bloody apk working?
Sounds like a badly packaged .apk. It also has that error whenever I try to install Honeycomb specific apps.

Did you enable non-market installs?
Do as Dizzy said or find another apk to install, if it keep crashing then try install some another ROM like CM7.

In the NC tools I do have what is supposed to be the non-market installs checked off (but with it being a blank box of text next to it, I'm not positive).
I guess it might be a bad apk, but I got it from the TB site directly. I tried ES File Explorer too. It would seem all apk's I'ev tried give the same error. I'm not sure if maybe B&N somehow hobbled the ability to install apk's with their 1.3 update.

I had CM7 on for a few days, but with the market not working well on it (market determined that the nook wasn't compatible with any of the apps, even with the LCD resize), and with a subscription to PC mag via. B&N I went back to stock rooted 1.3.
Any other suggestions? I was thinknig of trying MIUI if things in CM7 or the Nootered stock don't resolve themselves.

MIUI is just a themed outdated cm7. I don't see how that would help.
Can you get any .apks to install?

I just finished the Android SDK/Java route to push apk's to the NC. I've successfully installed Titanium, ES File explorer, Opera Mobile and SwiFTP to my NC via the SDK route. While I don't have market access, I guess it will be ok for now....I sure wish the Market worked properly though....nice 'n convenient. Ah well.
[EDIT] One thing I did try to get the market to work was uninstall Flash 10.3. I put on 10.2 & reset permissions. No dice for what it's worth....if somebody's keeping a list of things that don't work.

Interestingly, if I try to use the default browser to install appbrain (www.appbrain.com/install), or even Opera mobile to install it, .... it results in a flash screen (rotating flash dots in the middle) that crashes after a second....just like when I (attempt to) launch the Market.
