[Q] US Repair Center - What exactly was done? - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Had to return to get screen replaced. Asked very nicely that they not re-flash...said they would try. I did not expect much but now that I have it back I am a little confused as to what was/was not done.
Still showing Tampered and S-Off recovery is still intact. The data is all gone and has the stock look.
The part that confuses me is that it still shows Revolution HD as the software version.
I have a backup so not stressed but just want to make sure there has not been some "tweak" that is going to bite me.
What say ye? is it just reflashed to stock rom? I assume I just need to wipe and go again.
BTW some odd images left on the phone...happy to share for you forensics types but don't want to add more noise to the board.
TIA!

1. Was this the official HTC repair center, or some other guys?
2. Most likely, they looked for the factory reset function present within Android so that they could run their own testing/diagnostic app to make sure that your screen was functioning according to a number of predetermined tests (multiple touch, drag, etc etc).

Yes it was the official repair center. The images and vids left on the phone was from thier testing. I did find it interesting that the only non stock app left was Superuser.
Can I just go about reflashing and upgrading firmware as per normal?
Appreciate the input.

That is actually quite fascinating. Although technically they are not allowed to, they usually make quite a fuss if you have a rooted phone. But in your case, you had a hardware failure, and that is something that they are legally bound to service, even if you somehow managed to dump iOS on it.
As long as you are still S-OFF, your phone is fine Put your stuff back on it and feel free to join us in the Sense 5.5 Android 4.3 excitement.

Very much appreciated...and I think I figured out why they did not sqawk...and guy with a bottle of R&R Lotion on his desk for all to see...must be pretty easy going (scrubbed the name and email addresses to protect the mellow).
Thanks again.

huh? what bottle of R&R lotion?

Problem! Please help! G1 goes to sleep and doesn't wake back up.

I don't know what caused this.
I got my G1 today. It worked for probably 2-3 hours perfectly fine.
I had an app freeze (either Barcode Scanner or Lock 2.0) and had to do a full hard reset.
Now, whenever the phones screen darkens or I put it to sleep manually, it WILL NOT come back up.
I have factory reset three times now to try and get this to work.
When the screen is black, all buttons on the phone still light up and so does the LED indicator up top. I had my phone set to use a locking pattern screen at one point during one reset to test out and when the screen went black, I was still able to try and log in by doing my pattern. It unlocked, but still showed nothing on the screen.
Please help!
I've tried:
Turning Wi-Fi off
Turning 3g Off
Disclaimer: Yes, I've searched. I can find other users with the same problem but none of them seem to have a solution.
Phone is NOT ROOTED and has the factory ROM.
Update 1: Update: It only freezes/blacks out when I try to wake the phone from one of the front key buttons.
If I'm sliding to unlock, it seems to be fine.... (but if I've already tried to open from the front it doesnt)
Update 2: If I mash all the buttons in random orders for about a minute or two it seems to come back. Anyone have any idea?
Update 3: I'm thinking this has to be an issue with none of the buttons waking the phone up when closed. If I lock the phone with the "END" key, and then click the front "END" Key again, nothing happens. If I slide the phone open, and click it twice - the phone wakes up.
Update 4: Confirmed update 3. Phone will not unlock via front keys unless it's slid open (or open enough to trigger).
I would really, really appreciate help with this.
Hate to bump this, but I've added some detail on the top and bottom. Have to leave for work, hopefully someone might have an idea by the time I get back.
Well you can try to reload the factory rom or root it and try a custom rom and see if the problem still exist. If it is still happening then it would be a hardware problem and need to be sent in. And yes you will still be covered under warranty with HTC since the phone is still less than a year old.
I had a problem with exactly the same symptoms. It turned out that the SD card was cocked-up so home, core, and some other process would hang trying to read it and the phone would not wake-up the screen any more.
Did you try removing the SD card and seeing if that helps?

Removed the SD card and rebooted the phone.
No change ( still acts the same way ).
Did you factory reset after or was it an instant change?
I don't mind losing data to fix this.

Wouldn't I have to root to reload the factory rom? Is there a rooting tutorial based just on that?

If you use the official update you don't have to have root. There are some links on here. I'll see if I can find it for you.
https://android.clients.google.com/updates/signed-gfh-CRB43-from-CRB21.c88b03d2.zip
That should be it, but can't confirm since I'm on my work computer.
Some thoughts--may be useful, or not:
Mine was doing that too, but it was caused because I dunked mine underwater during an urban exploring mission. I dried it out, replaced the LCD screen, and everything worked until it would go to sleep. Then I had to do a variety of button mashes and opening the keyboard to get it to come back to life. Sometimes it just wouldn't come back. The problem grew worse over time.
If wiping and reflashing (no need to use a stock ROM) gets you nowhere, then I would suspect a deeper hardware issue. I see you bought it used, can you contact the seller?
If you want to check for water damage, take out the battery and look at the tiny circular sticker in the battery chamber--if it is not white, it has been water damaged. (And the warranty will not be honored.)
Other Lesson: No urban exploring with G1s.
The link didn't work, btw.

Zero water damage.
That's great news zeabrid! In that case, I agree with an earlier poster--you should be covered by warranty. Wipe and flash a good rooted rom, and if that doesn't work, revert to stock and demand a new phone.

Do you have a link to a guide that teaches how to do this (with the stock rom)? I can only see a few that're spread out.
I'm not entirely sure my phone can boot into safe mode/disk mode, so we'll see about that.
Another update: When I boot into safe mode, the same problem exists.
Edit: Just emailed HTC.
This can officially no longer be considered a software issue.
I just rooted and installed a standard ROM. Same issue.
It happens all the way at boot now, just realized this.
HTC emailed me back and told me to call them directly. Will do that tomorrow.
if I find a solution I'll post it immediately.
Alright, my phone is officially ****ed.
Restored back to the original rom.
New problem now: When I close the screen, the backlight goes out and doesn't come back on. (I can still barely see everything, but there's no light).
Calling HTC today.
Edit: Called T-Mo support. They suggested deleting programs to free up space (I only have 2 downloaded and to reset (already done)
=(
Edit2: Called and placed a RMA with HTC after talking to two of their customer support reps. Thankfully, they forwarded me up the support tier after only about a minute with each person when they realized I had already tried all other steps.
The RMA process was surprisingly easy. I have everything set up, and when I get paid (tomorrow) I'm going to ship the phone out. I was given an estimation of 7-10 business days for full repair and return shipping (which sounds great in my opinion - I've never sent anything in for warranty work before).
I'll update you guys once I hear from their repair team on whether or not I'm going to be covered under warranty (I told them that the phone was a gift to me), and if not what the cost is going to be. Like I said earlier in the thread, all water damage indicators are clear and I have unrooted my phone, so I should be covered hopefully.
Thanks to anyone who posted in this thread.

Yea it defitenly sounds like a hardware issue and needs to be fixed. Glad your getting it fixed and you'll be covered no problem.
Do you know if they charge return shipping if it's covered under warranty? I have to pay my own shipping there, and they had me put a credit card down on file in case I either bail when its already there or they need to charge for repair.

To be honest I don't know the answer but would like to say they would pay for it. But they would have to let you know of the charge before they apply a charge to a credit card.
wow its weird cause im just having a similiar issue now.. in landscape mode.. phone and back light work perfectly. but one i close the screen everything goes virtually blank, everything is running perfectly just the screen light wont turn on..
will try some of your previous methods.. hopefully it works on mine..=/
thanks, for the info zeabrid

master reset

Can I do a master reset? I'm rooted & using CM w/kspec.
Considering sending my phone in for replacement/repair. Not sure if I can tolerate the off-color screen & cycling auto-brightness. Thought it wasn't a big deal and I'd wait for an update - but after reading other forums I'm not sure if or when there ever will be an update.
The guy from Google suggested I try to reset the phone. I know that wont fix anything but thought I'd give it a try...
What do y'all think? Should I just put up with the slight off color screen & hope for a software fix? (That's what the HTC guy said to do). Or should I try to exchange it.
I'm rooted I know but HTC is still good about replacing rooted phones right? I should just instal the stock rom right before shipping?
Srry for the multiple questions
..........
When you just rooted it is possible to revert via factory reset. If you flashed anything else then your bootloader is unlocked and there is no known method to revert that. warrenty is void. maybe HTC won't notice, but if they do, you would have to pay at least the shipping charges.
if you have already flashed another rom, do you have amon_ra's recovery image? there is a wipe -> factory reset option. there is another one in the settings menu somewhere (on the "normal" os), but i don't know what it really wipes and what not.
to bad you guys live in the US. i could even break all warrenty seals and get a repair (at least for products I bought here)
HTC has been quite good about honoring the warranty on hardware defects regardless of unlock/root.
thanks
i dont know what to do. the phone looks fine really now but that is because im using it in a bright room. its only when on low brightness or in a dark room that it looks really purpley...
guess i will return it... because there is also the auto brightness issue as well... or do i wait for the supposed software update??

Recovery/Backup from broken screen

Well, dropped my phone and screen (not glass) is now broken. I can see only a bit of the top of the screen (and that slowly goes away) and cannot use touch of course.
Is there a way through dl mode (recovery mode may be possible, however i find it hard to believe i'll hit the right options with no visuals) to access phones flash drive and backup stuff from there ?!
Thanks in advance,
David
I don't think there is any harm to just send it for repairs. Your data in your phone isn't gonna be erased since you're fixing the hardware.

Thanks for the response but well, not quite trusting the lab entirely.
More importantly, I need to reinstall provider's ROM and unroot before i do that (warranty crap here) and would like to backup whole drive before doing that.
I believe that is impossible. "There's no way a blind man knows how to get to his destination". You would have to reflash your phone from stock I suppose after it is back from repairs.
Additional advice - Read if you really don't want to reflash your phone from stock.
And I sent my phone to Samsung for repairs before. I was on a custom ROM and obviously I broke it in terms of Software and it was totally my fault. However, it was so damaged that Samsung could not tell what's wrong with it because my phone would not boot at all. My warranty was not void and phone fixed for free.
So, by experience, you might stand a chance of keeping your warranty as there's no way they are going to know you messed around with it and they would not check your phone in terms of software if it is categorized under hardware fault.

HTC One M7 Touchscreen Dead

Hi all,
Anyone else having any issues like this? I see this was a common problem on that HTC One X as well (thread for reference: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2010897 ). I haven't seen any reports of this and I searched the forums and the internet...maybe I've had bad luck because of the similar name, but I haven't heard anything official from XDA or otherwise
Occasionally, it seems that the middle area can work if there is enough static on the screen. Here is my screen map to show what I'm talking about:
UPDATE:
How strange. This issue started happening on Saturday, but on Monday when I was about to go down to T-Mobile to return the phone for a warranty repair, it suddenly fixed itself. I have full screen functionality. I didn't change any settings, didn't flash anything new, etc. The phone was never turned off (other than when I was testing if a restart or power cycle would fix it). I'll keep monitoring it in any case...

Exactly, I haven't heard before this similar problem... I think you are the first.
Have you installed a special app ?
Have you tried to reboot before to use it a another time ?
But I think that it's a problem with your touchscreen. So the best you can do, it's to send it back to HTC
This is definitely a digitizer defect. Only fix is to replace the glass/digitizer. Send it back to HTC as soon as possible because it will only get worse over time. I had the same problem with my one X

I have the same problem; RMA time it seems. I am a bit worried if they will accept it under warranty or not, because I unlocked the bootloader .

Did you find out if it can be replaced under warranty if you unlock your boot loader? I also have the exact same problem on mine the top part of my screen which has a completely bunked touch sensor it goes nuts if used touch anywhere near the top of the phone..
But like you I unlocked my boot loader and installed quite a few different roms thinking it would solve the problem… I am wondering if there is a way to relock the boot loader and make it look like it never happened? Although I doubt it because they probably have the information about the phone at HTC since they sent me the token to unlock it..
Well, apparently there isn't much you can do if you are on hboot 1.54 (like me), since you need to be s-off to erase the *tampered* flag if you just relock it will stay.
I didn't send it for repairs yet, but I will report when I do.
Hello guys,
i've got the same problem, my phone just started to act very wired, my top part of the display is not responsible, seems part of touchscreen is broken. Have you solved it somehow or you applied for warranty.
the same situation -bootloader unlocked and flashed different roms, I'm S ON, so can't flash RUU to see if it's software problem or HW
Did you brought it back to HTC? Since today im having the same problem.. Same for me, unlocked. Guess I'll have to pay

Yes I will report back when I flashed RUU. I'm pretty 100% this will not solve the problem but it's worth the try.
I'm also really struggling if I should it send back to HTC or not, I have this feeling they will flash my Hboot to 1.54 so newer customers can't get their hands on S-Off. A local telephone repair-dudey could fix my screen for 170 euro which is a pretty good deal.
I Sent HTC an e-mail with the current situation and still waiting for a reply, will report the whole story back

Okay I flashed RUU but with no avail. Im still having a line in my screen that doesnt work! I'm thinking of just letting it repair by the local telephone guy. HTC here in the netherlands work with an external company called Dynafix which will take about 3-4 weeks of time to repair it, and I'm also afraid that they will upgrade my hboot to 1.54 so I will lose the ability to s-off. (Not 100% sure, but just feeling it)
I hope you have enough information, we're both screwed without replacing a digitizer.. oh well, karma will strike back someday
They won't put you back to s-on, read in another thread that some phones ship with s-off and htc do not have any way of knowing who set the flag to off
Sent from my HTC One using xda app-developers app
HTC should replace your ones under warranty regardless of bootloader/soff. It is a physical hardware issue and has nothing to do with the software on the phone.

not good news, i was hoping that the problem might be fixed once RUU is flashed at least we know that repair center is the only option here
i would suggest to send the phone to HTC, better than to give it to someone to fix it, this phone is quite complicated when speaking about opening, but up to u and i think u will get a new phone if u send it to htc repair center... so no signs that the phone was opened etc.. up to u, the same with my phone, if i apply for warranty i will have to wait about 30 days, but for now no go without LOCKED and TEMPERED removed..
if i had to apply for warranty with tempered...no s off in upcoming few months, i will arrgue with HTC that screen HW itself doesn';t have anything with software, even if there would be status "hahaha htc" and not unlocked i will not pay for their crap more money
Well I have really no idea what happened but the phone decided to fix itself and I no longer have digitizer problems anymore.. So far its working (for over more then 8 hours already).
But yeah, you are right, it's probably better to bring it to HTC then a local repair shop when it get's broken again.
Well that's that, I really hope your phone kicks back to it's normal state aswell!! (I received an email regarding my issue and they said a factory reset would help, I doubt it though.. flashed a RUU and the problem was still there)
Same Problem ( is it HW or SW )
hello guys , i have the same problem as shown in the pic attached
i made HTC secret code and the Line Drawing test shows the problem well
, i made hard reset but still the same ,
i bought the phone from Amazon.com USA and now am in egypt
dont know if i can send it to HTC support
btw the problem time is unstable , sometimes working fine and other becoming weird any help ?
UPDATE : after contacting HTC support they replied to me with the below :
'' Thank you for your email regarding your HTC device. I apologize for the issues you have experienced with the device functionality, Mohamed.
There are a number of reasons that your device could be having this issue. It can be caused by an application, task killers, or software issues. To determine which one, we will need to put the phone in safe mode. Safe mode is a method that allows the device to run without non-essential applications.
Press and hold the power button until the power menu comes up then press and hold on the Power off option and pop up will come up with the option to reboot into safe mode.
After you put it in Safe Mode, try using it without third party applications for a at least 24 hours to see how the device works. If it does not have this issue, then it is one of your applications. Try adding them back one at a time to see which one is responsible.
If the issues still persist please contact HTC repairs: HTC RMA Center, 1-866-449-8358 8AM - 1AM ET 7 days a week. That way you can go through the repair process as it is a little complex and we would need to speak to you on the phone to setup the repair ticket.
If you have any other questions about your device please feel free to contact us via email at any time.''
i tried it but still the same , i think it is hardware issue :'(
Can anyone confirm whether this S-OFF software can re-lock the bootloader and make it look like the warranty is still intact ? I need to send my phone back to HTC for a new digitizer stat
Yeah it's possible. Here's a guide for you: http://www.htc1guru.com/guides/return-stock-guide/

SM-N950F Unresponsive Touch Screen

Hey folks
Got my Note8 couple weeks ago, and not too long ago, the touch screen started abruptly not working correctly. It's explicit to using fingers, with S Pen all works fine. The symptoms are usually that I can't pull down the notification bar, and if I try, the whole screen locks up and only way to get back control of the screen is to use screen lock and reopen the phone, or using S Pen. It doesn't work any better with my flip cover on or off. Was just thinking, does people here have same symptoms, and since here are people who really know about this stuff, I would like to ask that is this more a software problem than a hardware one. Does someone possibly have a fix for it/developing one? Thanks!
I had that issue, but oddly only after sim-unlocking my phone with a code from a company.
I ended up flashing a completely stock, unbranded version of the firmware and everything (minus my camera force closing) was fixed. It was even quicker, and didn't have any lag!

You're welcome!
I've flashed the latest BTU version for myself (as I'm in the UK)
The best thing to do is look at UPDATO, go to firmwares, type in N950F and sort by country (pick yours) and then click on "date". It'll arrange it by the newest available.
Updato is basically sammobile; but it has faster downloads.
It's all legitimate and provided you flash it correctly, you won't have any issues regarding Knox and warranty.

Hey, could you share some advice as to flash a device without breaking warranty? Even though in the end it doesn't really matter since I have all-inclusive warranty, so if I end up bricking the warranty I can just trash the phone and get money from it that way, but it could be nice to try and retain the warranty still. Thank you!

Flashing an official ROM via ODIN won't mess with the warranty (i've never had to use the warranty- fingers crossed!).
It's pretty simple; in the file you download, each individual file within the *.zip begins with a few letters, i.e AP or BL.
Put each into the relevant field in ODIN (they also use the same letters- AP, BL etc).
Put the phone into Download Mode, connect it, make sure you have your drivers installed and then run it.
Simple really.
Also, just a few things I do when flashing out of habit- I don't know if it affects it, but it's just stuff I always do out of paranoia:
Use the original cable, and do NOT connect the wire to a USB hub, plug it directly into your PC.
