Question: AT&T update info - Moto X Q&A

Hey guys,
I've read around a bit but I wanted to just ask the question to get a completely black and white answer. I recently purchased a Moto X through AT&T and without reading the forums first I accepted the OTA.
I understand that as of right now there is no "solid" root method for me. If I had NOT accepted the OTA, is there an easy root method available? Is it permanent?
I'm curious because if it's as simple as me exchanging my Moto X and paying a $35 restocking fee to (hopefully) get one without the OTA, that may be worth it for a quick solution.
If the root method is still shaky even without the OTA that would make my decision easier.
Input? Thanks in advance. :good:

No root for latest version period.

new Moto's are being shipped with the new OTA on ATT at least. You may still get one in store that has not been updated yet but I would check before you pay a restocking fee. The root is stable but moving forward to newer updates and other things is not certain but we have high hopes. Also, if you dont want to pay the restocking fee just take it to the store and complain enough about some warranty issue like the battery drain is bad and you compared it to other devices and something is wrong. I only asked the guy at Vzw for a new phone, told him I toyed with phones and I know this one is bad. He didn't even look at the phone and just sent in a request for a new certfied pre owned replacement or whatever. Which actually fixed the warranty issue I knew I had.

[Q] Dev phone worth buying?

Hi, dear developers, did you all buy the dev phones from google? will the price cheaper buying it this way?
And since recently the Nexus One is rumored to be the next dev phone, I'd like to know if you guys can purchase it from google now? And what is (would be) the price if it's available?
Price is 529, and it is the next dev phone and yes you can purchase it now.
Thanks a lot for the information.
What is your feeling for this phone? Seems it's not as competitive as the newer phones right now. In the last one or two months there are so many new android phones out.
If you want to make Froyo rom or apps for Froyo, is it a good fit?
Anything is possible, it's up to you, your choice. It's up to you if you're willing to put 529 for it, but a lot of developers do have this phone, just look at the Nexus section here. But I won't pay 500 bucks for something I can't see before buying (that's whole another story). And the N1 will be the first to get any new Android updates in the future, cause it's Google's baby. It's up to you now.
The "dev" phone is an unlocked nexus 1, nothing more nothing less. The last dev phone was the Ion/G1. Do you want a nexus 1? Do you have $529 to waste on a phone that you dont really need to use as a dev phone?
Simple questions to ask yourself.
The "dev phone" is a regular, bone stock, GN1. No difference. Bootloader IS LOCKED exactly the same as it always was, and it still accepts "fastboot oem unlock". Note that the warranty details DO NOT in ANY WAY suggest that doing so will affect the warranty IN ANY WAY WHATSOEVER, which some people MISTAKENLY thought was previously part of the warranty, where it was actually just in the FAQ designed to prevent dummies from screwing themselves up.

[Q] Simple Question(s)

Hey, thanks for taking the time to read this, I appreciate it. Well, let's get to it. This is my first phone a plan, all my other phones prior had been using a sim card and I had paid for it fully. This is the first time I bought a phone that I am paying off monthly on a Basic Sprint plan.
Will Rooting or Flashing my device cause any issues with my carrier or incur any extra fees. (I can't afford that atm)
Once my device is flashed/rooted will I lose connection to my account?
(Super Silly question) To Root my device will I lose all my information?
Seeing that I am content with the stock ROM, I'm just looking for the benefits of being rooted, should I go ahead and root my device?

No
You might have to have Sprint reprovision your phone.
Yes
I've had mine since launch without root, and it's honestly the first phone I've ever had where I didn't really find the need to root it. And I like fully stock phones.

Thanks for answering!
I have this feeling the Sprint will give me sh*t for rooting it for some reason. Like make things complicated for me.
I rooted and changed roms within 5 minutes of owning mine. Have sent 2 back now for device issues. The guy that works at sprint thought it was cool that I was doing that.
For troubleshooting reasons it would be a PITA to fix but if you know what you are doing you could take care of most stuff on your device.

Yeah, I think I'm going to keep stock for now. People usually thinks it's some big thing to flash roms and root.

I did because I was really sick of sense
If you have to send your phone to htc for any reason outside of Sprint (warranty issue), and they find out you unlocked your bootloader, they could charge you a few hundred dollars to repair or refuse to help you at all. There are ways around this, but nobody else mentioned this scenario. Just throwing it out there.

[Q] So I got a Moto X for free today... (AT&T XT1058)

And I've spent the past 1-2 hours reading around 50-ish threads and several hundred posts, and while I'm sure I already know the answer to this question I'm still going to ask it outright.
The specifics:
AT&T XT1058 pure stock Moto X running Android KitKat 4.4.4 as up to date as possible.
Is it rooted? NO
Is the bootloader unlocked? NO
Now, based on those two facts, and after reading all about SunShine (which is pretty awesome so thanks for that one, jcase and the crew that developed it), it seems if I want root then my only potential option at this point in time is "The Chinese Guy" if he's still in business to get a proper bootloader unlock which of course opens this device up entirely to whatever I might care to do.
Honestly the only reasons I care about root access would be for Titanium Backup (since I did purchase that in the past so it's like if I can't make full use of the app itself (because it requires root access to really do everything it's capable of doing) the money was more or less just given away for nothing, and a few other apps that require root level privilege (ES File Explorer root access, a few Wi-Fi tools, that's about it).
Of course, having the fully unlocked bootloader would let me play around with ROMs, kernels, and whatever I damned well please.
So the actual question I hinted at with the beginning of this post is:
For the moment, am I correct in the belief that my only option at all at this time meaning today and into the immediate foreseeable future to do anything with this device is "The Chinese Guy" ... if I want to be able to do more things with the device?
This is my second Moto X, the first one was the trial offer I took advantage of for a penny and I did enjoy the device while I had it, so when I got the chance to get one for free earlier today (traded a laptop for it that was also given to me) I jumped at it.
I understand that with 4.4.4 on it I can't roll back to any previous version, sadly, and that since SunShine requires root to even test the device (the temp root thing, ain't happening) that's a dead end leaving "The Chinese Guy" again as the only potential.
Just looking for a confirmation, that's all.
Thanks...
Yes, on the XT1058 from ATT with 4.4.4 on it, that is the latest rom/update, you can't downgrade (without risk of bricking the phone) and the China Middleman is the only hope of unlocking your bootloader and/or rooting. (to be clear, I mean the China Middleman doesn't actually root your phone, but once bootloader unlocked you will be able to root)
And yes, having an unlocked bootloader is the only way to flash any rom that isn't the stock Moto rom for the ATT XT1058.
And yes, Sunshine wont work since you can't even temp root 4.4.4.
I am not aware of any new root processes for 4.4.4 with locked bootloader coming, or ways to make Sunshine work on 4.4.4. If something newer is coming, it either wasn't announced yet, or I missed the announcement.
That being said, since it sounds like you got this phone used, rather than new.. who knows what the original owner did to it.. If it was someone who followed these boards, there is a SLIGHT chance they were trying to be tricky, and upgraded only parts of your phone to 4.4.4. Boot into FastbootAp/Bootloader mode, and check the version (second line from the top). If it is 30.B7, you're fully on 4.4.4 and you are stuck. If your bootloader is not 30.B7, then you might have a chance to downgrade your rom safely, and then use sunshine (post the version if its not 30.B7)
Thanks for the info, and yes the bootloader is 30.B7 (2014-06-23). Oh well... it is most definitely used but still in excellent condition (just some cosmetic scrapes and scuffs on the rubberized corners of the back cover). It's a good phone, a solid one, so I'll hang on to it for the time being, just need to get the carrier unlocked for use with T-Mobile but that'll be after the first of November.
It's a Moto X for free, I suppose I really shouldn't complain.
Just hit up jcase on IRC, who makes Sunshine. He's currently working on supporting XT1058 with 4.4.4 -- I have the same one, with the same bootloader. Wait a bit. Looks like he usually publishes stuff every few months. I think we may have an early Christmas gift. Well, it will cost us $25, though.
If he's able to do it then I'll look into it at that time, I may just offload this for a profit, not really sure at the moment. The camera is really depressing, was just outside taking some images here in downtown Las Vegas because we have this huge music festival this weekend (www.lifeisbeautiful.com) and the picture quality is just utterly abysmal - I tried the latest updated Motorola Camera app, Focal, Google Camera, and several others and they all just can't make the actual physical camera do anything decent. Exposures are always wrong, focus is seemingly permanently soft, there's no sharpness at all to most anything regardless of the lighting conditions, etc.
I could ramble on forever but, again it was free so I guess I'll shut up.
I had no idea that I posted something illegal my bad

I used the Chinese guy to unlock, and haven't looked back. I still run Stock w/ Root, and was worth the $45 to not worry about it anymore. If your gonna keep it, get the unlock code.
Well that Chinese middleman isn't responding to contacts by anyone at the moment so that's a dead end and this one was built on 11-11-2013 so he'd probably not be able to get me one anyway. I just got the carrier unlock code last night and used it without issues. I put it on craigslist along with the Motorola Skip I had and never used, maybe someone will want it. It's still a great phone, but for me, the lack of being able to root it or most anything else makes it basically not something I really need these days. I have a "dumbphone" that works fine and has done so for many years.
Thanks for the info and suggestions, peeps...

Selling on Swappa, Should I unroot??

Just as the title says, I am looking to sell my verizon s6 edge on Swappa. I am undecided if I should take it back to stock or not before I list it. I feel like a huge amount of normal users may be scared away by the fact that it's rooted on oe2 with clean rom.
What do you guys think? I am wanting to get the 64 gig moto x pure so I can unlock the bootloader and have my way with it, so I think a $500 price for a mint phone would be fair, but I just don't want to scare away potential buyers.
Opinions??

~90% of users do not even know what root means.
If you sell the phone to one of those users the buyer will likely panic and ask why every update is failing to install.
Your smartest move would be to unroot through Odin.
If the buyer wants root he/she can root.

Actually, they couldn't root, because the latest update doesn't allow it. I guess I just hate to unroot a phone and render it unrootable because rooting is at the core of my nature, lol. I just have to remember it won't be mine to tinker with anymore, haha

This thread gives the appropriate firmware used to unroot.
Every time I use it, I am able to root again.
It restores the phone to the original factory settings, the OC3 build.
OC3 obviously can be rooted.

I got ya, that's a good Idea. I will just sell it on oc3. If they know what they are doing then they can take it from there.

I totally agree. At least keep it on the rootable firmware. Its a smaller percentage of people who root, but many of those people use swappa. Its even an option for your listing. I have myself bought an mdk s4 just because it was the only place I could find the last vzw Samsung device with an unlocked bootloader. I payed more for it too, after mine broke. I would imagine those interested in a rootable s6 edge would probably do the same.

When I sold my galaxy s4 the person buying the device wanted it to remain rooted, and paid extra for it. It all depends on the buyer.

Stupid questions regarding getting a new Samsung Galaxy S5 G900A (AT&T)

If I were to right now get the Samsung Galaxy S5 AT&T ( http://www.att.com/cellphones/samsung/galaxy-s-5.html#sku=sku7120234 ), is it known whether it will have a rootable version or not?
If I am unable to root the phone and keep it rooted, I'll most likely have to go with another phone. (Which would be a shame.)
I've read up some on the situation, and it seems as long as it is version 4.4.4 I would be fine.
And I would be able to update while keeping root if I follow this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/att...w-to-update-to-g900aof2-5-0-keeproot-t3149146
So, I suppose the real question is how sure is it that you'll get the 4.4.4 (rootable) version of android?
And are there any downsides to doing so right now?
(I have a rooted phone now: An HTC First. The failed "Facebook" phone. It was very easy to root and receives no updates, so it's been hassle free, but it'd be nice to finally update.)
I'm not sure if you are buying direct from AT&T or not, but I think it's been confirmed that they have only been selling S5s with 5.0 on them out of the box.
Root may come eventually for those who have factory Lollipop images on their S5s, but I wouldn't count on it. Unfortunately, the window for an easy root on a brand new AT&T branded S5 has closed.
How much are you willing to spend? I'd consider selling my almost mint condition rooted 5.0 GS5 for the right price. I just got it in the Spring and it's in fantastic shape.

Well, I was going with this phone because it is 'free' with the existing contract.... Looking at the other 'free' options now.

If root is a deal breaker I suggest not getting the GS5 unless you are positive that you can get one with KitKat out of the box.
That being said...I have an unrootable one on AT&T that I got free for extending my contract; and I found that their 5.0 build for this phone is probably the most stable phone I've ever had on AT&T ever. Besides the battery and back cover nag alerts and not being able to save Amazon video to the SD card...I have no other complaints re: not having root. But even when I had devices that were rooted...they were stock-rooted. As always...YMMV.
