[Q] having trouble flashing rom into samsung captivate I897 - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi there
My Captivate was running on 2.1 Eclair, i updated it through kies mini to 2.3 GB. then i rooted/installed CW recovery and then Successfully Flashed ICS_4.0.3_MR1-RC4.2_captivate. one day i decided to try another rom. I tried the same recovery method but it didn't flash. i tried 2 different roms but all in vain ! i got error just after few seconds and it was something like "sd card not found error 7"
please help me what to do??

Go back to stock ROM and start from there. Read this Guide now to update the ROM to JB.

Well thanks for the reply. I'll take your Advice and will get back to you with the outcome..

successfully flashed stock GB. but now market doesn't allow me to sign in, it says "can't establish a reliable connection to the server. this could be a temporary problem or your phone may not be provisioned for data services" i tried many times with different time intervals. what to Do?

Check your data connection - WiFi settings for local connection and APN for cellular network.
Do you want to stay on GB or you want to upgrade to JB? You don't need the market in GB for upgrading process.

Ok i figured out a way to LOG IN to google play. I factory reset my cappy and then it allowed me to sign in. ok fine now i'm having a new ISSUE . My Root/cw recovery all gone as i flashed STOCK GB. i tried rooting my phone the same way i did before (kk4 easy root), sadly it didn't work this time, Device status doesn't show "DEVICE" as it should according to Instructions, it shows "UNKNOWN", but still i tried with no success whatsoever !
super one click didn't work for me before and it doesn't work now !
what should i do now ?

Try heimdall

Corn Kernel + Heimdall installer package is included in the guide. It will give you CWM and root, if you need it. No root needed to upgrade the phone to JB. Custom JB ROMs come with CWM and root. Flash CM10.1.3 Stable as your first JB. Follow the instructions. You need to flash JB twice when coming from stock GB, first to repartition, second time to install the ROM.

Thank you.. thank you for giving your precious time . here is the thingy, my stock GB Rom is not giving me trouble at all(Theoretically), previous ICS Rom wasn't good at all.. few features and apps kept on Force closing (hate that the most) and became laggy. so i've decided to stay with Stock Rom for a while Want to ask you one more thing, My Previous Phone (Q mobile a local made) entertained me with a download speed of upto 400KBPS over wifi .. (Yes my internet is slow..just 2 Mb connection) but this cappy downloads @ no more than 100KBPS (Most of the time only 50kbps and often freezes) there is nothing wrong with my internet connection as i get same old speed on my laptop as i used to
can you please explain to me why is this and what could be the Remedy ? Downloading is such a pain in the a** with cappy.
I hope you can understand my lame kind of English

That's most likely cause your Wifi drivers are outdated on the cappy. Flashing a kernel could help towards that. For stock GB, you can use Corn kernel, which can be flashed with Odin.

2Mbps connection = about 200-220KBps download speed. Can't get 400KBps on this connection. Something is wrong with your numbers. I've never measured my Captivate's WiFi speed, but it's pretty good, no complaints. My internet line is 6Mbps or about 600-640KBps download speed. Apps few MB in size download and update for seconds (CM10.1.3, Semaphore 3.0.0c kernel).

when i download movies etc on my laptop with bit torrent it gives me speed of upto 300kbps... mostly 262kbps. and my old phone really downloaded apps in a flash, but this one takes few minutes even to download a 10 12 Mb app i have tried corn kernal as suggested by someone here. and luckily this time i don't get any problem flashing this kernel, but i don't see much of a difference in downloading speed

Corn Kernel will make your phone run smoother in general on GB. Also, it's needed if you wanna flash up to JB.
That being said, I was taking a shot in the dark. Flashing GB kernel gave you newer Wifi drivers (not the newest) but as Val D. mentioned, I highly doubt you'll reach 400kbps with a 2mb connection.

hmmm my that phone used to cover one MB download in 3 JUMPs, it got to be over 300kb per JUMP to cover Download 1MB in 3 Jumps
Anyways one last question i wanna ask from you and Val D . if i create a BACKUP of my current rom using CW recovery and then i WIPE DATA in order to flash any Rom, will my back up would still be there after wiping? i mean if i want to come back to my stock rom (backed up rom in this case) will i be able to do that by just RECOVERING through CW Recovery?

It should be fine as long as you don't wipe your SD card (internal memory). I haven't used cwm in a while (now using TWRP) so I'm not 100% sure about the terminology they use.
Note that if you go up to ICS or JB, you'll have to flash KK4 without bootloaders before restoring your GB backup. Otherwise you'll soft brick your phone (it is recoverable).

Yes, all your CWM backups, music, videos, etc. will stay. Just remember that every CWM backup is for a specific Android version. You can't restore GB backup over JB partitions, nor JB backup over GB partitions.

ROM stable enough, but not updated for months and most likely won't be updated. Dev mentioned he is working on other 4.3 projects now. There is one more ported Xperia themed ROM in Development, see which one you like better.

[Q] Absolute 'super clean' install - a little help needed...

Anyone done an 'absolute' clean install...? A bit of help needed...
After flashing about 9 different roms over the past 12 months, I would like to achieve a TOTAL wipe of my phone and an install of stock or custom - I have a feeling something is not right in the system image part of the phone... I have used Darky 9.5, 10.2 F, EE, RE, Cericko lite, F1, Ficeko JVH base, Galaxian, dark core, etc etc.
But still i cant get the perfect situation - either bluetooth in car goes (touch handset for nissan) or process.phone FC's.Flashed stock JVR today and still phone FC's after using bluetooth.
I have flashed previously both by CWM and Odin, and you may just say that re-partition in Odin does what i want (wipes system image) but I am not sure - what about the bootloader files etc? Can the internal system image become corrupted? (especially if done ext4/rfs conversions on and off?)
To be fair, the only time it was 'perfect' was on froyo 2.2 BEFORE the .1 update - ever since there has been these niggling issues...
If anyone has got any great ideas please pass them on!! Thanks!!
grab yourself a stock froyo ROM, flash it with all 3 files and 512 pit
boot onto recovery and do a factory reset, wipe cache / dalvick cache then go into mounts and storage (CWM needed) and format cache again, data, and datadata.
format internal and external sd card.
completely clean !!
i'd have to have froyo bootloaders no? And then, flash chainfire cfroot to get cwm? Cann i then upgrade to gb 2.3.4 and believe my system is clean? Thanks so much for the, tips!

What ROM are you on now ? if you are already on a GB ROM then do the whole procedure with a 2.3.4 firmware, Save the hassle of all that flashing.
If you are on froyo now, you dont need to mess with bootloaders unless you upgrade to GB which states you need them..
hope that makes sense
yes sorry, should have stated am on XXJVQ already and changed yesterday to sensation 2.1 as i was getting probs with all others. This is at least stable after 36 hours so hopefully a working solution - but,if ihave to do superclean i wanted to know how to do. THANKS!!
EDIT - whoops - spoke to soon. Also loss of touch in car Bluetooth with this rom! Have now frozen with TB all BT settings - print/share/opp/bluetooth services etc etc... recovered in car BT touch for the time being - even without any BT entries running!??? shall monitor and see. This is what the issue has been with ALL 2.3.4, 2.3.3 gb versions/roms. I'm stumped if i know what is causing it!
see edit post, thanks!!
Please note that Sam (author of SURFACE ROM) gives a good guide about how to achieve that in this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=15382251&postcount=2
thats a great post too - i've also downloaded this surface rom in order to try next if the sensation one screws up! Thanks very much!

[Q] Gingerbread??

First off don't shoot me. I am interested in getting Gingerbread on my Captivate or another good rom. I have been on the forum for a few years but have never done amything to my phone until now. I just rooted it and installed Rom Manager and Titanium backup. I have been reading so many threads that my head is spinning. There are alot of different roms available but I have no idea of which to use. Can someone please point me in the right direction to put Gingerbread on my phone? I have had this phone for over a year and am ready for a change without having to buy a new phone. I have never flashed a phone before but I have built my own computer, so I am not a total newbe and am not affraid to try something new.
My phone:
Firmware 2.2
I897UCKB1
Kernel 2.6.32.9
Build Froyo.UCKB1
Rooted

Thanks!
Lol, its cool man....any of the ops in each rom are very detailed in how to flash. Designgears have a great Odin oneclick to stock that's a must have in case something get borked. The Fasty GB roms are my favorite choice. Any of the KH3 roms wont disappoint. Make sure you use the correct bootloaders too. Happy flashing!!

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=7287634 check this out here for back-to-stock info. I would try CM7 since you already have some experience with it. They have allot of info in their thread in the Dev forum. That is what I run and I like it because I didn't have to flash bootloaders and its one of the simplest to install. Is your captivate running stock 2.2?
Sent from my SGH-I897
Not difficult at all:
*download ODIN 1.81 on your pc
*download latest KI2 stock ginger rom from the dev forum
*back up your apps etc using titanium backup to external sd card
*perform factory reset on cappy
*open ODIN and place downloaded .tar file that u downloaded earlier in "PDA" section
*turn off phone and hold vol up&down while turning on to start download mode
*plug phone in usb cable hooked to computer
*say a small prayer, lol
*once connection is established, press start on ODIN
*when flash is completed phone will reset, u may unplug usb cable when u see the ATT screen on phone
*that's it, if your successful then u can perform root, which is done differently than 2.2, so be prepared, I can PM u or respond here to tell u how if your successful with the gingerbread flash.
Good luck, and remember, bootloaders will be flashed, so there is an outside chance to screw your phone, so proceed with caution.
If I use Titanium Backup then don't I need to be rooted in order to restore my apps and contacts?

Duh! Read the OP stupid! (Schizophrenic humor) Ok. Remember CM7 might not have the best battery life but I have always seen it as the least risky way to get GB running on the Captivate because you're not flashing bootloaders that are different from what you already have with stock 2.2 . The ONLY time I ever hard bricked was when attempting to flash GB bootloaders over Froyo bootloaders. Just be careful.

I would be using Titanium to backup my contacts unless there is a better way. I have several groups in my contacts for work and personal ring tones for different groups. It would be a major pain to have to set them up again.

What I have always done is to export my contacts to the external sd card by using "import/export" function in the contacts app, not sure if it would have a impact on all of your settings though because I have always used a simple setup, single ringtone for everyone in my contacts. Just be prepared in case something doesn't work as expected. I have no experience with using titanium to backup the contacts.

Exporting the contacts is not an option since it will take a contact with multiple numbers and turn them into an indvidual one for each number. I have used AndroidSync Wifi to backup contacts and it seems to work pretty good. I have never used Titanium before so I am not sure how well it works with contacts.
The easiest way to back up your contacts is to save them to google. Lol. +1 on the KI2 rom, Flashed it a few days ago and it's amazing... I'm no longer tempted to cash in 80 hours of PTO to get the Galaxy SII tomorrow.

Do you know which thread has the current information on KI2? There are a lot of different threads. Thanks!
Never mind. This is getting to confusing. Some say you need a kernel and some don't. Then there is the Flash clockworkmod Recovery. Is this the same thing that is in Rom Manager? Do I get the full version of Rom manager and flash with that? Do you use Odin? Do you flash to stock? I am already running 2.2 rooted.Threads are 500-1000 pages long, some have old information, ect.............where is the most current updated information????? CM7 nightly builds?? Do you flash everyday? Is there a stable build? Ect.........

download link is in there, just stick the file in the pda slot in odin, put phone into download mode, and flash away... everything you need is in that file (bootloaders, kernel, etc).. it's the stock at&t leak, so it also has bloatware, but oh well.

I still have not flashed. Have been reading threads for hours and hours. So much information and so many Roms Here is what I would like, swipe, get all my contacts back in groups (important for work)and a good stable rom. Seems like each rom has its issues, GPS, download ability, speed of download, some media files not working, poor call quality, not getting text messages, ect......... I know that the developers don't like to recommend roms but with all the different roms and some threads being close to 1000 pages long, it is hard to tell what is considered stable and what is an alpha or beta and what is current. The information on my phone is below. Any help or suggestions to a few good roms with complete instructions would be appreciated. Is rom manager even an option for flashing?
I would understand if the mods close this thread but I am sure that I am not the only one overwhelmed by all this information. It is pretty amazing how many people contribute to the development of all the different Roms.
Thanks again for any help or guidance!

[Q] another which rom thread

hello
im on 2.3.6 now and fancy a change because when i click phone or messages it keeps closing and its starting to do my head in.
which rom should i go for?
could you guys point me in the direction of a good guide were i can flash with odin.
iv flashed both my phones a few times but im still a noob
thanks guys/girls
CyanogenMod (7) was fairly simple to flash and it was my first rom on the phone. I'm currently on Team ICSSGS' rom -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1398223
The latest release was pulled pending wifi fixes, but I'm using it and it's working great for me.
Just need to be rooted and running CWM to flash it.
was looking at that before
ill wait till they fix it and put it back up
how do i flash it.
i dont have a clue i only know how to use odin. and to be honest i think my 3 year old son could work it lol
does anyone know a good rom that i can flash with odin no messingvaround that looks something like this one
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1460786&highlight=2+3+6
just looking for something a little different but stalble as well
I think for the majority of the roms now you need to be rooted and have CWM installed. CM7 is a very nice rom, and not hard to install. It runs 2.3.7 iirc, and worked great for me.
Wiki for installing:
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S:_Full_Update_Guide
i flashed my phone with another rom but didnt like it so i flashed it back to the value pack 2.3.6 jvu and then rooted it with this http://www.androidauthority.com/root-galaxy-s-gt-i9000-android-2-3-6-xxjvu-48441/
but i cant uninstall all the stock apps with super manager app. last time i flashed it i could do it. but didnt use that guild and cant find it now.
so as its not rooted i cant flash with the one you have mentioned
is jvz better?
I never ran 2.3.6, I went right from a stock update at 2.3.1 (iirc) to the 2.3.7 in CM7. You should just install CWM using Odin, do a full backup using Titanium Backup and a Nandroid backup in CWM. Then flash anything you want to try.
Also, for backing up contacts, I've read not to use Titanium, use an SMS/Contacts Backup... Titanium has worked for me though.
Not bothered about backing my stuff up. only need my contacts there on kies
might try a flash with clocks recovery when i get home.
i like the rom im on but i doont have full root access as i cant delete atock apps like i could before. i need to delete them to change file format to exr4. says i dont have room if i don't delete them
I all ready have cwm so do.i.just download the cm7 zip file and extract it on my internal memory card then reboot into cwm and flash
Oops double post
Flashed it but it runs really really skow looks good tho.
search continues ha ha
Kies still connects to your phone with custom roms and such? I was lucky if it worked with the stock firmwares.
Did you do a full data wipe? CM7 ran pretty quick on my phone. Maybe try SetCPU to speed things up a little.
Titanium with root access can remove stock apps too.
ye i did a full wipe.
i tried clocking it to 1200 and still ran slow.
ICS ran a little slow as well.
flashed a few now with cwm getting quite addictive.
would like to try a few more but mega uploads comes up with some security thing saying its been removed blah blah blah
MegaUpload was shut down a little while ago now. Should be lots of Roms listed in the forums here, with active downloads I would hope.

[Q] Stuck in bootloop - What should I do?

Good evening guys!
So I'm stuck in a bootloop, and it doesn't look that I will come out of it. I'm running ROCKET ROM V22, and the Abyss3.9 kernel.
So what do you recomend me to do?
I'll now over the night keep my phone on, to try to get out of the bootloop. But I would need som advice what I shall do.
The problem is that the phone won't mount as a storage device in the computer. And I have no backup in my phone, only on the computer, so I can't restore it easy.
Help me! *said with panic on my voice*
Best regards MinnesotaVikings1961
Hi there,
Bootloops happen every now and then, if something collides or is misconfigured.
In my very own experience most boot loops happen to be script related.
This is why you should´t worry too much.
You still can enter CWM?
If so enter CWM and wipe completely (factory, cache, dalvik) and after that (NO REBOOT!!!) just reflash the ROM which just didn´t happen to work properly.
If it still is in boot loop there might be something wrong with the ROM.
> Rom is guarantied completet? No broken Download?
> Rom is really for the exact telephone model you got? (Galaxy S for example has several submodels which slightly differ from original)
In case you do not have a rooted device without CWM only thing you can do, is to begin from scratch by flashing an official ROM from Samsung via odin.
With that you should flash a kernel with CWM next time, cause it much easier to recover your device including you´ll keep all your private stuff.
Flashing the Samsung-Rom via odin will kill anything saved but the external SD.
hope this helps

Bootloops happen every now and then, is somethine collides or is misconfigured.
In my very own experience most boot loops happen to be skript related.
This is why you should´t worry too much.
You still can enter CWM?
If so Enter CWM, wipe completely (factory, cache, dalvik) and after that (NO REBOOT!!!) just reflash the ROM which just didn´t happen to work properly.
If ist still is in bootloop there might be something wrong with the ROM.
> Rom is guarantied completet? No broken Download?
> Rom is really for the exact telephone model you got? (Galaxy S for example has several submodel which slightly differ from originall)
In case do not have a rooted device without CWM only thing you can do, is to begin from scrath by flashing an official ROM from Samsung via odin.
With that you should flash a kernel with CWM next time, cause it much easier to recover your device incl. you keep all your private stuff.
Flashing the Sasmung-Rom via odin will kill anything saved but the external SD.
hope this helps

Have done as you said, but still problems.
One of the problems maybe can be that it isn't CWM but RedPill.
Yes, I did download the whole file, so no strange abort of the download.
And this is the correct ROM for the Galaxy Note.
If I still have this problems in 24 hours I will contact my store and let them know what I think. I want my money back. I can also add that I'm studying law, so I let the lawbook speek for itself.
But thanks for a fast answer!
Well sad to hear that. Laws have to be different from those in germany
You´re obviously trying to flash inofficial stuff on your own. There is no way the shop could be made resposible for.
So take my advice and reflash official ROM before you return the device.
That will help enormously.
But before runnign too fast, try to give some more information to us here:
What ROM are you trying to flash?
What ROM is installed before trying to flash?
What Kernel is used to flash?
Are you using mobile Odin?
Try to answer questiones I just dind´t think of

The laws are maybe a little bit diffrent. For example, the first 6 months, the seller or shop needs to prove that the product was working when the sold it. Something that they have very hard to prove.
I'm trying to install the ROCKET ROM V22 for SGN.
I had the MidNote V2.0
The Abyss3.9 kernel (I think that it's the correct way of spelling it).
No, I'm not using mobile Odin.
Edit: Can I install a stocket ROM, with my phone in bootloop, and non mountin as a drive in the computer?

Good evening guys!
So I'm stuck in a bootloop, and it doesn't look that I will come out of it. I'm running ROCKET ROM V22, and the Abyss3.9 kernel.
So what do you recomend me to do?
I'll now over the night keep my phone on, to try to get out of the bootloop. But I would need som advice what I shall do.
The problem is that the phone won't mount as a storage device in the computer. And I have no backup in my phone, only on the computer, so I can't restore it easy.
Help me! *said with panic on my voice*
Best regards MinnesotaVikings1961

Quick google search shows boot loops are pretty well known with this rom.
No you only can flash original rom with odin.
If there are important data on the device connect it cia usb and boot into cwm.
Now wath what happens. If you´re lucky mass storage mode is enables in the kernel and you got your storage mounted automated.
If not it´s time to cross fingers and search for an option to mount by hand.
I´m completely new to NOTE - all my knowledge comes from my i9000 which is a mega active community compared to the one of the NOTE
There is have the choice between 5 different ICS kernels alone
Each one has it´s abilities, so does one have the option to mount storage by hand.
This option can be found in "advanced". Hope this menu option is present in your rom
good luck!

Yeah you can. Just go to this thread. Get a rootable rom downloaded. Just follow the instructions to the word of how to flash via odin. And you will have stock rom. And you can again root and install custom rom!! No need to run back to store !

Midnote 2, as in ICS Midnote? You couldn't have been on AbyssNote 3.9, because it's a gingerbread kernel.
Perhaps it was Angelom's stock ICS rooted kernel?
Or did you flash AbyssNote 3.9 from Recovery, trying to go back to GB?

Well, I had been using ICS MidNote for a short time, due to a friend mine wanted to see ICS for the Note.
Now I tried to get back to my regular GB ROM.

You have me utterly confused here...What is the latest rom you were on before this bootloop? Midnote 2 or RR 22?
If Midnote 2 (ICS) with Angelom's kernel, and you did a factory reset at some point, there's hardly anything you can do except take your phone to Samsung service. If you had CF--Root ICS kernel, then try to follow this little set of instructions:

Sorry for being confusing you!
Before this bootloop I was running MidNote V2.0, ICS. I then tried to flash ROCKET ROM, V22. And when I started up, this bootloop came up, and isn't solved in writing moment, very many hours later.

Case closed
I can now say that the case is closed. What I did is very simple. In fact, so simple I never thinked about it. The only thing I did was to unroot my phone using Odin.
But thanks for all tips and support!

Flashing ROM's with mobile odin, what am I in for ?

I've read up several threads on this an I think what I want to do is a bit unique but I am not completely sure. I rooted my phone with Odin a week ago going from official gingerbread and used the stock Kernel. Root went off without a hitch but wasn't able to get into CWM recovery so I did some searching and just now flashed to the Corn Kernel 7.05. Works Perfect !
I want to now use mobile Odin to try out a few new roms as I can upgrade my phone now but want to give this a shot to breath some new life into my nearly 2 year old cappy. Flashing the kernel with mobile odin was s snap but I guess after reading the how and developers page I am lost on what types of ROM's I use with it. I'm new to all of this so judging stages of stability if not something I am sure about. I want some I wont have to compromise much with but will broaden my horizons some. I am so new cyanogen and maybe doc's ICS mod are the only ones I really know about but I don't know if those work with Odin or if I need to use CMW.
So final questions are these:
- Mod that will be stable and I can flash using only mobile odin or CMW (not using a PC) ?
- Does creating a backup of the ROM in CMW allow me to fix a bad ROM flash ?
- Is there an ICS build for cappy that will work for my situation ?
Thanks again ! ( I promise I used the search function and even the mobile odin thread but couldn't find what I was looking for)
1. Mod that will be stable and I can flash using only mobile odin or CMW (not using a PC) ?
2. Does creating a backup of the ROM in CMW allow me to fix a bad ROM flash ?
3. Is there an ICS build for cappy that will work for my situation ?

1. You can basically flash almost anything that isn't stock through CWM; you don't really need mobile odin too much. There are a lot of things considered "stable" that may not be stable for you. I considered alpha CM9 "stable," but others may disagree. It is up to you to find a ROM that suits you the best.
Keep in mind, you can only use Mobile Odin on Samsung-based BML ROMs.
2. To fix a "bad" ROM flash, you'd probably just flash the ROM again. But you can use the backup to restore your phone to its exact state at time of backup (with few exceptions).
3. What exactly is your situation? No matter what, I recommend CM9 nightlies but there certainly are other things out there to try that could work for you. Everything is CWM flashable, no Odin.
Just wondering, why can't you use a computer at all? You may need one in case you screw something up down the road.

1. Thank for clearing that up. I was using mobile odin at first because I wasn't able to boot into recovery with CWM but with the corn kernel that fixed everything and I've been getting myself more accustomed to working in there. Mobile odin seemed good for me to flash the new kernel easily and care free.
2. I was worried about a bad flash because I've read that using nandroid backups can be iffy (That's what CWM uses from what I have seen). Should I trust these backups ? I backed up everything in TiBu. I looked at the Wiki for cyanogen mod and it seems odd that the steps to flash the ROM's in CWM are very few so having few steps makes me think they have left something out or there is a step that is somehow understood I am missing)
3. I live in the boonies and my internet is even slower even though it's *cringe* 1.5 DSL haha. As far as my situation I mean something that would allow me to mess around with my phone some while knowing its stable because with 3 kids and having to have my phone I didn't want to be out of pocket for an extended period of time. I've been reading that ICS requires you to go back to stock to flash another ICS ROM but in my mind that doesn't seem too inconvenient.
I come from the desktop world and work well with hardware, not so much with software knowledge so trying to teach myself some new stuff since mobile seems to be here to stay. Making just a rudimentary app is a goal of mine even if no one cares so starting at the beginning trying to learn. Don't want to be one of those guys the noob video is made for who just begs for the way to root a phone and never contributes haha.
Thanks for your help !
