Moto Makr still shipping pre-camera update devices? - Moto X Q&A

On Thursday of last week, I purchased a Moto X through Moto Makr. I received the device on Saturday good: That's fast!) and noted that out of the box, the unit was prompting for the camera update. I didn't do it as I had intended to root it. After about an hour or two I decided I wanted to take advantage of the return for a new color combo policy. So I did. That phone has yet to ship (should ship today as it is "now being built"), but I am wondering what the odds are that I will get a phone that is still able to be rooted again? Anyone have any recent experience?
Thanks!

Alright, well I'm mainly just posting this here for others to search for. As of an order placed Tuesday, the 22nd of October, Motorola appears to still be sending devices with 139.9.51 through Moto Makr. This means that Motorola is still sending devices that are able to be rooted as they are pre camera update. I am very glad about this and hope this info can help others too.

Should I get the -update1 OTB for recently bought?

Just wonder if someone can tell me: I bought a brand new Nexus One Tmobile a couple days ago. I thought I would get the -update1 (ERE27) right out of the box, but surprisingly I didn't. However, I did receive the OTA update after a couple hours later though. Is it normal, hope it wasn't refurbished?

If it was manufactured and packed prior to the ERE27 release then I can't see any reason they'd unbox and reflash every device. I'd imagine they will ship and receive the OTA like any other phone manufactured during that time period. I don't think this is any indication it is a refurb.

no lollipop for me?

Hi, I just bought a moto x 2014 in Brazil (not locked to any carriers), and went to update, but it says no updates are available. I read everywhere that lollipop has been out for moto x 2nd gen for a while now. am I missing something? thanks

Not all variants of the Moto X 2014 have received Lollipop update. For instance, my XT1093 has not gotten it yet. XT1095 (pure edition) and maybe some others have gotten the update already.
You'll get it, just wait till it rolls out to you. You aren't missing out on much, believe me.

well actually android lollipop is the thing i need the most in a smartphone. multi-user is the reason I bought this phone right now, I have a band and I use instagram / twitter / facebook / all things that doesn't have multi-user support like google apps, so the only way I can manage everything is with android lollipop.
I had a galaxy s4 with cyanogen lollipop, but phone just fried so I went to the store and bought the best phone I could pay that had guaranteed lollipop upgrade, and when i got home bam, no upgrade. that's a bummer.

All I can say is you'll get it soon, so sit tight.
I was actually expecting a way to force upgrade since it's been out for a while, and I'm not very patient, not good with waiting for something that has not a defined time to get done you know? been waiting forever to get it on my s4, and it never came, had to do a manual install. My phones don't usually last longer than a year or two, so I can't afford to wait another six months for it unfortunately

It won't be six months. You're looking at a few weeks, max. You could look into side loading or flashing a ROM, though I'm not sure what is compatible with your model and what isn't.
I found an OTA download wich supposedly would force update my phone to download the official release, let's give it a shot

I think you're misinterpreting what you found. If it's the actual OTA zip, the file itself will update your phone to the official release... that's called sideloading. Nothing can force your phone to download the OTA if it's not already available. That's entirely up to Motorola or your carrier. And if it is available, you'd be able to get it by checking for it in settings. Post the link to what you found and I'll check it out.
I personally have no issues with it, never encountered the memory leak issue. I was a bit peeved at first they removed the silent mode but once I worked out how to use the priorities for alerts I was fine. Now I just wish they'd roll out lollipop for my Samsung Tab S.

Is there any hope?

I just received a replacement device today, unfortunately it's already on lollipop. Coming from a turbo rooted with mofo I feel crippled. Is there any hope in the near future of an unlock or a new mofo release? Can't seem to find much info that's not older than a month.
No recent word. You're just going to have to wait or find someone to trade the device with...

Only need free tethering

So I just got my second replacement device. The first was acting goofy. I just dropped the second one and cracked the screen...thank god for the one time free screen fix...which is actually just a replacement device mailed to you. The current (cracked screen one) is modded. I have been finding my device doing random reboots or getting laggy.
So on to my question. Which ROM is as factory as possibly but free tethering enabled?
And your replacement has 4.4.4 and you are rooted?
Ugh...I hadn't even turned it on...it's got 5.1. My last replacement device didn't so I'd completely forgotten about that. As far as I know, I'm completely stuck and cannot root this, correct? Think there is any hope of Verizon getting me one without 5.1?

Correct. I've read reports of people getting 5.1 replacements from Verizon as well. Jcase and beaups are supposedly working on updating Sunshine (bootloader unlocker) to support the Turbo, but there hasn't been any news on that in a while. Also, Sunshine needs root access to work, so it wouldn't work on 5.1 unless they also released a new root method. That's the current state of things as far as I know.
Yeah, people who jumped immediately and got replacements when 5.1 first came out in July (finally!) for the XT1254 could get 4.4.4 still on replacement Droid Turbos. But now by mid September... Seems like Verizon has caught up.
That's why I asked if your new replacement XT1254 shipped to you actually still had 4.4.4 (instead of stock 5.1) and you could flash another ROM.
There still may be 4.4.4 Droid Turbo phones out there in Verizon stores with older inventory. But those phones would be given to people who walk in and buy a new phone -- not to customers ordering a replacement phone, which are shipped from Verizon.
And those new phone buyers may not even realize what they have in their hands. First thing they would do is hit the update button.
All that being said though, if you ever get a hold of a 4.4.4 Turbo, I'll send a stock + root + tethering rom your way.
So wait... there's a huge debate in threads talking about being apart of the soak test or even mentioning it exists.. which one side is boiled down to "breaking the manufacturer rules..." but you can literally post a topic about breaking a carrier's rules and i'ts all good? The world is a confusing, confusing place.
FYI, I got a 4.4.4 replacement device yesterday straight from Motorola. Might be worth a shot if you ever need another replacement. My Verizon one also had 5.1. Kind of funny that the manufacturer had the old firmware and Verizon had the latest. I figured Verizon would do everything in their power to revert it to Gingerbread or something

There was that debate here which was hilariously ridiculous, when the head of Motorola software even mentioned the 5.1 soak tests in his blog. Some guy who claims to be a rep for Motorola -- named Moto Mark or something -- was laughed away after that. Basically his boss can shout it from the rooftops to the world, but users can't? Ha.

Pixel 4 XL repair headaches

Purchase UNLOCKED Pixel 4 XL 128GB Black from Best Buy on release day.
About 2 weeks ago I noticed that the microphone wasn't working in headset mode. It would work in speakerphone, however, it still sounded garbled.
Had it repaired at uBreakiFix and they replaced all of the microphones. This still didn't fix the issue. uBreakiFix isn't allowed to replace mainboards so I had to send it in to Google. Google refused to do an advanced exchange since it wasn't purchased from the Google Store leaving me without a device for a number of days.
Fast forward to today when I receive the phone. I immediately notice that the text and display size are very small. Sure enough when I go into Settings -> About -> Phone & hardware it says Pixel 4. OEM unlocking is now grayed out in developer options as well. Good news is that they fixed the microphone issues.
When in recovery I see:
google/flame/flame
When going into the bootloader I see:
Product revision: coral MP1.0(NA)
I guess my only option at this point is to send it back once again and pray.

I read your post a couple of times and some things are not made clear. Did you or did you not get an XL back? Easy to just say definitively because of the phone dimensions. Which carrier are you activated on? If you had an unlocked phone from day one (receipt for unlocked), that is what Google should have sent you. Their bad. Get on the line with Google. Since they sent you the phone, they owe you a resolution. If they either sent you a 4, or a carrier locked 4XL, then THEY should now cross-ship you a new phone. Just remember always being polite, but very persistent with Google support will usually get you sorted. Good luck.

Thanks for following up and sorry I wasn't a bit more clear on the initial post.
I received an XL back (my phone to be exact - has a small mark that I remember). Same IMEI, etc. It was repaired by a 3rd party company (Cynergy).
I am on Verizon.
I do have a receipt for unlocked thankfully.
On the phone with them now. Great suggestion as I only did chat before.

Just curious how many days it took to get your phone back from Google?
I also purchased from best buy.. Worried about having to go through mail in repairs
OH and also, were you on the hook for shipping fees?

Repair requested 12/7/19 (Saturday)
Mail in Kit shipped 12/9/19
Mail in kit arrived 12/10/19
Sent phone out 12/11/19
Received by Cynergy 12/12/19
Shipped back on 12/13/19
Received 12/16/19
All in all it was very fast. The weekend got me twice with regard to receiving the package to send back the phone (they insure it). The 2nd time was that I didn't send the phone in the same day that I received the return kit. The speed was great for a standard exchange situation.

Did Cynergy fix the issue you were having? Hopefully they didn't scratch or ding up your phone. Every time I've gotten a refurb replacement from them it's always had lots of scratches on the screen.

So I initially went to uBreakiFix to try to repair. They replaced the mics, however, couldn't replace the main board. That didn't work.
Cynergy fixed the mic problems I was having but flashed the phone with a Pixel 4 image and the bootloader was locked. This is despite the device being a Pixel 4 XL. Phone was in the same condition as when I sent it in.
After lots of bickering and reaching out to contacts I was able to get Google to replace the device due to the multiple issues.
