updating twrp? - Galaxy S III I9305 (4G LTE + 2GB RAM) Q&A, Help &

First off I'd like to apologise if this is the wrong forum.
I'm using an old version of twrp on my i9305, 2.3.3.0 to be exact, and I would like to update it to the newest version but I'm not sure how. I've looked on their website and just found it confusing; goomanager isnt supported, it couldn't find the file when I tried using terminal emulator and I couldn't get a response from odin for some reason.
So what's the easiest way to update it for a newb like me to update it?
I believe I used the s3 toolkit last time but I'm not sure which phone to select because I'm using sentinalrom and all the options seemed to be for stock phones. No option for 4.3 phones.

Web site downloads and either cwm zip or Odin tar file .

Sorry for the stupid question but I've downloaded the cwm zip and was wondering whether I have to install cwm or can I flash it using twrp?

I've read the FAQs and can't find anything relating to this. Hence the reason I asked.
Thanks for the useful post though.

The basics would show that cwm is a recovery and twrp is a recovery . You flash through recovery .
So you have more than one copy of your EFS folder backed up good .

But it's realy easy to DL latest twrp tar image from official site.
Install mobile odin and flash it from there.

OK that is one solution.
But I don't have "mobile Odin"...
how can I convert the TWRP IMG or TAR into a flashable ZIP?
Or can anyone confirm what the correct ADB command is? (I don't think the command from TWRP is correct)
thanks

Here you can find a download for twrp.. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=46874790
It is attached in the 3rd post.

I wish it was this easy. Every time I try using mobile Odin it crashes, says settings stopped and boots into TWRP... I presume this isn't meant to happen at least?
I think I'll just have to give up. I've tried everything and nothing works for me.

I decided to give it one last try with Odin on my pc and I dont know why but it worked!!! I have no idea why it didn't before, perhaps it was a corrupted file but that doesn't explain why none of the other ways worked either. But the main thing is I'm now running the latest version.
Thanks for all your help everyone.

I needn't have bothered tbh. The only reason I wanted to update the recovery was because most roms wont install on my phone, which is the main reason I'm using sentinelrom, and I had hoped it was because I was using an old recovery but they still wont install.
This phone really is crap. I didn't have any of these troubles with my old x10. It might not have had the power of the s3 but I could flash things at least.

there are two kind of files you can download from the goo
the img file and zip file
the img file is for download mode and the zip file is for recovery mode
you can use mobile ordin or ordin in PC to flash the img fileļ¼Œor use the old version TWRP to flash the new version in recovery mode

Flashify is another way to update TWRP after downloading the recovery .img manually on your phone. Just be sure to install the right one for your device.
Apologies for the reply to a thread that's been dormant for a month.

"Couldn't Open Directory" When Attempting to Restore a Backup

I made a backup of my ROM and flashed a new ROM, however, I want to go back.
When I attempt to hit "restore" in Nandroid backup, it says "Couldn't open directory" "No files found."
I'm running ClockworkMod Recovery V6.0.1.0. I also are unable to flash any ROM, or access my files (they won't mount.) I think I may be screwed,
My SD card also has a weird glitch, something about a folder named "1". In that folder I can find my backups under the clockworkmod folder.
Does anybody know how to fix this?
Thank you
Sounds like you flashed a 4.2 ROM and then it created the multiple profiles folder. I think other people have had this problem, try searching for the /0 folder problem on google and xda and see if they can help you better than I.

If you can boot into a ROM, then download goomanager app and give it root permissions. Then open the menu and select install openscriptrecovery and it will install the latest TWRP. However, if you prefer the latest CWM, then you'll have to download it from the CWM thread and then flash it through fastboot.

[Recovery] CWM 6.0.3.1 Odin Flashable GT-P7510 Wifi

I thought I would share that I was able to convert the .img file to a odin flash-able .tar.md5 file. Was not sure if anyone has posted it before and noticed that there was confusion in regards to the available files being in a img format. This is the CWM 6.0.3.1 "touch" file.
I have installed the touch recovery version on my Tab10.1 wifi and it works fine. Please follow the link for those who wish to use it.

Not quite sure whats up with dropbox at the moment. Send me a PM and can send you the file.
Edit: Changed the link. Can you try again and let me know
After installing 6.0.3.1, recovery seems to work well but there seems to be a problem with CM Updater try to install updates automatically. Download updated file works if done manually. If done automatically I get an error "getprop("ro.product.device" == "p4wifi"" ; "E:error in /sdcard/0/cmupdater/cm-10.1- xxxxxxxx-nightly-p4wifi.zip"
Would anyone with more experience be able to chime in on why?
Edit: Installed ROM Manager and chose install recovery and now recovery is at 6.0.3.1 (but not touch version) Please do not use my touch version till I find out what went wrong.
Here my flashable zips of both devices. Flash through recovery. ist the touchbased version. Works both, ive testet it. Tehy are attached, but im not shure if CM10.1 or other stuff will work with it. Cant test it at the moment.
But mate, i think this is no development.

You can also get it from the source: http://www.clockworkmod.com/rommanager and even flash with Mobile Odin. Download the touch / nontouch version for your device and rename it to "recovery.img" and put it in the root of your internal memory. This way Mobile Odin recognizes the file and you can flash it.
Could someone please post up the .tar? I think mobile odin broke the install so now my tablet is not going past the first galaxy tab screen. I don't know how to make the tar file myself and yes the top link is broken.
EDIT: Scratch this request was able to go to an older CWM and then successfully flashed 6.0.3.1

[TWRP][RECOVERY] ODIN .TAR (2.7.1.0) for I9505G GE Galaxy S IV

Hey Everyone the folks over at TEAM WIN RECOVERY PROJECT put together an image file for TWRP recovery for the I9505G. I take NO CREDIT for this but I did convert the image into an ODIN flashable .TAR file because an ODIN tar was not available on TWRP website. I have tested and flashed this on my Locked Bootloader and Stock Google Edition Galaxy S IV running 4.2.2. Please make sure you Unlock the Bootloader if you want to Root your phone, the Root will not work if you try to install it from Recovery on reboot.
As Always I am not responsible if you brick your phone doing any modification
HOW TO INSTALL
Open up ODIN and click on PDA
Select Recovery.tar from the attachment you downloaded
Make sure ONLY "AUTO REBOOT" is checked
Click START
After you see the PASS on Odin and "Removed" Unplug
Power Off or Pull the battery
Use Volume Up and the Power till you see the SAMSUNG logo and let go of all. Wait for TWRP to boot, it took a little longer so your not stuck, just be patient.

UPDATED TWRP IMAGES AND .TAR ODIN FILES http://techerrata.com/browse/twrp2/jgedlte
-----------------------------------------
KNOWN ISSUES For 2.6.0.0 & 2.6.1.0: 8/31/2023 ( post any help info on further releases ) UPDATE 7/21/2014 I have not been using the I9505G for awhile now so I am not sure of any issues or bugs on the latest releases please post them in the thread.
I have used TWRP from the Team Win site and the Odin package image I put together here and I have noticed and reported 2 bugs. The first is you can get stuck on TWRP screen booting into recovery, just pull the battery or reflash again until it boots up. The second is that when you restore sometimes you will get a FAIL immediately, don't panic, (1) reflash a ROM, and Restore or (2), pull battery and reboot back into recovery and Restore or (3) wipe and then Restore.
This build has some minor issues but if you follow this guide you will be OK.
Thanks to the Folks at TEAM WIN RECOVERY PROJECT and Chahk
MJ (attached file is for 2.6.0.0) PLEASE DO NOT USE ATTACHED RECOVERY PLEASE USE THE LINK ABOVE FOR OFFICIAL TWRP RECOVERY

I did not try to do a Nandroid this was the image from Team Wins website so I don't think you will have any backup issues like some did with the I9505 image. Goo Manager is always the best option but a .tar comes in handy at times that is the only reason I converted their image.

BTW, did this trip your counter MJ?
Apologies if I am completely wrong - but does this mean that if I use this recovery my phone will be 100% identical to the official S4GE? I assume that would make a lot more stable and efficient than the current dumbs we have been leaked?
Thanks in advance!

From my understanding this is just a TWRP recovery. It's not something that will make your phone a stock S4GE because this is a custom recovery. It's a custom recovery for the S4GE GT-I9505G.

If there is no difference between that .img and the one downloaded from goo.manager, Its freezing under advanced settings. Cant restore defaults. It froze on me trying to do a back up. Im sure there are several other issues as I have not had a chance to review the thread in general section yet, but just a few results from my own experience.
EDIT: I stand corrected, I thought I was getting freezes, I let it sit and it finally completed.

[Q] Installing TWRP over CWM

Hey guys, I was wondering if I can just simply install TWRP over CWM using the tool kit provided by mskip or I'll brick my phone if I do that? Thanks and sorry for my poor english lol
I installed twrp provided by maclaw team over cwm simply by flashing twrp zip in cwm (like you would flash new rom, or gapps) and rebooted recovery. Nothing bricked and had no problems.

I read somewhere, that unfortunately no. However, if something goes really wrong, you still can flash cwm back and then restore. (and if you can't then perhaps flash it through odin?)
Oh well, thanks a lot anyway

when twpr install, reboot and then do a back up with twpr, it is clear that CWM will recognize you as you create a folder TWPR.
I'm now with TWPR

Stop giving people bad information... Of course you can if you have the updater script written to write raw image to your recovery partition.

So, does it work like that, that I can simply open cwm backup file in twrp? Or is this script written by something external? Because that's what OP was asking for I guess.
I wrote this because I read it somewhere in development thread of CM 10.2, if it's false, then I'm guilty of spreading misinformation

No you can't restore a cwm backup in twrp. I thought the OP asked if it's ok to flash twrp recovery while in cwm, to change the recovery. That works fine
Hi guys, I read all the threads about replacing the CWM with the TWRP, everyone seems to agree on the fact that you need to flash the zip file TWRP by entering the CWM, however there is no such thing as a zip file, I checked on the download page
https://dl.twrp.me/golden/
and there are either .tar files or .img files.
Can I just flash the .tar TWRP file using ODIN ?
Does it overwrite the existing CWM ?

eventually I just flashed the CWM using ODIN and everything worked fine, then I realized that I had flashed the official CWM and not the novafusion version, so I again flashed it using ODIN and everything works fine. Now In only have to flash the ROM.

Recovery Corrupted?

Do I went to upgrade my wife's G2 to a newer TWRP version. Instead of smartly doing this by flashing the new zip in twrp, I used JMZ's twrp app to flash the newer version. It said success and thought all was good.
When I return to recovery, it's just a black screen nothing loads. I rebooted and tried again. Same problem. Rebooted and tried flashing CWM through ROM manager. Same result - black recovery screen.
By now I've tried to access fastboot but fastboot doesn't recognize device (although ADB had no problem). I've attempted flashing the IMG file from the official TWRP app and also using the "dd" method on terminal Emulator.
I'm at a complete loss here. My guess is the recovery is corrupted and anything short of using KDZ or TOT method to return to stock and re-root is going to just keep frustrating me.
Thoughts?

yeah those twrp apps are more trouble than they are worth on the G2 at least.
I think there was a lollipop version of autorec floating around might have to google it
or you could try and pull the recovery.img out of one of blastgators zips and flash with dd then flash the zip in twrp
I dont understand one thing, can you boot the phone? It can turn on normally? Anyway about the recovery, have you tried with AutoRec.apk? Google for it and it should install some old version of TWRP then go and find 3.0xx bumped TWRP which is recommended in most of roms and flash it through the old one, after that reboot recovery and youll have the latest recovery

Yes the phone boots just fine. It's just the recovery that's been blasted. I'm gonna try the autorec you guys mentioned. I'll let you know how it goes.
When you say find a bumped version of TWRP, that is something different than the one on the official site right? Also, the version I found of autorec was the kitkat version. I believe I rooted her phone from Lollipop. Will this cause problems with running autorec? Moreover will it mess up my boot?

So tried autorec for the vs980. Unfortunately it can't find or install the Loki_tool. With that it closes the app. I've tried looking up info on the Loki tool, but I'm not finding anything that is being helpful.
I'm familiar with using the kdz method and might just do that and start fresh. Really wish I hadn't used that stupid twrp app now. I'll take any further suggestions that could save me from restoring stock.

Autorec works , it must. You have SuperSu? Go in supersu settings and uncheck something about 'name spaces' cant remember the whole thing. Then reboot, run autorec again.
I should have probably mentioned I'm on a custom rom already. Don't know if that's part of it.
I'm on RR MM 5.7.4 using built in root manager in the rom.

I should have probably mentioned I'm on a custom rom already. Don't know if that's part of it.
I'm on RR MM 5.7.4 using built in root manager in the rom.

Oooh well thats something else... The only suggestion I can give you is to flash stock kdz (kk or lp) with lg flash tool and from there do what I said above...

Yeah figured as much. I might just leave her on stock honestly. She is a very light user of her phone. I only rooted and did custom recovery because her original software became corrupted and boot looped her.
Thanks for all of the help!

Tot method worked beautifully. Phones stock again on Lollipop - where it will stay.
Never using one of those recovery installing apps again! Nothing like wasting a few hours fixing a mistake.

Arent you in a wrong section then? Which guide you used for unlocking bootloader and flashing twrp? You cant use anything which is written for lg g2
Yeah unfortunately I'm unfamiliar with your phone and the rooting/unlocking process. I'd recommend seeking some assistance within the xolo a 500 forum. Sorry!

I have been unable to find a reliable/working method for installing TWRP on my LG G2 VS9803AA (5.0.2) - It appears AutoRec is no longer supported - and I have read too many horror stories (including the one posted here) about those TWRP installer apps. Can anybody point me in the right direction?
