Yesterday my phone's volume up stopped working so I googled to see if there was a fix. Some had suggested unticking fast start up and rebooting didn't work tried soft reset didn't work then later it just started working. So tried it again tonight and it's not working again, so does anyone else know if it's software or hardware or any suggestions of what to do thanks.

How about you try the built in diagnostics: in dialer type *#*#3424#*#* then select "Button Test" and run it.

I guess if it fails the button press, then it's most likely a hardware fault, and not much you can do to fix it
It should still be under warranty so will take it back next week hopefully they can fix it but dreading handing it over incase it comes back in worse shape then when it went.

If anyone reads this from the UK what's the best way to send phone off for warranty repair through shop where i got it from phones4u or HTC UK or HTC international need some advice before it goes on it's journey for repair. Also time frames of how long it normally takes would be nice. Iam hoping they tell me to send it somewhere locally for repair but doubt it very much, had a Nokia years ago wich went to a local place for repair but don't think they do that now.

I got a note here a few days ago and I noticed that the back and menu button freeze up sometimes. So I just restart the phone and it's good to go. Has anyone else had this issue? I sure hope it's a software issue and not a hardware issue.

Anyone? I don't think it's an app issue because when I got it, it was already reset.

Same here, have happend 3 times in one week. Reboot is the only solution when it happends.
Do you think it's a software issue and ics will fix the issue?

I've had it happen to me once in the past couple of weeks with the stock GB rom. Hopefully it is on Samsung's bugfix list. BTW, does Samsung have a public url to report bugs?
I don't believe that there is, but I could be wrong.

It could be possible that its just a software glitch, have you taken it to the service center and asked them to update the software? I've read reports about those before with the Galaxy S2, some had it fixed with a software update while others got a replacement.
No I haven't because I would have to send it to them and then I would be without a phone. I hope when ics comes out it fixes the issue. If not I'll give them a call.

That actually happened to me twice randomly...
Was checking out some clothing in browser and the back and menu buttons lit up but stopped working =/ got a bit confused to be honest! restart fixed it!
Second time i was playing Fruit Ninja and the same thing happend =/
How i fixed it ? Installed "CheckRom REVO" and "abyssnote" kernel.
Never happend again since then! Dont really know what was the actual problem but this is my only solution! Hope i was helpfull!
I am experiencing an unresponsive keyboard, at the bottom of the screen, after an hard reset. Previously it was working good without problems.
Any idea? does anyone had the same problem?
thanks
Reflash the rom your using. That solved the issue when I had it? Clean install it though.

What if I have the stock rom with S-ON?
Hmmm..... if a factory reset doesn't work. You could always unlock the boot loader and try a custom rom.
Or take it back to HTC etc if you still can ?

The problem is that the phone is not mine but a person found on internet owns the phone and I would buy it, now my question is: should I buy the phone even if it has this problem? the phone has 8 months and is still can send back to HTC.

It is a difficult question to ask. No one can tell what the problem is. It could be hardware or software. If you can get to the shell you can enter the command getevent and capture the output of the touch events. See if it is at least generating any touch events at that portion of the screen. If the tool is capturing any events you confirm that the hardware is working fine at the least.
Just change the kernel gouverneur to something other than powersafe/interactive or conservative and done.

Thank you for the advice, I will try it as soon as it flickers again.
I deleted Ebay and PayPal apps from the phone I installed 2 days ago. And it stopped doing that.
I don't know if it was really those apps fault nor do I know if the problem is solved yet. But I don't see my phone's screen flickering for about 3 hours now.
Some app have option to not die screen or something like that building in to it.

I have talked to HTC customer, they say HTC will fix this in next update.
Is this a widespread issue, happening to everyone?
I noticed when I was restoring apps using Carbon from my Nexus 4, the repeated act of installing an app from the market, then pressing back to return to Carbon, my back button would not respond and I'd have to either wait 15-45 seconds, or turn the screen off and on.
I have since had the back button stop working while using Tapatalk, Blinkfeed etc, any app that causes heavy use of the back key to, well, go back!
I am reluctant to unlock the bootloader and try ROM's based on a newer base if it isn't known to fix the problem, as I don't want any difficulty returning my handset if the fault is hardware. Current ROM is stock 1.28.401.7
Cheers!
I thought this was a hardware fault not a software fault ?

The title explains it all, this just started happening this morning. I even booted into recovery and can see it not it bootloader. There was a couple sense 5.5 roms I flashed before that had this but now its on CM 10.1. And its very annoying I haven't dropped my phone or applied any type of pressure to the screen. Wondering if anyone has solution or any knowledge if why this happens.

I hope you realize that there isn't anything on these screenshots. Most likely your problem is hardware related not software related, that's why it doesn't show up in the screenshots

Oh wow stupid me! Thanks I still see it on phone but not on my computer. I'm try flashing a ROM or running an ruu see if itll fix the problem.

Just a heads up, don't get excited. This is most likely a hardware problem.
Try putting it in the freezer overnight, it has solved many of these issues(not kidding). Just make sure you wrap it with a plastic bag

I decided not to run an ruu. I just held my power button for two minutes. Everything is back to normal.
