ROMs without SD Card? - Nook HD, HD+ Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Guys, I don't have a micro SD card, and I want to change my ROM, the stock one is very very slow.
Is there a way I can do this? All ROMs seem to need a SD card to be installed...
And which ROM do you guys recommend?
Thanks!

Hello,
Unfortunately you cannot install custom ROMs without a microSD card. In other words, you need an SD card, else you cannot install custom ROMs. This is so, as you need to flash your internal storage. You cannot flash your internal storage, when you need to access a file (the ROM) on the internal storage. Sincere apologies about this, but an SD card is required. You can pick them up for cheap from eBay.
I'd recommend you install CyanogenMod 10.1.3 (stable) and NOT CyanogenMod 10.2, as this is nightly and not ready for daily use. CyanogenMod is one of the only perfect stable ROMs. Again, I recommend CyanogenMod (CM) 10.1.3 which is Android 4.2.2. Here is a guide for installation: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2317500
All the best.

Why do I need a card?
First time I've seen this, all other devices work just by putting the ROM on the internal memory and using recovery to flash it!

The Nook is not like some other devices. You MUST use an SD.
The reason is you cannot flash ROMs with the stock recovery that comes with the Nook. You must use a custom CWM on SD.

Why is the Nook Color so different?

I just ordered a Nook Color from eBay with the $50 off... happy yes I am!
I've been with Android since the G1, now I have a droid... how come flashing ROMS and SD cards are so different? You have to put it internally on the Nook instead of on the SD card? Flashing off SD card causes problems? CWR doesn't work? Can anyone explain? It seems much tougher than my droid, just putting the file on my sd card then going to recovery and hitting update, or same with the gTab or Adam.
Unlike most phones, flashing a majority of ROMs (not all) for the NC wipes the Recovery -- ie, wipes it off the device.
So you create a Recovery SD card (the NC auto-boots into it) and then flash ROMs just like you would for a phone. Then take out the SD card when done with Recovery.
It wipes only the recovery correct? Not anything on the sd card? Ill search up how to make partition for recovery sd. Thanks.

Yeah, it'll wipe everything on the NC only, and not touch the SD card.
Here's the thread for creating a 3.0.0.6 Recovery SD Card (needed for CM7 Gingerbread ROM):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=959240
See post #19 for detailed instructions.
For FroYo I believe you need to use 3.0.0.5, found elsewhere.
just ordered my NC off ebay too. i'm reading up all i can as fast as i can. coming from an evo where wiping is too easy, this is going to be a bit more complicated, i can't wait!!!
More complicated, maybe, but also much safer since you basically cannot brick an NC... No matter how badly you screw up the internal flash, you can always boot from SD to fix things.
I bought 3 Nook Colors yesterday and rooted every one of them and installed HoneyComb on one, all in less that 2 hours start to finish including downloading images and making the SD card. I made one SD card with CWR with images for the stock ROM, CyanogenMod 7 and HC eMMC v4. It all works flawlessly. This thing really is simple to manipulate. I had more trouble making a gold card and rooting my HTC Inspire!
Well I want to chime in on this too now because I'm new to this as well. What are the advantages/disadvantages of nookie froyo on the sd card vs flashing a rom to the internal?

well sd cards are slow and internal memory(eemc) is fast
if you install froyo/cm7/HC on your eemc it will run much faster vs running from sd card, running from sd card is good though if you want to try out a rom without losing your current setup

Best rom to boot from SD keeping emmc stock?

I have a nook myself and I run phiremod from emmc, but I have a friend who wants to keep his nook completely stock, but still use android roms via the sd card.
What would I have to do to make it so he could insert the SD card boot the nook and it boots to a froyo or eclair rom, and when he takes the card out and boots the nook it goes back to stock.
The guide to running phiremod from the sd card is beyond me and anything stable and simple will do.
Also, he's running the latest BN firmware on the nook.
This is the best:
[ROM][CM7] Size-agnostic SD Card image and CM7 installer for SD Cards. with updater
This gives you CM7(2.3 Gingerbread) and it self adjusts depending on the Size of the card you use.
It also makes installing GoogleApps and Updating the ROM easy without the need to have a Linux PC or ClockWorkMod. You just put the ROM zip on the "boot" partition(the one that shows up in Windows) and Hold N+Power for 6 seconds when your Nook is off to boot to Recovery and it'll Automatically Update from the zip. It works the same way when installing Gapps.
All in all, the best expirience I've had with SD ROMs.
PS: I'm doing the same thing as your friend. I have Unrooted Stock on EMMC and run CM7 off my 4gb Class 6 SD.

Need help to restore to stock 1.3

I bought a nook color for my 9 year old son as a gift, mainly for him to read more books. After browsed this site, I was able to create a bootable SD of CM7, and then I rooted the NC. Now I am thinking maybe it is not a good idea to give my son a rooted NC because he can load game on it.
I did a factory reset, everything back to stock 1.3, but when I use the bootable SD to try to boot to CM7, always failed, even I made a new CM7 SD, first it will boot to SD and install CM7, but after restart, it always goes to nook stock rom, did something wrong?
Thanks for your help.

Please explain all the steps.....
Sounds like your Nook CM7 "install" SD card is actually a bootable SD card.....
Will CM load with the card in? Is CM not loading only when you take the card out?
If these statements are true, its because CM is actually installed on your SD card and running from there, nothing is actually being installed to your nooks internal memory.

Hi, thanks for your replay. After tried lots of flushing, I finally found what's wrong. Yes, my SD is a bootable, what I like is, most time NC just run stock rom, only books, no games, for my son. When I use it, I can plug in sd card and run CM7, and use it as a regular tablet (poor kid).
I put CM7 install zip and google apps zip on the bootable SD, it flashed the rom and the gapps no problem, but after a reboot, it never be able to boot from SD card again. The problem is, I shouldn't put both zip at the same time, has to be flash CM7 first, then reboot to CWM again to flash gapps.

[Q] Is it possible to install a custom rom (e.g ROCKET ROM) without a SD card?

Sorry for a real n00b question but is it possible to install a custom rom (e.g. ROCKET ROM) on my Galaxy Note without a SD Card?
If it is, can someone please provide me with a link to a how-to/step-by-step explanation?`
Many thanks in advance!!
I think no unless you use Odin software and plug your phone to the computer while in download mode. Although roms for Odin and CWM are in different formats and not compatible with each other.
However, I heard that if you flash third party (non-stock) firmware to your phone using Odin, it will add to the flash counts, which will make your phone lose warranty (if your Note even have warranty when you imported it).
Maybe there is a way to do update through adb, but I do not know.
Also I forgot, you can install rom from internal storage using CWM Manager app.
You can use the phone's internal memory to store the ROM to be flashed. Don't really need to put it on the microSD card. Make sure you are rooted and have clockwork installed.

I'm already rooted and have CWM Manager 3.0 installed.
I also did a backup yesterday (I will do a new backup before flashing), but since the backup is on the internal memory, can I restore to the original stock rom if I don't like the ROCKET ROM for some reason?
Or will the internal memory be wiped clean if I flash the ROCKET ROM to my Galaxy Note?
Many thanks for the help!
That's fine, and you don't need to worry about internal storage being wiped. Your 16GB (or 32GB) shows up in the system as SD card. If you add a physical microSD card that will be listed as external SD. A bit confusing I know, but that 16/32GB is partitioned separately from the phones main memory (~2GB). When you flash a ROM its only the 2GB partition that gets overwritten, nothing happens to your SD card and external SD card memory.

How to make SD card CyanoBoot menu work?

I have Leapinlar's SD card image installed on a SD card that I used to then install the EMMC version onto my HD+ which is working great, thanks to Leapinlar and Verygreen for that. Since I don't want to misplace the SD card I've left it in my Nook, but then whenever I reboot it, it boots off of the SD card and goes into the CWM on the card. I was wondering if anyone knew of a way to activate the Cyanoboot menu on the card so that I could choose to boot from the card, or the EMMC, and possibly change the default so that it boots to the EMMC instead. I realize that this might not be the right forum as it isn't necessarily a Nook question, so thanks for any help.
Edit: I should specify that I used the 4GB CWM SD card image in Leapinlar's thread, and is the one I'd like to modify. Thanks.
Ask and Ye shall receive.
Attached below is a .rar file that has four files in it. Extract those files to the boot partition of your CWM SD, replacing any duplicates. It will add the cyanoboot menu to it. It will by default boot to CWM, but if you want to boot to emmc (stock or CM10.1 on emmc), hold the n key and the cyanoboot menu will come up and you can choose stock. If you want it to boot to emmc by default, just change the Default Boot Device from "CM10/10.1" to "Stock". Then it will boot to emmc if you do nothing. Then you can boot to CWM by using the cyanoboot menu.
You rock, thanks!

I have the Stock BN rom on DS card and have 10.2 on native install.. but an i think as far as installing the dual boot menu i got that right..
but when i try to switch to the Stock BN rom living on the SD card it just says loading SD... but never continues to the BN boot animation.. or loads continues to login... it feels like a boot loop... do i have to have root access to get this to operate... i have 10.2 root but BN SD is not rooted... confused...
i would just like a boot menu to allow the option to boot to the BN SD card or default to native 10.2..
help?

Right thread this time! So this is dual boot thread (sorry about earlier Leapin!).
Took me about five minutes to get where I'd made my mistakes though even after finding this and trying again. Now that I understand how this installs, and that stock must be in emmc, I just have one question....do I place CM 10.1 on the root of my SD card as a zipped, or unzipped, file for it to load from the menu? Or is there still more to do other than just "sticking the file on there?"
I know this much...every day I have greater & greater respect for xda developers. To be willing to explain things so even myself can understand it a little - and put up w questions - has to be a chore in and of itself. Thank you!

First you need to go to verygreen's SD thread and make the early 7.1 CWM card. The put the CM10.1 zip on internal memory using stock. Then boot with the CWM SD you just made and after it finishes preparing the SD, install the zip from internal memory. Then you can use the files in this thread to put the cyanoboot menu on that SD.

Ok, I seem to be / was good until I got to installing zip from internal memory. This is what has happened so far.
1. Created 7.1 CWM SD with win32 disc imager ...No probs
2. Not enough room on external card to place CM 10.1 zip file even though I started with 16 Gb....so I assumed you meant load CM 10.1 to Nook HD+ internal memory from my PC...no problem there.
3. This is where I got stuck: 7.1 card booted up just fine, but then I wasn't quite sure what next step was...found "install zip from internal SD" and tried that, but of course it sent the update - apparently - to emmc, as Cyanogenmod spinner logo now comes up after reboot.
So my question is how do I need to go about installing from internal memory once CWM 7.10 is running. Is there an adb command I'l need, or did I just choose wrong option?

You used the correct menu item.
If you used an sdcard version of the CM zip, it should have put it on the SD. You can tell by popping the SD out of the slot and booting. It should still boot to stock if you used the correct version. Then when you put the SD back in the slot it should boot to CM.
If you have it correct, then use the files in this thread to add the cyanoboot menu so you can boot back and forth without taking the card out.

Missing memory on SD CM10 boot
First post so I hope I'm putting this in the right place.
I have a Nook HD+ 32GB
I' ve started with Leapinlar's
[CWM/ROOT/EXTRAS] HD/HDplus Stock Root and other Mods
I've then used verygreen's
[Nook HD+] CM10.1 development for sdcard last update 09/04
All that seems to be fine but in CM10.1
Settings - storage reports internal memory 1GB and no SD memory or available mounts
x-plore reports /storage/emulated/0 and /Root as 850MB free of 1GB
Without the SD card - reverting to stock - I have 2.44GB used and 26.56GB available.
Is the 1GB apparently available on a partion on the SD card? I only had a 2GB SD going spare - this now has three partitions, the boot files and two others, one of 1GB. If I'd used a 32GB card would I have 31GB free?
But, more importantly, can anyone tell me how I get CM to give me my 32GB of internal storage back?
Please?
FWIW I expect to run CM10 from internal memory in the long run, but want to be sure that a couple of critical apps run OK before replacing the B&N stock.

Everything is as it should be. You only have 1GB for 'sdcard' since you only used a 2GB SD. If you had used a 32GB, you would have close to 31GB for 'sdcard'.
And on an SD install, the internal memory is still there but not as 'sdcard'. It shows as a folder named 'emmc'.
Since you are planning on installing CM to internal memory, it will be even different yet. 'Sdcard' will be your internal memory and your external SD will be shown as ext_sdcard.
And do not pay too much attention to the settings/storage. People get very confused when reading that since it mixes apples and oranges. (Media storage and app storage).

Finally...it worked! Thanks leapinlar, for all your help!
I encountered the situation above and am wondering if, say, instead of the 2GB card I use a 16 GB...that gives me 16 GB of storage for the CM 1.0 tablet, and my regular flash storage also stays 16 GB? Or all the apps are by default stored on the emmc?

On the SD install, both media and apps get stored on the SD. If you use a 16GB SD to install CM to, it will have about 15GB available for media and app storage instead of 1GB on the 2GB card. But 2GB is really too small to be running CM. You will be running out of app and media storage very quickly.
Since you will be dual booting, when booted to stock the media and apps will be stored on internal memory. You will either have 13GB or 28GB available on stock on emmc depending on the size of the device (16 or 32GB model).

Updating SD version of CM 10.1
I know I've seen this elsewhere, but can't find it...if I go to update the rom on the SD card, it makes sense to me that I would need to load the latest SD version from verygreen's page...or can I just update from settings and not lose dual boot? Also, will a dirty install work so that the data is not lost? (backups are always good )
Man we're enjoying dual boot. My Acer a500 is unreliable so I backed the "build a city town park" up with Helium app. Long story short, with dual boot my kid and I get to continue building and enjoying our monsters in "Monsterama Park" by booting to CM 10.1and restoring data, yet I don't have to give up some of the reader features that I really like with the original Nook OS. Marvelous find....again, thanks y'all for the hard work!
