Can't get the Nook Color to recognize boot SD card

Hey fellas,
I followed all the steps in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1030227 that link up until step 8, where my Nook would not recognize the SD card as a boot disk. My laptop does, however, which means the burning of cwm3.2.0.1 worked fine. The Nook just starts up as it normally would without automatically booting into recovery. The SD card is recognized as a standard SD card in the Nook, and all the files are seen (but can't be opened because they're not recognized...I'm not sure if I missed something or what, but I can't figure it out. It's running stock 1.2 and the SD card is a class 10 Samsung 32G, which works just fine. Any advice?

Is that actually why it's not going to boot? I think I have a 2GB class 4 in my phone...

Sandisk. It's important that it be a Sandisk class 4.

Somehow your card is not burned properly. It could be your card like misry said. But it could also be the steps you took. Pay attention to what eyeballer said in his first post. 'Run as administrator' and use external usb readers instead of built in readers.
The Nook is very finicky about how a card is formatted before it will boot from it. Your PC can read it, but the Nook will not boot from it. If the image from eyeballer is burned properly, it will boot.

Now that he mentions it I think leapinlar has a better handle on this one.

i actually have the same problem...
i have a sandisk 32gb class 10-doesnt boot from that
i have a sandisk 16gb class 4-doesnt boot from that
i know my nook can boot from sd because i have been dual booting for a couple days now until i could find the correct tutorial for my nook (no green or blue sticker, 1.4.2, 8gb model)
what do you think i should do?
edit:when i do the dual boot, it works with either card

What are you booting? The trick is to get the card formatted so it will boot in the first place.
Also if your dual boot sd is a cm, boot to that and go to ROM Manager and flash CWM to emmc using the first menu choice. Then you have CWM on internal memory you can use for flashing, backing up, etc.

i run Team-B-CM7SD-Alpha_final on my dual boot, but when i put the emmc .zip into my sd and booted i couldnt find it in the rom manager, only shows folders

First you are running on a Nook Tablet, not a Nook Color. You will never get eyeballers CWM card to run on that. That is for Nook Color. Second, that is not how you flash CWM with ROM Manager. You use the first two menu choices. But you will find no CWM for the Nook Tablet listed there. I suggest you start reading the Nook Tablet forums, this is Nook Color.

I think my not being able to boot is an issue with the Nook. On my first Nook that I got around Christmas, the root worked just fine. But the one I was recently asked to root, with the same card (32GB class 10), no success. I'm trying to find a backdoor into recovery so I can circumvent this issue. there has to be a way to manually boot into stock recovery and work from there

You say you got the card to boot to the CWM card on your other nook. Will it still boot it? If you have prepared the card fresh, see if you can boot it with either nook. And you are sure this second nook is a Nook Color, not a Nook Tablet like the other user above? They look very much alike.
Edit: You say root, do you mean you want to root the stock on emmc or do you mean flash CM on emmc?
Edit 2: If you are using winimage to burn, be sure to select "Restore Virtual Hard Disk Image on Physical Drive" rather than "write disk".

Stock does not have the option to use Apps2sd. But why would you want too? Stock basically has unlimited app storage space as long as you do not load up your internal media SD with media files.
Or were you meaning that you wanted to move apps installed on stock to your SD installation of CM? Apps2SD does not accomplish that. You must manually copy them from stock to CM.

Hi Larry hope you doing good. I am running CM10 on my nook HD+ thus could sideload apps but I didnt rooted it (Following the thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2062613 performed the point 1. and 3. and skipped 2.) . I installed certain games like NFS: Most Wanted which are extremely big almost 2 GBs and so others. Is it possible that if I can move them on the external SD card as they are currently installed on the inbuilt memory.

You are talking a little apples and oranges (stock and CM10).
If you followed the instructions in that thread, you installed those things to stock, as that is what those zips do.
CM10 is already rooted. If you wanted gapps on CM10, you needed to flash the gapps-jb-20121011-signed.zip from goo.im. Use the CWM from the SD install to install them.
If you installed that game on stock, then what I said earlier about internal memory still applies. It has a huge area to install apps. No need to use Apps2sd.
If you installed the game to CM10, then the app is installed on the SD /data partition. But that is only 2GB. So that game would have trouble with CM10. But CM10 has apps2sd built in and you can move the game from the SD /data partition to the SD CM10SDCARD partition. Just go to settings, applications and pick that app and say to move to SD. It will move it from what it calls internal memory (but is really the SD /data partition), to SD (which is really the CM10SDCARD partition).

Okay I think I am getting little confused. I am not running CM10 on my Nook HD+. What I did actually is or have is (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2062613): following this thread I entered into Clockworkmod (CWM) Recovery and then flashed (Gapps/Play Store + Extras (rev2 - 2/3/2013) ) into CWM.
Thats all. I didnt flash the zip for rooting the device. Now I have access to the file browser and permission to install apks. And I am using it happily. But when I install the apk it gets installed in the device internal memory, the 32GB model. Thus it gets installed there but not to the external 16 GB memory card that I have inserted.
Going to the application manager doesnt shows with the option to move it to SD card. This is what I see. I am attaching the screenshot for so to avoid confusion.

And this SD card listed in the screenshot is actual Nooks Memory but not that of external SD card. The apps are treating device internal memory as the SD card memory

Well, as I have said to you many times, stock does not have apps2sd capability. But it can use most of that 32GB to install that huge app. As long as you have not loaded up your media sdcard with media files, you should have plenty of room. If you have it loaded up, move some of that to external sdcard.
Edit: some apps are hard coded to try to install to SD with apps2sd. That may be the issue (Edit: it is not). It definitely says it loaded it to SD (edit: not). One thing you could try is my swap SD zip so that the external SD becomes SDCARD.
And your third post said you were running CM10.
Edit2: that SD card number just means that it has 2GB of data that it uses on sdcard, not that it is installed to sdcard. The app itself is only 30MB. So if you do not want the app using 2GB of your internal media file space, do the swap I mentioned above.

I think I understood it. Thanks man. But if i perform a swap by flashing sd card zip. Will I be able to install in future the apps on internal memory or will this capability be gone forever? and in future after performing this flash, I can only install apps on external sd card. ?

The swap has nothing to do with where the apps get installed. You misunderstand. They still always get installed to internal. All this changes is where the apps store their data. By default apps install their data (media files and helper data files like that app does) to SDCARD. And on stock, SDCARD is the internal sdcard. The external SD is called ext_sdcard and apps don't use it. All my swap does is make the external card be SDCARD and the internal sdcard be ext_sdcard.
So if you uninstall that app, do the swap, reboot, then reinstall the app, the 30MB app still gets put on internal and the 2 GB of helper files get put on your external SD.

So I rooted my nook hd and i have 2 questions, is there any way to move the data of my apps to my ext_sdcard now that i have rooted? I tried an app2sd app but it said my device does not have this capability. Also is your version of verygreen's CM10.1 compatible with the 7 inch nook hd? because it only sayd HDplus. Thank you, i hope you respond.

When you say you have rooted your HD, do you mean you have rooted stock so that it has root access, or do you mean you replaced stock with CM10.1?
And what do you mean my version of verygreen's CM10.1? I don't have a version of CM10.1. Or did you mean my swap zip?

I'm using Unofficial Carbon JB3 on a Nook HD+ 16GB. Settings | Apps | <select app> doesn't show any option to move apps to SD.
App Mgr III when installed says:
The device does not have a real primary external storage, or the primary external storage is emulated.
Moving app to SD function cannot be supported by this device.
Have you seen or used the App 2 SD option on a Nook HD+?
Alternatively I'd like to use your sdcard / ext_sdcard swap utility. If I do I'd like to move everything currently in the sdcard folder to my actual external SD card. Would this be a good way of doing that?:
1) Copy sdcard contents to ext_sdcard
2) Run utility
3) Delete ext_card contents

Yes, follow those steps.
And app2sd positively does not work on the HD/HD+. And the reason it does not is the reason stated in the message, emulated storage. I don't know what the app would say after you ran my swap. Probably the same thing.
But be warned I have the CM10 swap set so it only will install on official CM builds.

So I'm trying to follow everything from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=38153094#post38153094 and I got lost at the part where I have to burn the image. When I burn it basically repartitioned my 8gig sd card down to 120mbs... What am I doing wrong? I don't know if I need to burn cwm first or if it's included there?

That is what it is supposed to do, be 120 MB. And that 120Mb includes the CWM so you can flash the CM ROM. When you boot it in the nook, it further partitions it so that CM can be installed on the SD. Don't worry, the rest of your 8GB will be available.

Ok, the problem I had was that I was confused regarding where to put the rest of the files, apperantly I'm and idiot and didn't realize I'm supposed to put them in the internal memory... Ok let's see how it goes, thanks!

I'm not sure you read my instructions. I said to put the CM zip, gapps zip and converter zip on the internal media SD built into the nook, not on the external SD inserted into your PC. So it does not matter if the SD is only 120 MB, you are copying nothing there. Just download the zips with stock to internal SD or hook your cable to the PC with stock booted and copy to internal SD.

Oh no I figured it out!!! I thought I deleted that comment I didnt want to embarrass myself.. I have another question, I'm using an 8gig card, but I want to get a 64gib card, what should I do when I get the new card, reburn and do the same steps? Thank you for replying to my question so quickly you're ****ing awesome! Wow I'm just messing around with cm10, it's like a new tablet, holy ****. Sketchbook pro appears to have less latency, finally I can draw! So what else is possible with cm10 now, what do you like about cm10 that wasn't possible before? Also what build prop is the tablet being seen as now?

If you want to move to a larger card, use win32diskimager to read the 8GB card to a file. The file will be 8GB. Then use win32diskimager to write that file to your new 64GB card. Then use partitioning software like Mini-Tool Partition Wizard to expand the last partition to the full size of the card.
The build prop is set as a B&N Nook HD.

[Q] SD card not reading Nook HD+ Cyanogenmod 10.1

So, a few days ago verygreen uploaded his emmc cyanogenmod install for Nook HD+. I was ecstatic but only got around to installing it today. Install went great up until after flashing the rom.The nook threw an error when trying to unmount the sd card (as per verygreen's instructions) "no problem, I'll just shut down the tablet" I thought. So I do so, remove the SD card, turn the tablet back on, and insert a seperate SD card for storage. The rom loaded up just fine and everything seemed normal. I downloaded and ran a benchmark to see that everything was up to par then went to take a screenshot (to compare to other versions later). A second later I looked at my notifications bar to see a message that the screenshot could not be taken because there is no SD card. After a short investigation I realized that the SD card wasn't showing up in my storage section. It showed up just fine in my computer and I've used the card in this nook before. Just to be sure I plugged the CWM card from earlier, sure enough it didn't show up either. As I'm not a complete novice I figured I should try reflashing before coming here. I did so and the nook seemed to recognize that the card was there! Wait, it now says the card is blank or in an unsupported filesystem. Checking the SD on the computer shows it to be in Fat32, which worked in all previous Roms just fine and clicking the notification to try and format also does nothing. Anyone have any advice?
Additionally I should probably mention that I am using the 05/05 Rom, which I thought was supposed to fix mounting issues

Yours was on Hybrid and easily solved. His is on emmc.

You make it sound like you are trying to insert the SD after you have booted to CM10.1. That won't work. You must boot with the SD already inserted so that it is recognized while CM10.1 starts up.

You make it sound like you are trying to insert the SD after you have booted to CM10.1. That won't work. You must boot with the SD already inserted so that it is recognized while CM10.1 starts up.

That didn't work I'm afraid. The message about the blank SD card is gone but it still won't let me save a screenshot. Gives a message about the storage being in use. Also, attempting to move an app to the SD card says there's not enough space... On my freshly formatted 32 gigabyte card that, once again, works and reads just fine on my computer. I will mention there is a header for the SD under my storage tab in settings, and it attempts to calculate the used space of the SD, however it does that whether the card is in or not. For that reason I don't think it means anything. Any other ideas? Because I'm certainly at a loss.

How did you freshly format the card? With Windows? You need to use a program named SDFormatter free on the web.
If you boot with no card in you will see that it does not show a card under storage, does not attempt to calculate, etc. There is something about your card it does not like. The hardware on the HD+ is notoriously faulty when it comes to SDs. Format it with SDFormatter, clean the contacts, make sure it is seated well in the slot and anything else you can do to improve things.

I'm a moron. I failed to notice that the rom that the I downloaded actually was the 05/04 rom, the one with no bluetooth or SD mounting... In my defense verygreen hadn't updated his post (I downloaded from the one he linked in the body of his text, not at the bottom). *Sigh* Still though, I should have been paying more attention and if I had been less lucky I could have bricked my device. Anyways, after flashing the PROPER rom SD mounting works fine (though it was a bit finicky, requiring a reboot before finally working). Anyways thanks for your time, and sorry for giving inaccurate information.

what is the sd format allowed by hd+ in emmc?
I wanted to follow up on this thread by asking a general concluding question-
In order to use the sd cards directly in emmc, will the SD cards have to be in fat32 format only? Or can it be in exfat (or even ntfs)? According to a thread, somebody put a quote from the nook website that it can handle exfat.
The reason is that I wanted my nook to be able to read mkvs. I went through the sdformatter software, and it seems that it only formats in fat32.

I am having same problems.Inastalled Verygreen's CM10.1 on internal storage this morning.SD card is not being recognized by nook.I go to settings and tap "storage" and settings force closes,Tried to mount sd card thru recoveryand error message comes up.I formatted sd card in windows and then SD Formatter in fat32 format,C
leaned sd slot with compressd air,No go.Tried 3 different cards Samsung.sandisk class 10 32 gb,sandisk class 4 16gb ,Samsung class10 8gb same result.E

I temporarily had the same issue, but mine was caused by me tampering with /system/etc/vold.fstab to test a new swap I was trying to make. I changed a setting there and it would not recognize the SD and settings/storage crashed. So that tells me that your system is definitely not mounting the SD. It could be a faulty SD slot. Are you sure you are completely clicking the SD into the slot? Did the slot work well when running stock?
Edit: How does it act when you boot with no SD inserted? Does settings crash? And what happens if you insert the SD after it is booted to CM10.1? Does settings crash then?

It was working fine with stock as well as hybrids from Verygreen as well as Bokbokan.I will try doing a complete wipe including system.Previusly I wiped data and catch partitions.

I have tried all of the things listed on here. My sd card is formatted fat32. it reads just fine on my computer but when inserted into my phone I can't move apps to it, I can't open it to look at my files. I even tried removing everything from the sd and starting over. This has only been since I upgraded to cyanogenmod 10.1. any suggestions? I really want to move some stuff and am in need of my music files at the gym

You cannot move apps to SD with CM10.1. Apps2SD is not implemented.
And to access your external SD, you need to look in ext_sdcard. But CM10.1 on emmc uses the internal SD by default for everything. You can change that by flashing my swap SD zip from my HD/HD+ CWM thread linked in my signature. See item 4.

it isn't showing up when I go to unzip on my phone.
This has proven to mean this isn't compatible with my phone. is there another version you can suggest for me to try?

It is a Nook HD+ rom, and will not work on a non-Nook HD+ device. Try the roms in the Galaxy Exhibit development forum.

If This Helps Anyone...
I spent roughly 4 to 5 days' worth of working hours sitting here at my laptop, trying more and more frustratingly, to get my Nook HD+ to take the new CM Rom, and then dealt with about a dozen full 1080p HD movies I had already spent about 3 hours each to convert to .mp4 and the right size for my Nook, which now was not showing ANY of the content on my 32g SD card. Well, I tried all the formatting (using the SDformatter program), all the re-booting and putting the content directly on it through the Nook, and putting the files on it through my laptop, and I got nothing.
Finally, after noticing a theme among most of the users who were having problems specifically with SanDisk and/or 32gb sized cards, I took the awesome (and expensive) 64gb class 10 SDXC Samsung card out of my Note 2 phone, and formatted that one using the SDF program, and put it on 'exFAT', and after putting the blank card back in my Nook (powering it off fully first), I had to COPY THE FOLDER FROM THE NOOK'S MAIN STORAGE CALLED "MY FILES" AND PASTE IT INTO THE SD CARD STORAGE. Then, I opened it and made folders inside that one for Movies, Music, eBooks, etc... I then loaded the movies onto it via the Nook itself, making sure to paste the files into the SD folder. I also noticed that I needed to keep the Nook from falling asleep, and set it to the highest setting of time before it would go into sleep mode (30 min) and had to keep swiping the screen to reset that time. I also just loaded one large movie file or a few smaller video files at a time, because if the screen went off, or if I had videos loading onto the Nook for more than a couple minutes, then I would get the frequently reported error saying that it 'could not copy'.
After doing all of this, I was finally able to start a couple of my movies with minor problems. I hate how it says in the video player I was using, that you have to use the right side touchscreen to swipe on an invisible volume control up or down, and it was extremely sensitive but also not easy to control.
So, to review:
-Try using a different card other than SanDisk and 32gb
-DL the free SDformatter program and use that to format ANY card you put in your CM rooted Nook! Try to set it at 'exFAT' also.
-Power OFF the Nook before installing the new SD card.
-Then plug the Nook into your computer, and COPY-PASTE the file folder "My Files" in the Nook's MAIN STORAGE and put it into the SD card. Make folders inside this one to sort your movies, music, books, etc.
-Copy-Paste your files that are NOT eBooks from your computer into the new 'My Files' on the SD card. (I suggest using Calibre or another program to load eBooks into your Nook after you have gotten all the metadata correct for each book.) Keep the Nook 'awake' and do not allow the screen to enter sleep mode during loading of files. Make sure to load only about 3 minutes' worth, or no more than one LARGE movie file at a time onto the Nook, to prevent it from disconnecting and giving you an error pop-up.
That should do it, and if you have problems after this, then maybe ask around more. I only know how this works by my own extensive (and exhausting) trial and error...

[Q] Having Trouble Creating SD Card with CM7 for Nook

I need some help with creating an SD card to boot android from on a Nook HD.
I tried this guide:

I used an old 8gb sandisk micro SD i got from a cell phone
Used win32 disk imager and flashed generic-sd card image onto the root of sd card
Then I took out the card and re-inserted it to get it recognize the new image as F:boot which has 4 files on it MLO U-boot, U ram disk, and u image
Then I went to install CM 7.2 files onto the SD - that's where i ran into trouble. It gave "Error No Room on Disk". I looked at the space on the Sd card and it said it was only 113Mb. _Please help. What did i do wrong when flashing the image file onto SD card to make the sd card smaller?

You have really got things mixed up. This is a Nook HD/HD+ thread and you linked to a Nook Color thread (they are different devices). CM7 does not run on the Nook HD. No wonder things are not working for you.
If you truly have a Nook HD, find a Nook HD thread for installing CM to SD (has to be CM10/CM10.1/CM10.2 though).

Thank you for the reply. I checked and yes I do have a Nook HD 8GB. I got it from walmart for $129.
So just to confirm - No CM7 will run on Nook HD?
Can you install CM 10 without rooting the device? And if so, is a non-rooted install that runs directly off the SD Card significantly slower than it was flashed to internal memory?
If CM 10 has to be installed to the internal memory, are there dual boot options that would keep what i have on the nook saved?
Also, I noticed when i tried to put CM7 on the SD card, it created a 113 image file, and left the remainder of the disk as "unallocated" - so during the install process how does that unallocated space get turned into usable space?

No, CM7 will run on the Nook HD.
You do not have to root stock to run CM from SD. You can run CM10.1 from the SD and leave stock intact. So you can boot back and forth. If you do, I recommend the hybrid install here:

It runs more quickly and has more stability. But be warned the instructions can be confusing.
There are no dual boot options that allow you to fully install two systems to internal memory.
And that old Nook Color SD that you used is different than how the Nook HD SD is installed. But you do have to follow directions to get everything to work and fit.
