In the future? I have the S4 now, but I really like the idea of voice control and active notifications. But now that I have gone with wireless charging I don't want to give it up. I like the X even though it doesn't have expandable memory or an IR transmitter(may be a deal breaker), but I will not change without wireless charging. This is just a speculation thread. I know all the "customizations" for the X aren't yet available, so do you think that could be a later customization in time for the holiday season? Or is this just pie in the sky dreaming. I don't dislike the S4, I just do really like the X. Just would like to get your thoughts.
wireless charging maybe come later.
Chances are next to 0. S4 got it from being able to change the back of the phone. Best you will get is something like the power mat chargers. Which defeat the who object.

unless it came in the form of a case, it would take a whole new phone.

I didn't know if it would be a different "back" like with the wood and stuff. I'm sure it would make the custom moto installed back slightly larger, but I was just hoping. I guess it's all in vain.

Can anyone answer if there is any differences between the driod mini and x hardware or software wise. (outside of the VZW bloat that is) I know the mini has a 4.3 and 2000 mah battery. I mean the battery life should be comparable because of the smaller screen I would assume? I'm just wondering if there is any difference in the X specific items?
Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk 4
no
Adding a charging mechanism (easily) requires for the hardware to support such a change beforehand.
The S4 has two contacts on the back specifically for adding a wireless charging module to the battery cover.
The Galaxy Nexus has a pogo connector on the side which can be intercepted (and routed to the battery cover) to add wireless charging.
The Droid mini and Maxx have different motherboard designs from the moto X, and had the extra contacts added to allow for a wireless charging module.
From what I can tell from teardown reports, the Moto X has no such contacts available (someone please correct me if I'm wrong), and thus would require a new motherboard design to add such a feature (not likely)
So unless you feel like modifying your USB connector, no.
I wasn't referring to modifying the device myself. I was referring to future customizations that moto has yet to announce. Like the wood backs. I didn't know if this might be one of those things that could be added in the future to the moto maker tool when they open it up to other carriers. Other than extending a special back a tiny bit, I'm sure the wiring while being built can't be thay big of a deal. I just don't know if it is in the future cards for the X.

The Droid Mini has an LCD display so it doesn't have active notifications as they are in the Moto X. On the mini, the screen will pulse once, power off completely until you move the phone and the notification LED will keep blinking if you have notifications (Yes, the mini has a notification LED since it's using an LCD display).
EDIT: found the video of a comparison

I believe it's possible to build an induction charging circuit, put it in a flexible sheet of rubber or something, plug it into your phone, and use it as a lightweight case. Just flatten it out when wirelessly charging.

You can ask this question about any new device that comes out. Would you upgrade from your current phone to a newer phone? And my answer is that if your current phone does everything you need it to, then there's no point in upgrading.

N5 pros over MotoX
- colourful LED notifications
- strong dev community
- processor
Moto X pros over N5
- everything else
So unless those few things bother you, just stick with the Moto X
If the Nexus 5 releases with a larger battery option I will be all over it.
If it has the same size battery as the moto x I will not be picking it up.
This phone has me absolutely addicted to all day battery life.

Am I the only person here who couldn't care less about what version of android the X gets updated to? The phone is perfect as is. I bought it for the features it was advertised to have, and Motorola delivered in spades. From this point on, if it never receives another update, I will still be just as happy with it.
Switching seems a bit crazy, but if I didn't already own the Moto X and wasn't majorly dissapointed with my Nexus 7, then yeah, I'd probably go for the Nexus 5, since I think it looks nice and its cheaper. Either way, I already own the Moto X and I'm very happy with it.

1) Moto X got rid of the LED notifications because they're using active notifications which are more helpful.
2) Yes that may be true
3) Processors aren't everything but fine.

I agree. 4.3 was an incremental update and 4.4 barely more than that. On this device I doubt either update will really make much of a difference... Not that I don't want them, it just doesn't seem important when the phone runs spectacularly as it is. That's the same reason I don't care about the lack of development.

Yes, processors aren't everything but the N5 with out a doubt has a better CPU and GPU and will have a better dev community which will lead to a better working phone. Active notifications are awesome but only if you're near your phone. If your phone is charging on a desk a couple of meters away from you and you hear it vibrate how will active notification tell you what happened?

It still flashes on screen every few seconds if you have a new text, email, missed call, etc. The only time this feature auto shuts off to my knowledge is at night (configurable) and when the phone is in your pocket or face down.
Besides all that, I'm sure the N5 will be a great phone with great support, however the chances of it coming to Verizon are slim to none so its not even an option for a lot of us.

You wont be able to tell what it is. With an RGB LED you can set different colours to represent different types of notifications.
Anyway, I keep hearing everyone say Verizon has terrible phone options. What's so special about Verizon that you guys stay (I'm from Canada)?
Verizon has the best signal, but has a soviet union business model and is expensive. However it works everywhere. Only reason I stay is cause I use my phone for business. My bonus is sticking 20+ gigs to them every month
I really like the Moto X but it doesnt seem to have much support from xda. What do you guys think?
Doesn't really need support. The out of box experience is virtually flawless.
Moto X on Verizon
Would love to hear from people on this. I am on Verizon and in the same boat. Anyone had the S4 and switch to the moto x?
I moved from the htc one to the Moto X and I have no regrets whatsoever. Better battery, better in the hand, no bloatware. It's like a Nexus you can buy on subsidy.
What you get from HTC One and GS4:
Better hardware, often lag and stuttering, more dev support, 1080p displays, slow updates, better camera, worse battery life
What you get from Moto X:
Worse hardware, no lag ever (games and applications load noticeably faster than the one and the S4), less deuv support, 720p display that has great color, updates faster than most nexus devices (got 4.4 on moto x faster than on Nexus 10, 7, 4, htc one gpe, and gs4 gpe), worse camera (but starts up faster and is still reasonable quality), easily 20+ hour battery life, active notifications, touchless control, virtually stock android, and much more...
Up to you

Because s4 had amoled, you could use Dynamic Notifications, which was the same thing. It actually had even more customizability than Active Notifications.

I actually didn't care for dynamic notifications, yes it had more features but I didn't work as flawless. 99 times out of a hundred when I grab my phone and look at it the time would show and I could unlock my screen. I have hit my power button to turn on my screen maybe 10 times since I bought it.

What do you need xda support for? To remove a bunch of crap or an aosp ROM with the latest android version?
You are in good hands... Moto X doesn't need that. You thinking about that Samsung Galaxy S4 at this point? Please don't buy that plastic crapped with ugly touchwiz. At least the HTC one is a beautiful piece of a phone.
Sent from my XT1053 using Tapatalk
Here's the way I look at it. The Moto X can do things no other phone can do. With root and xposed I can do what most roms can do. Easy decision.
Sent from my XT1056 using Tapatalk
Yep, the lack of development us because all you need is root. There's no need for custom ROMs. All you need is stock, or root + xposed framework.
Sent from my Moto X, please forgive any misswypes and forgotten words.
I have owned all 3 devices on Verizon. I started with the S4, and returned it for what the salesman said was a silly reason. The reason being the back button was on the wrong side of the screen for my preference, and I couldn't reach across the screen with my thumb and hit the back button easily.
I traded it back in within the 14 day trial on the HTC One. I really like the HTC one and the speakers. I also like the ability to turn it into a TV remote control. It has eye appeal, people think it looks cool and ask what kind of phone it is. I didn't like the power and volume buttons that are flush. I found that I had to look and make sure I was pushing in the right spot.
I really wanted to try the Moto X though, with the notifications and voice monitoring. It was a bonus that I was able to get kit kat on the second day I had it, and even cooler that it was rooted the day after that on kit kat. I usually trade phones once a month with people on craigslist just so I can try out something different, but I really like this phone.
You'll probably get biased opinions since you're posting in the Moto X forum, but here's my $.02.
I've been doing the xda/android/rom thing since the original droid. This is the first phone that has felt fine out of the box and I haven't even bothered to check to see if root and/or unlocked bootloaders have been achieved. My last phone was the GS3.
After looking around at everything I realized that all phones are basically the same. You interact with all of them the same way and they provide information in the same way. The only differences are size and quality issues (camera, screen, battery, etc...). The only unique phones are the Note 3 (with its active digitizer/stylus) and the Moto X. I was really leaning toward the note 3 since I jot down a lot of notes at work. Then I got my wife a Moto X. Two days later I had to have one. The real kicker for me was how it changes how I use my phone. Active notifications are nice and really handy, but I'm probably one of the few who uses touchless control a lot. The hands-free texting works great (especially while in the car). I use Google Now reminders several times a day. If I'm commuting and I remember something that needs be done, it's great to just say it and have my phone remind me. I find that I'm using Google now a lot. For example - If I'm cooking and need to make a conversion, I just ask the Moto. Or in the morning I ask it what the forecast is and what is my agenda while I'm shaving. It's surprising how much that step of unlocking/touching my phone used to prevent me from using it.
Now the downsides. The back of the phone looks great, but I think the front looks a little cheap. Battery life has been pretty good, but not as stellar as what others are reporting. It still is plenty to last all day. I will miss my GS3's removable storage and memory. I don't take a lot of pictures, but I hear that the Moto X's camera is so-so compared to the others.
I'm not going to go in-depth. I had the HTC One, wife has the S4, and I now have the Moto X. I personally like the Moto X more than both the former phones. Due to many reasons. S4 is too big for my taste. I always thought I wanted a big screen, but after using it I don't like it. The HTC was just too oddly shaped for my taste, and the whole Sense thing ruined it for me, as does T-wiz. After flashing an AOSP ROM on both of those phones, they were just knockoffs of the GE phones. Meh. I love my Moto X. Traded my HTC straight across for it and don't feel bad at all.
I was also worried about switching from 1080p to 720p and see no difference. I may be biased because I have one, but until I actually got it, I thought it was such a stupid phone due to the HTC and the S4 hype, and me thinking, "Nothing is as good as these two phones!". Boy was I wrong.
Oh yeah! Touchless Controls and Active Display are the ****!
Oh yeah x2! I was a serious flashaholic with my other phones and saw how slow the Moto X development seemed to be. That also had me shying away from it, but damn! I don't feel like I need to do ANYTHING. Only thing I did was root simply for Xposed so I can use GravityBox to change some colors.

I did on Sprint. I can't go back to the S4 or any samsung product until they clean up touchwiz. Plus all those features are not necessary. The main selling point of Samsung is the camera, but I feel the X is passable. At this point its Motorola or Nexus devices from here on out.

I am new to the moto x and I'm coming from galaxy note 2. I'm a lil nervous about it as I'm coming from removable batteries and expandable memory. I have a couple questions, is battery decent I have had a s3 and made it through the day no problems so I'm not to worried but still somewhat worried. My big thing is memory, I only got the 16gb as it was free. I know I can save my pics on drop box or drive but can I save my apps somewhere like that? Is there anything else I should be excited or keep an eye out for or try when I get the phone on Monday?
I briefly had a note 2 (and gs3 before that). Keep your pics on google+ or Dropbox and keep your phone memory for other stuff. Don't let Google music cache automatically (it's in settings). For battery I'm getting about 24 hours but it will depend on your on screen time and your signal strength. Also if you use exchange for work it will wake lock your phone. Might want to stay on 4.2 or root and manually add the 4.4.2 exchange files.

Well, you can always use ADB and try to pull the /sdcard tree out to your computer. That is where a lot of games keep their data, but other than that you might use... I think it is called Helix Backup? Something like that (I don't have a link handy, may be called Carbon Copy Backup or Carbon Backup) but it'll backup data without root.
Assuming you are worried about starting over so you can root it, then... Yeah something like that would work fine. So, backup, then use the SlapmyMoto method which rooted for me with no problem.
You can't store game data on DropBox, it takes up memory. I keep my phone lean on games because of that fact.
I came from a Note 2. It's been collecting dust ever since I received my X in the mail.
1. Battery life is as good as the Note 2 and far better than the S3. The radios in the X are better than both the S3 and N2.
2. Return it and buy the 32gb. It's worth the difference. I lamented the lack of a microSD slot but with just the OS installed, I had ~27gb free.
3. Google Play Games
4. Start designing on MotoMaker. Don't buy the glass protector from the Moto site, grab one from MimeUSA.
Att didn't offer the 32 gb or I would of got it. Only reason I got it was its free through att. I think ill be OK as long as I keep pics and videos off as I only had the 16 gb on all the galaxy phones.

Battery used to rock, now I usually get 8-12hrs depending on usage. Definitely have to pop it up on the charger mid-day if I want it to make it through. It's a little better than the Gnex I came from but since you can't remove the battery (I always used to keep a spare in my wallet) it's overall a lot less and a lot more worrisome when I check my phone at 8pm before going out and see 2% battery remaining and there's nothing I can do about it. Seems from the people here that your mileage will vary though.

Your total battery time will depend also on what you're doing with your phone, what options/features are enabled and your screen time. But if you have something killing your battery then have a read through the "how's your battery life" thread in general section. Lots of help there.

I did read in the L change log that it will support ok Google while the screen is turned off. Was hoping for the reading texts aloud and respond while driving. AGENT app will help with that if it's not available on the n6. Active display I guess could be replaced with dynamic since it's an amoled screen.

How does Dynamic handle security passcode on the phone? Since DN's security feature isn't built-in, it acts really weird and could easily be bypassed. I would think Moto Display would be tighter.

Moto display world be tighter for sure but if it's not compatible then dynamic would be the alternative. I'm hoping moto suite somehow is compatible but I'm not optimistic about it

I think it is AMOLED.
Not sure if it will have moto voice, but it will have "Ok Google" with the screen off.
This is the one question I'm really hoping the answer is yes. I really like the Moto Suite on the Moto X 2014, but the storage and battery size on the N6 are a big selling point to me. I don't want to have to choose, so I'm hoping the two devices are similar enough that someone figures out a way to hack the Moto Apps onto it.
(I know some of the functionality of the Moto Apps is already baked into Lolipop, but it's sounding like Moto's implementation is more fully featured.)
We've never had any OEM software on previous devices so I don't see why this would change

I guess the closest thing we got were the Google play edition phones that had stock android but a few tweaks to work with the infrared blasters and HTC camera.

That's the reverse though. That was Google releasing their stuff to OEM. Not OEM releasing their stuff to Google.
GPE had OEM frameworks.
