My first Non-HTC Phone - Nexus 5 General

So my Nexus 5 will be here in a few days! I just realized that this will be the first Android phone I have ever owned that was not made by HTC! I've owned an Android from ever since the very first HTC G1 was released. I must had owned at least 6-8 different Android phones throughout the years and every single one of them was manufactured by HTC, including of course the HTC One that I sold to buy the Nexus 5.

if speakers and screen quality are not a big deal, you're gonna love the phone, its simply amazing.

At this point, it's a pretty gutsy assumption that you'll ever actually get your hands on the N5 lol

LOL well mine has already shipped, been tracking it on UPS website and it should be here Monday or Tuesday!
I placed my order for the Black 32GB model at 1:19am MDT on Nov 1st and it finally shipped out yesterday.

Yeah I figured the speaker quality wouldn't hold a candle to the HTC One... As for the screen, I've seen mixed reviews. Alot of people say its sharp clear and bright, but a little bit washed out (which I can deal with).

You were one of the people I was keeping an eye on since I also ordered a black 32 GB device and I ordered right at 12 hours after you. I won't hold my breath but maybe it will be my turn soon...

Glad you're getting your phone, but please use an existing shipping/ordering thread for this type of discussion. This board is already cluttered enough.

Nexus One market life span?

Hey guys,
I've been looking to buy a Nexus, however Im hesitant because of all the rapid improvements to smart-phones lately. Seems like just yesterday my G1 was the **** because of its 528mhz processor.. But if I were to lay down the $500+ for it, I would hate for the "Nexus 2" to come out a month later.. accompanied by the regret and face palms. Of course, I'm not expecting that specific scenario to unfold, but how long do you think the specs for the N1 will last as a competitive player in the field? And do you think it's safe to say the upcoming android updates we have yet to experience will be compatible with it?
-Thanks for your input!
The Nexus One is a great phone, but as with the G1 ALL technology is eventually replaced, I chose the nexus one becuase its Googles phone, which means if any phone has a chance to still be the beta tester for all android things to come it would be the nexus one. The Evo and Incredible are all basically re-branded Nexus One's, same hardware different software. The nexus one was my first smartphone, actually my first phone ever (my parents hate tech lol) and I've seen people with their iphones and bberries and I pull out my nexus one and KNOW without a shadow of a doubt I have the best phone. If the nexus one looks appealing to you and you are happy with what it can do, I say you wont be dissapointed. But, if you are hesitant and iffy on the purchase, perhaps wait and see whats around Androids corner. I love my nexus one and from what I see from competitive android smartphones and still think mine is the best.
-Cheers with your decision
Sell your G1, use the money towards the N1... Do it soon, buying the N1 via google won't last much longer, once retailers get ahold of it it'll cost considerably more.
The rumor/heresay is that the N2 will be out in Nov. Then just repeat the cycle of selling old, use money towards the new one.
Kind of like you're leasing the best phone at the moment
If you say n2 will come and will wait, and when the n2 comes out ou can wait for the n3. you can do two things.
Buy a new phone, and sell it after few months to buy a new one. if you sell it before a newer version comes out you can sell it almost the same price you bought it. put some extre $ and buy a new one. I do this > i had over 30 phones in my life > i'm 22 years now
or what you also can do is skip a generation. so if you buy n1 skip n2 and wait for n3 (for example). so you can use you don't have to switch phones that often.
I bought the N1 as my first smartphone and have been very happy with it. I would say it will last a while since Google demonstrated their new OS (Android 2.2) on it and also previewed the release after that on a N1. That gave me hope to know that it will work with the release of 2.2 and also the release after that. Whether they will continue to release the new OS for it after that is unknown, but there are always custom ROMs that could add functionality.
Go For It
I say buy the N1 if you like it. Yeah, there's no front-facing camera, gyroscope, or whatever else the next line of premium Android phones will all contain. It is still going to receive Google's updates first for at least another year. Also, as with the G1, the dev community is doing excellent work and should have no problem extending it's life even further beyond that. If the G1 is still going almost 2 years and numerous updates later, Nexus owners have nothing to worry about.

I don't think so. It will be aggressively priced once it hits retailers. Or may be bundled with some accessories.
Either act today, or wait 6 months. This market moves fast.
seriously this thread has been posted so many times before. just search. the nexus will be the flagship until next january for sure. it still has a long life left, so buy it and enjoy it. nexus two isnt even a rumor yet, and wouldnt be out till next year.
Motorola has a 2ghz phone hitting store before the end of the year, with 1080P vide out.
You're never gonna be "top of the line" for more than 6 months.

I already see it listed at various other places for $650+.
Somehow, I doubt that will come down once buying straight from the "manufacturer" for "cheap" is no longer an option.

What is the longest you have kept a phone and why?

Just curious.
My phone from November 2005 till May 2009 was a Samsung Z140.
¿Why?. I still didn´t know Android, and that happened in May 2009 that I bought a HTC Magic and WOOOOW. Now I have a Samsung Galaxy S.
I swap phones about every 8-10 months, or sooner if something real interesting comes along. But, I had a HD2 for 20 months, which is a real long time for me. That was just a powerhouse of a phone though. If it wasn't for the SGS2 coming along I'd still have it now.
Probably the EVO because there wasnt a worthy upgrade until the evo3d was released.

How do you switch so often!?
The longest I had a phone was this one, and my htc glacier. I usually switched phones every few months. That list of phones is from July two years ago.

I get phones on contract 1/2 the time and then sell them and buy unbranded ones the other 1/2 the time. I'm just fickle. I was actually tempted (and still am) to get rid of my 6 month old Galaxy S2 for a Galaxy Note.
I still have my excalibur since 2007. Used it often. I like it. ALso a kaiser from 2008 and a Mega.
I actually still have an HD2 with ICS, so it stills rocks. Probably I'll buy another phone in a couple of months (waiting for prices to go down)

Buy my Galaxy S2 so I can buy a Note
Every 4-5 months I switch. I get bored easily 0.o
Sent from my HTC Sensation with Beats Audio using Tapatalk
I had my last phone - a lame Samsung flip phone - for almost 3 years because it just wasn't worth an upgrade (in my opinion). Thanks to cheaper data plans and tons more options for smartphones, it finally seemed like a good time to switch.
SAMSUNG GRAVITY 1 why? i had no money o upgrade on my 2 year contract lol
I have kept all phones I have owned since 2006. I plan on recycling all but my HD2, Captivate and my new LTE Galaxy S 2 I traded my AT&T Galaxy S 2 for yesterday.
Mine was the Moto Razr (I know... very sad). I had it for 3 yrs in College (been a few years).
Nokia 1100. Probably 13 years old at this point. I still play snake on the b!itch while I wait for roms to finish flashing.

But i still have my first phone (Panasonic GD450) which is 13 years old now Bought it when i was 12.
around 4 years, the phone has like 9 lifes
RIM Blackberry 8520, like one year and a half.
Why? Because I'm damn broke.
Then I got my Galaxy Ace <3
I bought my HD2 in dec 2009... never had a phone which lasted that long
I'm just addicted to it

Did carriers get first crack at the Nexus 6 stock?

The last I checked the poll of who got to order their Nexus 6, it was at 36 people. There's no way that Google only had less than 200 available. Is it possible that Google allowed the carriers first crack at the Nexus 6 stock and sold the remaining devices to the public?
This would explain the pitiful amount that was made available as well as the 3-4 week ship time when T-Mobile has already indicated they will have them in stores on the 12th.
Just a thought.

Why not?
Could be simple low yields due to Q/C, could be due to delayed container arrival from China...could also be the classic tactic every retailer in the USA pulls on Black Friday every single...having less than 12 of any listed item in store for purchase.
Could also be intentional.
Google killing their own sales figures by gifting stock at less than MSRP to carriers seems unlikely. Megacorps only see $$$ signs, that is where the most likely explanation lies.

You can't make money if you don't have product to sell so your explanation doesn't work either.

My preferred explanation is stock price manipulation by leveraging PR from a quick sellout.
Companies make more money gambling with stocks and arcane financial instruments than off customers.
I wouldn't be surprised if that's what happened though. They did confirm that they only had a "limited number" available for pre-order. And when you take the facts into account it makes sense.
1- First Nexus to be available on all major carriers
2- First (recent) Nexus to have a premium price tag
3- The only nexus to be the same price within the play store as outside the play store.
Maybe Google is going away from subsidizing it themselves and wanting you to get it subsidized through the carriers.

Google never subsidized. They cut corners. The N5 was a seriously trimmed LG G2, which easily explained the price difference between the two... just like how the Nexus 6 is basically a Note 4 in Moto clothing. Nexus 5 was a budget-friendly quite nice phone, while the Nexus 6 is a flagship phone at not QUITE a flagship price.

But for Google, they'll probably make the same or even more money per unit as say Samsung with the Note 4 since Google doesn't spend much money on R&D and almost nothing on marketing. The Nexus line has always been "marketed" by the users and designed off another flagship and the N6 is another testament.

As of a few hours ago, I have yet to find a decent unboxing video. I've seen a couple that were like 2 minutes long and just showed the contents of the box and gave the phone specs. We already know what comes in the box and we've known the specs for the past 2 months. I'd like to see a 10 minute long video unboxing the phone, powering up, close ups to see how the phone looks in the real world etc. By the way, what's up with people advertising Nexus 6 unboxing videos when they are just photos of the phone? I'm just annoyed because I wasn't one of the lucky few that successfully pre-ordered a 32gb Midnight Blue Nexus 6. Damn it!

Nexus 6 available again from Motorola.com | New revision or updated somehow?

Hi guys,
now the Nexus 6 is available again on Motorola.com after a long time i wonder, if the devices of this batch maybe have a new hardware revision. I am thinking about new batteries, new adhesive for the backplate etc. as examples.
Would be interesting to know if Motorola has reacted on the production/quality problems some users had with their device...
The long delay between the availability of the phone makes me think that. It was out of stock for more than one month at Motorola´s web store. One month for tweaking some things, maybe..??
Doubt it.
wasnt out of stock in tbe US that long, has been available through Motorola for some time now.

Everytime I checked the 64gb nexus 6 was not available on Motorola website for a very long time - several weeks.
I finally ordered one and it is now sitting at fedex waiting on the snow to clear out and I have to sit here waiting on it.
Mine is one of the new ones that will make my breakfast every morning and do my daily exercises for me. You folks that bought the previous version are out of luck! Although I am sitting here wondering if I should have opted for the mate 7, which makes breakfast & lunch.

Is this phone still worth buying in Feb/March?

my old galaxy S3 stopped working, so I am thinking about getting this phone this month or early next month. Should I buy the 3t, or wait for the 4(5)? Thanks in advance.

Based on your requirement...3T is definitely a good phone and you can even sell and buy a 4/5 once it releases
Of course it is. Is the best smartphone right now.
had an lg g3 that stopped recognising the sim card. replacing the sim/sd card reader may not fix it. I dont want to waste money. wainting for enough people to vote in order to make a decision. dont mind me
i just bought my op3t coming from a nexus 6p
If you desperately needs a new phone...get the 3/T either one is a great option.
If you can wait, wait. All the new phones are coming out, including OnePlus.
Mine just got delivered today. On a whim, I decided to sell my Nexus 6P last Friday and ordered a 128gb 3T on Saturday. The 6P was a good phone, but 1.5 years old and due to be orphaned by Google in Sept. I needed to sell soon while the 6P still had some resale value, and the 3T beats the Pixel specs in all the ways that matter to me, so that's what brought me over. The 3T is one of the most powerful phones currently on the market (if not THE most powerful phone). They shaved a few corners (speakers and screen resolution come to mind, but screen is still very good), but the processor+ram are an awesome combo. The 3T isn't certified for Google Daydream so if that's important to you take it into consideration. Since your S3 is busted I assume you have a spare that will tide you over? If so, then maybe wait it out a couple of months. If not (or if the spare is garbage) then the 3T is a great phone with superior specs.
I believe that it completely makes sense to buy this phone.
Firstly, it has only been 4 months since this phone was released. And 4 months is the perfect time to evaluate how good the phone is, while it's still considered a newly released phone.
Besides, I don't think there'll be any great change in tech between the 3t and 4/5. It'll just be a slightly better version of the 3t, with slightly faster processor, slightly higher RAM (maybe).
Because of the very low prices, OnePlus isn't very great with their R/D. All their previous phones reflect that. They have always picked a safe design and put good hardware in it.
I think that once phones like iPhone 8 are released, the innovations they come up with become a thing. Like wireless charging?, Fingerprint scanner embedded in three screen?.
Till then, I think the 3t will be a great phone without anything lacking in it.
Given you'll have to wait for the 4/5, and also, you don't know how it'll turn out to be, my suggestion would be to go for the 3t.

The reason is that it's a proven phone. Good spec, good battery life, god design and awesome charge capacity. You can always wait because there will always be better phones coming but not all phones will be value for money like 3t. Just got it 3 days back.
For y pay for a OnePlus 3 or 3T and the spec you get... I really don't understand why anyone would not buy one. TBH I don't understand why anyone would pay the premium for a 3T when you can pick-up a 3 for less and the spec difference is so minimal. But that's just my opinion
