[Q] Z1 screen scratching and camera - Xperia Z1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hello xda , :fingers-crossed:
i wanna buy a new phone and iam admiring the xperia z1 , but iam a little anxious about some things , one of them is the screen as it is not Ghorilla Glass , i had a samsung galaxy s2 and it was really resistant against scratches , so i dont want to pay lots of money on a phone which could be scratched so easily.
so i just wanted to ask people here who already have the Z1 about their experience with that phone's screen and their overall rating to the phone and its camera, cause i've read many posts that the camera wasn't like what they expected
thanks in advance

Check out Glass-M. They make a tempered glass screen protector for the z1 for like 17USD, mines in the mail. I always put a screen protector as soon as possible, even a 5$ urethane protector can easily stop a scratch that would be ridiculously expensive to repair. Gorilla glass wont save you. Stock glass feels better then urethane, but i can always replace a damaged screen protector.
The camera is usually covered by a sapphire lens i believe, which is much harder then the glass screen and doesn't need to be protected. Just keep your diamonds in a different pocket and you wont scratch it.

My advice, get a screen protector for it before you take it out of the box. Mine was scratched after 2 days, compared to all the other phones I've had (HTC One, SGN, SGSIII etc) I have never had a scratch on the screen. The glass itself is tough, it's just the anti shatter film they put over the top of it which scratches easily. It's like having a cheap screen protector on but they say you void your warranty if you pull it off to replace it once it's scratched.
Go with a tempered glass one. I love the phone, just not the cheap film they put over it.

thanks for your fast response guys
Is this Tempered Glass projected to being scratched and i'll need to replace it several times ? or it is a scratch-resistant glass which will act like gorilla glass maybe ?
and is the camera worth it ? one of my main reasons of choosing that phone is its camera , but i've read many posts which say that camera sucks , and another posts which say that camera is great !! anybody here has any actual experience with this camera ?!

no one has tried z1 or has faced what iam telling or what :crying:

The camera is good, just not mind blowing. If you take picture in good light pictures will be fine. In the end its still a small sensor and will not replace my full frame camera. The Glass-m is made of gorilla glass and is pretty tough. The reason for putting one on as soon as you get it is due the anti shatter film sony insists on putting on. This ASF scratches very easily

You don't need screenprotector for this phone, bcuz i think it has gorilla glass. I've been using this phone for 8 months now, but still no scratches.

Sent From,
PHONE: LG Optimus Black P970
ROM: Zeus v3.2N
KERNEL: Diana v0
ClockworkMod.
I bought and a couple of times they have saved my screen , I bought them on ebay on Italian sites, you must be careful to have this form, look at pictures in the link ,there are different types ,with few cutters are better.
I have to agree that there very few situations where screen protector will help at all.
Only if you actually grinding the screen on sand or metal edges there will be use.
In reality a silicon or TPE bumper will give you much better protection.
I mean the gorilla glass really WORKS on this phone, being so lightweight there is hardly any pressure when you put out down. Off out falls from high enough nothing will save it.
I only have couple of little scratches and they are self inflicted (cutter knife ) to see the actual force that starts to make visible damage.
P.s. And not to sound out of idea i actually had couple of protectors. One was utter rubbish and peeled within a week. The other was good, stuck alright and was hard (ish) enough but there was some obvious loss of sensitivity of the screen - more often undetected button touch, wrong button etc.
So ended taking it of.
I prefer some (possible) scratches but responsive screen and less reflection and natural colours.
I've been using on my phone a Clear screen protector for a month,
But the problem is that the screen protector isn't smooth and it's hard to slip the finger on this screen protector.
Therefore, I've purchased a matte screen protector, once I'll receive it, I will write a review about it, but I've already seen it, and it's so smooth.
I used to have a nice 20+€ screen protector on the phone for about two or three months, then it lost the touch after it gained a few scratches so I took it off and was going to buy a new one.. that was more than 3 months ago and still haven't needed a protector for my screen, over 3 months "unprotected" no bag no silicon, nothing and still 0 scratches. one doesn't really need a protector with this screen.
I had my phone since 1 month, it got some hardly noticeable scratches :S
It sucks... I have to get a screen protector now..
Got a screen protector with a silicon case from ebay for a few euros and the protector is already on it for 6 months and seems to be glued onto it (so excellent one) and the silicon case saved my phone a few times already from being seriously scratched or broken. Worth the few euros for sure, especially if you want to sell it one day (now it is still as new)!!!
I use screen protector. I bought 5 for a bunch of euros. Even with Gorila Glass it's never to much protection
I think we don't need any screen protector.. gorilla glass is too good on our black.. you can see many videos in youtube about gorilla glass durability
Been using 3$ anti-glare for all this time
So far so good

Anyone have tried the invisible shield full protection ?
I....use invisible shield.....from ZAGG.The screen protector is not so good. Its litle "sticky"wnen toy touch him.The all telephone is like "fake"on toch. But protetion is realy amazing..
after i read this thread, took out my screen protector form OB. Now my device looks as good as new. Forgotten how beautiful the screen is without screen protector on it.
Personally I like a anti fingerprint screen protector on my OB... I know gorilla glass is very nice and strong. but I hate it to be super smooth resulting in super sensitive touch. With a screen protector it is not so smooth and I can do some pin point accuracy on the touch screen.
i recomented this...:

No matter what CPU and other specs your phone have you will always look at the screen and I want the best of it. For that reason I'll rather take the risk of taking extra care of the naked screen than even a 5% compromise of screen clarity due to the screen protector. What's the point of the IPS technology if the cover will reduce it to normal LCD or Pentile quality.

Did you apply a protection film?

did you apply a protection film?
I didn`t and I can see some small scratches on my device...
also, can you suggest me a good protection film for xperia z?
There Is a pre installed shatter proof film.

but it gets very easily scratched :S
I already had a few small scratches
I suggest you try one of the various cheap hard plastic screen protectors that are available. This cost only a few dollars so you can change them once every one or two months. That's what I do with my Note II
I think the point wawyed was making was your device is not scratched, the pre-installed film is.
There are quite a few threads on this exact topic already.... you can remove the pre-installed film if you wish - but you may loose your Sony logo. There are a few good replacement films out there (Spigen)
Bottom line: remove the stock film and replace, or leave the stock film - and put yet another one on top of it.

I read some informations on the net, but I` think the pre-installed one is a different kind of film
I was thinking about using a normal film over the pre-installed one

I had applied 3M Vikuiti ADQC27 to Xperia Arc S, S, T, TX and I ordered one more set for tomorrow when I get XZ. I was very pleased with this screen protector, but tomorrow I'll decide on which one to apply them: 3M or the 2 that come in the package (I ordered extra package with dockingstation, smartTags and screen protector). And yes, I put it over the preinstalled one :good:.
Where did you ordered the extra package?
get a set of these and be done with it!

The back of my phone has a couple of hairline scratches - I presume it's because of the bolts near my jeans' pocket. But the screen is fine so far. :victory:
Do you think that will be available a screen protector like the anti-shatter film that Sony put on the phone? It's scratching very easy and I'm thinking that if something similar will be available then I will remove the one from Sony and put that one. On other Xperia phones is available this kind of screen protector?

I think the chance of that happening is 1%, but I am surprised that companies haven't brought screen protectors with the sony logo/text.
Also a thing Sony could do is to bring out a services to re-apply the anti shatter sheet for us, specially since it scratches so easy.
Anyways, the reason why I don't see it happening is because the anti shatter sheet is being applied by a device, it needs to fit perfectly or it might lose it's function. Screen protectors can be applied by men, because it's only there to protect the device from scratches and such, not to stop the screen from shattering, even though normal screen protectors also do that, but on a smaller scale.
1. There is no screen protector with Sony logo because of patent / copy rights. It would be very expensive to get the right to use the logo.
2. Sony already offers the service to replace the anti shatter film. Costs about 20 bucks
Gesendet von meinem GT-I9100 mit Tapatalk 2
20 bucks is not much but I think is not ok to charge me that money for a piece of anti shatter film that scratches very very easily, I've put an cheap film and I will look for a better one in the future to preserve this anti shatter , but extremely scratching film from Sony. That's a huge minus for them. A gorilla glass would be a perfect solution, too bad that Sony didn't think of that. But I still love the phone
I'd prefer to completely remove the anti shatter film, but something is still holding me back. Maybe it's because I payed some hard earned money for that thing, whatever don't wanna argue about that here.
I did not put any other protection film on my XZ. I think it's odd to have two on you display and to be honest there is nothing compared to real glass. the feeling is way better... still don't wanna argue 'bout that.
so I have no protection on my display and I do not use a case... "this guy is an idiot" ...I will buy one soon; I promise. For now I use a little bag where I used to keep my sunglasses. Btw Krussel has some nice covers. "get to the point dude!" ...I keep my XZ in a sidepocket of my jacket and there is nothing else in that pocket and stil I got a few scratches on my display. It does not bother me at all. You have to look very closely to see them. What I am trying to say is that the anti shatter film scratches very easy and as far as I remeber there is gorilla glas underneath... so close, yet so far. I can live with that... for now. Someday I will take it off anyway. I just love my plain black XZ without any logos. LOL, I used to put a little piece of dark tape on my old s2, just to cover up the logo.

Dissapointed in Sony camera, what should I switch to?

Hi, not sure if its the right place to ask, but why not
I have bought my Z3C back in February, new, from the shop. I upgraded from Sony Acro S.
The only reason I did that is that lens cover got all smudged and scratched, so photo were blurry.
I got z3 compact, I did, and still think it very nice phone. Battery life is amazing, I love the size of it. But same as with Acro S, lens cover is once again getting weird smudges.
http://imgur.com/oHg6ZDj
If there is any light source, pictures are bad, and I do need camera to take normal pictures. And I did read the thread about it, and that I can try toothpaste etc, but I wont do this I might take it back to the shop and they will replace the back cover, but will help for another few months? And I did have camera lens protector (that is made for LG phones) but it doesn't help with picture quality.
So my question is - with what would you replace it? I love the size of the phone and it has to tolerate humidity, rain, some water. Is there anything that could compare to z3c in these regards and have a decent lens protection? Samsung S5? S6 active is not to my liking (too rugged )
How about Z5C does it have the same same problem?
Sorry for long post and thank you very much for the advice.
Coating wears off too easily yes. Z5c?
There arent many phones with the specs you're looking for. I fear they all start with a z.

I thought so :/ I am afraid that if I will get Z5C it will be same story like the last two Sony's I had.
This is sad. Will get them to change the back cover and then I suppose I will have to do like I did with this z3c. Buy a screen protector, place it on the back of the phone, and peal it every time I am taking a picture and look stupid while doing so.
have had mine since last year's release. with a thin case, the lens has been protected. why not use one?
Niilkin tempered glass comes with a lens and back protector too... Why don't u check it out
Sent from my D5833 using XDA Free mobile app
I did use Nillkin glass protector, it did shatter (started at the corner) but it was good.
But thats not the problem, lens is already bad. Protector wont help now. And its not the scratches, lens is not scratched, it looks like it from humidity or something, that weird stuff its between the plastic and coating
So I am not sure it will protect it. Like I said I had a lens protector, it did not help, it helped in a way that lens is not scratched, but its unusable anyway.
I cant be bothered taking my phone for repairs ever few months, that takes 2 weeks to do and its a huge inconvenience. So my plan is to fix this. And sell it, buy a new that doesnt have bad coating, lens protection.
The question is what? S5? Wait for someone to confirm that Z5C has proper protection on lens?
I believe the reason the coating comes off is due to the constant exposure to liquid, why not just send it to Sony to repair
I don't know what your old lens protector was made of, but once you get your scratches fixed or replaced, just use the clear film back protector from xtremeguardz. It covers the lens and wont shatter. Plus, with the discount codes they often run, it costs next to nothing, so buy 3 and replace when they inevitably peel or turn yellowish.
I've been using mine for months and it hasn't affected picture quality one bit.

Glass durability and use of phone after a crack?

Alright, So I am coming from a Sony z3c. I loved the phone, honestly, amazing phone. But after having to replace the glass almost 10 times over the last 2 years. I do have questions.
I see that the phone uses Gorilla glass. How durable is this? I have a tendency to be rough on phones. Even if they are in my pocket. So what are the chances of the glass breaking from standard use or a drop from say 3ft?
If the glass cracks, will I still be able to use the phone? Or is the touch sensor completely integrated with the glass?
Basically, how durable is the glass. And will I still be able to fully use my phone while I wait for replacement parts?
I suggest you search for some drop tests on youtube. What I can tell you is that the touch panel is stuck to the glass panel, and although it might still work after a crack (depending on how bad the crack is), you will always need to replace both, instead of just the glass. I think it costs around 90 dollars/euros for oneplus to replace it. Doesn't oneplus "offer" some accident protection plan (optional buy) when purchasing the phone? Look into that.
One very expensive habit you have there. :silly: I too come the Z3 and then Z3+ never cracked the screen once but I always had them in a case and a tempered glass front. But talking about this 3T I would say it would be more durable for back pockets due to aluminium build but may have slightly less shock damping factor. I would invest in a quality case that you like to protect the corners and edges. The build quality to me is superior to Sony's "sandwich" and the camera should not scratch easily. Look up jerryrig everything on YouTube he has a video on the OP3 & T.
Thank you for the replies guys, I will check the youtube suggestions out. I have always used a premium case and screen protectors. But yes, I think I am just cursed with phones.

Accessories Which screen protector do you use ?

Hi everyone
so far I can't find proper screen protector for my mi 11. I tried 3 different brands for tempered glass and all of them are the same:
not bent enough on the edges
fingerprint issues
back gesture don't work most of the time
adhesive is sooooooo weak
touch sensitivity issues
I'm looking for tempered glass options since I drop my phone a lot
if you have experience with good screen protectors please share
I would advise you not to use one. The tempered glass will in no case protect you display when it falls. The fact that the tempered glass breaks when a device falls, doesn't mean that without it the damage to be on the display itself. Tempered glass is pretty fragile and breaks very easily. So a slight fall will already break it where you display will not.
The Mi11 as Victus glass and is a perfect balance between scratch resistance and protection against ballistic impact (like a fall). During a live stream when the Mi11 was introduced in my country we dropped the device like 4 times on the ground while standing on a table.
My Mi11 came with factory foil protector which I removed after a week or two. The colors are always a bit less with the foil or glass on it. And the display is one of the main reasons to get this device, so it's a waste to put something on it.
Just use a skin or a case if you want to prevent some damage to the device directly but I would really not put a tempered glass or anything else on the display.
Edit: otherwise, if you really really want it; go with the aqua gel layers. They will always perfectly fit, add some extra scratch protection to your device (but less then the actual screen itself). You will still have less speed with the fingerprint and the colors will be a bit less too but that is with every layer you put on it. Again, wouldn't recommend.

I had s7 edge before and I had to give up the screen protector because of the curved edges and gorilla glass got destroyed. I know it is not harder or tougher but it can take some beats away from the gorilla glass and it is cheaply replaceable unlike the gorilla glass.
Is the hydrogel smooth enough ?, how do you compare it to the phone glass and pre-applied screen protector

Why not? I payed 750€ for the phone so 80$ is completely ok for a really good screen protector. But I will do exactly the same as @qvert . I will use the one that came with the device until it gets ****t and than just use it without..
I bet that some people will not even know that Mi 11 comes with screen protector pre applied
I'm using hydrogel flex covers....

Well, like I said: I wouldn't really recommend that either but it's smooth enough. Had one on myt Mi9T Pro for a while but I removed it and the fingerprint scanner went from mediocre to pretty okay.
And again, the ballistic impact of a fall cannot really be absorbed by a screen protector, glass, gel or whatever. So damage prevention for that situation is not really happening. But if you still want it, I would go for something like this:

Glass is glass , and glass can break. No matter if it's victus or not , if it hits the right angle it will break. Unless you are a super careful person , i would not recommend using without a screen protector. For me it's a must , i tried using my RM5G without protection and broke it in less than 3 months.
