Hi
I know what I like about this handset.
What I want to know [as being more informative to me] what is not to like about this one.
I'm planning to buy it with contract and use it for another 2 years.
So I'm asking for opinion of these of you that don't change phones every quarter and think about annoyances in long shot.
My highlights:
Most worrying info I have found about this handset is:
A) music reproduction is poor [as on gsmarena] - is there any other review that uses synthetic test? [I use phone to listen to a music for 5h a day]
B) no notification LED - never had phone without it, how big pain is it? [I know about noLED app, it MAY drain battery]
C) fairly often on holidays I take film shoots of people, is rubbish focus still an issue or was it fixed, or is fixed with custom ROM [I'll head to andro development once I'll finish this post ]
Handset will be bought in UK.
thanks for any info
please keep your post as negative as possible )))
this post'd better be in the general discussion session if you want good responses. Otherwise dont hold your breath because this phone is apparently not selling well at all, so no point putting it here.
Hey,
About the music, I think there is nothing wrong with it. I think it depends more on your headset. And dsp manager helps a lot .
About camera, it's an excellent camera in good light and in bad light it isn't that bad only there is some noise in pictures taken in bad light condition.
Hope this helps.

Have you tried even switching to video recording mode in partly lit room? Room is good enough to read but not good enough for this crap phone to record video.

There's no custom Roms. Bootloader is locked and no way to unlock it. Battery life is not that good. Phone gets hot. If the first two get fixed at any time, the last will most likely be fixed by custom Roms.
Notification via key LED works quite well.

I can imagine that LED that lit soft buttons is being used by noLED application - smart if true. Why "quite well" not "very well" ?
I realize that putting question about sound Q in poll is subjective, but I keep in mind gsmarena results too.
Yes I went to 'development' and noticed that there is no custom ROM, but also this is fairly new phone... anyway I'm on PAYG for next 3 or 7 or 11 weeks and waiting for better news about LG or better price of S3 [17.50pm vs 22.50pm on mobiles]
I have also read that all phones get hot to some extent

It's not the NoLed app, but there's the LG Notification app linked in the Themes & Apps section. As you guessed right it uses the LED that lights the buttons. Can be set up to different events and blinking frequencies and stuff, it takes a while to set it up. That's why i wrote "quite well". It's not out-of-the-box, but if you set it right, it works "very well", at least for me. Of course it can only do what the LED supports, so it's only white light and no fading.
Is the video focus issue solved with an update? I didn't see it on lists of the changes on the updates, maybe i missed it. With which update was it solved?
I am most upset by the sound quality of the phone speaker as it is at the back of the phone so miss a lot of incoming calls if you put you phone in your pocket even though volumn set to highest!. It sucks when you use the speaker phone during a call. Same problem for the the alarm, it is not loud enough unless you place it with the back facing up

There is a way to unlock the bootloader, we just havent figured it out yet. There might even be a solution before the end of september.

I dont know about this stuff either, but i read about this app that unlocks the bootloader on verizon galaxy s3. If there is any way to do this for our phone, it would be awesome.
Damn xda won't let me post links, but check "VZW GS3 EZ-Unlock" on google play.
I just now figured out it cannot do USB-OTG although all other new phones can. Dealbreaker!
VOIP / SIP is cut away although it is standard in ICS. Thanks LG!
Touchscreen does not work well under extreme situations / when capacitively loaded (cold wind, charger connected, litte moisture, etc.)
Although the GNSS chipset can do GLONASS it is switched off can only do GPS. Thanks LG!
When videochatting on SKYPE ( if it runs properly at all ) and charger is connected, still the battery drains ! The charger is not able to supply enough power when the whole system is running at max consumption. WTF ? Absolute no go ! Another Dealbreaker !
No open Bootloader! I did not know this. I'm new to android. I thought that rooting is everything. Crap...
Well meanwhile I have had the phone for 2 months, most probably I will not sell it back. I hope the bootloader is somehow opened and there will be a better ROM..
After using the Nexus 4 for 24 hours, I have found I have two gripes with this phone. The first is there is no audible alert if you receive a text message while on a call. In other words, if someone sends you a text message while you are on a call, you will not be made aware of it until you turn on the screen and look at it. The other gripe I have is the call waiting beep is almost completely inaudible, and the second beep sometimes doesn't even occur. In other words, if you are on a phone call, and a second call comes in, you most likely will not know about it and thus will not be know to answer the call. Today I have missed several phone calls because I was on the phone and a call waiting beep could not be heard. As an experiment, I got on a call and then called my phone from a third phone just to hear the volume of the call waiting beep...it is so low it may as well not be there. To make matters worse, after the first beep, the second beep takes so long to occur, your voicemail may likely pick it up either right before or right after the second beep occurs.
Software, not nexus 4 issue. I'm sure there's an app or will be implemented into ROM to solve your problem.

The software comes stock on the Nexus 4 thus it is a Nexus 4 issue. Not being alerted to a second call isn't something that can be easily excused with, "there's an app or will be implemented into a ROM". A person shouldn't need to install apps or hack their phone just so they can know when a second call is coming in...after all it's a smartPHONE..
Sms issue can be solved with a 3rd party Sms app the call beep not so big of an issue to me so that's all I can say.

Maybe not being alerted of calls isn't a big deal to you, but there are some of us that get important calls throughout the day, and not being alerted to them is not acceptable. Call me old-fashioned but I expect a phone to actually be able to handle phone duties, and alerting me to a second call is one of those duties. That's a pretty basic expectation, and a glaring flaw that needs to be corrected.

It's clear I like the phone? I haven't stated how I feel about the phone besides the two issues I have with it. Also, for your information, complaining is how issues get resolved because it brings it more attention. Some of us aren't content with resting on our laurels and accepting the subpar. Furthermore, 3rd party software should not be required just to get simple basic functionality. Instead of excusing shortcomings, you should be demanding a complete device. Also, to be clear, I want to like the phone and want to see it succeed. I have a vested interest in it (which I won't get into publicly), so it actually benefits me for it to be a good phone and do well. That said, if it's falling short somewhere then it needs to be corrected and not just covered up.

It's set to have both an audible alert and vibrate on incoming messages. The problem is, during a phone call, neither of these things happens. There literally is no alert during a phone call other than the icon on the screen. In other words, if you don't happen to be looking at your screen, you will never know you have a text message if you are on a phone call.

I'm sure if this is a common problem on devices, Google will probably update it and fix the problem. You can always contact Google and let them know as well.

First of all, it's not a Nexus 4 issue, it's a 4.2 issue.
Second of all, I doubt Google would remove a feature they have had since...idk 2.2(the first version of Android I had). Try a restore, or mess with the settings...or maybe you're holding it wrong.
Apologies for the rant folks but I need to get this off my chest!

Google needs to fix the Nexus 4 bugs fast
My state-of-the-art Nexus 4 phone has some major issues that aren't just frustrating - they're embarrassing. The camera will often stop working, especially when used in low light or after taking lots of pictures. I was out for a Christmas dinner with friends last night and we asked the waitress to take a picture of the group. I handed her my phone and ended up red-faced because the bloody camera wouldn't work. I also had the camera freeze with the flash still lit up on numerous occasions last night. How the hell did this get through testing? This isn't a one-off - it happens *every* time I try to take lots of pictures. I expect the camera to work.
Can you imagine the furore if the camera on an iPhone did this? People would be foaming at the mouth.
And the camera quality is pretty poor with many shots out of focus and terrible red-eye on others (with no red-eye reduction mode available) and none of the fancy new image filters can fix it. Yet I'm pretty sure ICS had a red-eye reduction filter.
And I also have a WiFi issue which means my connection speed will drop from 40MB to around 2MB for no reason. I have to toggle WiFi off/on to clear it. Rumour is that it's a problem with the WPA2 encryption used by some routers but I have yet to prove this myself and all our other devices are fine, my Nexus 7 included.
And this morning the phone rang and I couldn't answer the call because the buttons on the incoming call screen simply didn't work. It was charging at the time which I expect is the issue but even so...
In my humble opinion Google needs to get a 4.2.2 update out that addresses issues like this quickly because right now I am seriously considering selling this device and getting something else.
I am not your beta-tester Google. This just isn't good enough.

I feel better now. Sorry if this thread sounds a little selfish but I expected so much more from a Nexus device. My 2011 Xperia arc S might of been a bit laggy but at least it was 100% reliable.

Either yours is broken or some crap app is causing the issue.

That's just the price. The actual specs could be considered state of the art.
I'm not sure why the 350 price tag seems to give people a sense of cheapness. This is what a high end phone should sell for. Instead companies **** all over the little people of the world by inflating the price by 300% and lots of times more. Google is merely just sticking it back to those companies and also marketing their ecosystem...

I've had some times where the call and lock screen are unresponsive. Usually there is a home and back button at the bottom for seemingly no reason and I have to hit ”back" to get back to the state where I can use the lock screen.. I'm guessing this is causing the call screen to lose interactivity sometimes as well. I'm suspecting issues related to lock screen widgets/extra functionality/Google Now as none of this used to happen on previous revisions, it seemed to start when that feature set was introduced. I also accidentally bring up the camera from the lock screen which gets annoying, but that's more my fault in the way I pick the phone up sometimes if I "pry" it up when it's sitting against something. Annoying, but whatever.
I have had no camera issues specially yet, though I haven't used it extensively only occasionally.

Was in Switzerland last week and the camera also decided to stop working, flash would stay on, screen wouldn't turn off and it was boiling.
Turned it on and off but during those 2 days happened more then once.
It was embarrassing because I was telling my family how good this phone was but they just laughed at me. Everyone one else has an iPhone even the kids (3 iPads, 4 iPhone, 2 imacs)
So difficult to get one so might sell mine. I want a phone that works and I am not spending my money to do beta tests.
Ps. This is my second one and I we are not even talking about the rattle and the buzzing
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
In regards to all the Nexus 5 chatter going on i thought i would share my thoughts and findings.
Button rattle/click sound-
During production they need to leave cutouts for the power/volume buttons, if too tight, the phones frame wont fit, if too loose, buttons move (my buttons move, ever so slightly, and that's cause I move them). My Nexus 4 buttons make a click sound too (not as loud as the nexus 5), maybe its the ceramic material. Not sure if i should RMA the device over something like buttons (then again i have 1 year to make up my mind)
Screen-
Some ppl say they have yellow tinge to screen, i cant speak for this, mine seems fine, however, one thing i have noticed. The status bar icons do not stay white all the time. While on the home screen they are white, when entering an app like the dialer, they turn off-white (maybe a really light grey). Maybe some users can confirm if its supposed to be like this. If screen yellow, def RMA it!
Speaker-
Ok, this is a big one for alote of users- Mine is pretty much the same as my nexus 4 while on call (much of a muchness really, could just be a matter of perception) BUT, on things like Youtube app etc IT IS softer than my nexus 4. (however my nexus 4 is running Matrix Kernel, and when tweaking the Speaker output in Trickster MOD, i can get that thing as loud or soft as i want) Maybe Google can fix this with a software update on the nexus 5, i don't know.
Mic/hissing in video recording-
This is a big one too- When recording video, there is a slight or big hissing sound in the background (even in quite scenarios),. Sounds like the microphone gain is set too high/sensitive, who knows. Tested it on my nexus 4 (as above) increased the gain, and got the same hissing sound as on my nexus 5. I know this is not the Q&A section, but could this all be fixed with an update? If memory serves, nexus 4 had very similar issues when it came out, with mic/speaker etc.
Call quality-
Much of a muchness with my nexus 4 and 5.
Vibration-
"you can hear it" or "its loud" what?, i did not like the vibration strength in the nexus 4, too weak, nexus 5 is stronger good for me- its all a matter of opinion.
Maybe i cant remember what my nexus 4 was like when it came out of factory- its def better with custom ROM/kernel/apps- but users who are not tech savvy should have this sort of stuff addressed in the nexus 5.
Maybe some of this is just a matter of perception....
PS-This is just my take/opinion, may not be valid for everyone, but just though i would share it with the community.
PPS- from what i have been reading RMA devices still have the same issue(s), regardless if its 310K or 311K- My Nexus 5 is 310K.

ROFL... wth
Hi All,
Got the Z1 last week about 9 dates ago as a replacement for a Samsung Galaxy S3. Generally liking it, though struggling to get used to the size of the handset. One major issue, though that I can't easily sort or find an answer to anywhere.
Basically, when I use a wired headset with inline mic for phone calls, the microphone is way too sensitive. It picks up every movement of the headphone cord, every rustle on my clothes, etc. Tried about 5 different headsets, including a dedicated Android one button Sennheiser headset. All the same. None of these proved a problem with
Anyone any ideas on what's causing it or how to fix it? Is there something simple I'm missing? It's making calls a painful experience.
Thanks in anticipation.

Tried that. No change. S3 better than this? In this respect only. V pleased to see the back of the S3, as it constantly had firmware issues, caused, no doubt. Random battery life issues (sometimes lasting a day, sometimes a few hours), crashes, screen redraw issues, glitchy music playback. I could go on.

I think with Root you can get work anything even the sensitivity of your microphone. It can be easy like edit build.prop that something more but I am sure the sensitivity can be managed. If I find something I will post.
