[Q] Verizon Moto X Developer Edition - Moto X Q&A

I have a developer edition Moto X for verizon that I ordered and unlocked the boot loader on so which recovery do I flash because there dont seem to be any official ones

I have the same Dev edition and I used TWRP 2.6.3, there is a thread in the development section by DHacker. I hope this helps.

To buy or not

Looking to get a moto x, I have a gs4 but I got a warranty replacement and can't unlock boot loader to install a custom ROM. So was looking into a Vzw moto x, my only concern is how long is it gonna take Vzw to get 4.4 on the moto x if it never gets an unlocked boot loader so that we can install custom roms. Any input?

From what I understand the chances of unlocking the bootloader on a Verizon Moto X will not be likely. There is root available for all variants of the Moto X and we are supposed to be getting some sort of bootstrap that will bypass the bootloader and allow us to flash custom roms kind of like Loki on the S4. Also from what I understand rooting and flashing roms on Verizon/ATT devices will become harder as we progress to newer versions of Android due to security and such. As far as when Verizon will release 4.4 for the X, your guess is as good as anyone else's. I would bet it will be before the Verizon S4 gets it though.
All of that aside, I think you would be happy with the Moto X. I know several S4 converts who haven't regretted it for a minute.

[Q] Root VZW developer edition

Hey everybody,
I just got the VZW moto x developer edition from the cyber monday sale. I unlocked the bootloader, and just wanted to confirm how to root. All I need to do is follow the toolkit/pwnmymoto, correct? I wasn't sure if there was a separate process for rooting the dev edition.
Thanks much!
If your bootloader is unlocked why not just install twrp and just flash the supersu zip?

Requirements for flashing a custom ROM on a locked VzW Moto X

Hi, I an debating buying a consumer Moto X on Verizon.
My question is this:
Is it possible to flash a custom ROM with a locked Moto X?
If so, what is required/which ROMs are compatible?
I am familiar with safestrap (coming from the droid RAZR), as well as flashing ROMs in general.
Thanks!

Don't buy a consumer version , there's no safestrap ROMs , also gaining root on 4.4.2 may never happen. I suggest you buy a developer edition and unlock the bootloader.
Unlocking the DE will not void the warranty.

Unfortunately, that is not within my budget. Is it possible to downgrade from 4.4.2 to 4.2.2 and go from there?

No, you can't downgrade from 4.4.2 to any earlier firmware, try swapa for a slightly used one . if root and flashing ROMs and your budget won't allow you to pick up a DE , then maybe the moto x is not for you

[Q] XT1058 to XT1053 (Developper)

Hi,
I got the moto x xt1058, can I flash the developper factory image for the xt1053 so i get the developper edition and get the update faster?
Thank you.
Sure if your bootloader is unlocked. All Moto Xs are technically developer editions, the one difference is the unlock codes will not be provided for the Verizon and AT&T versions.

A few things to consider...
The Developer Edition does NOT get updates faster than any other model X.
The "unlocked ships with XXX Sim" Moto Maker editions are also XT1053 and get the updates at the same time as the Dev Edition XT1053.
Moto seemed to be rotating what model/carrier got the 2013 X updates in the past (going back to the 4.2.2 w/camera OTA, 4.4, 4.4.2 and 4.4.4). Its likely that Moto will continue this pattern.
The XT1058 and XT1053 support different frequencies (mostly LTE), and have different radio/modem files, that could have an impact on you depending on what frequencies your carrier uses.
the CID of the phone wont be changed. There is a chance this may or may not impact installing OTA's.
Your bootloader needs to be unlocked to do this. (You don't mention who your XT1058 is from, and if its bootloader is unlocked.)

Thank you,
The reason I thought it would update faster is because I saw that the new moto X pure edition got update faster than the verizon for example. So I tought it would be the same thing for the moto x 2013 and the xt1053 version is the developper edition.
Thank you

You can't assume that one device (2013 X) will be the same as another (2014 X).
And for the 2013 X, there are TWO Developer Editions. XT1053 and XT1060. They use the same rom as their retail and motomaker counterparts and got their updates at the same time as their retail/motomaker counterparts.
Example: The GSM Dev Edition is the XT1053, but so is the "Unlocked shipps with T-Mobile SIM" version sold on Moto Maker, same with the "Unlocked Ships with Net10 sim" sold on Moto Maker. They all get the updates at the same time.
And The Developer Edition for Verizon is the XT1060, but so is the Moto Maker or Retail 2013 X for Verizon. They all get their updates at the same time.
There was a thread somewhere that listed the order Moto was rolling out the OTA's. It showed each OTA, and which model X got that OTA first. For one OTA it was the XT1060 (Verizon), for another OTA it was ATT (XT1058), for another it was Sprint (XT1056), and so on.
Wouldn't the GSM dev edition get OTAs faster than an At&t or Verizon (including Verizon dev) editions since their updates have carrier bloatware and need carrier approval?

Actually the xt1053 was dead last to receive 4.4.4 and was first to get 4.4.3

Not necessarily. Take 4.4.4, XT1053 was one of the last to get it.
Verizon XT1060 got 4.4.4 in last few days of July.. http://www.droid-life.com/2014/07/2...e-now-available-to-all-here-is-the-changelog/
ATT XT1058 got soak in early august, I can't find when they finally pushed to users -> http://www.androidpolice.com/2014/0...pdate-now-rolling-out-to-soak-testers-on-att/
Sprint got 4.4.4 End of August -> https://community.sprint.com/baw/message/837886#837886
XT1050/Unlocked/T-Mobile/DevEd got soak in end of Sept, but I can't find when it started actually pushing to all users -> http://www.androidpolice.com/2014/0...finally-getting-its-android-4-4-4-ota-update/
