My TL gives an warning says my internal storage is 75% full, but clearly I only used like 10%.
I transferred all my stuff to cloud (I don't have a SD card) and cleared the internal storage. Then it's been good for 2 weeks before the warning came back again. Now I can't even install apps because it says there's no sufficient storage. What is going on?

Well I tried to ignore the notification but that's not a solution. It is a real problem. Now I got an Chrome update but it won't install because "Insufficient Storage".
ok now I've temporarily solved the problem by moving some apps from "phone" to "internal storage" (what does that even mean?)
so is there a "phone" storage separate from "internal storage"?

Well, yes. You have 2GB reserved on your phone (from the 16gb internal) for apps. Then you can move a part of some apps to the internal. Thats why you only have like 10GB on your internal. And not the 16GB as the phone comes with. It also uses that space for apps,rom,...

I see. Can I put more space to the reserved? Like 4GB for apps and 8GB for internal storage?
I found out clearing the cache of Chrome and Google+ frees up a lot of memory.

Ok i have had me Tilt sense day one it came out! and
my question is that when i download cabs, program i save them to my card. when i go to install it and it ask my device or memory card i always put them on memory card! and after its installed i see my device memory get lower am i doing somethig wrong? O and it shows my memory card as storage card 2 when it should be storage card right! could that be the problem? its a 8gb card
I wouldn't worry about the SD card's name, it makes no difference. Depends on how much storage you are loosing when you install. Remember some apps will install shortcut icons onto the device so you can use them for the startmenu, home apps, etc. so you are going to loose a little space, but not alot.
It shows that i have 64968k memory available that's not that bad is it? i think i should have more then that! and im saving everything to the SD card! and i clear my text messages and web cookies like once a week so the phone can run smooth! thanks for the help
Yea, thats low. Have you went through and deleted all the bloat. Meaning sometimes they put tones, pictures, videos, music in My Documents. After flashing a ROM I usually go through My Documents folders and delete all the stuff I don't need. Another quick way to find out what is taking up so much space is to go into Start, Settings, System, click on Memory and down at the bottom click on "FIND" large files using storage memory. You can edit your search preferences there, the files you want to look for are the ones without the file with the storage card icon(those files are on the storage card)

This morning i got a notification that my phone storage space is getting low. I have 12.8 MB free according to the system stats. It seems, though, that my phone thinks I have 0 MB free, as I tried to download something and it said I had no room (the file was a few dozen KB).
I then received a notice that a text had been rejected because my text message memory was full. I went in and did some house cleaning: deleted about 15 threads, some with 150-200 msgs in it. I then tried sending myself a test text, and it still said that my text message memory was full.
Anyone have any idea what's going on, and how to fix it? I'm having terrible flashbacks to my BB Curve when it didn't have a SD card in it.

This is Android's "dirty little secret". All of your apps are stored on your phone's internal storage. If you're on a N1 then you're running 2.2, right?
Go to settings>applications>manage applications> all, click on each app and see if you can move to SD. While you're in there, clear the less important app's cache. Google Earth is a HOG.
You can also root and flash CyanogenMod. Then You'll be able to put all apps on your SD.

I am on 2.2, but most of the apps I have can't be moved to SD because the developer hasn't enabled it.
How much internal storage does the N1 have? I don't have that many large apps on here. Maybe I should uninstall Google Earth, which is a huge hog, you're right.
Empty your browser cache; this is usually enough.
If you're willing to root, there are a few ways to fix this using your SD card.
If it's affecting SMS as well your cache is full.
Not ideal for this to full up before /data - you may need an app like CacheMate to manage it for you.
I had this happen once and it was my SD card that was actually full, not anything on the phone.

Don't put widgets on sd then. That is what Google specifically says not to do. Simple enough. Don't put anything on sd that has to continuously run, services, live wallpapers, widgets.
having the same problem, all my caches are empty though. it said it had to reject a text due to lack of memory. now that i have freed up some (at 32mb free atm) it still doesn't receive the text.
this is a major downside on android's part.

I have something over 100 apps on my phone, not Gapps, just downloaded stuff. If I'm reading it right titanium backup backs up over 200. I have a 16 GB sd card and I'm using CM6 which allows me to put whatever apps on my SD I want. Other ROMs let you do this as well, or you can root and move all your apps to SD. I just personally like CM6. Be careful though, I've noticed that some apps that get moved don't work or strangely disappear. especially if they have a widget. There is a link to the one click app in my signature below. It's called universal androot.
Good luck.
I am rooted as well and using CM6, most of my apps are loaded on my16 gig card, however some of them won't let me load to my card (slingbox, etc). I was just wondering if there is a way to access my internal memory to see if there were some things I could delete that I didn't need anymore. Any help would be appreciated

My advise: Just root using Androidroot (1click-root) and after that search in Xda for setinstalllocation, download and install it and move all your apps to the sd-card (don't move widgets, autostart apps, root apps? or services). Did that last week and get back almost 40 mb in internal storage.
While you are doing it suggest you install from the market cachmate for root - it will be your day-a-day friend.
Best of all if i'm correct, you will Keep your warranty ok since you don't unlock your bootloader

How? I have been searching for solution after installing cutom Rom and now I have 3.6mb memory on my sensation after clearing all cache, data in apps. Please helpif you can as I cannot find specific answer and I cannot post to development pages I got the Rom.
Noob here. Noob on XDA anyway. I've owned by Nexus One for over two years now and I've been pretty happy with it. However, I am finally running out of internal memory, even after moving all the apps I could to flash.
Actually, it's mostly TMobile's crappy voicemail app's fault that I am here. If there is less than 10% of space on the device, it flips out and won't download voicemails any longer, which is horrible.
So, here I am today, I just rooted my phone and using posts like this one, I am figuring out how I can force some of those greedy apps onto my sdcard to free up some space. I will probably go with a custom rom here too soon, since there will no longer be updates for the Nexus One.
I know there are much much better phones out now, but this thing works and has been very good.

I'm not sure how this works on the sensation, but try this.
Since you already have a custom ROM, I'm assuming your phone has been rooted. In that case, install darktremor's a2sd script. You'll have to create and ext3 or ext4 partition on your sd card, and then the script will automatically move some apps to the ext partition freeing up space on your phones data partition.

The same goes for you.
I can't post the link for the script, but just search the forums or google for dta2sd and you'll find it.
To create an ext partition, I would recommend using 4ext recovery.
Hope this helps.

Hello everyone, I'm using SGS I9000, with Darky's V10.1 ROM. I recently discovered that my memory space have become extremely low, System Storage has only 1.53GB Storage available space. However, there is a category called USB Storage, where a total space of 13.43GB, with 11.53GB available. I have no external SD card inserted.
So i go to memory usage area, and i try to shift some apps to the "usb storage", apps like angry birds, adobe reader etc, but it gives me this error message "Failed to move application. Not enough memory."
Anyone know what's wrong with my phone?

you have 2 SD in your SGS, one internal and one external
The problem is, i don't have 2 SD in my SGS right now. There's only the internal one, and there is no external sd card inserted in my phone. How can it be possible that my internal memory space has only 1.53GB space left when i don't have much stuffs installed at all?
i9000 has 3 different storages Eg : 16GB
2GB - Phone Storage (ROM)
14GB - Internal SD (Internal Storage)
XGB - External SD (renamed to USB Storage)
Normally the applications are installed in Phone Storage. Don't know why cannot move to "Internal Storage". Only can move to "USB Storage".
Thanks for the clarification, does that mean the internal SD is totally useless? Or just for you to store music/pictures ETC?
I have the same problem: my phone has the orange sd card on the slide down menu which say "internal memory full"
I have no apps other then a timer, a virusscanner and whatsapp and then all the apps that come with the phone. All the files I have on the phone I have stored on the external SD.
I deleted all my sms messages, whatsapp chats and I even uninstalled whatsapp to make sure that it's not that, but it still says my internal memory is full.
When I look at the apps, Thinkfree is the biggest program on it with 9mb, followed by Adobe Reader with 8mb.
What can be done? I have this phone for not even 6 months now and I'm ready to brick the phone but by this I mean: throw a f*cking brick on it!
Why does my Captivate only limit me to having 2GB of space for apps? I'm not using an external SD card and I want to install my apps onto my internal SD card or atleast move them there.
It's been a while since I have been on a stock ROM so please correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe you can move at least some of the apps by going to settings / applications and then, in the individual application settings, select "Move to SD."
I know you can't move widgets or alarm applications because they will break if they aren't on internal memory, but you should be able to move games, etc. with no problem.
Move to SD was not available on Eclair... what are you running?

Ah, now I understand. I never had enough apps on Froyo to play with moving them but shooting from the hip, have you tried removing your external card and see if it will let you move them then? If not, I know that there are apps2sd applications on the market that should help you, but I haven't used any of them to give you a recommendation.

I've used all of those methods and none work.
Did you find solution? I have same situation here, it's pretty weird internal SD could only be stored with application data instead of application itself.
I'm almost positive that you can't move apps to your "internal SD card" regardless of whether or not you have an external sd card installed.
My understanding is that you can only move apps to the external SD card (at least that's how it's been on any ROM I've ever used)
why... Why! WHY!!! . . . oh >.>

Why you ask...
Well simple, your limited to only 2GB because this size was choosen by phone manufacturors years ago when they were first designing the phone.
Consider that most of the phones in use back when 2.2 was released did not, for the full storage potential, even have the 2GB that we have just for apps (16GB in total). Heck most did not even have 1GB (I think 512MB was the standard). There was no separation between app storage and other media. This lead to users running out of space for both rather quickly. The solution then was to find use for the external SD as it could be as large as 32GB of storage.
The whole "internal SD" thing was thought up because it seemed wise to separate app storage from media storage. Also back when 2.2 was first released we did not have such massive apps as on the market today, so 2GB was plenty of any and all user (excluding the ppl who felt a need to have 200+ user apps...)
So, you can't store apps to the "internal SD" because that's not what it is meant to be used for. When companies decided to start putting such massive storage into the phone there was no reason for it to be any bigger.
As to only being able to move apps to the external SD, simple; Google did not design Android to do so.
To allow such would require changing how Android sees the "Internal SD" and to change how the app to SD function works, it is not currently written to check for multiple SD cards. I don't see any Dev willing to take up the task when the solution to running out of app space has already been solved by a much better means.
A different way to view the problem would be to ask (or learn, as that's the xda way) about re-sizing the partition to make the app storage larger. If enough people ask (politely!) maybe one of the Devs can be convinced to make it standard in their ROM that it be more then the default 2GB, or someone might make an app or flashable .zip that allows for re-sizing.
lt:dr - phone is old, based on old specs (think pre- 2.1 Android).
I was having issues with my phone and accidentally deleted some system apps so I restored my phone using the fastboot files and cleared my internal SD card storage. Upon reboot (with no apps installed), there is only 2.88GB of application storage available.
If I remember correctly, 8GB is allocated to the internal SD card. Does that mean 8GB goes to application storage? If so, where is my other 5GB?
2.88 for Apps, 8 for internal, and the rest(no more than like 4 gig) for the OS if IIRC.
The OS takes up that much space?
Your internal storage is divided up in to three separate sections...
Apps (your app storage), Media Storage (this is actually like extended app storage or Apps2SD) and SDcard. Not sure the split but I think 8 for apps and media storage (split there however) and the other 8 for /sdcard.
An external SDCARD added would be /sdcard-ext
OS space is never listed as part of a phone's available storage so the 16 GB is has is dedicated to Apps/Media Storage/SDcard

Total Phone Storage
Total Space 16.00GB
Application Storage
Available Space 2.73GB
Internal Media Storage
Available Space 8.00GB
Windows Media Sync
Windows Media Sync Storage Internal Storage (8.00GB/8.00GB)
The phone is stock with no updates/market apps. No pics, music, etc (Was backed up and formatted). I should still see 5.27GB somewhere right?
This summed it up pretty well for me. I think I answered my own question. This is exactly what my phone shows.

Awesome, thank you. I don't know why Motorola does that. They should advertise the amount of space that I can use, not how much is in the phone.
They inflate the phone's storage capacity to fool you into buying it, thinking you're really getting that much. It's an old trick.

Repartition the phone and flash with custom OS and you can use all that space, right?
Yea, that's probably why Moto Mobility is going down under.
I think a custom OS takes up space from your media partition.
