Just got my Nexus 4 last week (only took 3 days from when I ordered, rather impressed).....but I have to say, the FFC is pretty terrible. Not just the picture quality (I wasn't expecting much from a 1.3mp FFC) but its performance in general....movement is very choppy, and its performance in video chats (using Google Talk or Tango) is rather poor. In fact in Google Talk, there is an excessive amount of random garbled nonsense audible on both ends of the conversation (not the cameras fault I'd assume). The FFC on my last phone, a MyTouch 4G, was honestly better than this one which is really disappointing as I was hoping the beefier stats of this phone would finally allow for a comparable video chat experience to Apple's FaceTime, which as much as I hate to admit, is light years ahead of anything I've seen for Android.
Correct me if I'm wrong here, or if there is a really great app for this that I just haven't found yet....any opinions?
Even the back camera is bad. Better than last year's galaxy nexus crappy camera but still bad compared to good camera on other high end smartphones.

I have yet to see a really good front camera, but not a big deal imo, there good enough for webcam purposes so that's good enough for me.

Jesus Christ, why did u buy this phone then?
If you want a good camera on a phone just buy an iPhone or s3
There's loads of reviews on the nexus camera and they all tell you its not impressive, yet you still bought it
Or if you really care about taking photos, go buy a DSLR

To be honest all the phones I've owned I've NEVER really used the FFC. Actually that's a lie. I did a video chat with my GF once on gtalk but it was just to test it. So for all I care the FFC can be 0.001 MP hahhaa

In general, I agree....I was just surprised that the Nexus 4 FFC performs so poorly compared to a 2+ year old phone (mytouch 4G). Not the end of the world....I still love the phone and don't regret purchasing it.
I knew the rear camera wasn't going to be great (read the reviews, trust me) and its not. I'm more surprised with the connection quality and "smoothness" (if that makes sense) of the FFC. Also after seeing so many of my friends with iPhones and FaceTime, I'm just wondering how it can be that it seems no android phone has really nailed this (unless the SGS3 has, haven't tried it there).
Yeah the FFC isn't impressive. My Gnex's front facing camera performs MUCH better somehow. BUT, I really like the rear camera. I'm a photographer and I just know how to take really good shots (Not to sound weird )
honestly the FFC on my tmobile GS2 was pretty decent. this one does kinda suck tho

the Front camera isn't bad photo wise I turn on the HDR (hate the delay)
and pictures come out amazing although the colors would be off I just correct it in snapseed
At first I thought the nexus 4 sucked, I don't know why, but now I use it the most
Once you calibrate the display, there are no negatives
Its hard to get dirty (HTC ones back white strips get dirty/stained)
Its as fast as the HTC one, HTC may be a fraction faster opening apps (transition/animation speeds in account)
I only listen to a select few songs, the other 1000 or so are on Google music if I ever want to listen to them
Its a fantastic display, corner edge viewing angles could be better, 1080p appears smoother and better reading in bed, but the display is too long, I prefer the wider but shorter nexus 4/optimus g. Better for browsing
The camera is really good, despite what people say, I took pictures with my s3, xperia s, HTC one xl, nexus 4, HTC one, its hard to differentiate between the phones. HTC one probably stomps in low light.
At first i thought the speaker sucked, admittedly not as loud and clear as the optimus g, its pretty good and loud, boomsound sounds epic, but its not loud, the optimus g is the loudest clearest speaker i have ever heard (just sayin) the lumia 620 has the loudest but its not very good
All the apps run better, even vs the google edition roms. Like Next browser, its silky smooth on the nexus 4 but jittery on the htc one :/
What can I say, I love this phone. And onscreen buttons are badass, makes the 4.7 inch display easier to use + feels faster then capacitive buttons
Calling the camera "really good" on the Nexus 4 really puts everything you say in question. The camera is the biggest failing of the Nexus 4.
I also thinks the camera is alright, I don't ask for crazy camera thou.
Its a Picture i look at a couplepr seconds and then Swype to the next. It's a phone
Skickat från min Nexus 4 med Tapatalk 4 Beta
About the camera, the picture clarity is better than my friends s3 when I compared after zooming to Max
However I prefer his s3 image quality for more natural colours in it
If you are speaking about speaker loudness, try xperia live with Walkman
And about this post, if u post it in nexus 4 forums, most people who have used or are using nexus 4 will say that its okay
If u post it in HTC one forums, most of them will say you are crazy
Its your choice to choose!
Sent from my nexus 4 themed as wp8
i also think the camera is ok, it is certainly better than the one that was on my Xperia S
Camera is fine.. It has more natural colors than Samsung s3 .
I'm so tired of hearing these crybabies complaining about a shtty camera.. Clearly you are not using it right!
I would say the s4 & One have a better camera . but they are newer & cost twice as much

My Nexus 4 takes very decent quality photos. I couldn't be happier.. Wayy better than my X2-01's photos!

I think you're overreacting a bit. I haven't noticed anybody "crying" here. It's been merely one critical post. Everybody is entitled to his/her own opinion. You don't like it, ignore it. After all that's a discussion board and not a st. nexus temple. People don't have to worship every single part of the phone to use it.
Anyway my opinion is IF you really want a smartphone with top notch camera don't buy nexus. When I bought nexus I expected to get much worse cam to be honest, and I was positively surprised. You can really take some good pics with our camera.
And no offence towards OP but what's the purpose of such threads. I guess we already have at least one comparative topic like that.

Looks like LG G2 is the premium cousin of Nexus 5. With only 2300mah battery, and low spec camera, I am glad I got the G2.
http://www.gsmarena.com/leaked_nexus_5_log_reveals_most_of_the_specs-news-6876.php
Most of the stuff is no surprise – a 5" screen (actually, 4.97") with 1080p resolution, 442ppi pixel density, a Snapdragon 800 chipset with 2GB of RAM and 16GB storage (on that concrete model, there might be others with more and hopefully not less storage). The phone ran Key Lime Pie (a.k.a. Android 4.4 KitKat), build version KRS74H.
It seems that the camera has been changed to an 8MP snapper (the Nexus 4 also got a lower-res camera than the Optimus G it was based on). It's too early to tell if there will be optical image stabilization (probably not though). There's a 1.2MP front-facing camera too.
The Nexus 5 will pack dual-band Wi-Fi a/b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 4.0, NFC and GPS connectivity. The model whose log file leaked ran on North American LTE bands, but we should expect a Euro version too.
Pieces of the leaked log with the salient info
The phone will have wireless charging built in and while battery capacity wasn’t in the logs, FCC docs point to a 2,300mAh unit. There will also be a full set of sensors – accelerometer, magnetometer, gyroscope, proximity and light sensors as well as a barometer. The FCC measured the phone at 131.9mm tall and 68.2 mm wide, there's no info on thickness.
A case maker, SPIGEN, puts the Nexus 5 launch date at October 31, a month from now.
Thanks for the tip, Emanuele!
I spent most of last night snapping pics and a birthday party. After 2 years with my gnexus I realized how nice it is to have a great camera. I don't care that it's 8 mp. But I freaking love ois.

It looks good cause its 13MP camera...
GNex's camera serves me well enough for daily snap. It was nothing to boast about.
What I hated most about the Gnex is the battery life with never ever lasted me the whole day, especially at night when you go out with friends, that is when you want your phone most.

Not true. Megapixels on cell phone cameras don't really mean ****. 8mp or 13mp, its a way higher resolution than it needs to be... No ones printing posters from their cell phone photos. Sensor quality and speed, iso performance, and compression/processing are all much more important. Which is why my 10mp DSLR takes way better photos than my 13mp phone or 16mp point and shoot.
Its still probably very likely that the N5 camera will be worse. But it won't be because of the lower mp sensor. It'll be because Google is going to cut corners wherever they can to get a $300-$400 price tag.

My brother has been in the printing and imaging biz for about 40 years and he says the same things. All those pixels are good for cropping smaller pics from big ones or printing posters but it doesn't help the quality of the image any.

Its 10 mp by default. 13 mp pics are squares. So, my comment on amazing photos are based on 10 mp pics. I'm amazed people still say mps matter. How many times has that theory been crushed. IPhone 5s is 8 mp and it CRUSHES the s4s 13 mp camera.

I agree with you about the battery life. The Galaxy Nexus had absolutely horrible battery life. The Nexus 5 has me interested but I'm still looking at the G2 as an upgrade to my current phone which is a Note 2 mostly because of the battery.
Yeah so true, what is the point of snapdragon 800, and 5"screen of the phone won't last you through out the day.

If people don't buy Nexus devices purely based on price, then they are nuts imo. There are always better phones hardware and specs wise out there that can easily have an AOSP rom flashed to it.
I always buy a phone that suits me the best and then I can always flash an AOSP rom if needed.

Especially with the upcoming Cyanogen CM ROM app coming to the Play Store, will be easy as pie to install the latest CM ROM on your phone, even if your not comfortable rooting, and flashing rom's yourself. Now will be super easy. Just need a phone that has an unlocked bootloader out of the box, and no funny ATT or Verizon lock down on it, which the G2 I think is developer friendly, and is in LG's best interest to gain support from the community, I think LG is in the Android position, like Samsung was back in the Galaxy S2 days a few years ago.

So youre saying youre going to buy one?
Unless the Nexus 5 announcement pulls a ton of surprises, I don't see how it could be a bigger draw to get it over the G2, besides the significantly lowered pricepoint of course.
2 weeks ago, I was in a bit of a dilemma over getting the G2 then or waiting it out for the Nexus. I'm glad I sorted that bit out.
Loving the G2 more with each day!

Is the G2 unlockable? I see there is TWRP and stuff but I don't see any root or custom roms yet. I like the G2 but ain't no way I'm going to be a frontrunner after the G2x burned me.
I'd rather have the N5 with lower specs then the G2 IF LG isn't going to support it.
My 2yr Galaxy Nexus running 4.3 AOKP is plenty fast and absolutely a beast on Battery (stock 2100mAh extended). I'd hate to get rid of it but the OMAP CPU is showing its age. Otherwise the best phone I have ever owned. I'll make a choice in December to see where the G2 and the N5 are. In a perfect world, with the N5 is close in hardware, ROMs could be ported back and forth easily allowing one to have the better spec'd G2 with all the development that comes with a Nexus.

You haven't used any other phone. The gnex is slow and Verizon 4.3 has terrible signal.
Hopefully that 8MP shooter is something like the Exmor R featured in the 5S.

I love CM and AOSP.
At the moment my SGS3 is running Android 4.2.2 CM 10.1. It is now very good but it arrived later then 4.3 stock on my N4.
AOSP 3rd party ROMS will always be at least 6 months behind official Android on Nexus.
Hey all.
I have to s4 and love it. Loads! But I'm thinking about going for the z1.
Camera is good from what I've heard. But is it really that good?
Is it good for fast moving motion? Kids jumping on trampoline and stuff life that.
My s4 is just fantastic on sport pictures. Doesn't blur at all. Also battery life?
Also is the phone any good?
Sorry for all the questions I just want a change and I like this camera I hear on the z1.
How does the phone feel?
Thanks

I love my z1. The camera in great in daylight, but not so great at night unless you use the manual nighttime settings. Is it worth the upgrade is up to you. I never thought the s4 took bad photos. Myself, I'd say no if you are just looking for a better camera. S4 is a great phone. I just think the z1 is a slightly better one. It's my opinion though and I'm entitled to it.
Hmm... Well it's waterproof as well. Which is a big thing for me. I'm always scared to pull my phone out in rain. I love in Wales in the UK We get enough rain lol.

I've purchased a Galaxy S4 for my father and sister and personally own a Note 2. And let me tell you this - the Z1 feels remarkably better than the S4, or any Samsung phone for that matter.
The S4 is great 'n all with very solid hardware, but the Touchwiz UI is what is starting to really bother me. I played with my Z1 for a full day before I was forced to return it (LTE issues with the specific model I purchased) and simply loved it. I love the near vanilla Android experience with Sony's little UI on top. It wasn't as intuitive as Touchwiz, but it was so fluid in what it did that I simply did not care that it didn't have the same things that the S4 has. The only thing I'd say you'd have to consider if the size of the actual phone. While it may have the same amount of screen real estate, it is much larger than the S4. In fact, it's nearly the same size and weight of my Note 2.
So if you don't mind the larger phone (in comparison to the S4), then go for it. The camera and the waterproofing is just an added bonus. The experience of the phone is so great that is simply trumps every other aspect. Everything is just so smooth and fluid that I'm having very little second thoughts about my future purchase. The Note 3 was released today and I love it (I work at Best Buy so I've got unlimited access to it really) but I simply cannot ignore the greatness of the Z1.

The jump from s4 to a z1 isn't that big bro. My GF has the s4, I have the z1, camera is almost the same (but I'm not a professional photographer, just saying). I just gave my S4 to the Mrs after buying the Z1. It's faster, camera is awesome. The timeshift burst is fun and makes for great "auto-awesome" pics on g+.
I've also put it in the sink a few times and use it in the shower.

Hey people. So I've been inactive for quite awhile. I used to be lurking at the Xperia Z and HTC One section. In the past year I've used tons of flagships. Starting with the Xperia Z from the iPhone 5. Soon I moved to the HTC One. Not long after, I moved to the iPhone 5s. Recently, I managed to snag myself a Nexus 5. Been using it for awhile so I'd thought its time to clean the dust off this account and be active again.
Here's my honest fanboy-free review of the Google Nexus 5. I've used various brands of phones for the past year so I hope that I can share my experiences of the Nexus 5 compared to the others.

The Nexus 5 is a "cheap" phone. For $349 off contract for the 16GB version, it's quite the steal. Not to mention the flagship specs! What more can we ask for a device priced this affordable?
Build Quality
Phenomenal. Call me low standard, but I think the build is great, at least for the black one. Sure, it's no HTC One or iPhone 5s, but the soft touch back feels awesome. Period. It feels great in the hand and is kinda resistant to scratches. Mine looks mint even after so much use! The build is great; it doesn't flex, and is sturdy. Did I mention how nice the soft touch back feels? It does catches fingerprints and oils from your hands though. But just wiping it off with your fingers will make it look new again.
Power Hungry
The Nexus 5 is full of power. With a Snapdragon 800, 2GB of RAM and the Adreno 330, it will take anything I throw at it. The only issue I had with performance is Real Racing 3. I have the occasional frame-rate drop on that game but other that, it runs like butter.
The UI is smooth with no lag, multitasking is a breeze. There's really nothing else I can ask for.
Pure Google
The Nexus 5 comes with the latest and greatest of Android, 4.4 KitKat. As of this review, there has been 2 updates to far to bring it up to 4.4.2.
The Nexus 5 also comes with the latest Google Now Launcher, and I love it. I've never used Google Now before as it was too much an hassle for me to swipe up to open it. Now as it's fully integrated into the launcher, I find myself using it. A lot.
The "Okay Google" hotword detection is beyond cool. I like showing it off to my friends and they all think its cool. Some people find it a waste of battery. For me, I use it a lot as I'm a student who relies too much on Google. Being able to do Google searches when eating and not getting the sauce all over the phone is useful to me.
As for hangouts being the default SMS app, I think it's a matter of personal opinion. I find it okay. Anyway, it's android! The default messaging app can be changed easily.
Sure, icons are huge. What's the big deal with that?
Eye-opening Screen
The screen is absolutely fantastic. Colors are accurate and the screen is super sharp.
It's great for watching videos and for reading books on. The screen looks like its popping out at times! In fact, I'll go as far as to call it the best screen on a smartphone. Period.
Camera
Meh. Camera quality is okay. Nothing fantastic but it does the job. I find it better than the HTC One in terms of sharpness but in low light, its just no good.
If you are looking for the best camera in a smartphone, stay away.
Speakers
Simply put, its not good. The sound quality is just not good. Sure, its no BoomSound, but still. Its not the best, but it does its job well.
Oh well, for a $350 smartphone with monstrous specs, there's bound to be compromises. I guess the speakers is one of them.
(Edit)I came from the HTC One and therefore my expectations for speakers in smartphones may have increased greatly. I think that the speakers on the Nexus 5 is sufficient, but can be better. Just my 2 cents
Battery Life
At first, it was not good. I had to bring my portable charger everywhere I went. But over time, it has improved. I now can get 6 hours on screen time! I know, crazy right? I guess I had to "break" in the battery.
Call Quality
The earphone used for calls is great, I can hear the other party clearly and they can hear me clearly.
Bottom Line
Is it worth it? Yes. Should you get it? Hell Yes. For the price, its really, really worth it! Furthermore it's from Google; guaranteed updates for the next 2 or so years. It runs great, it's smooth and I really like the Google Now Launcher. I'd choose this phone over the iPhone 5s or any other phones!
This phone really is the best android phone yet.
P.S. Please give me feedback on my review! Please correct me if there's any error! Thanks for taking the time to read this!
I think there's nothing wrong with the speakers. I don't think they're bad or anything. I went from a Note 2 to Nexus 5 and I barely notice the difference between speakers. Sure it's no HTC One-quality speakers but they work fine.
A fantastic review I must say!
Cheers mate!
Good review and you are right with all points. It's really the best Android phone.

Yes, I agree, they work fine. But maybe I'm used too high quality speakers so they sound kind of crappy to me. Its not fantastic, but they do the job well.

Great review, came from a S4 and love this phone in comparison. Pure android is the best and have had no desire thus far to load a custom ROM.
Agree with all your points but the speaker quality, its not the best but not horrible at all.
Very happy with the phone overall.

Were you undoing your review on complete stock, or are you running a custom ROM/kernel? Thanks.

Yes I agree. Maybe I didn't say it right. Its not good, but it still gets the job done. Maybe its because
I came from the HTC One and that probably raised my expectations for speaker quality. I have edited my original post to reflect that.

Totally stock. I believe that stock Android by Google is the best ROM there is.

I think it depends when you bought it. Didn't they drill bigger holes for the speaker in later revisions? I know I got a day 1 order and the speakerphone is awful.

Could be. I have the new revision.
I like this review simply because it has more pros than cons although in some countries it isn't really that cheap. I bought my 32gigs for almost $500.

Nice review and my thoughts exactly since November 2013!
Nice review and I think the speakers are a bit on the low side.

I don't understand... I find the low light shots (with HDR+) very good !

Pics from it are, naturally, noisier and not as detailed as from the 1020, but they seem to be as good as the ones from the LG G2, which we already pegged in our camera comparisons as one of the best Android cameras out there

Good review. I find the speaker works just fine. It's leaps and bounds better than the one on the GNex anyways (has a much fuller sound)

For me I have to position it perfectly before it will take a nice picture in low light /:

Yep. Speaker works fine. I don't have the GNex so I can't say that much but compared to the iPhone 5s which I'm using as a companion to the Nexus 5, the speakers on the Nexus 5 truly is lacking.

I gotta say I have the EXACT same sentiments as you when it comes to this phone.
I gotta say the speaker location is awesome, but the speaker itself is lacking.
Atleast it wasn't placed on the rear.
Camera is good enough to capture moments. Nothing to brag about.
Other than that, everything else is awesome.
My previous phones are Note 2, Moto G, Nexus 4 , Optimus G, iPhone 5, Galaxy S4, Galaxy Nexus, Captivate, and S2

Reviews are subjective so there isnt really any scope for error.
Please don't take this the wrong way but there are loads of reviews here and although yours may be the most comprehensive, because they're subjective - it doesn't really offer much. Take 10 reviews, all 10 may agree on 1 point and disagree on another....

Guess it depends what last phone you had but the speaker destroys my old phone. I'd say both the speaker and headphone audio quality are superior to the average laptop as well. Compares favorably to my $900 Lenovo anyways.

Great review! I purchased my nexus 5 black from swappa for $365 32gb in good condition. I gotta say I also love the feel of the soft black skin. Its great and I totally I agree with you, however I managed to put a very minor scratch dent on the back with only having it 3 days lol. Wish I could have this phone caseless but I feel like I would beat it up due to my aggressive lifestyle. Anyway good review and I also love the phone so far.
