Hey all.
I have to s4 and love it. Loads! But I'm thinking about going for the z1.
Camera is good from what I've heard. But is it really that good?
Is it good for fast moving motion? Kids jumping on trampoline and stuff life that.
My s4 is just fantastic on sport pictures. Doesn't blur at all. Also battery life?
Also is the phone any good?
Sorry for all the questions I just want a change and I like this camera I hear on the z1.
How does the phone feel?
Thanks

I love my z1. The camera in great in daylight, but not so great at night unless you use the manual nighttime settings. Is it worth the upgrade is up to you. I never thought the s4 took bad photos. Myself, I'd say no if you are just looking for a better camera. S4 is a great phone. I just think the z1 is a slightly better one. It's my opinion though and I'm entitled to it.
Hmm... Well it's waterproof as well. Which is a big thing for me. I'm always scared to pull my phone out in rain. I love in Wales in the UK We get enough rain lol.

I've purchased a Galaxy S4 for my father and sister and personally own a Note 2. And let me tell you this - the Z1 feels remarkably better than the S4, or any Samsung phone for that matter.
The S4 is great 'n all with very solid hardware, but the Touchwiz UI is what is starting to really bother me. I played with my Z1 for a full day before I was forced to return it (LTE issues with the specific model I purchased) and simply loved it. I love the near vanilla Android experience with Sony's little UI on top. It wasn't as intuitive as Touchwiz, but it was so fluid in what it did that I simply did not care that it didn't have the same things that the S4 has. The only thing I'd say you'd have to consider if the size of the actual phone. While it may have the same amount of screen real estate, it is much larger than the S4. In fact, it's nearly the same size and weight of my Note 2.
So if you don't mind the larger phone (in comparison to the S4), then go for it. The camera and the waterproofing is just an added bonus. The experience of the phone is so great that is simply trumps every other aspect. Everything is just so smooth and fluid that I'm having very little second thoughts about my future purchase. The Note 3 was released today and I love it (I work at Best Buy so I've got unlimited access to it really) but I simply cannot ignore the greatness of the Z1.

have to say Sony is making its mark now . i got rid of my gt-i9505 for the z1 . time will tell if i made the right move. so far so good. for Sony
The jump from s4 to a z1 isn't that big bro. My GF has the s4, I have the z1, camera is almost the same (but I'm not a professional photographer, just saying). But the game changer here is the waterproof feature, I would love to try underwater shots. It would be so unique from other people's phones. hehe
needed a change from samsung

lol i wouldn't be putting water near the phone any time soon. i heard on some other site someone tried it is a sink of water. not good results.
I just gave my S4 to the Mrs after buying the Z1. It's faster, camera is awesome. The timeshift burst is fun and makes for great "auto-awesome" pics on g+.
I've also put it in the sink a few times and use it in the shower.
Overall, I'm glad I switched!

Mother of God. I can shower and watch youtube.... That sounds like one hell of a plan. What about the headphones jack... Where does the water go if it goes on the? I've noticed it's not covered.
Thanks for reply all. I'm very tempted. The camera is a big thing for me. S4 motion pictures are insane.
If I can take pictures like these I took on my s4 then I think I will get the z1.

take the leap man i did and i am happy with new z1. feel /performance/ all good .
Bro about the headphone jack, that's the great upgrade they have made from the Z. They removed the flap, and made the headphone jack waterproof without the flaps! I'm not joking. If by upgrade you mean premium feel and waterproof, then this z1 WILL BE A BIG UPGRADE from your s4 bro.
You guys have sorted my choice. All I need to do now is find someone who wants to swap. Lol.

Oh I love my SGS4 too! I've been more amazed at the fast development than the actual phone itself! I feel secure in knowing I made the right choice
Loving mine, too. I've had it for a bit over 2 weeks now and it was a bit of a learning curve coming off a long line of HTC phones (the S3 in my sig is my wife's), but I'm at home now. And it's so nice to have a phone that works so well compared to all the naggy little problems the HTC's always had.
Im coming from an S3 and really digging the new 1080p crisp screen. Out of the box the S4 feels a little sluggish compared to the S3 even with the latest OTA.
I want it! ;D
I'm very impressed. I actually ran mine stock for a week and out of the box it is impressive. The camera is as good if not better than my wife's Polaroid!
I've been running stock since I got it and not one complaint.

Agree with u, But ****ing the plastic cover and so expensive price.
wait a little while it will go down in price, and for everyone else there is one rom that is stock but it doesnt have all the bloatware its called forcerom
Absolutely loving this phone. Still learning and getting the hang of all the little tricks it can do, but my jump from the S2 has been magnificent thus far. Smooth like butter, fast as lightning, battery life is outstanding, screen looks amazing. Now I'm just patiently waiting for Team Venum's ROMs to be released...then I'll be in S4 heaven.
EDIT: A final thing I'd like to add that I didn't anticipate when I purchased the phone. I was seriously thinking of switching from Sprint because I had MAJOR issues in terms of phone service and reception, not to mention I'd hardly ever see 4G. Because I live in Chicago and work(ed) for US Cellular, I was aware of the details involving their purchase of the Chicagoland area US Cellular customer base and data towers, so I decided to stick around in hopes that service would improve over time. But once I got this phone, the improvement in signal was astonishing. Have yet to find a spot without service and 4G all day.
yea the phone is perfect it simply is the best android phone out there period, but ya only issue with getting it when it comes out would be waiting for development to progress =) o well it will come ill be patient the phone is worth it <3 and i came from an s2 as well!
and actually its not a bad thing waiting for more development is a good thing so i can enjoy stock rom LOL instead of a custom rom of my choosing, anyway to anyone who may wonder, this is the best android phone period imo =)

Well the plastic vs metal is completely a eye of the beholder type of deal, some people say it feels cheap and others like how it's light smooth and nice in the hand. Personally I like it.
Plastic cover allows for easy access to the battery and SD Card, and it scratches less than aluminum. And anyways you can grab a metal battery cover if you want they're pretty cheap.
But.... On the price.. I definitely agree completely lol. :banghead:

I've had mine since the weekend they got released. Still really enjoying the switch over from my long history with HTC. Great phone that delivers on what it promises. I just didn't know what I was missing on the HTC phones I owned until the wife got her S3 last year.
I love it very much

I've been researching this phone a whole lot because I plan on buying this next month sometime, but a few things are unclear:
What is this phone like? A lot of people suffer from dead pixels, poor build quality, etc.
It also seems HTC is in the verge of bankruptcy. They're not doing too well sales wise and top executives are leaving.
It kinda makes me a bit nervous.

Heh, HTC has had hit in sales. Bad one at that but they are not even close to bankruptcy. Not even close. It will few years for that even if current things continue. They still have market cap of around 250 billion $. What is happening is not ideal. In fact it is bad, but it is not the end game yet.
Built quality issues were more widespread in early units. The smaller issues like small gaps between the top and bottom speaker grill and body still persist but those are really minor issues. The other issues have reduced in frequency (at least frequency of it being reported here at XDA ).
You can always return the phone if it is not up to your standards. It should not happen on flagship, but these days almost all flagships are hit by such issues as initially most are rushed products.
There are plenty of threads here about how the phone it. It is mixed bag for me, but it is a beautifully built phone. Has its quirks with unconventional button layout, unconventional Sense 5 etc. But that is personal choice in the end. If you can go play with the demo piece for a while at store near you before making purchase. But overall it is good phone. The only other phone that really competes with it is S4. I wont consider any other phone.
The One is a rather simple friend.

Both the HTC One Developer Edition and the Samsung Galaxy S4 (GS4) are my first Android phones. I returned the GS4 because 9gb of application storage was not acceptable. I have, literally, installed every available custom ROM because I really do not like Sense 5. I enjoy Blinkfeed, but IMHO it should be a scrollable widget instead of the default homescreen. Yes the One's bootloader can be/is unlocked, but none of the available ROM are particularly functional or impressive. If you buy the One, you'll likely choose an improved stock ROM rather than a completely custom ROM in order to maximize the camera functionality. I really dislike the camera app. I also disliked the GS4 camera app. In fact, I haven't found an Android camera app as functional as the 3rd party camera app I had on my iPhone.
My build quality seems fine. I am not finicky. My device IS NOT gapless, but I really don't care. My screen don't seem to have any dead pixels. If it did, with a 480 pixel density, I could never see something so small.
All in all, the One is a solid phone. I definitely wouldn't buy it for market price again. I'm not too sure about HTC solvency, but the One seems to have a strong development community, so the phone will unlikely ever be irrelevant.
buy it.
you only hear from the vocal minority on here regarding quality control issues, and it seems that people here are looking for problems to complain about. every htc one owner i've physically spoken to has had nothing but great things to stay about it
Martin... Its a great phone. Sense 5 is a step closer to stock android (u so love) than TW.
It feels great in the hand, premium build quality (Google for earlier build flaws), it's fast, smooth and everything the S3 is not Imo..... And u know how I loved my s3
Not as much rom/kernel options as the S3/S4 but similar issues apply...
HTC, just like samsung, seem to hold back some sources, even after release. So... Devs have to reverse engineer.
But... Good thing is... Like the i9505, This has the qualcomm s600 and not the exynos so better options for the future.
I wouldn't read too much into the whole htc "staff shuffle" issue just yet. It may affect future devices, but not the One.
Fact is, all the best AOSP, CM, aokp devs have this phone and are working on it right now. CM runs good, Roman has an aokp rom, just in case u don't like Sense 5 . so I suppose we'll always have the stock edition on a way.
My honest opinion is... If ur looking for a good phone that looks good, feels good and sound good, and different to TW... but u can still flash decent/different stuff on for 12 months then buy it...
If you need to have this phone for longer then buy a nexus... Cause going on past history, Samsung will have a new phone next summer, and htc could drop this phone completely in 9 months in favour of their next flagship.

Well,
IMHO this is a very good phone. I agree built quality issues are there because it is not priced as the S4 is, but I've had two HTC Ones and none of them were unacceptable. You see a lot of forums/posts about it because the odd one out is always visible. It is a very good phone.... Just the one Android ecosystem wanted. It is a lifestyle thing to upgrade, I guess.
The Camera is awesome no matter what people say.
Fastest capture I've ever seen. Best low light performance. Zero Lag while using the phone. and Looks. well lets talk about something else :victory:
buy a note 2 better all rounder :good:

HTC still never reported a loss but their profits have been going down but it takes more than a few bad quarter for a company to go down. And it' s normal especially for companies traded on a exchange to switch management if the management doesn' t meet its targets. HTC will be here in next year...
I'm in the market for an upgrade and am torn between the Xperia Z and the Nexus 4. Obviously the Nexus 4 has the advantages of cost and timely updates from Google. I've read a lot of professional reviews about both phones, but would enjoy the chance to hear from Xperia Z owners about why I should choose this device over the Nexus 4.
The main advantages that I can see are; the screen resolution, the LCD screen being better in direct sunlight, 4G, upgradeable storage, waterproof, arguably stronger to being dropped, better battery life, better looks. Of those the upgradeable storage seems like a large gain, and the waterproofing a nice novelty (unless it one day saves me I guess!)
I'd love to hear from anyone that wants to persuade me to spend a bit more cash and go for the XZ.
I sold my N4 and bought an XZ. The only advantage the N4 has is that it's a Nexus, I run Cyanogenmod though so that's pretty much a non issue for me. Also, the N4 has a much more active dev community. Obviously it's cheaper too. I prefer the XZ in every other way though.
If you have any specific questions feel free to ask.
as the upper guy said go for the XperiaZ if u like giving your phone a shower every week
and have you checked ZL cause it is smaller with same 5inch screen
it's lighter also it has a better sound since its not rugged
Thanks for your reply about the ZL. According to the Sony website it's a few grams heavier but a decent bit smaller dimension wise. It's not available over here yet, but I'm going to keep an eye out for it.
I'd be interested to hear opinions about two issues that have come up in the reviews:
1) Software flaws that require the phone to be restarted to resolve
2) How the phone feels against your ear during calls - this sounds a bit of a strange one I admit!
Finally, does anyone have any information about the cost of Sony replacing the battery. Having replaced the battery (quite easily) on my Samsung Galaxy after about a year I'd be interested to know how easy/costly it is on a device such as this. I know Apple replace them on the iPhones for £55.
If it was my decision I would get a n4. Not only does it trounce the XZ in benchmarks but you get the vanilla android experience and you'll always be on the cutting edge when it comes to software updates. If 4G is a must then its the XZ you'll want although the hspa+ on the n4 is more than fast enough. Also, If you need the best shooter you can get then the XZ is also your best bet although again the nexus 4 is still not awful with its 8mp camera. Both phones will require a wipe down every once in a while due to their design (the nexus 4 has a gorilla glass back). I don't own a nexus 4 myself but quite a bit of my friends do and while only one of them has shattered the back cover, I've read many stories of people who absolutely despise the Nexus 4 claiming the back will shatter at the slight impact, however this can easily be worked around with a nice beefy case if you're worried.

I'm sort of in the same boat, I sold my iPhone 5 and brought a nexus 4.
I'm happy with it to a point but I'm really interested in the Z, I'm not sure why but it looks amazing.
I've never really played with a Z apart from a demo handset in phone shop but it looked wicked.
I think the main thing I got the nexus for was the updates, I'm happy with the performance of the phone, battery life could be better but apart from that, the nexus is a really good phone.
But if I had the chance to swap for a xperia Z then I would definitely swap.

I have both a N4 and XZ. I'd strongly recommend the XZ for LTE and the camera, if those matter to you. The N4's camera kind of sucks.
Sent from my C6603 using XDA Premium HD app
I wouldnt make the jump or wouldnt pay extra 200 for XZ over nexus 4, its a good phone but not a lot of dev for it, so far we have 1 kernel developer and maybe 4-5 good roms dev after 3 months coming out. I dint think it was a big jump from S3 to XZ.
CM10.1 is on here but there are a lot of bugs including memory leak. XZ is comparable to N4 but I dont think it can compete with HTC one or S4 and thats coming from someone who own the phone for more than a month.
P.s Dont come on this forum and ask for opinion, youtube and look at your options, most on here are either Fanboy or Sony employee.

Nexus has price and Android Update on its side
on the other hands, XZ is more powerful, absolutely awesome design
that's all rest its bull****, you cant compare point per point every stuff
are you willing to spend over 500/600 euros for such mobile phone?
that's your first question to figure out
personally i m focused much about aesthetic and design, XZ is one of most if not the most beautiful smartphone ever made
it s even prettier than iPhone 5
focus on those things,
XZ = design and powerful
Nexus = quality / cost almost unbeatable, Android Update

That wasn't a memory leak though, it was a gpu scaling issue and has been fixed (for me at least). It was a very minor issue and I wouldn't have even noticed if it wasn't pointed out.
Others have pointed out the price difference. This is absolutely right. Having the N4, if the XZ wasn't given to me, I wouldn't have gotten it. Between the 2, the N4 is half the price. If you're looking to spend money on one or other, the N4's definitely a bigger bang for the buck. While I do firmly believe that the XZ is a better all around phone, I can't honestly say that the differences you get warrant the additional 300 bucks.
Well I guess it depends on where you live but I'd only save 40SEK (About 6.50USD) A month on the Nexus 4.
And the salesman was really pushing the nexus4 so I guess it isn't to popular here in Sweden either. So the choice was easy for me.
Aannyyway, I went with the Z, obviously. Mostly for the water resitance as i broke my S2 from water damage and my arc got dropped once to (but it survived)
I love this phone, I don't have any issues with it. Except that you NEED to buy good screen protector, one with lifetime warranty perhaps.
You do not wan't to scratch the Anti-Shatter Filter. ( I actually returned mine because I did and got it replaced)
Thanks for all of your inputs. I feel a lot more informed, but I'm not sure if I'm any closer to making a decision.
The more I think about it though the more interested I am in the 'pure Android' experience. I might try and bide my time and wait and see if the S4 'Nexus' ships internationally, or if there is any noise towards the end of the year about a Nexus 5.

Xperia Z has open AOSP Sources, with time there will be a perfect AOSP rom, and the roms we've got now are perfectly fine, they're great actually, the Carbonrom is almost flaw free. and Cyanogenmod works great as a daily driver, few lag bugs and radio isn't working afaik.
I paid as much for the xperia z then I would for the nexus 4. And I get waterproof and bigger screen. So it was easy to make the call and expendable memory is nice too. Both would cost 300 euros. Defiantly the Xperia Z is the better phone for the same price.

Im sure it is, however, based on beer goggles the day of my reply and the fact that N5 is a fairly physically challenged device, I do apologize for not 'metaphorically' extinguishing any flames that may have otherwise saved a perfectly good yet otherwise beautiful device and I might add, that only a mother could love.
Not hating or trolling just observing and sharing an opinion.

Battery life is best by far I have ever had, and the measly N5 battery tilted my decision between N5 and Z1 towards the latter. I haven't been disappointed. Phone is rock solid, lasts through an entire day from morning to midnight with heavy usage, camera is actually pretty good, and despite the viewing angles (which don't bother me) the screen is also excellent.

Totally agree with you, I've had exactly the same feeling/iter....
I had the pick of the litter and lived with each of the big hitters for a few days each and at first the Z1 was my least favourite with me leaning more towards the G2, but the solid build, brilliant camera and pace of the handset just won me over, I've got no regrets on my purchase.
On a side note, development is the only thing that has put me off since, but as soon as that bootloader is sorted, it'll be cool and rom's will be flying in.
You could possibly hold fire until it's done, cos if they don't ever fix the bootloader / camera issue then it'll be a travesty and i will be killing some Sony employees.

As far as 4.2.2 works well I'm fine with the fact that we're stuck here (for now). I think that Android version doesn't matter as long as the phone works well. I bought my Z1 a week ago and before that I was on X10 with gingerbread and I didn't had any problems with that. I tried custom ROMs with 4.1.2 and 4.2.2 on it but it had some bugs (like camcorder not working) and the most important thing is that everything works fine.
About being light, I believe that Kit Kat is. But faster!? I'm using my Z1 for a week now and I installed tons of apps, I'm playing heavy games and listening to music in the same time, then switching between games, browser and poweramp and the Z1 didn't lagged not even once! This phone is a beast and I think that it can't get faster than this.
I would really like to get Kit Kat but the 4.2.2 works perfectly so far and while it's so, there's no rush for an update. Being faster (which is almost impossible) is not enough for an update. I'm hoping to get even better battery life and better camera in Kit Kat (4K video recording maybe!?) and some other improvements. Otherwise, the update wouldn't make any sense.

This is what I mean. It can be done but the Updates from Sony are close to nothing. Nexus 5 do not have this problems and the OS is always improved. I prefer Z1 anyway but I will be happy to have some updates soon as is possible, otherwise I have to flash some Rom.

Hey people. So I've been inactive for quite awhile. I used to be lurking at the Xperia Z and HTC One section. In the past year I've used tons of flagships. Starting with the Xperia Z from the iPhone 5. Soon I moved to the HTC One. Not long after, I moved to the iPhone 5s. Recently, I managed to snag myself a Nexus 5. Been using it for awhile so I'd thought its time to clean the dust off this account and be active again.
Here's my honest fanboy-free review of the Google Nexus 5. I've used various brands of phones for the past year so I hope that I can share my experiences of the Nexus 5 compared to the others.
Nexus 5 Review
The Nexus 5 is a "cheap" phone. For $349 off contract for the 16GB version, it's quite the steal. Not to mention the flagship specs! What more can we ask for a device priced this affordable?
Build Quality
Phenomenal. Call me low standard, but I think the build is great, at least for the black one. Sure, it's no HTC One or iPhone 5s, but the soft touch back feels awesome. Period. It feels great in the hand and is kinda resistant to scratches. Mine looks mint even after so much use! The build is great; it doesn't flex, and is sturdy. Did I mention how nice the soft touch back feels? It does catches fingerprints and oils from your hands though. But just wiping it off with your fingers will make it look new again.
Power Hungry
The Nexus 5 is full of power. With a Snapdragon 800, 2GB of RAM and the Adreno 330, it will take anything I throw at it. The only issue I had with performance is Real Racing 3. I have the occasional frame-rate drop on that game but other that, it runs like butter.
The UI is smooth with no lag, multitasking is a breeze. There's really nothing else I can ask for.
Pure Google
The Nexus 5 comes with the latest and greatest of Android, 4.4 KitKat. As of this review, there has been 2 updates to far to bring it up to 4.4.2.
The Nexus 5 also comes with the latest Google Now Launcher, and I love it. I've never used Google Now before as it was too much an hassle for me to swipe up to open it. Now as it's fully integrated into the launcher, I find myself using it. A lot.
The "Okay Google" hotword detection is beyond cool. I like showing it off to my friends and they all think its cool. Some people find it a waste of battery. For me, I use it a lot as I'm a student who relies too much on Google. Being able to do Google searches when eating and not getting the sauce all over the phone is useful to me.
As for hangouts being the default SMS app, I think it's a matter of personal opinion. I find it okay. Anyway, it's android! The default messaging app can be changed easily.
Sure, icons are huge. What's the big deal with that?
Eye-opening Screen
The screen is absolutely fantastic. Colors are accurate and the screen is super sharp.
It's great for watching videos and for reading books on. The screen looks like its popping out at times! In fact, I'll go as far as to call it the best screen on a smartphone. Period.
Camera
Meh. Camera quality is okay. Nothing fantastic but it does the job. I find it better than the HTC One in terms of sharpness but in low light, its just no good.
If you are looking for the best camera in a smartphone, stay away.
Speakers
Simply put, its not good. The sound quality is just not good. Sure, its no BoomSound, but still. Its not the best, but it does its job well.
Oh well, for a $350 smartphone with monstrous specs, there's bound to be compromises. I guess the speakers is one of them.
(Edit)I came from the HTC One and therefore my expectations for speakers in smartphones may have increased greatly. I think that the speakers on the Nexus 5 is sufficient, but can be better. Just my 2 cents
Battery Life
At first, it was not good. I had to bring my portable charger everywhere I went. But over time, it has improved. I now can get 6 hours on screen time! I know, crazy right? I guess I had to "break" in the battery.
Call Quality
The earphone used for calls is great, I can hear the other party clearly and they can hear me clearly.
Bottom Line
Is it worth it? Yes. Should you get it? Hell Yes. For the price, its really, really worth it! Furthermore it's from Google; guaranteed updates for the next 2 or so years. It runs great, it's smooth and I really like the Google Now Launcher. I'd choose this phone over the iPhone 5s or any other phones!
This phone really is the best android phone yet.
P.S. Please give me feedback on my review! Please correct me if there's any error! Thanks for taking the time to read this!
I think there's nothing wrong with the speakers. I don't think they're bad or anything. I went from a Note 2 to Nexus 5 and I barely notice the difference between speakers. Sure it's no HTC One-quality speakers but they work fine.
A fantastic review I must say!
Cheers mate!

I gotta say the speaker location is awesome, but the speaker itself is lacking.
Atleast it wasn't placed on the rear.
Camera is good enough to capture moments. Nothing to brag about.
Other than that, everything else is awesome.

Reviews are subjective so there isnt really any scope for error.
Please don't take this the wrong way but there are loads of reviews here and although yours may be the most comprehensive, because they're subjective - it doesn't really offer much. Take 10 reviews, all 10 may agree on 1 point and disagree on another....
