4.4 kitkat!!! - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S 4 General

So I was in bestbuy today checking out a few cases and the galaxy gear in the new samsung section that they have and the samsung rep was telling me that we are getting kitkat in 2 to 3 months. I honestly dont know if this is true or not but I wanted to post and ask if anyone else has heard anything like that.

2) KitKat 4.4 has been confirmed for the i-9500 [maybe i9505 same time] with a January time frame.

Well, being the end of November, January is only just more than a month away

Probably february..Right now stock rooted mja with wifi fix. Everything good..

Unconfirmed leaks on other sites have it pegged for carrier release in January. Plus time for them to add their BS and we're looking at late February at the earliest.
But don't get too excited about it. The devices that have received it are all missing various features. Some don't have the transparent navigation bar, nobody's getting the Experience Launcher, etc. Makes it sound more like an incremental update than anything groundbreaking.

Expect a wait as always for updates, but you never really know an exact date this early on :/

Yea I would rather the update come at a later date and be packed with kitkat goodies rather than thrown together and not get the true kitkat experience

You do realize it's not gonna be a "true KitKat experience" because we don't have a Nexus device, and Samsung will throw their "stuff" over pure vanilla Android (KitKat).

This is what has me excited. Pure vanilla Android is ugly and devoid of features. Adding Samsung's features is what makes Android at this point. Looking at KiKat on a nexus has me patiently waiting for KitKat to drop on my S4 with all the Samsung additives. Thanks God for the additives.
And Samsung reps are not BestBuy employees. At least that's how I understand it. They do not work for BestBuy but Samsung.

I am a Low Voltage Technician and Merchandising Specialist (during downtimes from remodels) for Best Buy, came from Computers and Wireless/BBY Mobile. I use a cheat sheet, but I can tell my ass from a hole in the wall.
Oh, I've also never had a problem staying up to date on current device and technology offerings. Though I'm not sure of the correlation.
Samsung Specialists do, indeed, work for Samsung, they are not ours. Similar to Apple Solutions Consultants.

True. But the vast majority of users here don't get paid to sell electronics. Too many Sprint, Samsung, Verizon, Best Buy, Radio Shack, etc, etc "reps" don't know much about the products they sell.
Ever go to one of those places and know more about their products than they do? Most frustrating thing ever. If they don't know about their own products, how the heck are they going to know about OTA dates?

I'm never buying a non-Nexus device again

I've had the N7 for less than a day and I'm head over heels in love with it. My next phone will be a Nexus for sure.
Useless thread but I just had to share the love.
If everyone bought Nexus devices because of the prompt updates, it would kick other manufacturers into investing in larger software development teams to deliver updates ontime.

As long as there is a choice I will always go for a Nexus, can't be bothered with manufacturers' customisations and carrier restrictions. Whether the Nexus or similar concept will go on indefinitely is another matter.

Any reason why it wouldn't? Aren't they supposed to come out with multiple Nexus phones sometime at the end of this year?

If profits at Google fall at some point they may take resources away from the hardware side and concentrate on the software side. Wouldn't like to see that happen but can't be discounted.
If, as seems likely, the Nexus 7 becomes the top-selling Android tablet other manufacturers may decide to withdraw from the sector as they can't compete against a company using consumable sales profits in the Play Store to effectively subsidise their manufacturing costs. Alternatively there could be some form of unfair competition or monopoly complaint. Hope not but wouldn't rule it out.

Seriously, thank you for this.
I was worried when I first came on the Nexus sub-forum, that there was a lot of negativity and issues. And granted there are bad experiences with every first run of any product.... but this is the first phone/media device purchase that I have actually been fairly content with it out of the box. The solution for the OEMS is to keep stock jellybean! To differentiate, include new or different hardware or form factor etc. Then put exclusive apps or features that don't require a change of the system. You could have the play store check for something unique to allow the product download or something. That way there would be no problem keeping it current.

According to this article (and others like it I could not find right away) the reputation you speak of for HTC is not true. In terms up updating thier phones, HTC is the best of the major OEMs. Get a ONE!
... not to mention this is the first time (or first time in a while) we've seen them drop the same phone on many carriers, and tout a phone as their flagship for the year.
I feel like they'll be behind making this thing the best they can make it this year.
The best of all major OEM's?! Are you joking? Call me a Sammy fanboy all you want but there upgrading 2 year old phones still, and many, many others! I do NOT see HTC doing this. Samsung has way more phones out then HTC and still manages to do this. I honestly might be getting the One but by no means is HTC the best at updating.

Also keep in mind Samsung's success has them being the top android manufacturer. They have a lot more money to hire developers than HTC. This allows them to keep up with their devices like they do. But Samsung used to be terrible before their success. HTC might become very competitive on updates as well. They're not bad now, but sprint did drag their feet with the Evo 3D.

Indeed, with the One I think we're going to see big things for HTC over the next year. A unified phone being the biggest contributor to their increase sales. They did what the GS3 did originally but stepped up their game with a modern phone with modern specs. Competition is good for the two, it will make everyone else reach harder to stay on par and they'll compete for who has the better phone. I think when 5.0 is dropped most likely next month, both manufactures will be rushing to get it out, we can only hope that the carriers don't drop the ball.
I think HTC has already stated that a 4.2.2 build is in the works and we'll get it soon. (Hopefully)

I know, was just poking some fun. I've had a Samsung Moment, LG Optimus One, then an HTC Evo 3D all on Sprint. I also follow smartphones/tablets and new technology in general daily (actually, part of my job sort of). What I've seen is Samsung sucked at updates until that had success with the Galaxy series, even the early Galaxy's were slow to get updates. The LG phones were lucky to get anything at all. HTC updated pretty well recently, except in the US. International HTC devices got updates pretty quickly and regularly, but Sprint was slow to do so. Sprint seems to have been slow about this in general just like every other carrier here in the US. Although, the Evo 3D was extremely late (almost a year later) to the ICS party. This update was promised to us pretty early and it started to feel like we'd never get it by the time it released. Then Sprint held it for testing I assume for a few more months. The Evo 3D users were suspecting Sprint was holding onto the ICS update to encourage people to buy their Boost Mobile variant of the phone as it released with ICS, was the same exact phone with a different name, and was supposed to attract people to Boost. Not sure if this is the real reason, it was a month or two after that phone launched the rest of us got ICS.
In either case, HTC wasn't bad about it, they weren't great but they weren't bad. Sprint, on the other hand, seems to have been slow and I know there are a number of reasons for this. They need to test everything before they launch it. Does it work on their network properly and with their bloatware? They have to prioritize their devices to test and they have to be thorough to ensure they aren't liable for anything going wrong. It's a crappy system, but thats how it is.

And it also comes with a creaky, terrible housing. Software versus hardware... Take your pick. One can be changed, the other can't. (Of course you can always put a solid case on it. I don't like holding this phone, and I can't overstate how much that informs the experience of using it. It makes an awful first impression, slippery and slimy and simply unpleasant in your hand. My white review unit is completely smooth and glossy, with a subtle checkered pattern that looks textured but is neither grippy nor textured anywhere on its body. Even the silver band around the sides, which is obviously supposed to look like metal, is plastic. Everyone I showed the GS4 to frowned and wrinkled their nose as if it smelled bad, before rubbing their fingers on the back of the phone and then handing it back to me — that's the opposite of the standard reaction to HTC’s One, which everyone wants to ogle and hold. That's going to be a huge problem for Samsung, because the GS4 and One are likely to be next to each other on store shelves, and at least on first impression there's absolutely no contest between the two.

Hmmm Evo LTE came out June, was updated December. 6 months, only 2 months after Sprint released the update for the SG3. Sounds like its not HTC or Samsung but the carrier who is the culprit.
Now lets see. All the GS3's outside the US got upgraded to 4.1.2 in december. Has the GS3 been updated in the US yet? Nope, has it recieved the new samsung premium suite package that everyone else with the GS3 recieved? Nope. Hmmmmm....
If you actually looked at the link posted above, you can clearly see that there isn't much of a difference between Samsung and HTC as far as timely updates.

I honestly don't care about what it's made of as long as it looks good, and performs good I'm fine. I am more of a specs and software kind of person. Although the one does have me pretty intrigued because I've never had a phone built as so, and I listen to music and watch a lot of videos so I know those speakers will come in handy. I'm going to give it a test drive, and if I don't like it, I'll just switch to the S4. The only reason I'm hesitant is because I'm not a big fan of sense... nor am I a big fan of all the stuff you have to do to root the thing. Compared to Samsung phones, it's way more difficult.

As much as I love the One, I was actually thinking the same. If the GS4 comes out and it's amazing, I'll simply switch over. The build quality is no competition, but like I said, you can always get a solid case. I would like a larger screen. If I could get my hands on a phone with 5.5" screen and current hardware, I would probably jump on it (LG Optimus G Pro, if it ever comes to Sprint?).

Don't worry, in the US the One X people will have to wait 6 months for the update you linked. Surely by then the US carriers will have released the 4.2.2 update for the HTC One. Surely!
Well, it's supposed to be in Sprint's hands right now. Problem is, they say it's up to HTC. You know how the story goes. It'll get here when it gets here. Sprint will probably update the EVOLTE before the One.
That's Taiwan. We can only use that as a reference point, nothing else.
But I think this is just getting friggin ridiculous. Maybe there's a serious bug in the update like battery drain and only the US carriers are caring enough to resolve it with HTC?
Lets be honest here... There is a reason Samsung is WINNING! How far can build quality and sense get you when post support sucks ass. Flagships are being killed off by HTC after a year while Samsung updates OG EVO status devices. The GS2 shares the same OS as us for gods sake... This is ridiculous.
I've always been one to steer people away from the plastic GS devices, but you can't deny they are future proof in getting them. I'll have to definitely wait on next year's flags instead of dumping money day 1 like I've done the last 2 years.
And for the fanboys that say... Leave the one... No I will not. I'm NOT saying it's not the best device, but you can't deny post support sucks on our end.

Well, if we're being honest. There is a reason Samsung is winning, and it's called marketing. It most certainly is NOT because HTC phones are slow getting such minor updates like 4.2. Most people don't know anything about it, and it's not even close. The only ones who really care that much are the people on XDA who root and run custom roms, and we are the minority by a HUGE margin.
Honestly, it's even smaller than that, because some of us who root and run custom roms could still care less about this update. It brings next to nothing for a lot of us. Kernel and the ability to run 4.2 roms will be fun...but not that many people care all that much. We all know how annoying it is, it does suck..but it's definitely not the reason why Samsung is winning lol

Silentrx relax man its not a big update. 4.1 is smooth on this phone. The One is still tits, no problems with this phone, just getting used to sense 5 initially
Again tho for updates you need to be on a GSM carrier and have an unlocked Nex

Nope... Don't need nexus because AOSP is boring as Hell. It doesn't even have facebook integration for gods sake. As a matter of fact sir... I have something for you... Check inbox immediately please!

I mostly agree. Remember when people used to call whatever android phone a Droid? Now they say galaxy, even if it's not a Samsung phone. They certainly did something right with the brand name.
Hopefully htc will stick with the One moniker and recover lost customers
It is kinda nice to be the only one among all my friends to have a One while all my Galaxy friends envy my One and say they should have got that instead

Am I the only one not seeing a problem here? HTC is updating a phone that's a year old with the 2nd latest OS version. If anything I would say we should be excited about this.

Excited about what? The One X deserved the update without a doubt... They should have done this without even thinking. Problem I have is... Not even the DEV edition HTC one which is unbranded sold directly from HTC is still on outdated OS regardless of how minor the update is. If the update is so minor... Why do we not have it? Why does the DEV edition NOT have it officially? It makes no sense that this phone was release 4-5 months ago international and they just not got the update. Ours was released 3 months ago and no update in sight. Call it what you want, but I dare you say POST SUPPORT from HTC is better than POST SUPPORT from Samsung?
NO I'M NOT GOING TO CRAPWIZ so please don't make this cool story useless replying that

Sprint is holding it up at this point, not htc. I'm pretty sure tho that Sprint is forcing htc to make some signal improvements, since a lot of people complain the S4/3 has it better due to the plastic body.
No source, just my thoughts. No other imaginable reason why we haven't gotten the update

What I have been thinking is once Verzion starts selling the HTC One, which comes with 4.2.2, then u.s. carriers will be like oh I guess we can update now haha that's what I'm thinking.. but even of they don't, I've herd that since Verizon is CDMA, we will be able to port it fairly easy!

This could be close. Verizion usually wants something "exclusive" when it comes to the phones they carry. They may be the only US carrier with 4.2.2 for a limited time through a deal with HTC.
Unrelated note, why do people think sprint has the update already?
Since HTC doesn't seem to know how to update my phone and I obviously don't know how to enjoy it, I'm probably just gonna kill myself. What's the point of life if Satan, sorry - HTC, can't provide a menial software update?
Exactly, no point to life without 4.2. I NEED IT NOW.

Marshmellow coming in January 2016

It will probably take longer for vzw versions, but at least we know the order it is being released as well as approximate time.
Wonderful, us VZW guys aren't even on the list. Thanks Obama
I guess there is no love for the Galaxy Note Pro. At least my S6 Edge is getting it.

I haven't seen anything further. But I did install the free Marshmallow theme from the theme store.
One of my friends received Android 6.0 on his Boost Mobile LG Stylo today. Not bad for a $179 phone!
i see marshmallow has been out for a bit now for the s6 edge. how is there no tar for those of us who would like to try it out?

Google does the update and then sends it to Samsung for testing. IF Samsung decides the update is worthy and fits into their business plan for the life of the phone, they will test the update and correct things that are specific to the S6. IF that is completed then they send the update to Verizon, who in turn, decides if it fits in their business plan and the planned end of life for the product. If Verizon decides to pass it along then they update the code with their specifics and then they release it to the phones.
All of that has to go good before we knaves might see an update.
Unfortunately Android updates and timeline does not fit into the end of life plans for phones by the carriers. That is why we usually only get one or two updates.
Just saw this while searching online tonight.

It is no February 1st no Marshmellow
You guys know it's Marshmallow... with an A, not an E... right? Seems like something spell check should have warned you of...
Don't suppose anyone's heard anything for us VZW guys in terms of getting any updates, have they? About to list my phone on swappa and try to get something else... Not having root access or the ability to even really play with my phone is making this phone kinda boring to me. That and i'm not as much of a fan of the edge screen as I thought i'd be

If you do get a new phone I strongly suggest you get the Nexus 6. A bunch of support and you can unlock the boot loader and get any ROM you want it's awesome. I've been loving mine!

Yeah it's a catch between the nexus 6 and the turbo 2 if I decide to move away. The turbo 2 in terms of hardware is slightly superior, but unfortunately it seems like it's suffering the same fate as my current phone

Yeah so I've heard. Definitely would recommend the Nexus 6 as I'm using it right now and its amazing but its your choice. Price wise its pretty cheap too. Got mine for $225 on swappa
Starting to roll out from Samsung. Verizon will likely take forever to send it out though....
Another bit of a tease http://www.theregister.co.uk/2016/02/16/samsung_starts_marshmallow_upgrades/

Should I?

I know the note 7 is so hot its literally exploding off the shelves but does anyone think it's worth it for me to get my hands on one and wait for an aftermarket replacement battery to do the swap myself? Are the carriers going to block note 7s from their network? I personally want one at this point simply for the fact most if not all will be gone soon.
Not sure if this guy is trolling hard or simply been living under rock for the past week.
There won't be any after market batteries. Get a grip.

I still have my first Note 7. Other than the annoying messages multiple times a day. I have no complaints. I mentioned in another thread that the T mobile rep said the phones are only getting hot when you use a different charger than what came with the device. I had a guy call me out on it, saying it was a bunch of B'S. Well here I am still using my Note and not a single issue with it. So you decide.

Since it's a discontinued phone that Samsung's lawyers would desperately like out of your hands I'd say the odds are as good as American electing an honest person as president in November. The only update I think we'll see is one that disables the phone.
