Basically my questions are simple, I tried Googling quite extensively but cannot find a comprehensive answer.
Moto X Motomaker vs the Moto X Developer Edition pro and cons...
Here is what I think I know
Motomaker (MM from this point forward) is how you make it, has 16 and 32gb models and comes with a locked bootloader that must be unlocked to flash a ROM or change the fancy things like battery icons and the framework mods. Must wait for verizon to push updates to you at their own rate.. let me know if i'm wrong..
Developer Edition (DE from this for forward) is only 2 tone black and white and only available in 32gb. Bootloader is unlocked stock, can flash roms, change framework, custom apps, mod and tethering, android updates available whenever Google releases them or just come to XDA and find a leak.
I'm wondering if getting the DE is going to be worth the cost and if i comes BLANK with no Verizon bloat on-board. can i still use active notification and camera gesture etc if i flash a ROM?
I understand that the idea flashing a ROM is to get as close as humanly possible to stock android which it already is.
I'm going to be purchasing tomorrow so if you are all out there a timely response would be awesome!
On a side note I'm getting this phone to replace an S4 thats limping along with Safestrap and a Nexus Launcher.
Who's your carrier? T-mobile and Sprint allow you to unlock your bootloader http://www.droid-life.com/2013/09/09/t-mobile-moto-x-added-to-motorola-bootloader-unlock-program/
If you have Verizon or AT&T you'll need to get the dev edition.

Dev edition it is

If you want to run latest versions of android as soon as possible, Developer Edition might not be the ticket. As you can see already, carriers have started to push out kitkat earlier than motorola itself.

I'm in the same boat. I think the idea of the Moto X is great especially since it's getting the updates in a timely manner. I wonder though if the Developer Edition would be any different. Just because it's a Developer Edition doesn't mean it's a Google Play Edition meaning it will probably only receive the update when the Moto Maker X gets an update. That being the case (if I'm correct). Should I purchase the Developer Edition over the Motor Maker X. The only thing I would need to do is wifi tether since I am still on unlimited data and use it daily.
I have the Verizon Dev edition, and the only reason why I got it was so that I can unlock it and root it. With Dev editions you can only get white. If you want to unlock and root and are on AT&T or Verizon, then get the Dev edition, otherwise just get the Moto Maker edition.

What have you done with your Dev Edition Moto X that you couldn't have done with the Moto Maker Version? And I'm asking what have you done, not what you plan on doing. Given the opportunity to do it all over again would you get the Dev Edition again or would you get a Moto Maker version?
Got the Dev edition and have not even unlocked the bootloader. Its that good . was thinking about it to install viper audio mod but have not yet

I have unlocked and rooted my phone, I have installed Xposed and Gravity Box, and Greenify. I also plan on changing the bootloader, but have not found one I liked.
I believe you can root the Moto X without unlocking the bootloader, but from what I understand it is a headache when OTAs come through and there are chances of it bricking the phone. Since I was able to unlock the bootloader, I was able to flash TWRP and flash SU. And I don't have to worry about OTAs screwing up my phone.
But I need to stress this, do not spend the extra money on Dev edition if you are not on Verizon or AT&T, the Moto Xs from Motomaker can be unlocked.
The only added bonus the Dev edition brings is that unlocking it does not void the warranty which is nice because there can be cases which arise when it is a manufacture defect which the warranty would cover and it is nice to have that protection. But if you unlock a non Dev edition, it will void the warranty.
I personally would go with the Dev edition. There is always bound to be something I want to do to it. Plus future proofing

I did not unlock the bootloader until last week, which is also when I finally got time to unlock it and root the phone. But the change in warranty policy was a nice push.
I recommend unlocking and rooting your phone, I really missed Greenify and Titanium Backup. It might be a placebo effect or being on break last week I didn't use the phone as I normally do, but Greenify really helped the battery life. I went almost 22 hrs and about 2 hrs of screen time with no recharge couple times, using (Snapchat, Chrome, Reddit News, SMS, Hangouts, Phone, Plume, Maps, CBS Sports) heavily. Hopefully when I go back to normal usage this occurs again.
I should have been thinking about this a lot sooner than tonight. I'm leaning towards the Moto Maker edition for the obvious reasons of the color options. All I need is root the main thing I care about is tethering. And if I'm not mistaken there are apps on the market that will allow me to do that without root. I currently have a rooted Verizon Galaxy Note 3 and the only thing I use root for is tethering.
I went for the developer edition. I think it is worth the money..

1) a true custom recovery
2) no exploit needed for root

" Perhaps faster upgrade process" - nope. Same for everyone. I believe motomaker version got it first...
"flagship product" - Motomaker is advertised, Dev edition is not known to all.
"Investment in quality products" - they are both the same phone.

I'm planning to buy the Moto X today. I live in Asia/Middle East. Will the T-Mobile Off contract version work? Because i want to customize my phone through moto maker. I know LTE most likely most wont work, but my main concern is will it detect any sim and 3g data should work. Thanks for the help in advance.

Also, wth would the difference be at this point if they would both retain moto x features lol. I believe that is what I'm doing especially at&t and they're bootloader locking stuff. Just not sure which version and which one comes out first.

i might be waiting. I'll be considering the phone but am going to have to pay full price off contract. So if I'm going to do that, I might as well get the developer edition. However, I would really like to order the phone on opening day, so I'm hoping the Developer edition comes out same day.

I hear you, same with me. I'd have to buy off contract either way and dont feel at&t needs more of my money. But you say developer edition which would most likely be on the Motorola website? What about the Google edition version that is rumored to come out? Aren't these the same companies, why make it so confusing lol.
It would be nice to have some idea of how long we have to wait......
I defently waiting. Want my unlocked bootloader...I dont want to wait to see if someone can unlock the regular bootloader. I am on Verizon...so I also need to pay full price to keep my unlimited data

Price is what will decide it for me.
I am considering the purchase of a Developer Edition phone only because of the price of it. I am thinking it would be cheaper to purchase it from Google than it would be to buy it off contract from the carrier. But if it is the same price then I will just get it from my carrier. The colour designing of it isnt important to me.
News should come out in a few days about dev edition availability. I'm not getting the at&t one I don't think. I'm already hearing all the complaints about their annoying phone book software, and their locked BL.

The address book software doesn't get in the way. Usually it pops up on phones like the One, but on the X, I haven't seen it yet.

I'm definitely waiting for a developer unlocked edition. Don't want carrier bloat and waiting for bootloader unlock and random issues.
I'll likely return mine that I bought at AT&T when a dev edition is out or news of one. I forget how much I HATE the carrier having more control over my device than me.

Yeah...if not I'm just gonna go with the Motomaker version and unlock the bootloader another way which probably has been done already.
So what's the chance of Verizon getting an unlocked developers edition?
What was the last phone Verizon allowed unlocked out of the box on their network?
compatibility with theoretical future unlocked stock?
Question: Let's say in the future some brilliant dev-type finds a root & bootloader unlock exploit for the non-dev edition of the VZW Moto X. Would ROMs developed for that phone (the rooted/unlocked VZW stock Moto X) be compatible with the Dev Edition? Does anyone know how this has worked with previous Dev Editions?
I'm just wondering in the situation described above, whether the people who shelled out for Dev Edition early on could find themselves with a much smaller mod/dev community to draw upon than people who wait around for a potential (but maybe never coming) future unlock of the device. Would the two VZW versions of the Moto X (Dev and stock) be essentially the same device aside from bootloader, and therefore have compatibility?
I know this is all conjecture until we see an actual Dev Edition on VZW (which might not happen) but I'd be interested in thoughts.
Roms would work on both developer and regular version. One plus would be 32 GB . im hoping Verizon will get developer with the extra storage.

Well with current rumors pegging it at around $500+, I sense this phone failing commercially.
It's just too much money.
I get Moto wants this to be their "iPhone" but if you wanted to massively pull the rug out from under their feet, you would stick this thing's non contract price around the rumors for the 5C price, which is $300-$400.

Moto X has been released in the end of summer and yet it looks pretty dead in here. What gives? Not a developer friendly phone?
I'm a new user of moto x (bought yesterday) and I think that devs are waiting for more upgrades to kit kat in all carriers and versions (VZ, ATT, GSM, rogers)
Not a lot of devs bought the phone. Also most people are happy with the phone as-is.
any phone with locked bootloaders will be not be super active with development. Also most people want aosp roms (CM, AOKP) etc, so we already basically have aosp on here anyway, so there isn't a lot of negativity about the lack of development
The Stock ROM is perfect, xposed framework makes it even more beyond perfect. If that's possible

I figure camera and screen colors could be tweaked .....I heard those are weak spots.
I suspect sales of the Moto X are not quite as good as anticipated, which is a real shame since it's such an excellent phone.
Additionally, and most importantly, the two biggest carriers - AT&T and Verizon - have locked bootloaders for the subsidized versions, which comprise a vast majority of phone sales. Offering a dev edition isn't enough if you can't get that edition subsidized, since one of the major drivers of development is the popularity of a phone.
To boot, Motorola only recently changed their policy on unlocking bootloaders to not void the warranty, which may have driven some people to buy subsidized/locked versions rather than springing for the development edition. Aside from the development edition being ugly (IMO), it's hard to justify spending $500+ on something that has no warranty.

If you have a Dev edition Moto X it should take 5 minutes to root......
Flash a recovery in fastboot, then flash a SU package.

from the At&t store off contract. Now at the motorola online store its 399 and at att its 529? Shoulnt Att lower their price to match?
Also was considering the htc one mini or even the nexus 5, but somehow at 399 with customization and free chromecast I wouldnt mind waiting the 5 days for delivery. Did anyone prefer the htc one mini or even the nexus 5 over the moto x?
I already have an lg g2 and would like something smaller with good battery life as well.
I guess last question, from what I'm seeing rooting is easy but can you unlock the bootloader? Xposed frameworks working ok?

I can't really speak to anything AT&T related, but I just bought a Moto X from Google. I elected to purchase the Developer Edition, because the bootloader can be unlocked. From what I understand, there is still a bounty to unlock the bootloader for non-dev devices. If the price from Google is lower than AT&T, then there really isn't any reason to buy it from them.
I'm running a custom rom, and the Xposed framework is functioning flawlessly.

Sort of. The non-dev models can't install a custom recovery at the bootloader via fastboot, but there is a work around.
You can root using the tool on this page:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2477132
After rooting, you can install safestrap, which is a custom recovery tool used to install roms. It doesn't replace the stock recovery image, but it does work to flash roms.
Xposed + GravityBox (and other modules) negates, for the most part, the need for custom roms.
If I had it to do all over again I'd buy a moto maker T-Mobile phone. It's sim unlocked, works on at&t lte and you can unlock the bootloader.

Where's the fun in that?
This is not a tinkerer phone.
So before the latest news about google selling moto,....... don't get me started here I ordered a dev edition for $379.
Anyway thoughts on if it is worth the $125 dollar difference in cost ( price of new dev edition - selling price my old x)
Worth the cost? I am rooted now on my X but thinking the dev ed was (before the sale of moto) more future proof?
Maybe now the unlocked boot loader is more important because of the sale?
Thoughts???
In short, the developer edition is unrestricted in the fact once you've unlocked the bootloader, you can flash any rom that's available. It's technically "future proof" in the sense that as long as developers are making roms, it will continue to get the latest AOSP updates, or in the case of the Eclipse rom, it is AOSP while retaining stock features. I don't think you made a mistake in getting the developer edition, I made a mistake getting the moto maker X and I'm kicking myself because now that Google sold Moto to Lenovo, it's possible we won't see the updates that Moto was pushing so fast. I think as long as the software team at Moto stay in place, though, and Lenovo doesn't touch what the X and the G are all about, we ultimately will see the same basic process in terms of updates and the way the X and G are almost AOSP. Dev edition really isn't more expensive, the 32GB MM is the same price as a Dev edition, which has the same 32GB of space. Only difference is you're getting an open device instead of one that is closed to modification.

Not trying to start a flame war, but by the time Lenovo takes over, your X will be on your shelf and you'll be rocking a new phone anyway. All this panic is getting old. This deal has to go through all sorts of approvals will probably take a year or more before it takes shape. Plus, it's not like Lenovo bought Moto to totally dismantle it. They didn't become the dominant force in the PC world by making stupid decisions. Moto has huge brand name recognition in the US and they are currently making great strides with the X and G.
I actually think this will be a huge success for Moto. Also remember Moto has pushed a bunch of apps to the play store making updates Super easy.

Great points. I loved Eclipse ROM on my G. Nexus, have to look into that once I get the Dev Edition.
It'd be good to look at the specs on the model you plan on getting, because there's a Dev edition for CDMA and for GSM, and different model numbers for them. But I believe you're right as well.

I can partially agree, Schaweet. I think that as long as the reigns are with Moto, then everything will stay great as is. Maybe even better, since Lenovo does have great products presently. Love their laptops/desktops. I'm just afraid that everything the Moto X and G are could be intruded upon by the software team at Lenovo, meaning the nice AOSP-type OS that Moto use might get a lot of unwanted modifications. I think that's the bigger concern, not how Moto will be as a company, but how their products will be influenced.

Fair enough. It's a total guess about what they will do with the UI. I can say with a high degree of confidence that they won't update the X and add their UI. Going forward though, you never know. I'd hope they'd just push and market Motos existing strategy, but that's my consumer side hope. I would think the near AOSP UI that Moto has could be enough to provide the product difference they want to separate them from everyone else without some silly skin like TV.

So I just picked up a Moto x after having owned a Galaxy nexus for about a year and a half. So there are a few things that currently bother me, and seems like there are no fixes to date.
Moto X (2013), Verizon with unlimited data, OS 4.4.4, non-dev edition, bootloader locked and no root access.
1. There are no solutions to unlock the bootloader as of today.
2. There are no solutions to root and ROM.
3. I cannot use the native hotspot tether feature on my unlimited plan. Has anyone tried the clockworkmod paid tether app ($5) or any other tether app? Can I USB tether from my phone to my Nexus 7 or another phone?
4. Can I somehow remove (unlikely) or at least hide the bloatware?
My browsing of the moto x forums has basically told me that I'm stuck with some upgraded hardware and some highly restricted software comapred to my last phone. I'm very much enjoying the phone and it's new intricacies that my galaxy nexus didn't offer, but any insight would be greatly appreciated.
I believe you are SoL on bootloader unlock/root so 1-3 are out I believe. 4 you can go into settings>apps>disable for the ones you don't want to see.
@rice923
For #1 you are correct. With the NON-Developer Edition Verizon Moto X (XT1060), the bootloader is locked. Moto doesn't give out the bootloader unlock codes for Verizon, ATT and Republic Wireless. Your only option at this point would be IF the China Middleman starts responding again, to buy a code from him.
With a locked bootloader there is no root, and no way to disable write protection when on 4.4.4. Past root exploits don't work. The latest is Sunshine, but it doesn't work on 4.4.4 devices. see -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/general/request-help-exploit-moto-x-bl-t2828471 or see -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2792487
For #2 and #3, they require an unlocked bootloader.
For #4. Some of the bloat can be "disabled" via Settings -> Apps -> All... open the app you want, and see if the Disable button is there. 3rd party apps to FREEZE wont work because you are not rooted and write protection is still enabled.
Thanks for confirming my findings. I'm a bit disappointed, since I still have unlimited data. The tethering is the main issue that absolutely makes me loathe Verizon.
On a sidenote, I've never handled the developer version of the VZN moto x. Does it still have the Motorola features, such as active display, etc?

The Dev edition and retail/moto maker variants are exactly the same software and roms.
The dev edition is only available as black front, woven white back that says "developer edition" on it, with silver accents (camera ring and buttons), 32 gig, and Moto provides the boot loader unlock code and it doesn't void the warranty.
The Moto maker is fully customizable, and Moto doesn't give the unlock code for verizon.
Thanks for the help guys! Unfortunately, I might have to jump ship to another phone that will allow me to tether. I feel like I have no control over the phone without root access, which I've always had for the past 3 years since having my first smartphone.
It's quite sad, since I actually love the rest of the phone...
Perhaps the new Nexus 6 or Droid Turbo, or watch swappa. Com for an unlocked version of the X
Like GandalfTehGray, why not just look for a Dev edition X and sell that one you just got?
root, roms, and themes.. oh my!
$$$... The dev version of almost another $100 more than my 16gb version. Of love to have the Dev edition though!
I'm currently looking into a gs3. There a root exploit floating around, so hopefully that works. Not looking forward to touch wiz
The S3 is a terrible downgrade... IMHO. My M8 went in for service and they lent me an S3....was just awful. Lol
Of course it wasn't rooted... But still awful. Feels and looks cheap. Slow. Just terrible. Should have got them to loan me a Sim for my S2...prefer it to the S3.
Yeah I already know the s3 is a step down from the moto x... I'm loving the moto so much! It just fails to do a few critical things the I've grown to need... Tether being the biggie.
I'm looking at a local rooted and bootloader unlocked s3. Hopefully that will prove my expectations wrong
Posting this from my new (to me) gs3. It indeed has an unlocked bootloader, and the previous owner already has cm11 loaded onto it. It's pretty snappy so far, and in enjoying it. So glad I don't need to put up with touchwiz!
Anyhow, I really miss active display already... And the motion activated camera launch[emoji22]
