Are you waiting for the Google edition/Developer edition?

Also, wth would the difference be at this point if they would both retain moto x features lol. I believe that is what I'm doing especially at&t and they're bootloader locking stuff. Just not sure which version and which one comes out first.

i might be waiting. I'll be considering the phone but am going to have to pay full price off contract. So if I'm going to do that, I might as well get the developer edition. However, I would really like to order the phone on opening day, so I'm hoping the Developer edition comes out same day.

I hear you, same with me. I'd have to buy off contract either way and dont feel at&t needs more of my money. But you say developer edition which would most likely be on the Motorola website? What about the Google edition version that is rumored to come out? Aren't these the same companies, why make it so confusing lol.

It would be nice to have some idea of how long we have to wait......

I defently waiting. Want my unlocked bootloader...I dont want to wait to see if someone can unlock the regular bootloader. I am on Verizon...so I also need to pay full price to keep my unlimited data

Price is what will decide it for me.

I am considering the purchase of a Developer Edition phone only because of the price of it. I am thinking it would be cheaper to purchase it from Google than it would be to buy it off contract from the carrier. But if it is the same price then I will just get it from my carrier. The colour designing of it isnt important to me.

News should come out in a few days about dev edition availability. I'm not getting the at&t one I don't think. I'm already hearing all the complaints about their annoying phone book software, and their locked BL.

The address book software doesn't get in the way. Usually it pops up on phones like the One, but on the X, I haven't seen it yet.

I'm definitely waiting for a developer unlocked edition. Don't want carrier bloat and waiting for bootloader unlock and random issues.

I'll likely return mine that I bought at AT&T when a dev edition is out or news of one. I forget how much I HATE the carrier having more control over my device than me.

Yeah...if not I'm just gonna go with the Motomaker version and unlock the bootloader another way which probably has been done already.

Question: Let's say in the future some brilliant dev-type finds a root & bootloader unlock exploit for the non-dev edition of the VZW Moto X. Would ROMs developed for that phone (the rooted/unlocked VZW stock Moto X) be compatible with the Dev Edition? Does anyone know how this has worked with previous Dev Editions?
I'm just wondering in the situation described above, whether the people who shelled out for Dev Edition early on could find themselves with a much smaller mod/dev community to draw upon than people who wait around for a potential (but maybe never coming) future unlock of the device. Would the two VZW versions of the Moto X (Dev and stock) be essentially the same device aside from bootloader, and therefore have compatibility?
I know this is all conjecture until we see an actual Dev Edition on VZW (which might not happen) but I'd be interested in thoughts.

Roms would work on both developer and regular version. One plus would be 32 GB . im hoping Verizon will get developer with the extra storage.

Well with current rumors pegging it at around $500+, I sense this phone failing commercially.
It's just too much money.
I get Moto wants this to be their "iPhone" but if you wanted to massively pull the rug out from under their feet, you would stick this thing's non contract price around the rumors for the 5C price, which is $300-$400.

FWIW, I haven't seen coverage clearly saying that there will not be an AT&T Developer Edition. Where did you hear that?
I don't have the source right now, but I remember reading early on that there would be a "Google Play Edition" separate from Developer Edition, and that this would be AT&T/TMO compatible. If there truly is not an AT&T Dev Edition, maybe this is a substitute?

The version sold on Google Play will be the unlocked version compatible with both AT&T and T-Mobile, just like the other phones on Google Play. There will be 2 separate Developer Editions, 1 for Verizon, and 1 for AT&T (also technically compatible with T-Mobile since both use 1900Mhz for 4G). The key here is that the Google Play version will likely be only in 16GB, whereas both the Developer Editions will be 32GB.

Isn't the Google Play version just conjecture at this point? Motorola hasn't announced that yet.
The only thing that Motorola has announced is that there will be a developer edition of the Moto X. Have they announced anything about the Dev edition (i.e. a Verizon version and an AT&T version) or are those rumours that are making the rounds?

As for the Dev edition, you are correct. There is indeed a executive source from Motorola who mentioned the availability of the Verizon and North American version of the Dev edition.

I'm glad there's going to be a Verizon Developer edition. I was a little nervous. I'm hoping there will be some word on the Droids being rooted before the Verizon Developer edition comes out. I'm loving my Droid Mini it's the phone I've had my eyes on since it was announced and have loved the last week with it but I need root and the Motorola bootloader has been quite a pain in the days of late. Either way when things get pumping I'm pretty sure there are going to be some very great stable roms for all 4 phones since porting is going to require such little work if any really

On August 2, 2013 Punit Soni, who heads Moto X for Motorola said the following on his Google Plus page:
Perhaps this got missed in the launch hullabaloo ...
Moto X on the Sprint, US Cellular, Rogers and T-Mobile networks will have an unlockable bootloader, and in addition, we will be offering a Verizon Wireless Developer Edition and a general North American Developer Edition.

The PocketNow article cites Guy Kawasaki as the source of the information on the Google Play edition. Kawasaki is an official Motorola employee, who was picked up from Apple last year. Guy confirmed it in a google hangouts session he had conducted a few days back.

From someone (me) who really prefers the GP editions (I love plane vanilla AOSP): Why does there need to be a GPe of the Moto X? My understanding is outside of active notifications and touchless voice, this is pretty much AOSP. And the hardware is purpose built for those features (extra sensors, voice processor) as well anyway...

Yes, thats exactly the reason why the GPe MotoX will still come with all the software features and optimizations, because it is essentially just stock otherwise, and built to blend in seamlessly with the UI. The reason it will be on GP is because it will be unlocked and unbranded, and have Tmobile AWS support. The GP edition is the only way you can buy a MotoX for use on Tmobile, since they won't be carrying it in the stores or online on their website.

Its AOSP like on top of moto blur from what I've been reading. I'm not sure how the GP edition would be completely AOSP without those moto blur features? Its not too clear on many parts lol.

It loses no MotoBlur features. Its the ATT software with no bloat and SIM unlocked/bootloader unlockable.

There's no Moto Blur on this device. Just stock Android with a couple of additions (and those seem to be showing up on the Play Store too). Moto Blur was a heavy skin on top of Android and that seems to have gone away completely!

Unfortunately I doubt the Nexus line will ever come back to ATT with subsidy (I'm just a poor boy from a poor family..) and my family wants me to get my own phone bill this weekend (and I get a nice discount on ATT through my job) so I'm 99 percent sure I'm going Moto X.

I don't know how you can be sure of something so unlikely to happen again. More likely that Verizon give everyone unlimited data back IMO.. (Not gonna happen).

[Q] Getting a Moto X in the UK and Nexus 5

Hey everyone.
I was thinking about importing a Moto X to the UK, but I'm concerned that it may not work. I reserched about the bands here but I don't know any really realiable source of information and I haven't been living here for long to know much about it (I've moved about 3 weeks ago). Would it be ok to get one from eBay and just pop in a SIM?
Also, I feel like I should wait for the Nexus 5 official release to compare them properly, although the voice features in the Moto X are really driving me to get it. What do you guys think? Is it really worth waiting?

Get the developer edition GSM and you'll be fine, it will be compatible with any carrier and it will get updates as soon as they are available, plus the bootloader is unlockable so u can have fun hacking it like a nexus, I think the moto X beats de Nexus 5, from the active display which the Nex5 can't have because it has an IPS display, to the lack of touchless control since the nex5 has no independant chip just for language procesing, so ye basically the X is a Nexus with somme really useful features added, great batery life, and awesome form factor, go with the X bro...

One little thing: there's this auction going on at eBay and the price is half the other Xs on sale, but it doesn't mention being dev edition, although some other one does... The description doesn't clarify much either, it does mention networks types but you can never be too sure...

It looks nice, that'll work for any carrier that uses gsm, if u can get it, get it, but I think the bids are gonna get much higher than that with the days, If I were u I'd rather get the dev edition, which is 530 pounds there in the uk website...

The one in the ebay listing might be a Rogers phone that has been unlocked. Its made in China so its not a US phone, and it has the Industry Canada info on it. Rogers is the only provider in Canada that has the Moto X. Assuming it is that would mean the bootloader can be unlocked via Motorola. Based on the FCC ID its a XT-1058 model (same as AT&T) if you want to see what bands it supports.

[Q] Moto X Regular vs Developer Edition

Basically my questions are simple, I tried Googling quite extensively but cannot find a comprehensive answer.
Moto X Motomaker vs the Moto X Developer Edition pro and cons...
Here is what I think I know
Motomaker (MM from this point forward) is how you make it, has 16 and 32gb models and comes with a locked bootloader that must be unlocked to flash a ROM or change the fancy things like battery icons and the framework mods. Must wait for verizon to push updates to you at their own rate.. let me know if i'm wrong..
Developer Edition (DE from this for forward) is only 2 tone black and white and only available in 32gb. Bootloader is unlocked stock, can flash roms, change framework, custom apps, mod and tethering, android updates available whenever Google releases them or just come to XDA and find a leak.
I'm wondering if getting the DE is going to be worth the cost and if i comes BLANK with no Verizon bloat on-board. can i still use active notification and camera gesture etc if i flash a ROM?
I understand that the idea flashing a ROM is to get as close as humanly possible to stock android which it already is.
I'm going to be purchasing tomorrow so if you are all out there a timely response would be awesome!
On a side note I'm getting this phone to replace an S4 thats limping along with Safestrap and a Nexus Launcher.

If you want to run latest versions of android as soon as possible, Developer Edition might not be the ticket. As you can see already, carriers have started to push out kitkat earlier than motorola itself.

I'm in the same boat. I think the idea of the Moto X is great especially since it's getting the updates in a timely manner. I wonder though if the Developer Edition would be any different. Just because it's a Developer Edition doesn't mean it's a Google Play Edition meaning it will probably only receive the update when the Moto Maker X gets an update. That being the case (if I'm correct). Should I purchase the Developer Edition over the Motor Maker X. The only thing I would need to do is wifi tether since I am still on unlimited data and use it daily.

I have the Verizon Dev edition, and the only reason why I got it was so that I can unlock it and root it. With Dev editions you can only get white. If you want to unlock and root and are on AT&T or Verizon, then get the Dev edition, otherwise just get the Moto Maker edition.

What have you done with your Dev Edition Moto X that you couldn't have done with the Moto Maker Version? And I'm asking what have you done, not what you plan on doing. Given the opportunity to do it all over again would you get the Dev Edition again or would you get a Moto Maker version?

Got the Dev edition and have not even unlocked the bootloader. Its that good . was thinking about it to install viper audio mod but have not yet

I have unlocked and rooted my phone, I have installed Xposed and Gravity Box, and Greenify. I also plan on changing the bootloader, but have not found one I liked.
I believe you can root the Moto X without unlocking the bootloader, but from what I understand it is a headache when OTAs come through and there are chances of it bricking the phone. Since I was able to unlock the bootloader, I was able to flash TWRP and flash SU. And I don't have to worry about OTAs screwing up my phone.
But I need to stress this, do not spend the extra money on Dev edition if you are not on Verizon or AT&T, the Moto Xs from Motomaker can be unlocked.
The only added bonus the Dev edition brings is that unlocking it does not void the warranty which is nice because there can be cases which arise when it is a manufacture defect which the warranty would cover and it is nice to have that protection. But if you unlock a non Dev edition, it will void the warranty.

I personally would go with the Dev edition. There is always bound to be something I want to do to it. Plus future proofing

I did not unlock the bootloader until last week, which is also when I finally got time to unlock it and root the phone. But the change in warranty policy was a nice push.
I recommend unlocking and rooting your phone, I really missed Greenify and Titanium Backup. It might be a placebo effect or being on break last week I didn't use the phone as I normally do, but Greenify really helped the battery life. I went almost 22 hrs and about 2 hrs of screen time with no recharge couple times, using (Snapchat, Chrome, Reddit News, SMS, Hangouts, Phone, Plume, Maps, CBS Sports) heavily. Hopefully when I go back to normal usage this occurs again.

I should have been thinking about this a lot sooner than tonight. I'm leaning towards the Moto Maker edition for the obvious reasons of the color options. All I need is root the main thing I care about is tethering. And if I'm not mistaken there are apps on the market that will allow me to do that without root. I currently have a rooted Verizon Galaxy Note 3 and the only thing I use root for is tethering.

I went for the developer edition. I think it is worth the money..

"flagship product" - Motomaker is advertised, Dev edition is not known to all.
"Investment in quality products" - they are both the same phone.

I'm planning to buy the Moto X today. I live in Asia/Middle East. Will the T-Mobile Off contract version work? Because i want to customize my phone through moto maker. I know LTE most likely most wont work, but my main concern is will it detect any sim and 3g data should work. Thanks for the help in advance.

yes t-mobile is sim unlocked and 3g should work.

[Q] Thinking of buying the 2013 Moto X

Hi,
I currently own a Nexus S, customized with AOSP Kitkat ROM. While this is a wonderful device, I think the time has come to change it. 512MB of RAM is just way too low for KitKat and newer apps that are RAM hungry. However, I don't like big phones. I like my Nexus S because it is small and fits everywhere. My brother has a Nexus 5 and it just doesn't fit in my hand. The screen is beautiful, but it is too big for my hand.
I was passing by a carrier store last week and came accross the Moto X and Moto G, both last generation. Both are the same physical size, even though the screen on the Moto G is 4.5inches and the X is 4.7. They fit pretty well in my hands and I love their design. It is also a great thing that it is running nearly stock Android with Motorola applications.
I know the Moto X isn't the most powerful phone on the market, and this isn't what I'm looking for. I'm looking for a nice upgrade with features that I like and a device that feels good in my hands.
Is the device worth it ? Are the Motorola extra features (Moto Assist, Active Display, Touchless controls) working fine ? I can easily imagine my Moto X docked in my car and me asking it for directions or change songs. I can't do that with the Nexus S; it is way too weak in power.
Do you know if I have to keep the stock launcher to get those features ? I really enjoy Apex.
How's the battery life ? I am usually not power hungry as I don't play games on my phone or even watch videos. I listen to music, check rss feeds and social networks.
Lastely, what would you change to the (old) Moto X ? From the reviews that I have read, I understand that the screen isn't incredible, but would you say that it is an issue ?

The screen is pretty good as far as I can tell. Better in direct sunlight compared to LCD screens which I had cup my hand to be able to read clearly. That said, the moto features work but I don't make use of them. And you can use any alternative launcher if you like; I use action launcher btw. Is it worth the money? That's up to you. I paid $324 for the 32GB version and it is worth what I paid for it.

What carrier? If vzw?
Get a Maxx if you can cheap enough. Much brighter display

Was in the same situation as u 2 months ago, coming from a droid 3. Was looking at moto x and maxx, but battery was a huge plus for me, and went with the maxx, and I couldn't be happier with my choice. Although, it is a 5 inch screen.

I am in Canada, so the device costs more. In fact, I can't really buy the device anymore in Canada and would have to import it from the US. More of a hassle, but may be worth it. I could get the 16GB XT1058 for about 300$USD shipped.

I am currently with Koodo (Telus) in Canada, but I would buy an unlocked device or unlock it myself. Rogers and Fido had the Moto X as an exclusive here in Canada. You couldn't buy the Moto X anywhere else than these carriers store. So if I wanna get a Moto X on Koodo, I must unlock it anyway. As for the Droid Maxx, I've read many times that the radio isn't working properly in Canada. I would have to dig a bit.
On another note, I was looking at how to root the Moto X and it is much more complicated than my Nexus S. If I can get a Dev edition it would be easier but they are hard to find (and not cheap). Gotta love Nexus devices for that reason !

You can buy an X from carriers still. Mine was 18 bucks to sim unlock. (Rogers phone and I'm on Telus)
And there's many used on kijiji.

Really ? I've done some stores and no fido or rogers had stock on Moto X, although they had it in display.
So you have the XT1058 ? According to the Moto X guides thread, how complex rootinng is, depends on what version of Android is installed. Do you run KitKat or JellyBean ?

The best buy in the last couple of years. I definitly recommend it. I always was the type of person, who felt like having to fiddle a lot with the phone, to fulfill my needs. (I came from LG devices). I always rooted and installed custom ROMs. But believe it or not, I still dont feel the need to root or install a different Software, since the stock ROM runs amazingly great on my phone. I also had the G in my hands, but the X display is way better. Camera... Well it is not the best, but also not as bad as many said. Battery is amazin. And although I already had phones with more capacity, this one lasts longer by far. I also listen to a LOT of music and the phone still gets me through the day quite easily. But there is one thing I would consider. The new 2014 X. For me personally, the screen is too big, but maybe it will be just right for you? And yeah it does not have killer specs, but the phone is definitly smoother than other flagship phones, which often laag due to the extra ("great"/"special") custom UI.
Those are my 2 cents. Hope it helps a bit

Yup, xt1058. Unlocked on moto site, then just used fastboot for custom recovery and rooted. Done. No different than rooting a Nexus. Simple.
I did all that in jelly bean, but it's no different on KitKat.
I don't remember the site I used to unlock Sim, but they're a dime a dozen. I think it was cellularunlocker. Or something like that.
I did have to try the moto site the night I got it, and the next day after work before it worked. The unlock site is glitchy.

OK thanks, I'll check the Moto website. If a get a XT1058 from the US or from Rogers/Fido, I guess I can root it using Moto website and it will work on Koodo. Rooting shouldn't affect the bands and carrier. From what I know, AT&T and Telus/Koodo uses the same bands.
The Complete Moto X Guides/Information Thread got all me confused with downgrading from KitKat to Jelly Bean and flashing the 4.2.2 camera app. Is the downgrade procedure only for Locked Bootloaders (which the XT1058 isn't) ?

Downloading was going from 4.4 to 4.2.2. That's gone as of 4.4 2. No more downgrading. Not without great risk.
There's no Telus moto x... I don't think. Was only Rogers and fido . Maybe I'm wrong. I got a Rogers one new, but off a guy. I just unlocked it to use on Telus. Maybe there's a telus model... But I didn't think so.
But remember, whatever model number it may be, an AT&T phone can't be unlocked. Avoid getting that if you can.

I am looking at new phones, so this is why it is a bit more expensive. I don't know if you are in the US or CA, but the Moto G will sell for about 225$CDN here and the new Moto X will for around 450-500$ if not more. Cellphones in Canada are more expensive than in the US. Pretty much like anything else on the market...

I thought you were talking bootloader unlocked, which AT&T can't. Yes, Sim unlock sure.
But you risk not having root. Depending what version it comes with and whether you're willing to pay 45 to bootloader unlocked, if you're on the list for the China Middleman.

Thanks for pointing that out. I didn't notice that AT&T has a locked bootloader. I thought either locked or unlocked bootloader was model dependant (XT1058,60,etc) and not carrier dependant. Let the search continue. My best bet would be to find a Rogers one
