New moto x owner from galaxy nexus - need clarification - Moto X Q&A

So I just picked up a Moto x after having owned a Galaxy nexus for about a year and a half. So there are a few things that currently bother me, and seems like there are no fixes to date.
Moto X (2013), Verizon with unlimited data, OS 4.4.4, non-dev edition, bootloader locked and no root access.
1. There are no solutions to unlock the bootloader as of today.
2. There are no solutions to root and ROM.
3. I cannot use the native hotspot tether feature on my unlimited plan. Has anyone tried the clockworkmod paid tether app ($5) or any other tether app? Can I USB tether from my phone to my Nexus 7 or another phone?
4. Can I somehow remove (unlikely) or at least hide the bloatware?
My browsing of the moto x forums has basically told me that I'm stuck with some upgraded hardware and some highly restricted software comapred to my last phone. I'm very much enjoying the phone and it's new intricacies that my galaxy nexus didn't offer, but any insight would be greatly appreciated.

I believe you are SoL on bootloader unlock/root so 1-3 are out I believe. 4 you can go into settings>apps>disable for the ones you don't want to see.

@rice923
For #1 you are correct. With the NON-Developer Edition Verizon Moto X (XT1060), the bootloader is locked. Moto doesn't give out the bootloader unlock codes for Verizon, ATT and Republic Wireless. Your only option at this point would be IF the China Middleman starts responding again, to buy a code from him.
With a locked bootloader there is no root, and no way to disable write protection when on 4.4.4. Past root exploits don't work. The latest is Sunshine, but it doesn't work on 4.4.4 devices. see -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/general/request-help-exploit-moto-x-bl-t2828471 or see -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2792487
For #2 and #3, they require an unlocked bootloader.
For #4. Some of the bloat can be "disabled" via Settings -> Apps -> All... open the app you want, and see if the Disable button is there. 3rd party apps to FREEZE wont work because you are not rooted and write protection is still enabled.

Thanks for confirming my findings. I'm a bit disappointed, since I still have unlimited data. The tethering is the main issue that absolutely makes me loathe Verizon.
On a sidenote, I've never handled the developer version of the VZN moto x. Does it still have the Motorola features, such as active display, etc?

The Dev edition and retail/moto maker variants are exactly the same software and roms.
The dev edition is only available as black front, woven white back that says "developer edition" on it, with silver accents (camera ring and buttons), 32 gig, and Moto provides the boot loader unlock code and it doesn't void the warranty.
The Moto maker is fully customizable, and Moto doesn't give the unlock code for verizon.

Thanks for the help guys! Unfortunately, I might have to jump ship to another phone that will allow me to tether. I feel like I have no control over the phone without root access, which I've always had for the past 3 years since having my first smartphone.
It's quite sad, since I actually love the rest of the phone...

Perhaps the new Nexus 6 or Droid Turbo, or watch swappa. Com for an unlocked version of the X

Like GandalfTehGray, why not just look for a Dev edition X and sell that one you just got?
root, roms, and themes.. oh my!

$$$... The dev version of almost another $100 more than my 16gb version. Of love to have the Dev edition though!
I'm currently looking into a gs3. There a root exploit floating around, so hopefully that works. Not looking forward to touch wiz

The S3 is a terrible downgrade... IMHO. My M8 went in for service and they lent me an S3....was just awful. Lol
Of course it wasn't rooted... But still awful. Feels and looks cheap. Slow. Just terrible. Should have got them to loan me a Sim for my S2...prefer it to the S3.

Yeah I already know the s3 is a step down from the moto x... I'm loving the moto so much! It just fails to do a few critical things the I've grown to need... Tether being the biggie.
I'm looking at a local rooted and bootloader unlocked s3. Hopefully that will prove my expectations wrong

Posting this from my new (to me) gs3. It indeed has an unlocked bootloader, and the previous owner already has cm11 loaded onto it. It's pretty snappy so far, and in enjoying it. So glad I don't need to put up with touchwiz!
Anyhow, I really miss active display already... And the motion activated camera launch[emoji22]

[Q] Moto X Regular vs Developer Edition

Basically my questions are simple, I tried Googling quite extensively but cannot find a comprehensive answer.
Moto X Motomaker vs the Moto X Developer Edition pro and cons...
Here is what I think I know
Motomaker (MM from this point forward) is how you make it, has 16 and 32gb models and comes with a locked bootloader that must be unlocked to flash a ROM or change the fancy things like battery icons and the framework mods. Must wait for verizon to push updates to you at their own rate.. let me know if i'm wrong..
Developer Edition (DE from this for forward) is only 2 tone black and white and only available in 32gb. Bootloader is unlocked stock, can flash roms, change framework, custom apps, mod and tethering, android updates available whenever Google releases them or just come to XDA and find a leak.
I'm wondering if getting the DE is going to be worth the cost and if i comes BLANK with no Verizon bloat on-board. can i still use active notification and camera gesture etc if i flash a ROM?
I understand that the idea flashing a ROM is to get as close as humanly possible to stock android which it already is.
I'm going to be purchasing tomorrow so if you are all out there a timely response would be awesome!
On a side note I'm getting this phone to replace an S4 thats limping along with Safestrap and a Nexus Launcher.
Who's your carrier? T-mobile and Sprint allow you to unlock your bootloader http://www.droid-life.com/2013/09/09/t-mobile-moto-x-added-to-motorola-bootloader-unlock-program/
If you have Verizon or AT&T you'll need to get the dev edition.

Verizon Wireless..
Dev edition it is

If you want to run latest versions of android as soon as possible, Developer Edition might not be the ticket. As you can see already, carriers have started to push out kitkat earlier than motorola itself.

I'm in the same boat. I think the idea of the Moto X is great especially since it's getting the updates in a timely manner. I wonder though if the Developer Edition would be any different. Just because it's a Developer Edition doesn't mean it's a Google Play Edition meaning it will probably only receive the update when the Moto Maker X gets an update. That being the case (if I'm correct). Should I purchase the Developer Edition over the Motor Maker X. The only thing I would need to do is wifi tether since I am still on unlimited data and use it daily.
I have the Verizon Dev edition, and the only reason why I got it was so that I can unlock it and root it. With Dev editions you can only get white. If you want to unlock and root and are on AT&T or Verizon, then get the Dev edition, otherwise just get the Moto Maker edition.

What have you done with your Dev Edition Moto X that you couldn't have done with the Moto Maker Version? And I'm asking what have you done, not what you plan on doing. Given the opportunity to do it all over again would you get the Dev Edition again or would you get a Moto Maker version?
Got the Dev edition and have not even unlocked the bootloader. Its that good . was thinking about it to install viper audio mod but have not yet

I have unlocked and rooted my phone, I have installed Xposed and Gravity Box, and Greenify. I also plan on changing the bootloader, but have not found one I liked.
I believe you can root the Moto X without unlocking the bootloader, but from what I understand it is a headache when OTAs come through and there are chances of it bricking the phone. Since I was able to unlock the bootloader, I was able to flash TWRP and flash SU. And I don't have to worry about OTAs screwing up my phone.
But I need to stress this, do not spend the extra money on Dev edition if you are not on Verizon or AT&T, the Moto Xs from Motomaker can be unlocked.
The only added bonus the Dev edition brings is that unlocking it does not void the warranty which is nice because there can be cases which arise when it is a manufacture defect which the warranty would cover and it is nice to have that protection. But if you unlock a non Dev edition, it will void the warranty.
I personally would go with the Dev edition. There is always bound to be something I want to do to it. Plus future proofing

I did not unlock the bootloader until last week, which is also when I finally got time to unlock it and root the phone. But the change in warranty policy was a nice push.
I recommend unlocking and rooting your phone, I really missed Greenify and Titanium Backup. It might be a placebo effect or being on break last week I didn't use the phone as I normally do, but Greenify really helped the battery life. I went almost 22 hrs and about 2 hrs of screen time with no recharge couple times, using (Snapchat, Chrome, Reddit News, SMS, Hangouts, Phone, Plume, Maps, CBS Sports) heavily. Hopefully when I go back to normal usage this occurs again.
I should have been thinking about this a lot sooner than tonight. I'm leaning towards the Moto Maker edition for the obvious reasons of the color options. All I need is root the main thing I care about is tethering. And if I'm not mistaken there are apps on the market that will allow me to do that without root. I currently have a rooted Verizon Galaxy Note 3 and the only thing I use root for is tethering.
I went for the developer edition. I think it is worth the money..

" Perhaps faster upgrade process" - nope. Same for everyone. I believe motomaker version got it first...
"flagship product" - Motomaker is advertised, Dev edition is not known to all.
"Investment in quality products" - they are both the same phone.

I'm planning to buy the Moto X today. I live in Asia/Middle East. Will the T-Mobile Off contract version work? Because i want to customize my phone through moto maker. I know LTE most likely most wont work, but my main concern is will it detect any sim and 3g data should work. Thanks for the help in advance.

VZ - To DE or not?

So my Verizon S3 is getting long in the tooth. I have unlimited data (and they will have to pry this from my cold dead hands) so the Moto X seems like a great phone not to mention the off contract pricing.
My question is do I go with the DE or not? I rooted my S3 and enjoyed a basic rom but really loved having wifi tethering more than anything else. I wouldnt necessarily want to root the regular x since it has great software going for it already. Plus I would like to customize the phone as well and with the DE you can't right?
Just seeing what some peoples opinions are and why they made the decision to get the phone they did and if you would do it differently. Also, do you think the phone will go on sale again soon? I know the edu discount is running but its currently only $10 off the regular price. I have to figure that soon they will try and purge these with the supposed replacement coming end of summer. Just wondering if anyone has any inside info
If you want tethering, buy a DE. Or buy a used retail version that hasn't been updated to 4.4.2 but that would mean giving up on any updates/OTAs until a root method is found for 4.4.2 and above. Or a used retail/MotoMaker version with an unlocked bootloader which I highly doubt people would be willing to give up.
What leads you to believe that you can't modify a DE? That's the only version that will ensure you'll always have root.

Sorry if that came out wrong. I meant customizing as in MotoMaker customizing. I believe the DE's only come in white/black woven correct? No options for wood backs, accents, etct?

Correct. The DE version comes only as black front, woven white back, and silver accents (camera ring, and buttons), with 32 Gig, and an unlockable bootloader. Don't like the colors? You can do something like get a dbrand skin, or use a case.
If you want to tether on an unlimited data plan, you need to root and disable write protection.
If you want to ROOT and disable write protection, get a DE. Unlocking its bootloader is easy (codes are available directly from Moto), doesn't void the warranty, disables write protection, and ensures you can root any android version/ROM moto and vzw push.
On Verizon, the Retail and Moto Maker X has a locked bootloader that can't be unlocked (unless by some miracle that person selling via the Chinese web site should ever get out of hot water and start selling the codes again). The exploits used to Root and Disable Write Protection on Android 4.4 and lower for the X with locked bootloader have been patched/blocked with 4.4.2. So if you have 4.4.2 on your phone you can't root, and write protection can not be disabled (meaning any changes you could make should you root, would be lost at power off/on). If you have 4.4, the processes are more complex to perform, then you must block any OTA if you want to keep root and write protection disabled.
If you are on an unlimited data plan, you'll need to buy at full retail price anyway. So, it comes down to a $50 price difference between a 32gig Moto Maker and Developer Edition (based on today's prices). Moto Maker you can customize the looks, but will have locked bootloader that you can't root if you have 4.4.2, or want 4.4.2 or future roms. Where as the Developer Edition at might not look the way you want, but you can root, flash custom roms, etc. no matter what rom is on your phone. And of course the root/disable write protect process is way easier on a Dev Edition too.
Personally, Dev Edition + case is my choice.
When I got my X, the Dev Edition was the only 32gig option available for Verizon. Having unlimited data and wanting to tether, I knew I wanted to root. So even though there was a MUCH bigger price difference then ($649.99 for the Dev Edition), I got the dev edition. I do NOT regret my decision.

You sir have made my decision! Thank you! I never wanted the look of a phone to matter but the motomaker changed my mind! haha. But if I want certain things and since the price is so close I might as well go with the DE. Thanks guys!
I would also recommend getting DE. I have retail and lucked out getting an unlock code from the Chinese middleman, but that's no longer possible. I also have unlimited data and if I were in your shoes, I would get the DE. Yes, it sucks they won't let you customize it (WHY THE HELL NOT?!) but if you want guaranteed root and unlock, go DE. Plus, DE gets 32GB

I agree about the (WHY THE HELL NOT?!) question? Makes no sense except maybe it helps the idiot Verizon employees know the difference! haha. But yeah sounds like the DE is the way to go. Now just wondering when the next sale will be so the DE will drop below $400!
There are some videos and people selling different backs.
I'm a lucky MotoMaker version that got unlocked. If the DE edition had just been plain black or white I would have chose it though.
DE for sure. MotoMaker is overrated in my opinion and the DE will have a better resale value down the line. Plus the ease of mind of always having easy root.

Upgrading to Moto X from AOSP Galaxy S3

I am currently running an AOSP rom, CarbonROM, on my VZW Galaxy S3 and really enjoy its speed, smoothness and customizability.
I am looking to upgrade to a VZW Moto X and just have a few questions.
Straight out of the box, will the Moto X be faster and smoother than the AOSP GS3?
I would like run a Blur-based ROM on the Moto X, but understand that I will be unable to root it if the phone comes with 4.2.2 right? How likely will the phone come pre-installed with 4.2.2 if I buy one from a Verizon store right now? THanks.
EDIT: If I am ultimately unable or unwilling to root the phone, could I get something similar to CM's PieControls or be able to slide up from my Home virtual key and launch custom apps from the ring (not sure if this is a stock Android feature)? I heard something about Xposed + Gravity Box? Could I run these modules without rooting?
Since the default OS is so close to vanilla Android, how much of a speed improvement could I expect if I run an AOSP rom?
I've only had this phone for a day, but from what I understand 4.2.2 has root. The current FW is 4.4.2 and does not have root. The Moto X is much snappier than my s3 and even my note 3 out of the box. I have LMT launcher installed on my device and it is working perfectly. As far as custom apps from the home key ring, I haven't seen anything so far and I don't think there is an option without root but I could be wrong. I do know that Xposed requires root.
Sent from my XT1058 using Tapatalk
Better get the phone and get the BL unlock code while you still can and do it quick so you can be able to root 4.4.2
MOTO X
4.2.2 and 4.4 on the X can be rooted. 4.4.2, the current ROM, can not be.
If you want usable root on the X you need two parts 1. Root Exploit, and 2. An Exploit that allows for disabling Write Protection.
When Write Protection is enabled (the phone's default state with locked bootloader, or the state you are in after you take the 4.4.2 OTA), any changes made to /system, or the like, (including, but not limited to, App installs, file modifications, deletions, renames, etc) are not permanent and are lost at power off/on.
Even if you have root, but lost Write Protection, any apps you've installed that need to write to system can't permanently save their changes (you have to re-do every time your phone powers off/on), and any Root type app, or app that gets installed to /system after WP is enabled will be lost at power off/on.
MotoWpNoMo was used on 4.4. and below to Disable Write Protection. Part of the 4.4.2 update patches the exploit that MotoWpNoMo used, so it wont work on 4.4.2.
SlapMyMoto/RockMyMoto/etc, used on 4.4 and lower to root, involved downgrading the rom to use an exploit in 4.2.2 to gain root and then following a process to upgrade to 4.4. But with 4.4.2 you can't downgrade the rom safely, without risk of bricking your phone, anymore.
So if you want to ensure you can root, consider getting the Dev Edition Moto X if you are on Verizon. Here are a few reasons why...
You can get the bootloader unlock code for free via Moto's web site.(not available for the VZW Retail and Moto Maker editions) - they are unique to each phone.
Getting the bootloader unlock code (and using it) doesn't void the warranty (like it does on the Retail and Moto Maker editions)
Once the bootloader is unlocked you can root & disable write protection, no matter what ROM is on your phone.
You could install custom or 3rd party roms if you wish.
If you get a warranty exchange/replacement you can still get the bootloader unlock code from Moto's web site..
While the Chinese website/middleman is available again to PURCHASE bootloader unlock codes for the Retail and Moto Maker edition, there is no guarantee it will remain available, or that your code will be in the data base he has. (think about if you need a replacement phone for some reason)
Cost is not much different than if you need to purchase your X at full retail (to keep unlimited data plan, or because you are not eligible for "upgrade" pricing).
You don't want to take the chance that the new phone might still ship with either 4.2.2 or 4.4 and can be rooted with the SlapMyMoto process and you can use MotoWpNoMo to disable write protection, if the Chinese web site/middle man disappears again.
Why to not get a Dev Edition...
you don't care about ever rooting
you are eligible for "upgrade" pricing so you want to save money
you are willing to take the chance on buying the unlock code from the Chinese Site/Middle Man while its available again, and are not worried about having to get a bootloader unlock code for a replacement phone in the future.
You want to customize the look of your phone. i.e. The Black Face, Woven White back, and Silver accents (buttons and camera ring) of the Developer Edition just doesn't appeal to you and you don't want to use a case to cover it, and are against dBrand skins and the like.
you don't mind voiding the phone's warranty by using the code purchased via the Chinese Site/Middle Man while it is available again.
You don't mind taking a chance that the new phone might still ship with either 4.2.2 or 4.4 and can be rooted with the SlapMyMoto process and you can use MotoWpNoMo to disable write protection, rather than having to buy a bootloader unlock code from the Chinese website/middleman.
You are OK not running custom or 3rd party or custom roms (unless you PURCHASE the boot loader unlock code from the Chinese Site/Middleman)

your OP also mentions wanting to run a Blur-based ROM... "based" implies not stock. As mentioned previously, If you get 4.2.2 or 4.4 on it, you can root and disable write protection. You can retain root while upgrading to 4.4.2, but you lose write protection disable with no way to get it back. But rooting and disabling write protection will not allow you to run 3rd party or custom roms. You can only run stock Moto roms unless you unlock the bootloader. When the bootloader is locked, the phone will refuse any Non-Moto signed components (like recovery, system, etc) which are needed for the 3rd party/custom roms.
I can't speak to how much faster the X might be compared to the S3 with AOSP because my T-Mobile S3 is still stock. My VZW Dev Ed X is as fast as my S4's are (VZW, T-Mo and ATT) if not faster. And it does feel faster than my stock Note 3's (T-Mo and ATT).
I haven't seen CM's PieControls so I don't know what they are, or what is needed for install.
Xposted + Gravity box require root. And if you don't have write protection disabled too, you'd have to reconfigure it each power off/on.
If you buy at a Verizon retail store, they will likely immediately install any available updates (i.e. upgrade the phone to 4.4.2) before letting you leave the store, even if the phone has 4.2.2 out of the box. Several people have posted about this already. And they said they were not given an option. I do not know if they will honor a request to not perform any software updates given before they start to setup the new phone for you.
If you get a Dev Edition or any Moto X sold outside US, you will be able to unlock its bootloader which makes root possible and super easy regardless of Android version.

---------- Post added at 07:43 AM ---------- Previous post was at 07:25 AM ----------
your OP also mentions wanting to run a Blur-based ROM...

Thanks a lot for the very detailed information.
So to be sure, Blur-based ROMS such as Eclipse will require root and an unlocked BL? If I purchase a code from the China/Middle Man, does this solve all the problems? I will have an unlocked BL, root, and WP disabled and can install custom ROMs?
So if my phone ships with 4.4.2, then I can't even install Xposed + Gravity Box on it?
Are all Verizon phones locked now? I was originally going to get an S4 as a replacement for my S3, before I found out that the S4 was also incredibly difficult to root/flash custom ROMs onto.
Will the Moto X be my best bet if I am on contract with Verizon and want a "as close to stock Android as possible" experience?

Eclipse needs you to be rooted on 4.4.2, or on 4.4 rooted w/Safestrap.
Yes bootloader unlocking (either dev edition, or getting code from China/middleman) solves this.
The only difference in getting the code from the Chinese Website/Middleman vs having the Dev Edition and getting the code from Moto, is 1. where you get the code from, and 2. warranty status. The rest, including rooting, flashing, etc. is exactly the same.

Yes Xposed needs root. Since GraivtyBox uses Xposed, it too needs root.

Yes. Such is the nature of Android maturing. Most of the root and unlock processes have been exploiting bugs and vulnerabilities in code. As the code gets fixed, less usable exploits. THe S4 had a vulnerable bootloader initially that could be hacked (Loki) which was later patched. The X had its own which lead to PwnMyMoto/RockMyMoto/SlapMyMoto and MotoWpNoMo, which have been patched.

I have really only followed Moto, Samsung and HTC lately. Sammy has TouchWiz, HTC has Sense. They make their phones different enough from "stock" android. Sammy (S3, S4, NOte 2, Note3 anyway) has a custom calendar app, custom SMS/MMS app, custom contacts app, gallery, camera, and more. Along with a lot of Samsung bloat, I mean "features" that I usually disable anyway.
The X has no "skin" on top. It is as close to stock android as you can get. Yes it has a custom Camera app, gallery app and calendar app. But the Google calendar app (available in PlayStore) is nearly identical, and I didn't keep the Google calendar from the Playstore on the phone after trying it. There are a few Moto specific things like active display, always on/listening voice commands, that stock Android doesn't have, but there isn't too much else to get in the way, or that isn't useful on the phone. In fact, on the X, I haven't disabled anything.
I'd play it safe and spend the extra 50 bucks on the Dev edition.
The Chinese unlock sale could end today, or tomorrow.... And you'll likely be on 4 4.2 and not be able to root. Maybe ever.
Plus as said.... You keep your warranty when you unlock the bootloader on the Dev edition only.

Oh what? The Developer Edition is only an extra $50? The code from the China site is $45 already right?
Can I buy the Dev Edition at a Verizon Store or Authorized Reseller? Or must I order it online?
I can't seem to find the option for purchasing a Dev Ed on the Verizon website and the Motorola website only offer the option of purchasing it for 450 (presumably off-contract) and gives no option for purchasing on-contract.

Thank you KidJoe, your very detailed responses have been incredibly helpful. If the Dev Edition is indeed only an extra $50, I would defintely try to snag one of those instead of a retail version.

You have to get it direct from Moto.
They this link -> http://www.motorola.com/us/consumer...Verizon/moto-x-developer-edition-verizon.html
And it is only sold at "off contract" or full retail price. Otherwise you'd see more people with it.
I'm pretty sure moto still has a 0% finance option if you don't want to shell out all the cash at once. My recommendation is Dev edition. I'm on T-Mobile which allows unlocking and I still got the Dev edition to be on the safe side.
I went from a Verizon GS3 with CM to a Nexus 5 and MotoX Dev edition on T-Mobile. The MotoX is FASTER by a long shot, only to be surpassed by the nexus barely. You won't regret the switch.

[Q] Recently bought "unlocked" Moto X

And it appears to be a Verizon moto X with towel Pie installed on it. So technically unlocked but I'm a little dubious as to whether I should just return this phone.
I didn't know what towel pie was at the time and didn't know the phone wasn't actually unlocked. The guy I bought it from said that verizon moto X phones were just naturally unlocked. I didn't really find that credible at the time but assumed the phone was nonetheless unlocked now.
After playing with the phone, I find that its not actually fully unlocked but rather has this program running on it that fights the Verizon firmware to effectively make it unlocked.
Here is what I want. I want this permanently rooted without any program running in the background to reroot the phone every time. And I want all the verizon logos off my login screens etc. Is there some sort of clean rom I can write over this thing that just has it unlocked?
I am not using Verizon as a carrier.
What do you think guys. Did I get scammed? I paid 400 USD for this phone. Prompt reply would be appreciated since I think I can still return it if I'm quick about it.
Thank you for your time.

HAHA. I think there was some mis-communication there.
OK: There are 2 types of "unlocked":
1. SIM-Unlocked: Verizon phones ARE "naturally" SIM-Unlocked, and you can use them on any GSM carrier.
2. Bootloader-Unlocked: ALL Verizon phones (aside from the Developer Edition), can NOT have their bootloader's unlocked. Verizon forbids motoorola from allowing you to unlock your bootloader. "Towel Pie Root" doesn't even come close to the functionality of an unlocked bootloader -- there's simply no comparison. There is absolutely NO WAY to unlock your bootloader, except for one possibility.
See this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/general/china-middleman-t2751177
It will cost you money -- but if he doesn't have your code you get refunded. If you DO get a code, your bootloader will be permanently unlocked, and for all essence, it will be an unofficial "Developer Edition".
And finally -- in my opinion, $400 is QUITE excessive for what is really just a standard run-of-the-mill Verizion Moto X, with nothing special about it at all. The average selling price is currently $220 on swappa.com
If it were ME, I'd return it and find a bootloader-unlocked VZW Moto X, or the Verizon DEVELOPER edition Moto X.
Just be careful!!! Many Moto X's on swappa say that they are "unlocked", but this refers to SIM-UNLOCKED. Make sure it -explicitly- says "BOOTLOADER UNLOCKED".
Good Luck!!!
EDIT: Now that I see that you are NOT using verizon as your carrier, I would suggest that you buy an XT1053 instead.
The XT1053 has NO carrier branding, and it can be bootloader-unlocked FREE, direct from Motorola's website.
The price is slightly more than the VZW version - XT1053's are currently averaging $260 on swappa. They are ALL Sim-Unlocked, and bootloader-unlockable.
That's FAR less than the $400 you paid......
the sale is still going on on Motorola's website $324.99 brand new Dev Edition unlocked bootloader

A lot of my issue here is that I'm under some time pressure. My old phone broke and I really just need something to replace it now. So i got what i could get in a short amount of time.
That said, I'm only willing to put up with so much crap. I don't mind over paying a bit. I do mind not getting what I want.
Now, I do believe this is the developer edition. It gives me access to developer tools in the settings and the phone info information seemed to be what developer editions say. Is there a way I can confirm this?
And if it is a Verizon developer edition Moto X, can I properly root it and clean all this verizon garbage off my phone? It seemed like you suggested that if this were a Verizon developer edition Moto X I could still root it?
Please let me know. I'll eat the price hike as a convenience charge but I really can't put up with having it permanently crippled by Verizon.

Enabling "Developer Options" can be done on any phone. Once again, this also has absolutely nothing to do with rooting or unlocking the bootloader. If it WERE the dev edition, the previous owner would have no reason, whatsoever to install TowelPieRoot. That's just silly to use an "exploit" on a phone with an unlocked bootloader.
TowelPieRoot DOES allow you to root the phone - but that will disappear when you update to 4.4.4 -- the new update patches the exploit used by TPR. After this, it will be permanently un-rootable unless you can unlock the BL.
You are completely out-of-luck, sir. Unless you want to roll the dice and spend another $45 in hopes that the "chinaman" might have an unlock code for you. I gave you the link in my first reply to you.
Unless the phone has a Black front, with a woven white back, it is NOT the unlockable developer edition. Sorry. Anything else is just a regular Moto X.

I don't think you are understanding.....
There is no such thing as "rooting the bootloader".
Your bootloader is either unlocked, or it isn't.
There are some "Exploits" that the exploited vulnerabilities in android and allowed you to "root" or "disable write protection", but none of them are permanent solutions. Since they are "Exploits", they can be patched by future updates. They don't "root the bootloader" - they "root the android OS".
ALL exploits, including the one you have linked above HAVE BEEN PATCHED. The only working exploit is TowelPieRoot -- but it does NOT disable write protection. It isn't very useful, and it is not permanent. As I previously told you, once you update to 4.4.4 your phone will be PERMANENTLY un-rootable. Period.
The only way to gain "permanent root and write-protection disable" is to unlock the bootloader. You can NOT unlock the bootloader on a VZW device. Period. Not unless it is a Dev Edition, OR you are able to obtain a bootloader unlock-code from the china middleman that I linked you to before.
There are NO EXCEPTIONS. As I already told you, you are 100% out-of-luck, UNLESS your phone has a black front and woven white back, OR you are able to unlock through the middleman at a cost of $45. There is NO OTHER WAY. None.
Please trust me - I know what I'm talking about 100%. I've only given you the facts. Now you must choose what to do with these facts.

A couple of questions I haven't seen asked...
On the phone go to App Drawer -> Settings -> About phone... What is listed as the SYSTEM VERSION.
Next, what does the BACK of the phone look like or say? Does it have the Verizon logo on it? Does it have the words Developer Edition on the back? Does it have SMALL HARD TO READ Fine print at the bottom that says a model number? Or did it come with the original box that has the IMEI and Model on it? (the model would be XT1060, XT1053, XT1058, etc)
What carrier are you intending to use it with?
Power off the phone, then press the power and volume down buttons simultaneously NOTE: you may need to have the USB cable disconnected first. This will bring you into the AP Fastboot Flash Mode screen (aka bootloader or fastboot mode). It will say DEVICE IS... unlocked or locked. Which is it?
I am asking these questions to know 1. What model X you have, 2. if it is bootloader unlocked, and 3 what rom version is on there.
That will help us guide you further.
@samwathegreat already did a great job explaining Boot Loader Unlock vs SIM Unlock. I've got a long and deeper explaination on bootloader unlocking and effects on rooting at -> http://mark.cdmaforums.com/MotoX-Locked.html It does need to be updated to cover rooting on 4.4.4 with a LOCKED bootloader is not possible.
In short, if your answers to my questions reveal you have a Verizon X that is not a developer edition phone, then the only way to unlock the bootloader is if you can buy a code from the China Middle Man. Unlocking the bootloader is essential these days if you want a full and working ROOT solution.
If you have a Verizon X that you are trying to use on T-Mobile, or ATT, then you might be OK as long as you don't need/want to root it, and are fine with running the stock Verizon ROM. You just might have some limits too (like not be being able to do Voice and LTE data at the same time)
Oh, but to get rid of some of the Verizon bloat, you will need to root it and delete the APK's which would impact future OTAs, or use something like Titanium Backup to freeze them. Both options need you to be rooted.

OK... just saw this.. so never mind what I just posted. Good luck.
If you really want an X, Let us know what carrier, and I would still recommend a Dev Edition, either the GSM or the VZW version depending on your carrier, especially while they stay on sale for $325.99. Any non-contract phone you can get is going to be near that cost, or above.

[Q] Thinking of buying the 2013 Moto X

Hi,
I currently own a Nexus S, customized with AOSP Kitkat ROM. While this is a wonderful device, I think the time has come to change it. 512MB of RAM is just way too low for KitKat and newer apps that are RAM hungry. However, I don't like big phones. I like my Nexus S because it is small and fits everywhere. My brother has a Nexus 5 and it just doesn't fit in my hand. The screen is beautiful, but it is too big for my hand.
I was passing by a carrier store last week and came accross the Moto X and Moto G, both last generation. Both are the same physical size, even though the screen on the Moto G is 4.5inches and the X is 4.7. They fit pretty well in my hands and I love their design. It is also a great thing that it is running nearly stock Android with Motorola applications.
I know the Moto X isn't the most powerful phone on the market, and this isn't what I'm looking for. I'm looking for a nice upgrade with features that I like and a device that feels good in my hands.
Is the device worth it ? Are the Motorola extra features (Moto Assist, Active Display, Touchless controls) working fine ? I can easily imagine my Moto X docked in my car and me asking it for directions or change songs. I can't do that with the Nexus S; it is way too weak in power.
Do you know if I have to keep the stock launcher to get those features ? I really enjoy Apex.
How's the battery life ? I am usually not power hungry as I don't play games on my phone or even watch videos. I listen to music, check rss feeds and social networks.
Lastely, what would you change to the (old) Moto X ? From the reviews that I have read, I understand that the screen isn't incredible, but would you say that it is an issue ?
Thanks for any input
Neo.
Honestly, you would be better served reading through general and Q&A sections and reading the threads that have topic titles you're curious about.
You will get much more info than you will from this thread
Just my opinion. ?
The screen is pretty good as far as I can tell. Better in direct sunlight compared to LCD screens which I had cup my hand to be able to read clearly. That said, the moto features work but I don't make use of them. And you can use any alternative launcher if you like; I use action launcher btw. Is it worth the money? That's up to you. I paid $324 for the 32GB version and it is worth what I paid for it.
What carrier? If vzw?
Get a Maxx if you can cheap enough. Much brighter display
Was in the same situation as u 2 months ago, coming from a droid 3. Was looking at moto x and maxx, but battery was a huge plus for me, and went with the maxx, and I couldn't be happier with my choice. Although, it is a 5 inch screen.

Thanks. It did answer if a third party launcher can be installed and keep Motorola features. The answer is yes

I am in Canada, so the device costs more. In fact, I can't really buy the device anymore in Canada and would have to import it from the US. More of a hassle, but may be worth it. I could get the 16GB XT1058 for about 300$USD shipped.

I am currently with Koodo (Telus) in Canada, but I would buy an unlocked device or unlock it myself. Rogers and Fido had the Moto X as an exclusive here in Canada. You couldn't buy the Moto X anywhere else than these carriers store. So if I wanna get a Moto X on Koodo, I must unlock it anyway. As for the Droid Maxx, I've read many times that the radio isn't working properly in Canada. I would have to dig a bit.
On another note, I was looking at how to root the Moto X and it is much more complicated than my Nexus S. If I can get a Dev edition it would be easier but they are hard to find (and not cheap). Gotta love Nexus devices for that reason !
You can buy an X from carriers still. Mine was 18 bucks to sim unlock. (Rogers phone and I'm on Telus)
And there's many used on kijiji.

You can also unlock the Rogers version and root easily.

Really ? I've done some stores and no fido or rogers had stock on Moto X, although they had it in display.
So you have the XT1058 ? According to the Moto X guides thread, how complex rootinng is, depends on what version of Android is installed. Do you run KitKat or JellyBean ?
The best buy in the last couple of years. I definitly recommend it. I always was the type of person, who felt like having to fiddle a lot with the phone, to fulfill my needs. (I came from LG devices). I always rooted and installed custom ROMs. But believe it or not, I still dont feel the need to root or install a different Software, since the stock ROM runs amazingly great on my phone. I also had the G in my hands, but the X display is way better. Camera... Well it is not the best, but also not as bad as many said. Battery is amazin. And although I already had phones with more capacity, this one lasts longer by far. I also listen to a LOT of music and the phone still gets me through the day quite easily. But there is one thing I would consider. The new 2014 X. For me personally, the screen is too big, but maybe it will be just right for you? And yeah it does not have killer specs, but the phone is definitly smoother than other flagship phones, which often laag due to the extra ("great"/"special") custom UI.
Those are my 2 cents. Hope it helps a bit

I think it would be quite an upgrade for you and still worth it..

Yup, xt1058. Unlocked on moto site, then just used fastboot for custom recovery and rooted. Done. No different than rooting a Nexus. Simple.
I did all that in jelly bean, but it's no different on KitKat.
I don't remember the site I used to unlock Sim, but they're a dime a dozen. I think it was cellularunlocker. Or something like that.
I did have to try the moto site the night I got it, and the next day after work before it worked. The unlock site is glitchy.

OK thanks, I'll check the Moto website. If a get a XT1058 from the US or from Rogers/Fido, I guess I can root it using Moto website and it will work on Koodo. Rooting shouldn't affect the bands and carrier. From what I know, AT&T and Telus/Koodo uses the same bands.
The Complete Moto X Guides/Information Thread got all me confused with downgrading from KitKat to Jelly Bean and flashing the 4.2.2 camera app. Is the downgrade procedure only for Locked Bootloaders (which the XT1058 isn't) ?
Thanks everyone for your feedback yet. I think it will be a device as good as my Nexus S, if not better
$324 seems really high to be the current value.
If the 2014 Moto G is selling for $179 Brand New, what do you think a used 2013 Sprint Moto X is worth now ????

Downloading was going from 4.4 to 4.2.2. That's gone as of 4.4 2. No more downgrading. Not without great risk.
There's no Telus moto x... I don't think. Was only Rogers and fido . Maybe I'm wrong. I got a Rogers one new, but off a guy. I just unlocked it to use on Telus. Maybe there's a telus model... But I didn't think so.
But remember, whatever model number it may be, an AT&T phone can't be unlocked. Avoid getting that if you can.

I am looking at new phones, so this is why it is a bit more expensive. I don't know if you are in the US or CA, but the Moto G will sell for about 225$CDN here and the new Moto X will for around 450-500$ if not more. Cellphones in Canada are more expensive than in the US. Pretty much like anything else on the market...

No there was never any Moto X on Telus or Koodo. It was a Rogers/Fido exclusive. Sorry, I think my post was misleading.
An AT&T phone cannot be unlocked ? I think since a month or 2, this isn't true anymore.

I thought you were talking bootloader unlocked, which AT&T can't. Yes, Sim unlock sure.
But you risk not having root. Depending what version it comes with and whether you're willing to pay 45 to bootloader unlocked, if you're on the list for the China Middleman.

Thanks for pointing that out. I didn't notice that AT&T has a locked bootloader. I thought either locked or unlocked bootloader was model dependant (XT1058,60,etc) and not carrier dependant. Let the search continue. My best bet would be to find a Rogers one
