I have been following this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2322820 - by shadowboy23 -to change phone MID and I got stuck on the grey screen. All the steps have been successful and I still couldn't get past the grey screen. The computer can't recognize the phone and the fastboot adb commands won't work -waiting for device. I have tried to reboot the phone and I'm still stuck on that grey screen. RUU gives me error 170!!!! What can I do?
edit: moved to other thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2542529

If I understand, you flashed eng hboot, it rebooted to grey screen, you did change mid with "fasboot oem writemid" then cid with "fastboot oem writecid". After, you lunched that ruu.exe and it said. Error 170 and right after usb/fastboot aren't working?
Error 170 is a usb connection failure. Do you have latest drivers with htc sync unistalled? Maybe you want to try witj another usb port/cable.
As long that you can boot your phone to that grey screen you SHOULD be able to send fastboot commands

From the guide you linked, gray screen is normal:
Step 6:
When you start your command prompt follow the steps in the picture below. PLEASE BE PATIENT!! After flashing the ENG HBOOT your HTC One will not boot up but you'll just get a gray spotted screen. Your device is not bricked. You can still use adb commands to write the model ID and CID even with a gray screen. WHEN REBOOTING HOLD DOWN POWER BUTTON FOR A FEW SECONDS. You might have to press and hold power button and volume down button when rebooting your phone

But I tried "HOLD DOWN POWER BUTTON FOR A FEW SECONDS" and nothing happend - just gray screen.
I flashed zip and progress bar stopped at ~80% (on rebootRUU) so I reset it and saw gray screen - I tried do this few times and phone just restarted dand stopped at gray screen.
Mayba I should wait longer ?
Yea the eng hboot took a while to even show up on my phone. It says the adb commands will still work, did you change the numbers already? It won't boot up right if you don't flash an hboot intended for our phones after you're done

Have you read the thread in the link you posted? It says it gets stuck at 80%, reboot and your phone will have a grey screen, proceed to next step, which is writing the MID.
You've stated that you did the first two but now it's at a grey screen ... Do the next step like it tells you. I don't get why you keep rebooting it and questioning the grey screen when it tells you that is normal and tells you what to do next?

-- And I did next 3 times and now its OK.
Thanks for help
I'm also able to type in fastboot command but now adb, what can I do??? Did I just brick the most amazing phone???
I'm stuck on the same gray screen and I can't do anything. It's not accepting fastboot commands and says waiting for device and RUU is not recognizing the device

I don't get why ppl are still using this method to change the MID despite all the warnings posted in the old thread where you can find the instructions how to flash the eng hboot. There are now really faster, easier and safer methods to change the MID.
So I guess you have flashed the eng hboot using a windows 8 or 10 computer right and now you don't have fastboot connectivity anymore? The eng hboot is version 1.43 and windows 8 and 10 are only supported since version 1.54. If this is the case, you'll have to find a Windows 7 computer to finish the process. Note that you'll need to use a 1.xx.xxx.x RUU.exe. Using newer RUU with this method will not work.
Lately my phone has been rebooting itself quite a bit. It seems to be getting progressively worse to the point where if I open any app for more than a minute or two then my phone will reboot. I've tried uninstalling quite a few third party apps but that didn't do the trick. Whenever I try to do a hard reset (whether it's through settings or the HBOOT menu) the phone will shut down and then instead of getting the picture of a phone with the green thing in the middle and a status bar below that indicating the phone is resetting, I get a picture of a phone with a red symbol similar to a hazard sign that will last for about 30 seconds then the phone just boots back up to my home screen. I had put an incorrect custom ROM on this phone about 5-6 months ago but I was able to get the stock Sprint ROM back on the phone and relock the boot loader and the phone functioned fine ever since up until about a week ago when it started rebooting randomly. I have a feeling this may be part of the reason why the factory reset is not working. Does anyone have any ideas on how to proceed? Can I do a factory reset by pushing a ROM to the phone through my computer?
If u are s-off then I suggest u download the ruu and run it. If s-off all u have to do is go to hboot and select fast boot and run the program it will reset the phone back to whatever software version it is for the ruu. If your not s-off you will need to get the ruu that matches your firmware. That should fix your troubles if not then you have something faulty with the hardware itself

Ok I am S-ON and here is what I am trying to do. I downloaded the RUU that matches my phone current software from the link below and placed the file in the platform-tools folder after renaming it. When I run the fastboot oem rebootRUU command in the cmd prompt, my phone just reboots rather than booting to the black screen with the silver HTC logo. Any suggestions on how to proceed?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2687690
Also, my bootloader shows that it is relocked

Ok I tried that RUU yesterday and couldn't seem to get anywhere because I kept getting error 170 (tried updating drivers, installing HTC sync, etc). Tried again today and got error 170 again, so then I went in my bootloader, then fastboot, connected USB cable, fastboot usb. I then ran the RUU and it said it was going to update my phone. The status bar then said "Waiting for bootloader" and my phone just rebooted itself to the home screen and then I got like error 171 or something (another USB error). I'm kind of running out of ideas at this point. I believe something is wrong with my recovery or I have some sort of bug because I attempted to flash a custom recovery today (TWRP) but when I unlocked my bootloader, I restarted the phone and entered my bootloader again but it still said relocked (even though the prompt on my phone came up giving me the warnings asking if I was sure I wanted to unlock the bootloader) so when I run the command fastboot flash recovery twrp.img I get something along the lines of can't read twrp.img or can't open twrp.img (yes I made sure the file is in the same folder that I am running the adb out of). Willing to try any recommendations at this point because my phone is pretty useless as of right now because it restarts every couple minutes. HTC wants $150 to fix it which I told them I'm not willing to pay, rather buy a new phone.
wrong update utility
attempted ruu update from htc site, used update for m7 ,
but program came up with "error 152 image update error.
please get the correct update utility and try again."

you're stuck in "incomplete RUU mode flash"; please post a "fastboot getvar all" (excluding IMEI and s/n), do not relock bootloader, and do not even think about S-ON
you need to complete a proper RUU mode flash (doesnt necessarily need to be a full ruu, but we'll get to that when you post the getvar)
how to get getvar
I do not have access to anything that was in the boot loader how do I get getvat without that?

go to bootloader screen (i believe it also works in RUU mode - the silver HTC logo screen), and "fastboot getvar all" and post it (excluding IMEI and s/n), ... or at least a screenshot of bootloader
no acction possible on bootloader screen
@nkk71
I do not have access the bootloader screen unless I pull that USB cable part way out and wiggle it around. I did take a screenshot of it with my other cell phone but I don't know how to upload it on to this post. as far as everything that on the bootloader screen there is no possible action that could be taken everything that gives you an option is gone. there's nothing to scroll up or down to.this area is blank.
Hi,
Today my htc one got stuck in a boot loop. now it just freezes on the white startup screen. So i figured I try to factory reset. But when I enter Hboot and select factory reset the phone just freezes up.
I then tried recovery and fastboot options but the same thing happens: the phone just freezes up.
I have not rooted my phone. It is stock ROM and the bootloader is still locked. I also dont know if usb debugging is on, I dont thiks it is.
Also my computer does not recognize my phone. I installed HTC sync for the drivers (I have windows 8 if that matters)
I also installed "Minimal ADB and Fastboot" in order to try to unluck the bootloader but since I cant access fastboot and because my computer doesn't recognize the phone I am not able to do this.
Please help me... I really don't want to buy another phone just yet.
What is my next step?
I'm here ask help exactly for the same problem.
But differently mine can be detected by the computer. The problem caused by flashed a RUU not completely. The bootloader is relocked by myself. Others is just the same as your discription.
Is there anyone could help us?

Think your only choice is to reflash ruu again. However best that you post output of "fastboot getvar all" so that others can help. Need to be sure of firmware and os versions to get the right ruu.

You need to get the computer connecting to do anything. Suggest you uninstall htcsync but leave the drivers installed. Try a different usb port and cable.
Need to be able to post outbut of "fastboot getvar all" to get help.

My HTC One M7 is Hongkong CHT edition.
This is the PIC took before flashed RUU.
http :fs1.d-h.st/view/iCnH/00197/1.png
I've tried the "Unbrick project BETA" from the forum and flashed bcb recovery to my device, but neither worked.
Finally I decided to flash an official RUU to my M7.
First I relocked it. Then I flashed the RUU "PN07IMG_M7_UL_L50_SENSE60_MR_hTC_Asia_HK_7.18.708.2_Radio_4T.35.3218.29_10.33R.1718.01L_release_420559_signed.zip" from the RUU collection thread.
But in the process of flashing RUU I suddenly kicked off the power of my desktop PC !!!
Now it has became like this.:crying:
h ttp :fs1.d-h.st/view/vQn3/00197/2.png
It is totally bricked! It will only boot into fastboot and cannot do any further action except "power down". Other will just make the phone hang. Fastboot mode can be detect by computer. The htc_fastboot command "oem rebootRUU" "reboot" "reboot-bootloader" and "getvar all" will also make the phone hang. Now I can't even make the phone get into RUU mode! However I can boot into hboot with volume- and power button.

Hi Guys/Girls,
So today a friend gave me a HTC m7 to try and fix........From what i can gather something went wrong when they tried to encrypt the phone. Now when turn it on it asks for a password, when you get it wrong it wants to reset the phone, but this achieves nothing and you end up back at the encryption page. Neither Recovery Or Factory Reset work it comes up with: E:failed to mount /data. Also says some stuff before that about E:missing bitmap oem_unlock_bg, which im guessing is why i cant unlock the bootloader? i can get fastboot to work but as soon as i ask for the token it just sits and does nothing. adb does not seem to work.
As a side note i have 2 other htc m7's with broken screens, so if this is something that needs a hardware change that may be possible id assume?. I'm just unsure where to go from here, if i cant unlock the bootloader then what can you do???
I've rooted a few phones but your talking to abit of a beginner here guys.
Anyway TIA!

Sorry if this seems nooby, but can you use a RUU with a locked boot loader and s-on? i cant even get the phone to respond to "fastboot oem get_identifier_token". I've been all over htc1guru but its abit beyond me, does fastboot flash work on a locked bootloader?
This seems to be a pretty bad catch 22, i cant fix the issue, because the issue stops me from doing anything. Any alternate ways around this guys???

When S-ON, a ruu must be flashed with a locked bootloader, thats the only way Only S-OFF phones can flash a ruu with an unlocked bootloader.

Can your phone at least reboot in RUU mode (Black screen with silver HTC logo)?
Code:
fastboot oem rebootRUU
Can you post the outputs of
Code:
fastboot oem last_dmesg
and
Code:

None of those commands work all i get is "< waiting for devices >". It is connecting to my pc i hear the noise of a device connecting plus "fastboot version" comes up with "htc_fastboot version 2.0.1", seems to be any oem commands wont work???
Also i was just playing around with the encryption page and can get access to the phones settings so i turned on usb debugging, some of the stuff in settings does not seem to work correctly and it crashes occasional but i thought this info might be useful....?
