[Q] Sky Go Tablet & Cyanogenmod - Nook HD, HD+ Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
Firstly ought to say thanks to verygreen et al. for the awesome cyanogen mod, have 10.1.3 up and running on a nook hd+ mand it's great.
I'm trying to get: h-t-t-p-s://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.bskyb.skygotablet&hl=en_GB to work on the nook hd+ with cyanogenmod, they have some pretty extreme protection measures against rooted devices. I've read just about the whole 292 pages of the thread on Sky Go (The mobile version) to work out how I might go about getting it to work.
I've tried manually moving su, and OTA rootkeeper, and changing ro.tags to "release-keys" in build.prop, I'm just taking a backup now to try changing ro.secure to 1 in default.prop in initrd.gz. (I couldn't figure out another way to get hold of the boot image, am I missing something obvious?).
Basically wanted to know if I'm fighting a losing battle here - or if there some way to actually unroot cyanogenmod that I'm not aware of. Don't really want to have to go back to stock to get this working, but the tablet is for the Mrs and I think she'd really like Sky Go.....
I know in the previous version people had some success running with a stock kernel - does anyone know if it's possible to replace the Cyanogenmod kernel with the stock nook one?
Cheers

[Q] Really new newbie with basic questions

I'm new to Android and tablets and have never had a smart phone. However, I am in the computer field and am relatively technical. At the very least, I'm intelligent and can follow clear directions.
Where I'm running into trouble is that, because this is all so new to me, I'm lost when reading a lot of these forums, because I have no idea what all these terms mean or what things are.
Here's where I'm at with my Nook Color. Got it a week ago, rooted it with AutoNooter 3.0, got ADB working (finally) over USB. YouTube works. Can get my email. Using Launcher Pro and Dolphin HD. That's about it.
I'm unclear about a few things, and I realize they're pretty basic. But I've searched and searched and can't find clear answers. Hopefully, someone here can help me:
1. How do I know what version of Android I've got on this thing. Nowhere can I find a place to see the version number. And the AutoNooter 3.0 page didn't tell me what version it installs. 2.2?
2. Does Flash work on this or not? This is related to question 1, because I need to at least know what Android version I'm using before I can even beging to search to figure out whether Flash works with it.
3. What is CM7?
4. I tried installing Flash101.apk with ADB, but get the message: INSTALL_FAILED_OLDER_SDK. Again, I'd like to know what this means, but what I've read says the Flash version is for an newer Android version. So, we're back to... what version of Android is on this thing?
As fas as the rest, does anyone know if there's anything out there that goes over basic terms for those of us completely new to Android and tablets/phones and rooting them? Much of the instructions I read refer to things I've never heard of and, when I try looking up those terms, I just get more terms I've never heard of.
Thanks!
1) You have 2.1 (Eclair)
2) No, you need 2.2. There are several options, including simply running it from an SD card or flashing it to memory (eMMC)
3) CM7 is andrioid 2.3. Good stuff, but still a work in progress.
4) See #2
Thanks very much for responding.
Regarding your answers:
1. Is there a place on the Nook where I can find this?
2. Can you recommend a link to a method for getting this? Is it an upgrade, or would I be completely re-rooting this thing and having to reconfigure everything?
Any suggestions on some basic information for newbies?
Thanks again!
Sorry, I don't think I understand the question. Could you specify what you mean by "this"? Thanks.
Sorry, not sure which question you're referring to.
1. This = The version currently running on it.
2. This = Version 2.2
I can't be certian since I have moved to a CM7 variant, but I think it might be under settings either about or device information.
If you rooted with Autonooter you are on Android 2.1 Eclair. If you are running a froyo rom you are on Android 2.2. If on a CM7 based Rom you are on gingerbread android 2.3

CM7 (Cyanogenmod 7) is a custom rom, which is a custom operating system that replaces your current one. If you are not familiar with Android yet or rooting, I would stick with autnooter for now. Phiremod beta 2 is a stable custom rom with flash, but you need clockwork recovery first to install it.
Yeah, checked those places Wile E, but didn't see it there. Thanks, though.
stelv, would that run off the card or internally? If it runs off the card, I could try it out without messing up what I've already got, right?

Most custom rom installs (phiremod) would erase what you have now completely. You would have to redownload programs and use the nook color app from market for books. You could use titanium backup to backup and restore apps. There is a thread here and on androidtablets.net for phiremod beta 2.
But there may be a version of froyo that runs off sdcard but I am not sure how stable that is. If you are running froyo from an sdcard and mess with the nook internally, it may mess your nook up when you remove the card and try to go back to your old setup.
The good thing with the beta 2 version of phiremod is that you can restore a previous version of the nook from the clockwork recovery menu if you have cwr installed. That is if you make a backup first through cwr on your autonooter version of nook.
If you decide to go the route of a custom rom I would check out the how to on androidtablets.net about clockworkmod recovery first.

Thanks for all the info. When you say "custom roms," are you referring to any rooting of your Nook Color? Is the version of Android I have after running the AutoNooter 3.0 considered a custom rom? Or did I just merely strip off some of the "skin" Barnes & Noble has on there, 'cause it didn't seem very much like I'd started over, but more like I "got past" something that was already on there and, therefore, opened up more functionality. Does that make any sense? I'm getting the feeling that Nookie Froyo and CM7 completely wipe your Nook and give you a fresh OS. Yes?

Ok here is another long book by me, sorry for the long posts
Yes, Nookie Froyo, CM7, Phiremod give you an entirely new OS.
Custom roms are not any rooting. They are entirely different android operating systems so to speak. Most require one to wipe the devices internal Rom (Read Only Memory) in order to put a new one on. This is sort of risky as it erases everything, but is made less risky by using stable custom roms in combo with clockwork recovery. If the internal memory gets messed up and the procedures for instaling a custom rom are not followed or an error happens, your device will be unusable until fixed (fixed usually by booting CWR off sdcard and installing a stock image). Please do research and ask around XDA or androidtablets before installing a custom rom to know what the ups and downs of it are.
Also please keep in mind on the Nook certain Roms like CM7 require a different version of CWR and require a workaround to work as of now. It can be kind of tricky to install. Phiremod Beta2 can be installed through normal recovery. Check us out over at http://www.androidtablets.net/forum/nook/ if you want. There are a lot of useful guides over there.
Yes autonooter just opens up functionality
Autonooter is not a custom Rom. It is just the method of rooting or unlocking your android device. Rooting an Android device makes you system administrator of the device. This is so you can do things beyond what B&N lets you do with the device like use the Android market.
This is what I did with my Nook. Autnootered it>installed Clockwork Recovery>Made a backup with Clockwork Recovery>Then Installed Phiremod beta2 through clockwork recovery as per the instructions for that rom
Thanks again for this. I appreciate you taking the time to explain this to a newbie. It's beginning to make much more sense now. For now, I'll stick with what I've got, keep reading and then go from there.
Ugh. Authentication error while reading a book and then a reset, and I'm back to the beginning. Except worse, because even navigation while reading a book doesn't work right. Anyone experience this?
Sorry I don't have that issues so I am not sure. Maybe its a password issue?
Perhaps. Don't know. Starting over from scratch. All I know is that it happened when I was merely reading a book, about ten minutes after trying to login to Google Talk with a different Google account than the one I used during the AutoNooter process.
Who knows...

[Q] Just bought a nook color, couple rooting questions

So I just got a nook color and obviously I want to root it, but heres what I would like to know. Should I upgrade to 1.2 first? I figure if Im going to root, then I dont need the features of 1.2 If I root and install CM7 with CWR and all that good stuff to the eMMc can I put it back to stock nook at any point (like in case I want to return it)? My understanding is that autonooter is to install android to an microSD card and you still have stock nook when not booted from sd, correct?
Im not looking to run HC and Id think Id like to keep the features that the nook has, but is booting off SD really that slow? Can I still over clock if booting off sd? Besides CM7 is there a stable working froyo or GB rom? I run Chevy's SS 5.2 on my D1 which is GB with some tweaks and would like something similar.
I know its a lot, but id appreciate the help, search for all of these is very overwhelming as most of the answers are buried in 100's of replies.
Running from SD can be at least as fast as eMMC and does not require rooting, and you can upgrade stock without worrying. The "Android Odyssey" blog post linked in my sig has links to all the resources you'll need for a fast and painless CM7 set-up.
Maybe you'll still want to root afterward, but I started out intending to just 'try out' CM7 on SD, and couldn't be happier with my system as-is.

[Q] Where'd my Dual Boot go? (Dual-boot CM & Stock)

Hi all!
I just updated my Nook from an old Phiremod build to MIUI 1.8.5, and I love it! However I see (because of the CyanogenMod logo, and the subsequent menu) that the new advanced boot menu was baked into the ROM. Now this seems to be a lot more awesome than the old-fashioned multi-uBoot, and I can boot into Normal and Recovery just fine... however my other ROM on the eMMC won't boot. I've actually done this to two NCs, my mothers and my own. My mother's had Stock 1.1 rooted on the alt partition. Mine had a build of Honeycomb. Both hang whenever I select Boot Alt then Reboot!
Is there any way to recover these old partitions? If not, that's not a big deal. it would just be nice.
More important however:
How can I, using the new Boot Menu, have my Normal boot be CM/MIUI/Whatever, and my ALT boot be (preferably rooted and OC'd) Stock 1.2? Please help, I'm going back to school and would love to have Stock for studying... and as of this point, my mother's under the impression that I broke her Nook Color, so I'm in hot water!
Please!
Thanks!
EDIT: found this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1156909 This MAY be the solution to my problem. Going to try it and see where it leads. Silly me only looking for the solution in the Android Development section, not the General section. Will post back soon, for now, IGNORE ME!
Yeah this totally looks like the solution to my problems. It seems to be using Multi-uBoot 0.4 as opposed to the boot menu, but I'm just going to do what I do best: blindly follow instructions and pray that all will be well. I strongly believe it will be. Should I run into any problems, I'll just rewrite this thread and go from there. Happy Nooking everyone!

[Q] Nook HD screen manufacturer

Hello,
Just purchased 2 Nook HD with the intent of running the 'double boot' CM 10.1, so we could choose on startup. In one of them, it seems to work fine, but the other one never displays the boot screen of CWM. This is a a bit of a problem since one cannot see what to boot. I eventually made a sd card which would only boot 10.1 (i.e. without the dual boot possibility) which eventually will boot cm 10.1. Upon searching the development thread on the dual boot card, I saw that there are different screens on the nooks. I saw a post about checking the options passed to the kernel (msprag13 and some replies as well) Since I could boot both machines I did check and the one where CWM gives us the boot screen is AUO and the one that shows nothing is a LGD. Just curious to know if there is any progress on this? The problem seems to be in CWM and not CM 10.1
I know unix quite well but his android hacking is a bit new to me...
Jonathan
Bokbokan is on vacation so I will answer for him. The last I talked to him, he was not able to fix it. He does not own the LGD device so he can't test it. It is an issue in uImage which is the 2nd bootloader and also is what displays the menu. Maybe someone wants to loan their LGD device to him so he can fix it.
But you can accomplish the booting between the ROMs by installing an app from Play Store. Get Quick Boot by Sirius Applications. With that you can select bootloader and it will boot to stock. And if you are rooted on stock you can install it there and choose reboot to go back to CM.

thanks
Hello,
Thanks for the hint. We'll try that too, but it will probably be in CM10.1 most of the time. We're in Sweden and don't have US credit cards so stock isn't that useful, though we are able to read ADE protected books from the library with the stock ROM.
If you want someone to compile and test things in the LGD device we can probably give it a try. I generally use Linux (gentoo) so I am familiar with compiling things though I'd probaby have to update gcc to handle other architectures. But I'm not afraid of looking at source code (I've had to do that for some programs that gentoo didn't have) , so if I can help let me know.

He has his source for the u-boot.bin posted on his OP. This is what eventually gets built as uImage. If you want you can download it and look at it. The files of interest are in /board/bn_hummingbird.
And you can still have the Hybrid without the menu. It boots Hybrid automatically. And using his power off menu in CM10.1, you can get to recovery.

Flash & Nook Color HD+ 9'

Hello guys,
Forgive me on the newbie questions. I didn't know where to start reading.
It looks like a lot. So, I am hoping for simple and easy to do list to get this to work.
I have websites like NHL.com, MLB.com and NFL.com which I have legal logins to try to
log in to and watch the on my nook but it won't download the app for that sport, or I can't get it to work with the stock browsers that it comes with along with Dolphin or Puffin free and pro. I want to work like it does on my computer and work on my nook.
At the time I didn't realize this device did not have flash embedded in and would not have bought it if I new it then. I am looking to trade it maybe if anyone is interested in swapping out this table for a table that is equal and would have flash working with it. I am open to that.
I have tried all of them They will work but it is extremely bad. Buffers all the time or won't download, and the usual hits keep coming for reasons it doesn't work do to the fact the BN tablet is not friendly with the nook and doesn't work by default. Also doesn't work on WWE.com. Yes, I am a huge sports fan but it is what it is.
What I am wanting to know if i do some rooting and side loading, will this work for me?
Will flash work with out me downloading anything else and installing anything else besides the roms and whatever is needed for cyanogenmod & Roms.
Can anyone help me with the right links and what to do and how to do it?
I have a dedicated SD card I bought for this reason alone. But, again if I download cyanogenmod and other software I need. Will this be the ends meet I need.
Another words will flash work well like it does non a computer if I decided to go this route.
My nook is over a year old so it's probably out of warranty. So, I am know about that issue.
PLEASE HELP ME GET FLASH TO WORK WELL ON THIS DEVICE, PERTTTTY PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!
No help & Possible Trading Device, The Nook with someone?
So,
Know one has any advice on how to help me with my flash & Nook HD+ 2.2.0 software version issue.
I need to figure out how to get flash on to it, through normal procedures.
Or the cyanogenmod and others to get flash on it?
If I choose the cyanogenmod route will this help me get flash on it and work.
For instance I will go to ESPN.com a known flash website.
When I am in non-mobile mode it says flash needs to be downloaded. It takes me to it.
But, the choices are not obviously for the Nook Color HD+, correct?
Can any one give me some advice on how I can get flash to work good?
I am past my warranty so I am aware of that.
I have tried other work around such as puffin free and paid version browsers and Dolphin. They all work, but work like crap. Lagging
big time or not working at all. I have tried The browser plugin which supposedly is suppose to help but doesn't or I am not doing things
correctly which is entirely likely.
I would really appreciate some one who can guide me through the cyanogenmod process. I have a SD card and I am willing to try it.
I don't care which versions I have just as flash works well. That is what i need to happen.
A lot of the sports programs I mentioned earlier do not work on their websites like NHL.com or MLB,com.
I can't even download their apps do to not compatible.
Again I would really appreciate the help. Just need some good old fashion help from some one.
I am also willing to trade the device to some one if they want for a table that will work just as well as this one that does what I need it to do if that is a option to some of you folks?

Hi,
I followed the advice in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1774336&page=94 and it worked for me in Dolphin and I then found it worked in the stock browser :good:

2.2 is what I have
Dave,
2.2 is what I have not 4.1 like the article says.

To use install and run Flash, you'd need to install and run custom ROM such as CM11, or to root your current stock ROM (your stock ROM v2.2 is based on Android version 4.0, so Flash should install and run on it once it's rooted).
Flash for Android 4.0 can be downloaded from http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/archived-flash-player-versions.html.

See http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2679899 for info/pointers on how to install CM11 on Nook HD+.
If you'd like to try out CM11 running it on SD first before committing to installing it on emmc (replacing the current stock ROM), see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2583952.
What to download? Part #2
Hey guys,
Just to make sure I downloaded two versions of flash files just to be safe.
http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/archived-flash-player-versions.html
From that link above.
I downloaded the one for 4.0 and 2.x I think it says on their download links.
Was that the correct flash to download?
Still need advice on what to do with my android software, will I need to update that first then download the CM 11 software.
Just not sure what process to take. sorry it's confusing to me at the moment.
I will stop babbling on. Sorry.
Excited to here your suggestions on help.
Thanks again peeps, Karl
