[Q] No Contract Moto X - Will it work in India? - Moto X Q&A

Hi everyone,
I’m planning to buy a Motorola Moto X phone from US through the official Moto Maker site.
At checkout, I would still need to choose a carrier. I'm planning to choose one of the GSM providers (AT&T or T-Mobile) with the ‘No contract’ option.
As far as I know, the phone would still be locked to the carrier chosen. So, does that mean that the phone will be unusable outside of the US?
I spoke to a couple of Motorola agents and I got contrasting views-
One of them said, the phone would be locked to the opted carrier in the US. But elsewhere the phone could be used with any GSM sim.
The other agent said, the phone will not be usable with any SIM apart from the opted carrier, till the phone is unlocked using an unlock subsidy code obtained from the carrier.
So, what is this about Locked and No Contract phones? Also I read in the AT&T's and T-Mo's site that they would provide a unlock code after 60 and 40 days respectively.
And, any processes to be followed before taking it out of US to use with a local carrier in other countries? Like Activation etc.,
Any suggestions or thoughts would be of great help. Thanks!

ok... so this is the deal with an AT&T Motox X off contract. It will still be carrier locked out of the box. I talked to AT&T and they said that in order to unlock it there has to be a least 60 days of AT&T service on the phone.... i think its ridiculous...!!
was planning to buy it and bring it to Germany... but wont work out of the box...

I think TMobile version is carrier unlocked.

Hmm.. Seems so! I too feel it is ridiculous. What if someone from US buys it and ends up going abroad for a vacation more than 40 days. How do they keep the service active?

The T-Mobile version is carrier unlocked. I may be getting the Moto X from the US but primarily will use it in India for the immediate future.

Thanks for the info.
Is any activation required with the T-Mo sim before it can be used elsewhere? Or can the phone be directly used out of the box?

No activation, straight up unlocked.
EDIT: In the event that I'm wrong, it's easy enough to unlock via a code for not much cash.

Hi, thanks for your reply.
Do you know if I take an unlocked Moto X bought from the US (via the Motorola Maker Website) to India, will I be able to get service in India, or do I need to bring it back to the US if I have any issues?
I'm worried about such things as broken screen, repairs, battery replacement, etc...
Any help you or anyone could give regarding this would be greatly appreciated.

Moto X help needed
Hey guys.. I'm planning to get a Moto X, but in India we dont have the option for the 32 Gb variant and neither do we get the Moto Maker... Does anyone have any info regarding whther these features would be available in the future, and that i could wait for it? Or is it better to get it shipped from the US via a friend/cousin??

Hello everyone,
As you all know there was a sale just for one day on Moto X over in US, I ordered the 32gb version for myself. As I am in India and will be using this phone here, on the choose a carrier page i selected: GSM Unlocked (includes T-Mobile Sim) option.
My question is: Will this phone support the Indian Sim? Also does this phone support LTE? And which version (AT&T or T-Mobile) will I get as below GSM Unlocked, it`s written AT&T and T-Mobile 4G LTE with Global HSPA?
Which one is better in terms of future software updates?

[Q][Urgent] Unlock Sprint Moto X? Buy unlocked from MotoMaker

Hello,
I want to get a Moto X for Europe.
1. as a non-Sprint customer, can I unlock the phone for Europe usage?
2. if No, can I get a carrier-unlocked phone from moto maker?
3. if yes, can someone help me out with a code?
Notes:
It's urgent because I have to ship it in the next days to arrive in time.
I have a US address and CC.
Thanks a bunch!
I don't think you want a Sprint phone at all. What bands do your providers use for HSPA/UMTS/WCDMA and for LTE?
With that information we can suggest the best Moto X variant to purchase.
If your CC isn't issued in the US. You won't be able to purchase. Buying the model depends on which bands your carrier support for LTE if that is a concern for you. The T Mobile Moto X from their website comes carrier unlocked with no branding. And it's LTE bands are 2,4 & 17. AT&T model supports the most LTE bands. I don't recall all of them Wikipedia should help with that.
I'm assuming you're are buying from MotoMaker to get a customized one?
You can take the route of buying from eBay if the above is not the case, where sellers sell the unlocked AT&T variant which is the Mobile Nextel version? (I think), but no option to customize colors.
By the way why did you want the Sprint version?

I did take the ebay route, and after so much digging about several models, I just decided to get the Moto X, and found a good price for it. I also checked that it can be carrier unlocked, but didn't know it's not for all carriers. So I didn't check if you can unlock Sprint or not.
Sad thing is, I already won the bid for the phone. And now I don't know what to do, because if I pay for it, I will have an unusable phone in my country .
I'd order from the MotoMaker (friend of mine has US CC), but the price is a bit high for me there. That's why I asked if someone maybe has a $150 off code, I saw people offering.
What do you suggest?

Here are the bands, if the image is not showing for you: https://www.dropbox.com/s/41dapiaxppa5w72/Capture.PNG
If you have a friend in the US that would be the best route.
Mines were unable to buy mines for me because the thought it would of been to much of a hassle.
I live in The Bahamas and had to buy mines through a US parcel forwarding Personal shopper service. Which in turn still turned out better than buying from eBay or Swappa. Reason being is that I got to customize it to my liking of colors and I got more memory for the money.
As for a code, surely someone around here has one they will give you for free. Or you can go to AndroidCentral to try your luck there, but for the most part users of XDA have some at their disposal.

Your best bet is to purchase a tmobile version of the phone, it will not be simlocked. The Sprint versions are simlocked and I only Sprint seems to be able to unlock them.
I don't think any version of the phone will get you LTE, you may get HSPA (3G) but it is tough to confirm without having any true band numbers to compare to as several bands are similar in the US and other countries but aren't quite the same.
If you do have a US friend who can and will order a phone with a US credit card I do have a code to share. I just want to make sure the code gets used.

I bought the TMO version. I don't think you can unlock Sprint for GSM.
EDIT: Afaik, you need to been on Sprint fo 90 days to get it unlocked. Maybe you can talk to them, and ask the exact conditions. I couldn't do this, because I don't live in the US. My best option was to get the TMO version, even if it's more expensive. This is unlocked by default, and works in Europe. It's like the developer edition.

[Q] MOTO X buying from US

Hi
Iam about o buy a MOTO X with GSM Unlocked provided by NET10 Carrier in US. will this mobile work with my vodafone carrier in INDIA.
Expected answers in a day
thanks in Advance
From what I've been reading, the X from net10 is the XT1053 GSM Unlocked version,. It is SIM unlocked and should be bootloader unlockable.
If that is true, then similar to the GSM Unlocked XT1053 and Developer Edition XT1053, the Net10 X will support the following frequencies...
GSM/GPRS/EDGE: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz
UMTS/HSPA/HSPA+ : 850/900/ AWS/1900/2100 MHz with HSPA+ up to 42 Mbps (B5/B8/B4/B2/B1)
LTE: 700/AWS/1900MHz (B17/B4/B2)
If your carrier uses those, then the phone will work. If you've seen threads talking about the USA Dev Edition, or GSM Unlocked Edition being used in India, then it will work.
This thread -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/general/moto-x-indian-thread-pricing-t2662264 seems to indicate the XT1052 is being sold/used in India... Based on Wikipedia, the XT1052 supports different LTE bands, and there is a slight difference in the UMTS/HSPA/HSPA+ support.

Not doubting you, but do you have source for this? Everything I've been reading has left the model number out. If it is an XT1053, that would be awesome, but I don't want to buy the phone and find out it has Net10 firmware on it.

Sorry, I thought this AndroidPolice article said the model -> http://www.androidpolice.com/2014/07/09/deal-alert-moto-x-on-net-10-is-299-100-off-until-july-16th/
but apparently it was discussion in the comments... does not appear confirmed.
THe Moto Maker web site calls it GSM Unlocked includes Net10 Wireless SIM... hence the speculation its the same XT1053 GSM Unlocked but includes a Net10 sim rather than T-Mobile.
I may just take a chance on ordering it, and if it isn't an XT1053 i'll just return it for a refund.
Any update on this? Want to get one for tmobile.

Only towel root as far as i know....and don't think it works right without pie.
I might be wrong, never needed any of it. Lol
And you can't downgrade....but you probably know that. ?
I was able to flash twrp via fastboot and then install supersu no problem and now rooted.

So you were able to get the unlock code from the official moto website? If so, that is great news!
Some of us were wondering if net10 would allow moto to give the codes out for phones purchased as 'net10' phones, since most of domestic carriers don't allow it (exception being t-mobile).

Just FYI, you can use scissors to cut any size SIM down to micro or nano (I've done it successfully multiple times). There is a lady at the mall kiosk that does exactly that (doesn't even use one of the SIM-Cutting machines that you can get on Amazon for only a few bucks...) LOL! And she charges $10 to do it!! haha

This is true but not all do lte. It seems to be hit and miss by device.
It seems to depend on the area you're in and the band that your specific carrier uses there.
For example I used to get LTE in a certain area of the city but only H+ when I was at home.
Has anyone used the Verizon version on at&t to confirm if lte works?

Just wondering if your Verizon Moto X (2014) is able to get software updates? Also, what about certain features like Wi-Fi calling? I am thinking about a factory refurbished Verizon Moto X (2014) for $259, but wanted to hear a bit more about your experience. Thanks so much!

Wifi calling was a negative. No idea about software updates. Was fully updated when I got it. I no longer have it, sold it and got a pure edition since I switched to cricket and wanted lte.
I just tried the same model Verizon Moto X 2nd gen on ATT Straight talk and can confirm I get edge, H+ and Lte Bands all working perfect. No need to even mess with apn for MMS. Love this phone.

Based on this thread, I snagged a refurbished Motorola 1096 on ebay. With a T-Mobile SIM card, I get flawless voice, SMS texting, and 4G LTE data. Out of the box, it came with Android 4.4.4 but automatically started downloading lollipop as soon as I turned it on - this was before I put the SIM card in. I did update it fully before inserting the T-Mobile SIM card, and so I don't know if it'll continue to automatically update if it has a non-Verizon SIM card in.

Software updates has nothing to do with the carrier sim card you are using in it. The phone itself will get it respective software update depending on its model number/variant and imei/serial number. For example, I'm using a at&t variant, and I unlocked it by purchasing an unlocked code so that I can use it on my local carrier. I was still able to get the lollipop update.

I can also confirm that this works. I just left a TMo store, and my Verizon 2gen MotoX works perfectly!!! Calling, text, data, GPS...perfect!!
another great reason TMo > VZ
Great to know. It is now $200 on eBay, ordered it just now and hopefully would get it in hand by this weekend.

Hate to necro this thread, but I'm wondering if anybody here is still running T-Mobile on their XT1096 (Verizon). I just went in to the T-Mobile store today and tried out a test SIM card, and while both voice and data seemed to work fine, I had hiccups with SMS. Based on some testing, I was able to send texts but was unable to receive them. We played with some APN settings and rebooted the phone but to no avail.
One unique thing about my setup is that my bootloader is unlocked and I'm running a custom debloated version of the stock ROM (which can be found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x-2014/development/img-xt1096-victara-mofo-image-root-t3100145). Is it possible that this could be causing the issue, should I go back into the store running pure stock and try again?
Anybody got any ideas?

Truth of AT&T Software update - Galaxy S6 Active

Hi All
Last week I visited my company HQ in San jose.
And good news I can get a Galaxy S6 active with ATT GoPhone prepaid service.
When I stayed in USA, CA. I didn't expect Software update. Becuase, its very newly phone. I'm very satisfied Galaxy S6 active's overall performance.
But this is my big mistake.
When I came back to south korea, I noticed revised firmware are available in AT&T OTA(FOTA/Update) server.
See : http://www.att.com/esupport/softwareUpdateArticle.jsp?sid=KB426851&cv=820
So I decided OTA update then push "About phone - Software update "
But every time displayed as "Software interrupted" also reviewed adb logcat log, many error displayed by "CLIENT AUTH Error"
=> It seems FOTA server authenticate through ATT CIngular APN then if authenticate successful, Firmware file download via Wi-FI network.
I don't understand because i activated as AT&T Go Phone prepaid service, why I can't get and update AT&T Official OTA through ATT OTA server.
Thus I request my US colleague and he asked to ATT REP regarding this OTA problem.
Few minute ago my colleague forwarded ATT REP answer "they have no way to add an imei to update servers unless that device is active on the AT&T network."
If you get a software update via OTA oneshot, IMEI Registration and device is active on the AT&T network
[Preparaion for Software update via OTA]
Active AT&T Sim card
AT&T branded device (Galaxy S6 ATT or Galaxy S6 Active ATT or Galaxy S6 Edge ATT)
Wi-fi AP or hotspot.
Do you have another get a ATT OTA method without active ATT sim or account?
Or If you have successful OTA experience without active ATT sim or account,Please let us know.
Because, I hope to get a minor or major OTA in any oversea country.
Also I really really wouldn't understand AT&T Software's policy.
I have never seen this kind of OTA limitation is powerful Carrier in the UNIVERSE or COSMOS. It must be corrective by FCC.
For reference, Now VZW recent device get a latest FOTA update even NON-vzw sim and NON-vzw network.
I could update Verizon LG G3 device with NO SIM status in South korea.
Found ATT official announcement from ATT Official forum.

There isn't a legal requirement for any software company to offer updates to software. So regulating the distribution methods and choices is probably out of the question.
Any improvements to the product are for your convenience. Yes, we have come to expect them but again, there is no obligation by the manufacturer to offer them at all.

Jesus, you do know your carrier will roll out their update as well eventually right? Phone wars continues my friend. Just like Xbox or ps4 will get exclusives or early release before the other console, it's all just part of the war for your money.

There isn't a legal requirement for any software company to offer updates to software. So regulating the distribution methods and choices is probably out of the question.
Any improvements to the product are for your convenience. Yes, we have come to expect them but again, there is no obligation by the manufacturer to offer them at all.

Thank you for your suggestion. Please come to software update without Sim check or AT&T Account check.

Yah, seems like if you want OTA update, you must have an activated AT&T SIM card... Your best bet if you are in the US is to find a friend who has AT&T and borrow their SIM card so you can authenticate against the AT&T OTA server.

******I have an inportant information.******
I have a friend in Vietnam, I and him got an S6A.
I bought an S6A in Bestbuy, paid off.
He bought and S6A in ATT shop, paid off too.
But
I can get the unlock code after 2 days request in ATT webs => The staff in bestbuy told me, I can get the code if I buy ATT device in best buy for Free.
He tried like me, but the system said no => I asked 3 customers service in ATT website before, all of them said I have to contract an ATT SIM for 2 months (minimum $45/month for SIM card) and I could get unlock code after that for "free" after paid at least $90 for them.
the Important thing is :
My S6A (bestbuy) Cannot get OTA update (unlock or non-unlock) if I dont have ATT SIM.
His S6A (ATT shop) Can get OTA update (unlock or non-unclock) without ATT SIM card and another carrier in used. (he can get OTA for OF3 and the newest OF4).
*Yesterday,he bought an unlock code in a Vietnam mobile phone shop and It was unlocked, now he can use the vietnam's carrier.
I will show you the screenshot of his phone after I go home.
Sorry about my English.

Very good information, thank you for this!
Anyway any updates? Have you updated your (Bestbuy) phone?
Looks like the best way to buy S6A at ATT shop and unlock it at 3rd parties for $20-25 ?

Where do you live?
If you live in USA, you can active the ATT SIM card include the S6 Active's Box.
If you live in another country, I have no Idea for S6A which you buy in Bestbuy.
Follow the thread , I have a tip "how to active ATT sim for 26 days"

Thank you for reply! I want to purchase phone in USA (ATT or BestBuy) but I will use it in Finland with another GSM carrier. But according to the information above I would prefer to have any further software updates available for this phone.
Thanks!

Ok, Let's buy in ATT shop. After bring you phone in Finland, buy an unlock code (~ $20 - $50).
Unlock the phone and use like an perfect phone ever. S6A can use full options of GSM, UMTS and LTE.
sorry my bad English.
Unlocking & Software Updates
Perhaps this is no longer an issue, but in regards to being able to update the software for your phone when not on the AT&T network,
doesn't the following post cover it?: http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...e/downloading-flashing-att-galaxy-s6-t3260744

LG G4 H811 Unlock

It's become more than apparent that unlocking the LG G4 H811 variant is next to impossible, if you're not a T-Mobile customer. I'm on AT&T and I bought the phone from a T-Mobile employee, who purchased the phone to resell on Craigslist, using an LG promotion, exclusive to those employees. I add this detail to stress that the phone is not stolen, nor is it blacklisted. I've tried everything in my skill set to unlock it, to no avail. I've even taken it to a couple third party shops in Cleveland , who were stupefied at the new Unlock App T-Mobile forces on us to prevent unlocking. I want to use it as if I bought it from AT&T, calling, 4G data and all. Who can suggest the best possible method? I understand that a user on these forums can unlock it for $45, but this is a bit too steep for something I already spent a couple hundred dollars on. Please help!

I'm in the same boat you are in. Mine isn't blacklisted or anything T-Mobile said that the phone that I have is paid off but that it wasn't on their network for more than 18 days. I'm not understanding why if the phone is purchased outright why do you have to be on T-Mobile for a certain time? Or if their even telling me the truth.

I called their customer support and they told me to call LG and get the code, since T-Mobile gets it from them anyways. I called LG and they said to call T-Mobile... I called T-Mobile back and they told me to call the person who originally purchased the phone. I texted him, a guy about my age (I'm 21). Still waiting to hear back, but my God, the last thing I want to do when I sell something, is have the buyer come back and ask me for help. I feel like I'm bugging him. The thing I want is so simple, yet so godd**n difficult to achieve.
I am T-Mobile customer for a long time. If you have time to wait and want to get it unlocked for free you can do the following:
1) Ask some one you know with T-Mobile sim card and account and put his/her sim in your phone.
2) Make couple of calls so T-Mobile's system will register the device. You can then give the sim card back.
3) Remember that date and you may need to wait from 40 to 60 days.
4) After that period get same sim card from that person, put it in the phone and launch that Unlock App, pick "Permanent Unlock" and if you are eligible then great if not, that person will have to call T-Mobile and ask for the unlock code.
So the above is normal procedure to get a phone unlocked. This is what I do, but for me it is normal since I am a customer and able to use the phone while waiting that period.

Do you know how to access the frequency settings on the LG G4? I spoke to a very helpful representative and he was about to help me unlock it, when the line disconnected.

I don't, but you can search online and I am sure you will fine it.
World GSM Codes told me that they could do it but they could not. It was suppose to happen in a couple of days. When I inquired several days later as to why I haven't been unlocked they replied that they needed a couple of more days. Since then I have sent them a few emails asking why it hasn't happened and one requesting a refund, all of which have gone unanswered. I now have a paypal claim filed against them to get my money back.

Is it just me or does everyone's T-mobile LG G4 comes with an app that allows you to permanently unlock your device?
When I clicked on the "Device Unlock" app it allow me to choose from temporary unlock and permanent unlock, I chose the latter and it been working ever since on AT&T even after reset and root.

The temp unlock is good for 30 days. Afterward you will need to insert a valid T-Mobile SIM to reunlock it again. If you keep the phone on an active T-Mobile post paid line for 40 days, you can request permanent unlock and it will be unlocked for life.
Sent from my LG-H811 using Tapatalk
I haven't used it on T-mobile, been using it on AT&T. Don't know if it was paid off or not either. Bought it off a guy on Craigslist for about $220 after I buy the accessories needed.
Tried the device unlock app, chose the permanent unlock option and it's unlocked ever since. Never had this happened on a smartphone before, I was surprised myself.

would you mind sharing your build.prop?
I just noticed an ad on e-bay claiming the T-Mobile app unlock service is working again.
Wondering if this is true? My guess is no
