question and battery comparison - Samsung Galaxy Exhibit 4G

There are two parts to this post. First, i am trying to downgrade Skype again. When I lost my SD card, I lost the skype zip I was using. I have downloaded an apk file which is for a proper version, I think. In order to install it on my phone, should i zip it and then copy the zip over in recovery?
Also, because of my recent meltdown, I was able to do a real back to back comparison between the jb rom I had on the phone before and the rooted stock i have on it now. A;; of the jb roms, including slimbean, rebelrom and stock all use battery at the same rate. Frankly, I was surprised after what I had read from everyone, but it looks like I just need to anticipate charging up the exhibit once a day. For my level of use, that's just the way this phone works. if I want longer battery life, I'll have to get a bigger battery.

If the Skype file is an apk, shouldn't you be able to install it as an apk?
I'm not much of a worrier when it comes to battery life. When I know I'm not going to be around a computer or an outlet for awhile I just take it easy on my phone. All the ROM's I have tried seem to do well in battery life though. I'm running TripFX's & Cam's CE beta ROM thats in the general forum right now. I'll post a screen shot of the battery life tomorrow from using it at mild use.

Honestly, I haven't the foggiest how to install it as an apk. Just drag and drop it into the apps folder? That seems to simple...

Is the extension at the end ".apk" ? Or is it a zip file? if its an apk just find it in your file manager and install it from there. if its a zip file, I suggest using Es File Manager so you can open it and install it in the file manager.

It is an .apk file. My file manager is ES File Manager, but what do you mean, install it from there? I can transfer it from the computer to the sd card and then use the FM to put it wherever I need, but how do I get the phone to know it's there?

This is what I usally do.
Once you move it to the SD card you should be able to unplug your phone from the usb and then fine the apk in Es File Manager. When you find it just press on it and youll be brought to a instillation process.
Thats what i usally do.

Thanks, but no need, really. With the nearly 10 different roms I have used, none has gotten appreciably better life out of the battery. Or worse, really. As long as i only have to charge once a day, or while I'm sitting at the computer, I'm good. I just posted that comparison because lots of folks here spend a lot of time mentioning battery life.

I really liked youtube downloader. i wiped my phone and lost it. its not on market and has been pulled from the site.. is there any way i can get it or a program that can do the same function. i really liked that program. HELP

The file i downloaded was .apk
But i just dont know what to do with it...
sorry, let me clearify... the file you download is called "com.isaacwaller.youtubedownloader.apk.jar"... this does no good on the phone to install so i decompressed it so now its "com.isaacwaller.youtubedownloader.apk"... yet this is a folder now and not a file.apk.... so putting it on the sd and using an app installer doesnt do much when its a folder with the name only saying .apk... i need a file.apk so i can use an app installer, right? or am i way off? Think maybe because i use a mac has anything to do with it??? or does it need to be a dev phone? my phone isnt "unlocked," and im running rc33
but to answer your question Rescue7 if you do have a the file "com.isaacwaller.youtubedownloader.apk" and not a folder like i have... all you need to do is put it onto your sd card, then run an app installer. if you use linda file manager it will give you an option... if not use the application installer that you can download via the market

Hmm well I'm using a PC. And I don't have a dev phone, or an unlocked phone. Just a regular G1. Well why dont u just give it a try? maybe it'll work??
JLO: you're either going to have to download it using firefox or use right click + save as in safari, otherwise osx think's a zip folder and tries to decompress it as it downloads, which results in the .jar file.
Here is your application
GO TO THIS WEBSITE AND IT IS THERE. AND TELL OTHER PEOPLE CAUSE I WANT TO SHARE THIS APP WITH OTHERS CAUSE IT IS THAT GOOD.
http://allshadow.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=5415
IN ORDER TO PUT IT ON YOUR PHONE YOU WILL NEED TO USE APPMANAGER WHICH IS FREE FROM THE ANDROID MARKET.
http://allshadow.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=5417
TRY IT OUT AND BE SURE TO SPREAD THE NEWS THAT IT IS FREE FOR DOWNLOAD AT THE FIRST LINK FOR ANYBODY WHO WANTS THE PROGRAM.
solution
just go to keepvid.com from your phone to download youtube videos onto your phone from your phone.
simply just go to the video you want to download on the browser then hit menu then go to url the url is now highlighted on ur phone copy it by using (hold down menu button then press C on your keyboard) not the big menu button on the outside of the phone the button next to the Z key on the keyboard then paste the link to keepvid.com using (menu then V) for paste then download the mp4 walla use a video player to play the video u just got from youtube

I just thought I'd point out that you don't have to use firefox or save as.
Just delete the jar off the end of the filename. It does this when downloading themes also. So far, I haven't had any issues just deleting the .jar.

Love this app thank you so much!!!

(THEME) Stock Music app not so boring anymore...

Ok so I have been tinkering around for the past few trying to get the Fender Music app on my dream. Well I did it but the app sucks cause it's not FOR my device. And being that I don't know how to make it work right, I decided to go back with the stock app.
Enough rambling, you want the goods...
Backup before doing this cause I take no responsibility.
remove the .zip from the name.
Wouldn't hurt to resign it either...
Put the file in your theme's .zip. In the app folder within the .zip of course.
I don't know how to take screen shots but I will tell you to try it and you will like it. This works on my dream flawlessly. I hope the same for you...
This wasn't really that hard to do. Mostly because I don't know how to modify/make .9's nor these .xml's for that matter. But most of the visuals are what I have modified anyway so I don't see the need...
The one thing I have a problem with is the lack of album art. As soon as I figure that out, things will be nice!
This will be on my theme as soon as I get it out. I have grown to understand how long this takes for you themeer's out there. I thank you all for everything you do. But I would like to thank Binary for helping me understand the basics of things around here!!!
Which brings to my attention, this is based on CM 4.2.13......
screenshot.apk from market...
Thanks much. I was waiting for that actually though.
But that's what I will use when I have everything finished.
Knowing this environment though, I'll never finish...

You can take screenshots even easier with ddms.bat
In revision 4 just go to Device and Screen Capture (or whatever).
Simple.
Ok. Thank you. But I'm still going to wait until I finish my theme before I take screen shots. Until then, you'll just have to dl it to find out what it looks like...
Nice to see you getting so into this. If you want help with .9.pngs, Jairomeo taught me a nice trick that makes it very easy (assuming eclipse is set up).
Eclipse is set up I just don't know how to use it other than to start up a virtual android...
Gonna try it out now. I want to know what it looks like
/edit: here is the signed .apk (Or was it already signed?)
(push to system/app)
ok noob question lol... i downloaded the file but when i try to copy it to system/app folder it says file is read only.. something i missed?

yea. what he said.
This is outdated. I haven't had the time to work on it lately and I apologize for that. My theme hasn't seen any love for a few days either.
But it works and looks better than stock.
Here's how I install it.
Put music.apk in root sdcard folder. Use a file manager like Astro or And Explorer to navigate to it. Click it and install with package installer.
Enjoy!

Car Home

anyone know where I can download this app, i found it on the Androbin_R_ ROM.
Have you tried taking it from the ROM itself? Sometimes it works, sometimes not.
Just checked market, there is one called Custom Car Home,... any good?
Apparently Froyo has it built in,... try extarcting it from a Froyo ROM aswel,... Worth trying enit?

it is, but I am just not technically able enough to take it from the ROM,, i would not know where to start.....
Download the Rom you want.
Extract it on pc.
Navigate to system/app/
Copy the apk you want to your sdcard. I think it could be called carhome.apk.
Having the apk on your SD.
Open it with e.g. Linda file manager.
If it works with this Rom it installs fine.
Another way is using adb.
But that doesn't differ in what you get.

[Q] Over clocking DIY thread...

I have searched a lot, spent time trying to figure everything out.
I have Hero that I am trying to make BA for my little bro. I have the evo now. Rooted and tethering. Not much else I need to mess with on it. Fast enough for me. But my old hero is now rooted and has the app to tether. I can't figure out how the heck to over clock it. It is slow and I want to kick it up a couple notches for him.
I have searched and all the codes that you guys use at the top throw the searches off, or maybe I am searching for the wrong thing.
Any links to other threads would be great. That way when someone else searches just over clocking like I did it will come to this thread and then link to the useful threads.
Thanks in advanced.
I see you are rooted already, is the phone running a stock rom? If so think about installing [ROM] cyanogenMod 6.1 stable (<<<<search). Then you flash a [Kernel] [GPL] DecaFuct [2.6.29.6] (<<<<search) and install a app called OverClock Widget, it is easier to use than the other one you can use called SetCPU. Thats pretty much it, somebody may chime in that can put a few links up but I am on my phone right now so I cant.
DecaFuct Max 768Mhz Kernel
DecaFyct Max 698Mhz Kernel
Decad3nce's Kernel OP Thread
These are JayBob's CM6.2 ROM Downloads.
Okay, so I need to back up my phone? Can I use the app on the android market MyBackup by Rerwarre, LLC? Then I need to download the files you linked me to in this thread? And then what?
Okay. I am sure you are all tired of hearing from me. But I am going to flash a ROM that has a over clock on it. I have a question tho. When I download the files. It unzips them. By that I mean I can open the folder and explore all of the files. Does this make it impossible to load that ROM? Thanks for your quick responses in advanced.
You dont want the file unzipped. Leave it zipped and put it on the root of SD card, that means just on the SD card, not in another file. Then reboot into recovery by powering phone off, then hold down the power button and the home button at the same time, keep them down until recovery comes on. If a white page comes up instead of recovery that says clear storage, pull battery and try again. Once in recovery you should see a few options. Nandroid, select this by clicking track ball while highlighted, this will back up your current system. After that choose install zip from SD card, then select the rom you loaded on SD card. After is says done, choose reboot system now. Then find Gapps 12-18-2010, I think those are the latest ones. Put them on root of SD like you did the rom and reboot into recovery the same way, choose the install zip from SD and select the Gapp file. Then reboot system amd you will set phone up with google like you did when it was new. You can then install one of the kernels linked for you, I recommend the 768 one, download OverClock Widget from the market and set it to 748, if your phone reboots for no reason lower that to 729, 710, wherever it becomes stable for you.
Okay, I did nandroid, I cleared everything, and I loaded the zip'd file ( I was trying to say earlier it is my mac's default action to un zip the file when it downloads. So I re compressed it. This might be attributing to my later problems) ANd then I rebooted. And it looks and behaves exactly the same as before.
Any pointers or ideas why it did this?

Since you re compressed it, it may need to be resigned before flashing. I could be wrong though
What does resigned mean?
ANybody have any idea why my ROMS arent loading at all?
Not quite sure if this will work on mac, you may need to find a XP pc to do this from. Here is a link to a zip signer though, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=805766&highlight=zip+signer
Another thought...
Can you download the rom using the phone, then move file from download folder to root of SD card, using a file manager such as Astro or even better E Strongs File Explorer? I have read where some members have rooted, installed roms, kernels, theme, with no PC at all.
awesome idea on doing it from my phone. I didn't know it was a Mac problem. I can just run boot camp and boot up my mac with windows OS and try it on that. Thanks again.
Okay, i am trying to do it all from the phone. But the file is too large for the phones memory. And I can't figure out how to download righto the SD card. Any pointers here?

use the xda app and navigate to the thread that has the rom you want to install. from there click the link of the rom and it will go to SD card in a file called downloads. after completed plug phone into PC/mac and move that file/rom to root of SD card. Then reboot recovery and flash, done. There are literally 100+ threads on installing a rom, search, read, learn. What recovery do you have installed?
Okay downloading it to my Windows 7 bootcamp worked like a charm. I did the red dawn ROM. Isn't that one already over clocked?

Battery Fix 2.3.x

First thanks to kamma and his thread HERE. This fixed was 100% inspired by his attempt, i only had the benefit of having access to some files he didnt. This thread is based off his, but with the files from 2.3.3 which did not have the jumping issue.
I have NOT tested extensively, but in my limited experience(and that of a few others) this does fix the problem.
Code:
[color=#FF0000]USE THIS SCRIPT AT YOUR OWN RISK[/color]
This is just a proof-of-concept fix. I dont guarantee any improvement, because i have not much time to test it.
I simply replace battery libs and apps extracted from [color=#FF0000]ATT 2.2.3*[/color].
How to:
1. Download [color=#FF0000]CMW_Jug6_batfix.zip*[/color] (bellow in Attached Files)
2. Copy it to sdcard or sdcard-ext
3. Reboot into CWM recovery
5. Click "install zip from sdcard"
6. Choose zip from sdcard
7. Pick the [color=#FF0000]CMW_Jug6_batfix.zip*[/color]
8. Install
9. Reboot
V2 - Removed BatteryManager.apk & BatteryReport.apk as they are not needed
Gonna flash this now and reboot frenzy!
Brilliant, will try immediately! Does it matter if you switch between roms, do you have to re-apply then?
Will test, thanks Jug.
Guess I would need to deodex it for a deodexrom?

Yes as you go between roms you would need to reapply, that is until(if its working 100%) its added to the roms themeselves.

Its not as easy as just removing the odex files.... lol... it has to be actually "deodexed" there is a difference. I will do this if you don't know how...

Installed at 85% battery life, was thinking it was actually closer to 95% at the time I ran this as I hadn't done much since it was fully charged. Didn't wipe battery stats or anything, it started back up at 84%. Did a few things to see how quickly it would drop, when it came down to 81%, I rebooted and wiped battery stats and davlk cache. Took a while on reboot after those wipes, started up at 80%. Still think it should have been higher than the 85% it started at, so I'm charging up to 100% and running Battery Calibration app. Will edit this post when I get the results, but it's not bouncing around like it was before. Awesome work Jug6!
Edit: Charged it to full charge, wouldn't charge past 98%, so I ran the battery calibration app, restarted, and on restart is said 99% and full charged. It was recommended in the app to fully discharge battery and then fully recharge without interruption. Will try to drain it quickly -> Pandora!

I would appreciate it, I won't b able to until around 4cst. Granted I'm running this on an deobexed rom.
/me admits his knowledge of compatibility between deobexed/obexed is very lacking lol

I think I would need some of the 2.3.3 framework to do it though..
Basically,
Each .apk has a "classes.dex" file in it.. when a .apk or .jar for that matter has an .odex file associated with it. whish is the case with the Atrix and other phones too... what has happened is that the "Classes.dex" file has been taken out of the .apk/.jar file and placed in a .odex form. this way it is device spacific and cannot be moddified or replaced using generic .apk/.jar files .. i.e. customized ...
he reason it is "working" for you, is because your phone is the spacific device these files were made for... so it isn't crapping out. At least, i think this is the reason...
In order to run a deodex on these file though, I would need some of the reference files that they are dependant on in order to run the script to do so. hat is the "Boot class file paths" that you see below...
I am glad to see these are seeming to fix the problem though. I will see what I can do, but I am getting errors running the script:
Code:
D:\Atrix\Baksmali>java -jar baksmali-1.2.6.jar -x Ba

ok tried this out on kens gb rom, started at 96, played a game got it down to 93, rebooted into cwm, wiped dav and batt stats, rebooted, was still at 93. so im letting it get down to 85 or so and see if it keeps. this may be the fix for this. i thank you so much for it working this good jug, and hope it is implemented soon.
i just have one thing to say to jug::
: " ooooh ITS THE JUGGANAUT *****"
i have cherry 0.5b, i go in recovery with 83%, i flash this zip, no wipecache no wipe stats no wipe and when i reboot i have 83%, it's work well, and it work with deodex
I just did the following
- Phone was at 70%, restarted
- Phone then read 90%
- Installed this
- Phone still reads 90%, I will restart at lunch time in a few hours to see if it jumps at all
I am running Kenneth's stock 2.3.4 ROM
Thanks!
ok phone at 87, rebooting.....
edit: phone still at 87, YAY!!!!!!!!
Was at 73 before and after reboot, seems to be fixed so far...
Did the following:
-phone was showing 96% (about 3 hours ago)
-installed this (didn't wipe dalvik cache or battery stats)
-restarted and was showing 96%
-been using the phone for the last Hour
-phone showed 76%
-restarted
-phone is still showing 76%
Great finally with have a working solution
PS:why should I wipe dalvik cache?

Thanks just flashed this. Battery reads the same after reboot. Hopefully it will keep on working.

This seems to be working for me. Battery level persisted through multiple reboots. Flashed over Ken's 4.5 beta.
