[Q] Active Display + Light Flow - Moto X Q&A

My question(s) are for the Moto X consumer/retail version on Verizon .... I'm trying to decide whether to unbox my phone when it (if) arrives from Motorola or just send it back and stick with my bootloader unlocked Razr M. Due to a hearing loss, I highly depend on repeat notifications & repeat vibration reminders, which Light Flow has done like a charm. But on the Moto X, the game changes ....
First, I've searched here, Google, and other sources but not getting clear answers to my questions. So, posting here in hopes someone can shed some light, i.e. something more than "They work on other phones, but I have no idea if it would work on the Moto X retail phone." :silly:
Question 1: If I'm understanding correctly, after rooting (i.e. stock rooted), Active Display continues to work, right?
Question 2: It sounds like Light Flow may work on a rooted Moto X (so I could at least set repeat vibration notifications), but unsure if Active Display would continue to function at the same time? I've seen contradictory comments but nothing specific that they would work in harmony ... I'm assuming not.
Question 3: How long will Active Display continue to pop-up reminders, for just a couple minutes? Or until you dismiss the notification?
Thanks!

Active display will continue to "breathe"your notifications until you clear them. The Moto X does not have a notification led, so lightflow is useless.

Active notification still works after rooting. You can use xposed mod called gravitybox and it will turn your navigation buttons into notification lights.

Actually, Light Flow controls more than LEDs ... it also offers separate audio reminder and vibration reminder tweaks, such as custom vibration patterns and reminder frequency/duration. Its the latter that I use a lot.
So if no one can confirm Light Flow will work for at least vibration reminders, I'll likely put my new-in-box X on swappa. My bad for not really understanding the X didn't have LEDs.

Thanks ... and cool! I'm currently using xposed and gravitybox on my Razr M so will check out that tweak. Wasn't aware of it so really appreciate your mentioning it!

There's also noled found here https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.led.notify
Which works well, you can set which notifications you want, how long the notifications stays on

If notification led is critical to you, you should also consider droid mini. It is the only new Moto phone that has one. Smaller than the X but otherwise very similar.

I was unaware that lightflow also did repeating sound and vibration notifications now, it's been a couple years since I used it. However, I installed it and tested, and both the repeating sound and vibrate options work perfectly on the Moto x.
Thanks, I'll be using it for important contacts now.

I want to thank each of you for your helpful input before I decided to grab a $150 off "X". Finally got it Friday and after rooting and getting it set-up, find I really like the Active Notifications / "breathing", along with Handcent notification customizations, Xposed/Gravity .... and keeping my unlimited data.

Any way to customize AN? Like say changing the rate of 'breathing' etc

I think he wants to extend the period of time of when the notification LED is blinking when a new SMS/ missed call is waiting. I read that it doesn't blink until you actually look at the SMS or look at the list of missing calls, but stops after a certain interval.
I hope this is clearer... don't have an answer though

I use this program too. Highly recommended.
Also "Handcent SMS" will allow custom LED notifications and also happens to be the BEST SMS handling app out there with tons of features (and free)
I bought "Tasker" yesterday.
There you might be able to create a script with a LED-Loop if notifications from App XY or all are received. Doesnt work at all this time, but its my fault.

i feel no restrictions in accupower since useing Tasker! If you leave the DisplayOffCheckSettings to 600 secs, i think there will be no problems. Try it out !
is there the possibility to change led color?
there's only red and green?
No chance
Maybe if the Device is rooted. We'll see soon

NoLED and menu buttons

Does anyone know how to make the lower buttons, back, menu, search, and home buttons not light up when I receive a message our missed call while using the NoLED app?
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
I don't believe there is that option within the NoLED app. The BLN has to be built into the Kernel I believe.... I'm sure there will soon enough be a supporting Kernel for this as there is much support for the Galaxy series phones and this sort of thing. As I am not a dev I have no idea how easy/hard it would be but I cant wait
The op was trying to turn the lights off not on. As far as I know it just needs to be updated for gingerbread/ns so that the bottom lights don't turn on. You can follow the original app thread here. It looks like the dev won't be working on it til after the holidays.
Why not to use the flash led as in the desire?

As in the camera flash? Well if your phone is laying on it, that probably doesn't work too well
Plus that LED is bright. Not sure what it's power requirements are compared to using NoLED.

That's what Back Light Notification (BLN) is and it needs a supporting kernel to be ported over.
Didn't want to start a whole new thread just to ask a question, but for whatever reason, NoLED doesn't work for me. I'm on Android 2.3.1 running stock (not LP or AWD). I've read the FAQ and I believe I have everything set up correctly. I call myself and miss it and I've emailed myself (different accounts) to test it, but I don't get anything on my black screen.
SOS?

I honestly doubt its the app. Blacks on SAMOLED consume nearly 0 power.
Check your apps power consumption under Menu > Settings > About Phone > Battery Use.

Yes to both. I have the widget set to "on," restarted my phone, and before, made sure all the settings were correct.
Still, nothing shows up after sending myself emails and giving myself calls (didnt' pick up, of course).
Doesn't seem to work; I'm running 2.3.1 with stock launcher.
Just read the FAQ. It's the "No Lock" app that's preventing NoLED from functioning. That's a shame because sometimes when I'm at home, I dislike having to swipe or enter my pattern key to unlock the phone.
NoLED works fine now. Thanks y'all.

[Q] Disable Moto Voice in favor of Google Now

Does anyone know of a way to disable Moto Voice and simply use the voice wake to activate Google Now? Perhaps via an Xposed module?
Moto Voice, in it's current iteration is too slow and not value added enough for me to prefer it over Google Now. Plus, if I hear "Opening Google" one more time, I'm going to go crazy.

it's pretty simple: open the Moto App, tap the Settings button on top right, tap the Voice button/icon and uncheck the Launch phrase. you might have to setup up voice activation on Google Now. like you i prefer Google Now for the time being. hope this was helpful.:good:

That will disable the voice wake. I'm looking for a way to jump straight into Google Now anytime I say my Moto Voice launch phrase.
OK, yeah that's different. Interpreted that you wanted to just go to Google Now. With my suggestion, saying "OK Google" takes you to Google Now (vs your moto launch phase).

Do you have the pure edition or carrier? Pure if you root there is a way to do it, if its carrier and locked you can't, sorry. Hopefully Lollipop will make it possible too, Nexus 6 has ambient display to rip off active display, and will use the always listening chip it has to act like moto voice, but built into google now.

Thanks! Now I need to figure out if I want to root my phone now or wait for L and Xposed to run on ART.
Lollipop is supposed to be able to do ok google from screen off with phones using the always listening chips. The nexus 6 and 9 are supposed to use it with theirs. I'm still hoping that our moto's well be able to use it as part of stock android so i don't have to use moto voice at all. Only i don't know if they intend to add custom phrase support, which i could stand losing. Though i concur about ART xposed, that i can't wait for.

[Q] Enabling Google's "Ok, Google" Detection

Firstly, Merry Christmas Moto X peeps!
Ok so I am grateful for Motorola to include touches control. Love it. But I recently realized that enabling touchless control through Google Now on my Nexus 7 has a way faster hotword detection than the Motorola touchless control way. Unfortunately when I try to disable Touchless control on the Moto X and then enable Google's "Ok, Google" hotword detection the option is greyed out. I'm sure this has been discussed before but I was unable to find the answer. I have an unlocked bootloader, rooted, xposed, running stock 4.4.2. Is anybody aware of a method for enabling the Google Now hotword detection instead of Motorola's Touchless control?

Even if you did switch to it, You'd lose touchless control. It won't work when screen is off.
Also, it will take its share of battery life from you, where moto's touchless control battery drain is minor.
Just food for thought. ?

I don't know if it will work on screen off as I am still waiting for my moto x to arrive (got one as a secondary device and I am excited about it) but I am pretty sure the google now option to listen is greyed out because you don't have English US set as your system language (it's got to be US if you set it to UK for example it won't work) and then again you may have to set it again through google now options too for it to actually work. Give it a try and tell me how it goes.

Disable launcher suggestions, alternative/hack for notification LED?

I love the device so far, ran only into two minor hiccups.
1) I had other Huawei phones recently and either this is new or I managed to disable it previously and forgot how: When I open the app list I get a row of "suggestions" and find those useless/annoying. Can I fix that?
2) I .. didn't even know that it would come without a notification led before it arrived at my doorstep. Somehow every phone I owned in the last decade or so had one and I start to miss it. Are there any software fixes for this, maybe using the always on display mode?

for 1) - unninstall tips app
Thst doesn't change the behavior (bit is probably a good idea anyway..).
My app drawer starts with a row of suggestions (recent apps I guess), a little bit of separation space and then I have the normal A-Z listing of apps.
The suggestions are bad/crap/wasting space 99% of the time, so I want them gone. Tips doesn't do that as far as I can see..

For the second the P30 pro has Always on display and after the 124 update shows all messages from all apps. Even from 3rd party apps.
How.. why..
That is a (cool?) app to show your battery status around the notch area.
It certainly has nothing to do with the app drawer/launcher problem, but I also don't see the relation to the missing notification led (although it would be cool if the app could function as that instead of a battery indicator, but then it also would need to be displayed whole the screen is "off").
Unrelated, no?

Unfortunately that seems not good enough.
For one, notifications are funky/working only half the time for me so far.
Worse, the notifications that do appear on the always on display are gone after I unlocked the phone once. Even if the notification still exists/wasn't dismissed, it's now gone from the always on display.. :-/

Thanks, that .. might be a solution, maybe. Will spend some time with it, a quick install was both interesting (it's really customizable) and disappointing (some things didn't work at all and I'm .. unsure how it interacts with my default lock screen, how the unlock process is changed).
Maybe just needs more time to check it out? Unfortunately I haven't found proper documentation and the spelling in the options is a bit hard in places [English is a foreign language for me too, so no blame here].
