x reality - Xperia Z1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I noticed that whenever I take photos with x reality on, when i view the pictures it will take 2 secs for the x reality to take effect. Is this normal? Think of it as you can see the transition of color altering in 2 secs.. It annoys me that i have to wait sometimes to see if I have to repeat my shot or not..

Have you updated to the latest firmware and album app?

Yep. Im on 14.1.G.2.257. I dont know if this is normal or not..

Are you sure it's X-Reality? The superior auto mode by default takes an 8MP image but has the detail of a 21 image...I forgot the name of it but it kinda samples the pixels and makes the sharpest image possible out of it. It takes a few seconds for it to kick in so it's a bit blurry/not detailed for 1-2 seconds before the whole picture loads up. It doesnt have to do with x-reality.

Itwas prevalent in the previous updates. But Sony minimized it in the latest Album. Try viewing it in any other app like QuickPic

Turn off the x-reality feature. Imo the picture-quality looks better without it.
X-reality is same as bravia engine. It only tries to make your pictures look better in the gallery.

Nexus 4 Flash Photography problems

A request to the people who've already got their nexus 4!
Can you take some pictures in-doors in relatively ****ty light conditions? I want to see how your flash works.
When taking pictures with flash on I've noticed that the ISO the phone uses is very high.. 800? It's like the phone does not know its using the flash.
I have taken some pics with my old HTC wildfire s and the nexus 4 to compare them - here are the results:
LINKS DEAD
Can someone please take some flash photos from up-close with their nexus 4 for a comparison?
Thanks!
Links died, please see the photos attached!
I can take some sample pics later but I have noticed the flash blowing out pictures when in marginal lighting conditions (indoors+early morning+no overhead lighting) to the point that I'm better off turning the flash off because the camera does a much better job without it.
And at night I've been opting for HDR.
You can see here how the woodgrain gets blown out, I'll post more pics as I take them.
For comparison here is the same shot with no flash.
This will happen with any camera that is used right up close like that.
Another stupid thread trying to find problems.
It doesn't happen with my sensation or pm1, so it doesn't happen with every camera and I just did an upclose shot to demonstrate.
I had to go through my pictures but I found some that show the same issue and a completely different issue when using the flash. I'm sure these things will be fixed with software but flash photography is certainly not the n4's strong suit, although I do find low light photography to be pretty good.

have you even seen the pictures from the original post? They were taken with two different mobile phone cameras, both with FLASH ON!
Maybe the nexus 4 flash is just more powerful than the flashes you used previously.

That isn't how flashes should work, the software should do a bit of metering and then limit output for the situation it seems that this isn't happening correctly (it is happening because the N4 will flash before the picture is taken) which is why I think it will be fixed in a software update.
i think its bug with camera driver
Has anyone tried after todays update?

If you don't like it why bother to comment? Lol,
I have found the flash being too strong a bit of a frustration it's not a deal breaker but it is something they could sort, thankfully it can still take reasonable shots without the flash in many lighting situations.

Does the Nexus 4 really have a flash or is it just a light that comes on and stays on when in camera mode with flash selected. I mean is the light off and then flash on when the shutter is activated?
As mentioned, I find HDR helps a lot in low light. It does use the flash, but I am not sure if it is for the shot or for pre-shot metering.

It's a regular flash that comes on as needed. Stays on only for video.
Oh yea, it does sometimes stay lit for longer than I would have thought for HDR. But I think that is a plus that it can even use flash in HDR mode (my iPhone doesn't).

Yes it pre lights the subject to meter and then flashes again when the picture is taken.
You guys can always try different apps. I used zoom in think it s called on my i9001 s plus.

Yes, the flash feels definitely a bit wonky compared to my S3. I also find that sometimes even after I touch to focus, it refocuses and takes a blurry picture anyways. That and because the touch screen is less sensitive than I'm used to, I usually miss the shutter button the first time and end up pressing harder and shaking/moving the camera the second time.
I'll try to replicate your flash shots but looking at out of the box first shots in auto WB i can tell that either the sensor, optics, software or combination of all three result in pathetic images for a flagship camera. My 3mp samsung produces better pictures. Will try to post some pictures tomorrow.

[Q] How to get this camera to make good pictures

Howdy! I've got this phone for 3 days now. One of the main reasons to choose this one, is the camera. It should give stunning pictures, right? Wrong.
I can't for the love of me get even one good picture. Each and every one is either out of focus, distorted in some way, or it looks like there's not enough light (even when the picture is taken outside).
I started out with the automatic mode. What I dislike there, is that it never chooses the max. resolution. Manual mode, I can't get it to make good pictures either; though that might be because of lack of expertise.
Is my device broken? Am I doing something wrong? Help would be appreciated.

Thank you for your reply. I'm currently on the newest firmware. I'm running RomAur v3.2. I had the same problem on a different modified stock ROM of the latest firmware build.
I only know for good light condition, you set the ISO to as low as possible and 20mp manual and need a pair of steady hands. I still havent figure out low light condition, some ppl suggest twilight mode.
1. manual mode. the automode is bull****
2. fullsize. you can resize after the shooting^^
3. let the iso as low as possible. remember that the image becomes a little brighter than in the preview. use flash if its dark
i dont have any problems with the camera, even if taking pictures of moving obejcts in dark conditions. just stop shaking your hands and geht the iso lower^^

This is with bad lighting (Sun was shining at the cam), a view from my window. Is this the quality I should expect from this phonecam?
Inside, it's never sharp. There simply seems to be too little light to make sharp pictures. The flash does nearly nothing. The low ISO setting makes it lag very much as well, reducing the screen fps to 3 or something like that. I guess it's difficult for the device to keep up.

there are two apps much better than FV-5
1) Pro Capture: More details. Sharper pictures. aiding grid to get great shots. (but you can't manage ISO level and the max resolution is 8MPX)
2) Camera Zoom FX: Faster focus. More MPX option (18MPX resolution is available)

Then my device is broken. I tested a few shots next to a Galaxy Note 3, and it made much (MUCH) better pictures than my Z1. Tried all kinds of settings, no way to make it right. So mine must be ****. I'm getting it exchanged because of a lazy pixel anyway, but I'm really disappointed in Sony here. I thought they made quality products. :x

Mmm, can you explain me better auto mode? Do you selected a scene? Do you select single focus point or multi point?
Metering? (Can you explain this)
HDR or image stabilizer?
Do you use the hardware button to take pictures or the software one? I noticed that using the hw one after you press focus and then more to shoot produce a little movement that can make your photo bad. Am I the only one that find the camera button too hard?
Thanks a lot!!!!

Ok. I got tiny ble and red pixels too when the camera is in low light. But not like on your phone. Try to set up the setting on you phone to the best quality you can. Take a picture in Low and High light. If on the pictures there are not visible pixels that means is the preview the problem of you camera. If is the preview you can live with that, it's your choice. If not go for a replacement and explain the problem, but I don't know if the warranty cover that.

The picture is too dark, can be even a reflection like the small red point in the middle but if you are refer about the tiny white pixel, in this case is a faulty pixel. But I think is just a coincidance.

Yes it is a bit. The lens are clean? The leans are dirty in some way?
Also you have to take in consideration the poor quality of the picture because the low light make the picture more distorted. Is very hard for the camera to processing that king of pictures. You will never take this picture as a good picture so I will delete it. You try the perfection and is ok, I did this too. Try to take a nice clean normal light pictures, if they are good and no preview problem (solved) and no strange distortion you are fine. If there is any problem with the lcd pixels or with the lens you should have the problem all the time in the same place. So I think is not your case. Everything is ok..

No that is the phone trying to display something in the dark, the red bleed is any little bit of light coming into the lens. The scene is just too dark for the phone to render on the screen.

Seriously dude, with almost no light for the camera to render something on the display you are lucky you can even see anything. Liveview will only show you what it can based on real time processing, so in low light will most likely look much darker, in that light the shutter is probably going to to about 1 second, therefore the phone can't liveliew that because it will piss you off every time you move the camera waiting 1 second for the picture to refresh

Yep because it is too dark to show the colours correctly, it is hard for the camera to display, the red pixels is light sneaking past into the lens. Other cameras display the image as a higher iso preview so allow more light in, but change when taking the shot, not sure why Sony don't increase the this. BTW all my point and shoots and even my DSLRs in liveview have this problem in low light, unless I change the ISO high.
Maybe root your phone and download monxdified ROM, it has some camera tweaks. Try not to use superior auto, and use manual mode for best results, that way you can control many different settings.

Panorama mode: "Cannot take picture. Please pan faster."

I'm trying to take a panorama with my Z3C. Lighting is good (bright daylight). I've panned from very slow to very quickly. Everytime, it says it cannot take the picture and tells me to pan faster. "Cannot take picture. Please pan faster."
I also tried it indoors just to see. Same error message.
Any ideas? The superior auto mode and manual modes work fine. This is my first time trying panorama and it's simply not working. Thanks.
Edit: One more piece of info. In the little "preview" at the bottom of the screen that shows a tiny version of the panorama that is being taken, it IS filling in as expected, so it appears that things are working. But when I take my finger off the shutter it gives me the error message.

It takes practice to get it right. I believe that if you also change the altitude it will say the same. So try to pan at the same height or it will also say the same thing.
Thanks for the input. I've tried about 50 times. Can't seem to get it!

Nope, didn't know that, and it makes Sony panorama mode completely worthless. I don't always need my panorama to be the maximum width permitted by the software. Sometimes i only need it to be slightly wider that one picture would allow.
I think this is the first phone I've had in years that forces panoramas to be the same size every time. Ridiculous.

Hey mate, thanks a lot for mentioning that you use Google Camera for Panoramas. I want to purchase the Z3C but have this huge concern over the small resolution of panoramas.
Could you please upload a good highest possible res panorama image here? I want it just to check the quality of the panorama. I don't want panorama images to be limited by Sony's hardware, that's the thing. Could you please upload a full size panorama? Thanks a lot!

Could you please upload a good highest possible res panorama image here? I want it just to check the quality of the panorama. I don't want panorama images to be limited by Sony's hardware, that's the thing. Could you please upload a full size panorama? Thanks a lot!

I have managed to get a half panorama on my Xperia Z3 (Not compact model) and when you get the photo that has grey you just need to crop it, very hard to get it perfect though becuase it still expects you want the entire sized pano -_- heres a pic of a half pano I took on my Z3.
Works fine on mine although I've found it doesn't like low light conditions, that's when it starts giving me the pan faster error...

Thanks a lot for responding with your helpful photo and comment, I'm sorry I wasn't active on this site and I forgot about the question that I asked here.
I got the Z3C finally just 10 days ago! Haven't installed the Google Camera app as yet, as I am waiting for my MicroSD card to arrive so that I don't block up all the internal storage. Once I get it, I'll install the Google Camera app and check out the Pano on my own too.
Thanks for your help mate, appreciate it!

[Q] Moto x 2013 camera

There seems to be some problem with my moto x camera!
The pictures are little blurred or noisy, I compared the pictures with nexus 5 and it they are not even close.
I can't find much settings here to adjust focus or exposure. Can some help.
Attached some random clicks from my camera.
The moto x has never been known for its camera.

I totally agree!! But the pictures were more clear in the beginning or for some pictures at least .
Is there any settings update or app that could overcome this issue.
Seriously the pictures are worse than a regular 5MP lumia mobile.

I get best results with HDR and outdoors. I also use auto flash and auto HDR inside. That is a hit or miss. Not saying I don't ever get good shots. But coming from a note and a s4 there is no comparison.

Another option. Has advanced features.

Thank you., I already tried that,
But the problem started after installing the app., unlocking advanced options.
The pictures were not at all clear. I might have tampered with unnecessary options.

Maybe try to clear the data on just the stock camera app. That should restore all the default settings.
You could try to turn on control focus and exposure, it allows you to drag a box over the area you want focused. It helps in certain scenarios. Like others have already said, cameras have never been a strong suit for Moto

Clean the lens

The phone won't just take worse pictures with time.
You might have micro scratches too.
Please check this screenshot!
May be there are some scratches!
I observed one more disturbance when I open my camera,
Seeing some vertical lines while I was trying to take a picture!
Seems like magnetic disturbance! Is this expected?
Attached a pic for reference,
And the images are fine from close distance but the more distant the object is its get blurred, which is not the case for 8mp nexus 5.
I compared the camera's of my mobile moto x and moto g second gen, seriously my photos were out of focus and missing clarity.
As well the vertical lines observed in my phone are not there in moto g.
Will restore to factory settings and check it, anything else I can do?
