[Q] Water Damage. . . - Xperia Z1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Was at the beach today. Took my phone in with me. I was holding it above the water for a few minutes when I went in, then for a minute or two had it submerged under the water. Took it out to take a photo. BAM, screen wouldn't turn on. Tried resetting it using volume up and power button. Worked fine, everything was good until boot was complete. (aka screen wasn't flickering).
When it was finally on, SIM card not read, SD card not read, display flickering, camera unavailable. After about 30 seconds of being on, powered itself off. (Tried powering up multiple times after trying to dry more, no hope.) So, I decided to dry it completely with my towel and leave it beside my bag with flaps open and let it dry out in the sun. Came back after that, turned it on, screen was working okay, SIM card was detected, slightly normal for a few seconds. Shut itself off once more, tried again this time it was flickering etc. (FLICKERING ONLY STARTS AFTER BOOT IS COMPLETED...) I decided to give up on it and wait a few (more than 6) long, phone-less hours until I get home and try the rice thing.
When I was on my way home (a few hours later), I tried it again. Now all it does when I hold the power button to turn it on is vibrate three times (after the power on vibrate) and then nothing happens, shuts itself right off as soon as it is pressed. No screen light up, nothing. I decided to plug it in, faint red LED is lit and it just vibrates three times repeatedly.
P.s. The flaps were closed COMPLETELY, checked every few seconds, water damage indicators under flaps are clean plain white, yet when I dried the phone's exterior completely and the opened the flaps I could see heaps of water on the inside of them. It's been four hours and I'm still blowing out water and waiting for my rice.
Help, what happened?
Flaps were sealed tightly, yet water is all inside the phone, even the camera lens has water bubbles (at one stage it had condensation - which has been happening for at least a week prior to this).
Could this be repaired for free under warranty because obviously this shouldn't have happened as all of the flaps were SEALED.
This be trippy shiz.
I be trippin.
This shiz cray.
Thanks heaps :laugh::good:

Yeah, but what's that got to do with water entering the phone

I guess. If I were you, I would try warranty. It's the only option. Or get insurance and file a claim in a week or so if you can.

Still have warranty then replace ,no warranty buy new phone. Next time happen like this you can take battery out and put the phone and battery into the bag of rice leave there for awhile.Rice will suck the water out
rule of law.. never ever put your battery back to power on your soaked phone.... it'll do much harm than good.. it might circuit your Note's motherboard in the process.....thereby the only thing to do if that'll be the case is to replace it.
what you should have done is to just.. yeah.. blow dry it... then I agree, put it on a vessel full of dry rice and and cover that vessel up. Leave it there for 1 week max... that should leave all water out of your phone, yeah rice sucks out the moists and dews off your phone.

no idea.. use a hair drier with low heat instead.. will always work better...
although i know that rice will absorb the water if its in contact with water and not the phone body itself.
The rice trick certainly works and is safer than using a hair dryer. Probably too late for OP though.

Here's the definitive guide if you drop any phone into water...
1. MOST IMPORTANT: The moment you get the device out of the water REMOVE THE BATTERY.
2. Gently shake out excess water.
IF IT FELL IN SALT OR FOUL WATER: put the phone (not the battery) in some clear, clean fresh water, swish it around a bit then shake it off. This is important because salt does very nasty things to electronics and you want to get out as much salt as possible.
3. Place the phone and the battery in a bowl of dry uncooked rice -OR- in a plastic bag with some of those desiccant packs.
DO NOT USE hair dryers, ovens, microwaves, etc.
4. Let it sit in the rice for at least 24 hours. Longer is better.
5. Remove, insert battery, then hope for the best.
Ok, I put it in rice lets see after a few days what happens. Thank you all!
Put it in a a bowl of rice, cook it then eat.. Just kidding..
Yes, that rice method works.. Saved my Xperia X10 that way...
But from what you have stated that you tried powering it up after an hour, that might have killed it.. (but hopes are still not lost)
In regards to burtcom's post, its better if you use pure distilled water to clean it.. that way, it would have 0% chance to further do some more short circuits in case there is still some charge left on the capacitors on the board.

I9001 Dead battery on mainboard?

Hello everybody,
I think I have a serious problem with my SGS+. On the mainboard is something that looks like a small battery. It is located between the camera and the loudspeaker (see attached photo). The (assumingly) battery is covered with acid. Two days ago some water poured into my phone through the headphone jack, i recognized it the next day. Since then the power button started to react badly, until it died completely today. I cant even turn my phone on (i have no access to a computer). Might that problem has something to do with the thing on the mainboard? And if it is a battery, can i replace it (the type would be useful)?
Any advice would be helpful.
Thank you for reading my question!
jazzjoe
I am no expert on this, but my uneducated guess is that it is fluid related to a blown capacitor rather than a battery, at least i would draw that conclusion firmly if we were talking about a pc motherboard.
Sent from horseback.
Thank you for your response. Well if it is a blown capacitor, what could be the consequence? By the way. When i woke up this morning the power button magically respondend, so right now i'm writing from the device. The button reacted a few more times (tried it with locking the device not shutting it down), then it stopped reacting again, that was 5hrs ago. Everything else works fine by now. Can i replace the power button unit? And if it is possible how?
Anyway thank you for your interest, i hope some ideas still to come.
Greetings
Jazzjoe

clean first, wrap in tissue paper and place it in dismantle form in a bag a rice for a day or two ...than try it
If it IS a blown capacitor, you could experience anything from failing to power up to cpu overheating. The liquid from capacitors is electrolyte and usually brownish in color.
I don't think it is possible to replace it by soldering a new one on like one could do with a pc motherboard.
Again, I might be far gone here, I would assume that the capacitors in a phone would be smaller than that and I haven't done any research on it.

Its a Battery-LI(2ND) Bat 501 Part NO: 4302-001180....But its best to solve water damage FIRST .
Download a i9000 technician manual to get details from My Android Collections it would be similar for i9001
Thank you very much, all of you have been a great help! So you believe the power button issue is caused by the water? Then i'll do the rice and tissue treatment and will later stick to the battery. Thanks again, i'll report the results.

Hello again,
after 24+ hours in rice i reassambled the phone. It took me 2 hours to start it. There must be some problem with the on off switch. I met a guy who has some experience with pcs and he said it might be a cold solder joint. What do you think? Might there be another explanation. Like i said, once the phone started it runs smooth. The battery by the way should be something like the cmos at a computer, so it wouldn't bother me if it is dead. Any ideas?
jazzjoe
Ps: is there any way to turn the phone on without a pc?
Sent from my GT-I9001 using xda app-developers app
There should be a couple of connectors that you could short with a piece of metal if only the power button itself is broken. But I have no idea where they are or if they're accessible at all.

Sounds a little bit dangerous to me. Any other ideas?

Frankly, it would take a lot more time to fully dry out a water damaged phone with Rice, as moisture stuck in between chips and contacts are to minute and in accessible to be fully removed. ( an XD posted a few days back, that he left his unrecoverable water damaged phone , and after 8 months it was working fine by itself) so .... it may need more time and I think compressed air is one way to get water out of headphone slots
The power switch is prone to damage as it is sandwiched in between the front and back covers of the phone , IF you did not notice it is can be bent or spliced by the forcing the back cover when you assemble it, since it is only a flex (film)
IF your problem came to be because of water damage than the problem is not due to switch but due to water causing the switch to fail, and its odd your battery is leaking, as this never happens in normal circumstances ...these batteries can last at least 5 to 10 years ...so you need to do some goggling to find out why a battery will leak
I have the same problem.
The phone is not mine, it's my brother's one.
I've opened it and the button battery is oxidized.
I have to ask my brother if he has water "problems".
Anyhow the phone doesn't charge anymore so it won't turn on. I have to find a way to charge battery and try to switch it on.
It will be a pity to trash it ;D

Issues after water damage

Hello everybody,
my phone has been dropped into a pool for a couple of minutes, but first it seemed to be all right.
The first problem was, that the phone gone crazy, and every time i've wanted to lock it, it started the camera app. Then a couple of hours later the phone went into safe mode, and the vol down and the power buttons doesn't worked. After that i've dissasembled the phone and wiped the things around with some tissue thingy that was soaked in alcohol. It was some medical thing. Then i've put it back together, and it switched on, but the battery doesn't charge, or not every time, but at least the phone is not in safe mode anymore and the buttons are all working properly, the only thing what isn't working is the wifi. At the moment i'm only struggleing with battery, because most of the time it's not charging it only shows a battery with a question mark in the middle, but the green led is on and the phone is doing this vibration when you turn it on, but it's not booting, the screen stays black. I can reach the fastboot mode and the recovery but not the system. Can anyone help me what might be the problem? Software or hardware?
I hope that i was quite clear.
Cheers
It can really be both SW and HW. Basically it´s HW.
Once you do proper cleaning process too late and not very well, or you don´t do your celaning properly, you are going to have you device dead earlier or later. You have to disassemble the PCB to its primes, take of the shieldings of circuity, and clean it with some alcohol and tootbrush or better ESD protective brush gently but deeply. Then, you need to dry it for 48 hours in 50-60 degrees and then see what happened after assy. Also SW can be damaged, so you can try to flash it (load new ROM). If there is no success, it´s simply dead.
Your phone has oxidized due the water.
Go to Motorola and ask if they'll change your phone. You maybe lucky and get a brand new one.

This phone is NOT water resistant, only the screen is...
By the way, if any oxidization is found on your phone, warranty won't work.
Do we have some official statement? I saw in few reviews, that they mean (also) internals - whole PCB coating....
Sorry for the late answer...
If a phone is fully waterproof, then it is a strong marketing argument.
Look on the Motorola website, nothing talks about this. On the contrary, the Sony Xperia Z explicitly shows this ability, just look at its advertisement.
The Razr i is only splash proof: you can drop a small amount of liquid on the screen, it won't hurt the phone.
That's the only thing that is true.
Reporting the contrary is dangerous for users, beware of this when you read a review.

[Q] I water damaged my NEW Xperia Z?! HELP?

So, my Xperia is brand new! And, obviously I've dipped it in water a couple of times.. mostly to cool it down. [because it gets heated up as heck!] Yesterday, in about 4 a.m. my phone was on charge and it got really hot. So I decided to dip it in water. I disconnected the charger and closed the charger flap. I put it in my pant pocket [bear in mind, my pants were a little tight] .. I took out my phone and without double checking i put it in a mug of water. The charger flap had become loose an when I took it out it might've opened and BAM! Red dye and ****ed up front camera. I FREAKED the heck out! Its a pricy phone and its hardly been a month and they have no warranty if it gets water damaged due to open flaps! Its even more pricy, where I live. But whatever, it was Still working okay.. except for the front camera. I searched some forums and found one that said that 'The water itself doesn't harm the phone, turning it on with water in it might' .. so I switched it off and kept it aside. I woke up today at about 1:00 p.m. and out of curiosity I turned it on. And THERE! The screen now went crazy, turned off and on by itself. The screen is okay because everytime i restart it [Power button + Volume up] it does show the 'Sony' and then 'Xperia' signs then the start up colourful thing does happen but then the screen goes black and the now I can't even switch it off! I did do the vacuum/hair dryer thing. What else can I do? I can't just let it go to waste! Its brand new! PLEASE HELP?! :crying:

Vacuum/hair-dryer are both bad ideas for electronics. The vacuum is bad because it creates a lot of static electricity, and the hair-dryer because, obviously, it heats the phone up to high temperatures.
What you should have done immediately was to turn it off, open all the flaps and put the phone in a bag of rice, letting the rice absorb the water for around a week or so (or at the very least 3-4 days), preferably with a drained/removed battery but this isn't really an option with Xperia Z. After this you need to make sure to get all the rice out before closing the flaps and starting it up.
Fingers crossed nothing has short circuited and/or corroded yet!
And using water to cool the phone, while it seems like a good idea, has to be the dumbest excuse for ruining your phone I've ever heard.
Take it for repair. That is your only option. You will have to pay because the water ingress indicator is red.
Learn from this and don't submerge the phone for no reason when or if you have it back from repair.

Further, do what Rekoil said. Heard from a few people that it works, but be sure to leave it in there long enough! Don't try to turn it on/charge it earlier.

This. If it's going crazy then there's water shorting something. You're likely to end up with corroded components (and premature failure) if you don't get it professionally repaired.

[Q] Htc One Water Damage (Not turning on) URGENT

Hi Guys,
So last night I accidentally put my phone in a glass of water. Only the lower part of the was phone submerged under water ( the charging port and lower speakers) not more than 10 seconds. As i was driving then i forgot to switch off the phone and when i reached home after a couple of minutes, i dried the whole phone using tissues. The main blunder i created was that i didnt switch off the phone and used it for 15 minutes , tested out its speakers and stuff. After some time, the phone showed low battery and i started charging it and in a couple of minutes it turned off. It wasnt charging at all. Also i dried my phone using hair dryer for 5 minutes. Then i put the phone in uncooked rice for the whole night and the next morning i tried to switch it on but no success. But when i tried to charge it a dark red light started blinking and later the charging light started but when i switched on the phone , after the htc logo appeared the phone switched off again. From now i am not able to even charge it , no light comes , i think the phones dead now.
Also when i checked the liquid damage indicator, it hasnt turned red which it is supposed to if your phone is damaged my liquid.
So can i know that what should i do now? I am still under the HTC one year warranty but i dont know whether they will repair my phone or not?
Leave it in the rice for a few days and hope for the best. I would have left it in there longer before trying to turn it on. Damage may be done.....

Well alcohol displaces water.... but I'm talking like 90% alcohol. Whiskey is 40% alcohol and 60% water(this varies of course), but in the an electrical circuit being wet in the presence of an electromagnetic field(in your case your phone being turned on having a whiskey/water mix in the circuit), the copper ions in on the board actually start to branch out and cause micro short circuits on the electrical boards. Long story short, if your phone is not working now, the damage is most likely already done.

I don't believe what anyone says about rice, rubbing alcohol etc any more after having my old i9300 at ten-twelve meters deep in highly oxygenated salt water for 22hrs (long story :-\ ) and being able to resurrect it after a day of pulling it to pieces (pcbs and all) and washing the corrosion off with just water and a toothbrush the HTC one is the replacement phone I ordered straight after assuming that the i9300 was surely dead lol... So I'd recommend watching some tutorials on pulling it to pieces without damaging the components, cleaning everything inside with just water and a toothbrush and drying with a hairdryer (whilst still in pieces) before reassembling. I bet that it'll work without any problems, just make sure to carefully study the tutorials
Edit: this disassembly video looks pretty good, I only watched a few minutes into it but the guy seems straight to the point. Definitely worth a look http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cyrxa23OwME

Dude you really have to stop turning your phone on! Just leave it in there for a couple days. Dont plug it in, don't even touch it. Just leave it for 3-4 days. If it doesn't turn on after that, I think its time for a new phone.

Lol yea, I don't know why would he turn it on without giving it chance to dry up. Even wet clothes take atleast one day to dry up without heat or dryer. Cheesus. And on top of it you put it up on charge. Lmao, I am sorry but I couldn't control my laugh.
But on serious note leave it alone for few days.

I gave up hope on the OP after I read 3 "I tried charging it"s.
How hard is it to understand that passing current through a wet device is bad?

Actually i tried to charge it 30 mins after it got wet. Then again the next day after 12 hours. Now from the past 3 days most of the time its in rice. Yesterday i kept it on charging and after an hour, a battery icon was visible on the screen and the led light was blinking orange. Then someone advised me to stop it and keep the phone in rice for more time.
What should i be doing now? Is there any hope left?
Your impatience has killed your phone. You should have let it dry before having electricity move at all through your phone. The water has short circuited that high current of electricity when you tried charging it and has most likely corrupted a lot of the hardware inside your phone.

Also are there any additional water indicators besides the one in the camera flash which is still yellow?

You probably killed the battery and the board, if you want to still try something else, replace the battery and see if it powers up.

Yes there are water indicators in the phone itself. You cant see them, but they're there. (If you look closely in a disassembly video, you can see it.)
If you want my opinion on this whole thing, just give up. You're phone is dead. Give it to HTC and pay for the repair. I think it's around $150.
