So 4.3 comes, how about BL unlock? - Xperia Z1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Can anyone conform 4.3 fix the BL unlock camera issue, or Sony will make us still wait the fix?
Also if this fixed will Sony give Z1 AOSP support like ZU just before?

FFS, give me a chance, my phone is still updating.
However the sony website still DOES NOT list the Z1 on its supported devices. So I suspect its not fixed

Thanks, if this haven't been fix maybe I think I have to stick official a little more longer, but miss the freedom of the AOSP Roms.

Even if it is fixed with this firmware drop it will still require integration into the AOSP projects. Have a little patience champion, we'll know soon enough.

But at least people will come, or the dev section will be almost dead like now. And the device I came also have the same problem, like HTC's BL lock, the things Dev can't mange will lead devices almost dead or take time and the result is next gernretion come, your devices haven't AOSP yet.
Another way, I'm not complain something, just want to see more people in Dev section discuss how to deal with problem/not working, not the eta/will something take Dev lot of time but will finally solve by xxxx official fix or others.

Fixed

I really don't see how unlocking BL would affect image quality... I mean the problem previously was that unlocking BL would remove DRM, thus you couldn't even open the camera app, no?

It's thought that the BIONZ chip emulation would no longer work.

Its usable HOWEVER the image quality is nothing compared to the original quality before bootloader unlock.

[Q] Knock on feature from G2 on Z1??

Is there any way that we can get this feature from the G2 on the Z1? Basically what it does is when your screen is off you knock twice on the screen and it turns on/off.

I believe it requires kernel level changes. Unfortunately due to the camera breaking upon bootloader unlock there hasn't been a whole lot of custom kernel or AOSP ROM development. Once Sony fixes the bootloader issue I would expect more kernels coming out and wouldn't be surprised to see one with this feature.
Can't wait
Edit: the closest I've seen is a mod to allow the camera button to unlock the screen. Is on this forum somewhere, though definitely not as cool as the double screen tap

Good point. There are. I downloaded ProximityScreen Off Lite yesterday and one more I forget the name of but haven't tested it at all yet. Might work, but will drain battery if you use the screen on function because I think it will need to keep a wakelock

Unlocking bootloader disadvantage?

I have searched and asked this many times. But no one seems to have a answer for me. So let's see if someone on the Q & A thread will...
I have a Z1 that can be boot loader unlocked. However I don't know whether its worth it.
The biggest thing to put me off was loss of x reality but there is a solution now.
The biggest thing that is putting me off is camera performance. I heard it removes Sony software for the camera called BIONZ. I want to know if anyone can tell the difference in camera quality with their unlocked boot loader as opposed to a locked boot loader.
So any answers appreciated!

Well there is a thread somewhere around here called another Sony secret and they are talking about the difference between pictures with an unlocked bl and pictures with a locked bl...the op said that there is a lot more noise in the pictures with an unlocked bl...look for that thread and you will find more info

Well I have mentioned this earlier.
This has had no negative effect on mine. I saw a camera improvement overall in .290, but other than that I have not been very satisfied with 4.3.
.257 had way less issues (talking about firmware as a whole here). Fingers crossed for kitkat:fingers-crossed:
So what I'm saying is, weird that I can percieve better results going from locked .257 - to unlocked .290.
I've read around that mentioned thread, and to me there was heavy speculation going on in there.

Unlock bootloader and try, if you don't like it just restore your TA and you are back again...
Just be sure you are on 4.3 because of camera...
I was always unlocking bootloader but I bought Z1 (in purpose) with bootloader status - NO.
I'm completely satisfied with Sony ROMs ( back from 4.1.2) and can't find any reason to use custom kernel...
Just don't need that...
OC? Really don't need more cpu or gpu speed.
All other features are already in stock kernel...
Maybe, only, if Sony decide not to add KNOCKON feature- I would miss custom kernel - but who cares for just one thing...

Reason why I am tempted it because I run ihackers ROM 3.0 and I liked the changelogs of ihackers kernel. such as noise reduction in camera and loads of tweaks and build prop tweaks.
Be aware that by unlocking formally sony's guarantee will be lost, as that is stated in their terms. I don't know if relocking will fix the guarantee issue of there is a need later on.
Sent from my C6903 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
I saw somewhere on XDA a thread about differences quality pictures between Locked and Unlocked Bootloader and the pictures on Unlocked Bootloader had much more less quality and more noise than the one with the Locked Bootloader. I can't guarantee the accuracy of that information but if it is true then Unlocking Bootlader is very bad for the quality pictures. I am sure it can be fixed because of software related but how and when I don't know. I still keep my Bootloader Locked even if I am tempt to unlock it to install CM11.

To me it is bad as there is a slight difference in quality then it not work properly, if not at all. We need concrete facts of what Unlock Bootloader damage on our phones and what, how the features still working. That what I didn't figure out yet.
I already unlock for a while to try doomlord kernel, x-reality i can't figure out there is different but camera is bad when unlock bootloader condition especially in low light, there is lot of noise , after relock i test in the same place and light and i can completely sure that bionz work on locked bootloader

Ive actually explained this before so i wont do that again. But here comes a theory why ppl belive the features aint working.
The cam stopped to work completley pre 4.3 right ? Ye back then the Bionz was affected hence the camera didnt work with unlocked bootloader. The camera itself cant work if the Bionz chip aint there. Google for image processing chips for cameras in general and find out what it is.
Although, Sony fixed theese issues with KitKat and here it comes, brace yourself. If you google this you will get ALOT of answers about it. Everyone suffered from bad quality photos since KitKat was introduced(even the normal users that never fiddles with their phones). So, NO it aint the unlocking of the bootloader that does it. Sony fixed all thoose problems ppl were having with unlocked bootloaders. It is the new software that does it. Media reviewers actually wrote about this aswell saying that Sonys cam wasnt any good no more. Google is your friend.
A bonus theory here: The "conspiracy theory" : Wouldnt it be smart to make some features look abit worse on the Z1 when the release of the Z2 is just around the corner ? If a customer wants a really good camera phone and just cares about that. And when he is comparing the Z1 with the Z2 and found that Z1 is just as good camera wise but half the price he would buy that one i would guess. Buuuut if you make sure the camera isnt working as good on the Z1 but super good on the Z2 while releasing the Z2. Then that consumer might buy the Z2 instead. It could very well be marketing stunts so the normal user would go "ehhh this Z1 aint working properly, ahh well ill just buy a new one like the Z2".
And ofc, when the Z2 has been out for a while the software will be fixed on the Z1 making the ones that didnt jump the train for Z2 happy again so that thoose might continue to buy Sony Xperia´s.
All big companies wanna make money. They have smart ways of doing so aswell.
I will buy a OnePlus One when that is released here, and if that is so good as it seems to be and that the company will continue to produce "flagship killers" to the half price and a more humane price. I will continue to support them instead. But usually everyone making money will get greedy.

OEM unlock on Android Q

I've been waiting for Android 10 release to see if it decreases the features you lose after unlocking the bootloader ( like Pie did) but I can't find anyone to confirm that for me. Anyone of you people can maybe help me clear things up? What features are lost to bootloader unlock under Q?
I unlocked the bootloader on Android Q and after three weeks of use I did not notice that anything stopped working. The only difference is that after turning on the phone appears "your device software can't be checked for corruption, please lock the bootloadera". So , in my opinion, nothing changed.

What about video image enhancement or audio settings (DSEE HX, ClearAudio+)? From what I know, those are locked with drm keys and unlocking the bootloader turns those features off. Can you please check that?

Bootloader unlock & rooting

So clearly this is still very early days given the phone is barely released yet but this is my first Sony Xperia device and just wanna check if the following will be possible when I receive it...
1) use this website to unlock the bootloader https://developer.sony.com/develop/open-devices/get-started/unlock-bootloader/
2) extract the boot img
3) patch the boot img with magisk and flash
Thanks in advance
Ah just found this site too

Thanks for the heads up, that's interesting and a little concerning! Hmm I guess we'll see how it goes...
Hmm seems perhaps losing such functionality could be avoided...
The link is not posting for some reason but Google "How to Backup and Restore Sony Xperia Z+ DRM Keys and Keep DRM Functionality after Root", perhaps this method could work
I've emailed Sony via the developers website whether unlocking the bootloader will result in losing camera features. Will post back here if/when they reply.
It'd be great to know, as if I get my device next Thurs I would love to get it rooted for substratum theming, ad blocking, edxposed etc
Here is Sony's response. Seems its gonna take a brave person to try this out! I think I'll likely just enjoy the device stock for a short while to get a feel for it and then see if unlocking is gonna be an option, as I wouldn't want to lose features but also I don't want a rootless android....
Perhaps the backup TA partition option (and the DRM keys) is the answer, but I don't know enough....
Not worth it in my opinion but to each his/her own.

This is great! Has there been any detrimental effect at all? I mean obviously unlocking can pose some risks but indeed so long as nothing breaks or I won't lose any of the great capabilities I'm buying this phone for, then I'll likely just root soon after receiving it ?
Here is a thought, why not first try the phone in stock ?
I mean i was all for unlocking in the past, hell i even created custom roms.
But that was the time that we could actually add new features to the phone.

Oh definitely, that'll be what I'll do initially. I'll spend a day or 2 (patience permitting) just completely out of the box fresh and untouched, the way its intended to get that feel for the device. It'll be my first Sony so I wanna see how it runs. Curious also if the advertised motion blur reduction runs well, in comparison to the 90hz I'm used to. I wanna see how the battery life holds up to my usage and I definitely wanna get used to the pro mode camera etc.
Then, I'll enjoy rooting (which by then perhaps others are posting their experiences too) for all the benefits that brings. Plus then there's custom rom support in the works too.
Oh I just love that new device feeling!

Only detrimental effect to the camera for the Xperia 1 was letting Sony write the software for it.
You'd lose the DRM keys so you'll lose the video enhancement, sound enhancement, widevine keys for watching stuff in HD and above in certain apps like Netflix.
Unlocking isn't really worth it in my opinion when software is pretty much stock Android with the DRM stuff.

If I remember right it was the DSEE for upscaling audio to HD that was lost.
If you get the phone to focus on media then keep i'd keep it locked to be on the safe side. Let others unlock it first then see what they say.

Apologies if this is a total newbie question, but do I have to unlock the bootloader to flash official firmware too? I'm getting the phone from O2 in the UK and wanted to flash EE or generic EU firmware to unlock WiFi calling.
