I've been hearing arguments from both sides. Anyone have any official information?
Corning's Gorilla Glass website only lists the TF700
Also on the Asus website only the TF700 has Gorilla Glass under its specs
However, plenty of third-party sources, reviewers, etc are claiming it's Gorilla Glass.
Anyone know for sure? I mean, I don't see why they wouldn't continue using it.

I think, more importantly, where has someone read that it IS made with Gorilla Glass? If Asus specs DON'T claim it and Corning website does NOT claim it, I'm more inclined to believe it does not use Gorilla Glass. When I bought mine from Amazon, there was nowhere in the description that claimed the TF701 uses Gorilla Glass. I believe there is also a post from ipdunwell where he takes apart the TF701 and for whatever reason reported NOT Gorilla Glass. See the original post in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2564143 Possibly, not using Gorilla Glass was one of the things that allowed them to sell the 701 for barely more than the 700 is currently selling.

Yes, but that's a reseller. And I've seen other resellers that claim gorilla glass as well, but none of them are actually Asus or Corning. I would think, were it Gorilla Glass, Asus would advertise that fact like they did with the TF700. There's also this post on another forum that lists all the "downgrades" from the 700 to the 701: http://www.transformerforums.com/forum/transformer-pad-tf701t-tegra-4-general-discussion/39453-my-quick-tf701-64gb-review-vs-nexus-10-a-2.html I'm thinking Asus may have originally intended to use Gorilla Glass but then didn't and the resellers are going off specs they were sent before the final release of the product. I honestly don't think we have Gorilla Glass on the TF701 - I wish I was wrong but I don't think I am. We need official word from Asus.
It seems ridiculous to update/refresh a model yet remove key aspects like LED flash and Gorilla Glass..
I'm still happy with my purchase but it seems like were getting jipped.

Well I replied to that remark because gorillaglasss 2 or 3 can bend like plastic and looks like it, but next to that not forget that the digitizer (plastic layer) is also attached to the glass so it can very well look like plastic but the screen isn't.
It is gorillaglass 2 or 3.
Will post exact details this evening.
also more and detailed pictures for the teardown will follow.
I have one bricked and one working device.
I'm actually up to more useful stuff than just taking pictures, but that's sort of ot.
ASUS suport chat says NO on GorillaGlass
Mark W.Hello Aaroneious, thank you for contacting ASUS support. Please give me a few moments to review your information. I will be with you shortly.
Hello Aaroneious, how may i assist you toady?
Aaroneious I want to find out if the TF701t uses gorilla glass. And if so, where online can I see that verified.
Mark W.OK after checking i am not seeing a indication that it uses gorilla glass.
Aaroneious Yeah, that's the thing. People on XDA forum are thinking it DOES have gorilla glass, but I'm not seeing anything other than from some resellers and early reviewers that it does.
Mark W.Ok it doesnt show that on our system or on our specs page for the tablet - http://www.asus.com/…mer_Pad_TF701T/#specifications
Aaroneious Is there anyway you can tell me absolutely one way or the other that it does or doesn't?
Mark W.After doing multiple checks there is nothing that is showing it has gorilla glass so i am not sure why XDA says otherwise.
Aaroneious Not XDA officially, just people going by what they see from some resellers and reviewers online. I think, because the TF700 DID use gorilla glass people are assuming teh 701 does too.
But apparently not.
my findings
I completed 3 tests today:
scalpel on the tf101: I couldn't get a scratch.
scalpel on the galaxy nexus (that had a sh*tload of scratches already): I couldn't scratch it
scalpel on the tf701: I couldn't scratch it
Conclusion: I cannot tell if or which gorilla glass it is, but on the WW it certainly is glass, and it's scratch resistant. However, I know that gorilla glass can be scratched by hurling it down the road, and also with sand grains on fingertips

The Galaxy Nexus doesn't use Gorilla Glass.. but I guess it's strong enough haha
Also pretty much any glass will get scratched by rocks/sand since they're much harder materials

So I am planning on buying this magnificent phone but did some thinking while i was showering. Got all these text messages and tempted to text back in the shower. Since the Xperia Z is nearly made out of glass materials; according to Sony viet, I've been wondering is the same thing going to happen to the Xperia Z like the Nexus 4?
For those who already owns the Xperia Z:
It would be a huge problem for those who will have to do imports from another country. How durable are these glass? It can survive heights but how about sudden temperature change?
and one more question, there's no point applying screen protectors if you plan on getting the phone wet right?
As far as I know the Xperia Z's glass should be a bit more durable than the Nexus 4's, but until it hits the market in more countries we won't really know. I'd be surprised if the glass would crack because of temperature changes though.
Applying an extra screenprotector on top of the shatter-proof sheet shouldn't be a problem. It might loosen faster if it gets wet but I don't think you'll notice much difference.
The only difference between them is that Nexus uses Gorilla Glass, and Sony uses tempered glass. As great as Gorilla Glass is, it's hardened properties don't make it temperature resistant. The process of glass tempering, in theory, makes it resistant to sudden temperature changes - they use the same technology to make glass for ovens etc. So I think it shouldn't happen with Xperia, but we'll never know unless somebody takes time and money to make a test.
Screen protectors shouldn't be bothered by water. If they're static, then they'll stay on. Those that use glue might start to peel off after a while.

well according to that link, the back glass of the Z is made out of Gorilla glass, and the front is made out of Dragontrail.
I forgot where i read it from, some Sony employee stated that the front and the back uses the same glass. >_____>
Accordingly the glass front of the Xperia Z Dragontrail glasses of Japanese with tremendous strength capacity of about 60kg or sharp objects directly on the screen. On the back of a click-toughened Gorilla Glass scratch-resistant and finally the other components of the body using Polycarbonate material and fiberglass (glass fiber polymer) normal 300 times more durable plastic.

Why would they have gorilla on the back and dragontrail on the front though?
Isn't Nexus 4 gorilla on the back or is that some kind of weaker glass? (Was thinking about the crackings due to sudden changes in temp)

No idea. Heard that Nexus 4's back is not gorilla glass though. Also, Nexus 4 wasn't the first phone to use glass back, and this problem seems to be bugging mostly Nexus 4 users ( not often found in any other brand ) so maybe it's some kind of LG specific defect.

I have a faint memory about the back not being gorilla on nexus 4 and now that you mention it i haven't hear anything about other phones with cracks (except iphones but they're meant to break just by looking at it..)
I have spoken to a Sony Rep and apparently Sony uses Gorilla Glass 2 as well as DragonTrail. Devices will come with either one installed. (you might have the front panel made of GG2 and back from DT) and consumers will not have a choice of the glass used. The back panel of the phone has an additional layer on the glass which provides some glare effect (so that could be the layer that is being scratched and not the actual glass). On the front there will be a screen protector preinstalled.
Users will not have an option to select the glass used in their phone, so we will either have GG2 or DT on the front and either GG2 or DT on the back. I think that this should also clarify the on going debate about which glass is used in Xperia Z.
Omg that's so bad. Might have to hold back on this one.
I still don't understand why Sony would do such a thing. Wouldn't it be easier for them to use both DT? Or are they cheaping out on the glass?
May I ask which sony you asked? Europe? Hong Kong?

I am from Poland and I spoke to official Sony rep. I got his number from a Sony Store in Poznan, Poland after I asked them if I could do a scratch test on their display device in store
Sv: [Q] Xperia Z Dragontrail, Gorilla Glass, Polycarbonate, glass fiber
I was concerned about the glass on the Nexus 4 until I dropped it once and then a couple more times... so far it is intact... in my opinion Sony has far bettef manufacturing than LG but will see what happens. Phonewise I am not impressed by the Nexus 4 but for tha price you cannot complain ...

I don't think you can use two types of glass like that, with one device getting one or another... XZ wouldn't be certified for release ( by the likes of FCC etc ) if that were true. You need to provide one, particular specification for each device to be allowed to even release it on the market. You could file a class law suit for selling randomly inferior devices as the same model and for the same price - Sony certainly wouldn't do that. There might be some regional differences, but it's certainly not GG or DT at random. I think they might have made a mistake or didn't know this at all.

Why would the FCC give a crap what glass is used? They are a communications regulator not a design regulator.
It is highly unlikely that the glass would cause communication issues, or interference with other electronics
Title says it all, which glass is Sony using for it's XPERIA Z's back and front? Corning Gorilla Glass, Dragontrail, unknown manufacturer? I've seen many articles and they all seem to say something different. Anyone with a definite answer? Thanks in advance.

No he can't since he doesn't work for Sony.
And even if he did, he would just have said that the phone uses tempered glass aka we will never? get an answer why they used different kinds of glass, we can only speculate.
Maybe one glass if better to swipe (aka touch screen) and the other has more grip??? Pure speculations:silly:

It doesn't make sense to me either. Maybe Dragontrail is very expensive and they decided to protect the screen with it ? Have no idea mate but that's what Sony confirmed on their Hong Kong press conference.
Before I got my Xperia Z I have spoken to the official Sony rep in Poland. I have asked him a lot of questions about the glass that they use on the phone. The way he explained it is that Sony has many different suppliers. The glass is supplied by either Corning (Gorrila Glass 2) and whoever makes DragonTrail. Noone will be able to tell you which glass is on your device as it can be either. You could have GG2 on front and back, DT on front and back or a mix of the 2.
Either way both glass types are tempered glass. On top of that the back of the phone has a antiglare layer on it, so if you try to do a scratch test on that glass you will take the layer off.
Hope that clarifies everything.
Really what difference does it make what glass they use? They are shatter resistant like most other phones glass screens.
There is obviously a reason they choose two different types, again it doesn't really matter, it just works.

So read/search the forums instead of creating yet another thread of the same questions, already answered so many times.
why are any of you so sure it is Dragontrail or Gorilla glas Sony are using ? they never said anything about what glass type it is... only describe it as mineral glass
All you need to care about is that the glass is strengthened in the phone, and has a layer to assist in the phones resistance to shattering. You are getting a flagship phone with high specs for your cash.
Really who cares in reality, Do any of you ask which saftey glass is in your car windscreen. If you do, then seriously get a life.

I think a more accurate representation of it would be that it's been made software but less shatter prone, as people in general would take a scratch over a crack. I don't know what they've done with v3.
I ordered one
I ordered the Spigen screen guard .... Just wanted 2 make sure since there is an additional care when you dont want to get your first scratch!
Since it's nearly impossible to replace the screen a screen protector would be a good idea. Better safe than sorry.
The HTC One X was the first phone that I didn't use a screen protector on. It never had a scratch on it and I think it also used gorilla glass 2. I couldn't find any screen protectors in the mall for the One yet so I bought an iPad Mini screen protector and cut it to size. It looks pretty crappy lol. I was hoping that I could use the One without a SP but I'm afraid to ruin this beautiful screen.

I have a bad history with screen protectors since I suck at putting them on. I also absolutely hate cases, especially the chunky ones you see phones in today.
I used neoprene Nexus One pouches for my previous Android phones, but only when they were in my pocket or I was walking/running with them in my hand. Of course with the One's 4.7" screen that's not no longer an option. When I bought the phone on Wednesday I declined the Tmo employee's recommendations for cases and/or screen covers. However, while walking back to my car and examining the beautiful screen I changed my mind and went back to get a screen protector (which the Tmo guy applied nearly perfectly) for $25.
Interestingly I stopped using my pouch altogether for my Amaze over the last month or so and not a single scratch/marking has appeared on the screen or anywhere else.
If you are worried about very light scratches, I would recommend a screen protector.

I touch on this in my 'Guide: Perfect Screen Protector Install' post, but let me summarize.
Though the advent of Gorilla Glass (and other similar products that are based on the same or similar compositions but don't have a cool name) help reduce the severity or probability of scratches or shatters, the key word is 'reduce', not "eliminate".
I have, on many occasions, dropped my phone face down. Had it not been for the 3M Vikuiti on my Inspire, I have no doubt I'd have a chip or other blemish on the screen. If you've ever seen (or known of) a car that had a chip in the windshield, you'll know it never gets better, and can with the right conditions, bloom into a full-out crack.
Right now I have the Spigen/SGP crystal on my One for the same reason. For fifteen bucks, is it really worth taking a risk? We're talking about a $600 phone, folks. Just because you've been subsidized by your carrier and only came out of pocket for $200 doesn't mean it will cost any less to replace it.
Just sayin'. YMMV.
Because of the sides of the screen being curved, many glass screen protectors on the market don't address this and are flawed. I'm going to keep a list of the ones that I have tried and will keep updating the thread with any progress. As the title reads this is for the tempered glass screen protector, not film, not 'flexible glass.' Tempered glass is the only I use.
Tried:
EzGuardz
Edges did not adhere.
Ghostek
A bit wider than the EzGuardz, covers more of the glass, and cutouts are better...but edges don't adhere once again.
I suspect the reason why none of these adhere is because they haven't addressed the fact that the edges of the screen are curved downward. They can easily fix this by have the edges of the screen protector end where the glass begins to curve.
All these are on my Moto Maxx which is equivalent to the Droid Turbo.
If anyone orders other ones please feel free to chime in and I'll update the first thread with the info.
So, EZGuard also does not adhere to the edges of the screen.
Other than that is pretty good.
Feels like it has some kind of oleophobic coating.
With a Gorilla Glass screen, and a 1 use free screen replacement from Verizon, are screen protectors really needed?

Gorilla glass does not equal scratch resistant, I work in the mobile industry and every one of our demo phones have scratches on it, also it definitely doesn't mean it's shatter resistant. The screen replacement applies to the droid turbo if you have Verizon, a good number of people are using it outside of Verizon's network. And I personally have the moto maxx so again, doesn't apply. I've had screen protectors on every one of my phone's that were touch screen.

Gorilla glass does not equal scratch resistant, I work in the mobile industry and every one of our demo phones have scratches on it, also it definitely doesn't mean it's shatter resistant.

Wow, I've been using Phones with Gorilla Glass since I moved to Verizon with the D1 and never scratched the screen, but I also never carry it in the same pocket as my keys. To each their own, my wife has used glass screen protectors sold to her by the rep and the one time the protector shattered, when they removed the protector at Verizon they scratched the screen removing the shattered glass. Of course a new protector and she never noticed.

From my understanding, yes they replace the glass, but not the digitizer. I like the added protection

The digitizer isn't built into the screen? Huh always kinda figured they were.
I've had people come in saying the same as you, but they never look closely until it's pointed out. I bet you there are hair line scratches on the screen. Anything from bits of sand to fibers that are just the right hardness will leave a mark on the glass
But if these people don't notice then who cares?
But they notice after its been pointed out, which in turn they always get a screen protector. A small scratch may not appear to be much but it still reduces the integrity of the screen. Besides a $10-$20 screen protector which protecting a $200 screen... You do the math.
Got the mime in a week or so ago went on nice, though it was defective, tried contacting them for a replacement. Customer service is non existent so beware

I'm looking at getting the MIME screen protector as well, since it seems to be getting the best reviews. What was defective about it?

There was a white spot on the top near headset and parts of the edges (on all 4 edges) didn't stick, small enough to call them 'slivers' of bad adhesive.

Thanks for the heads up. I ordered the screen protector yesterday and hopefully all is well with the installation
Looking into a glass screen protector as well.
Got any recommendations?
Just installed a Mimeusa tempered glass today, was a-bit disappointed. Maybe it's part of a bad batch but the edges and camera cutout are not adhering evenly. Its very noticable towards the bottom, lifting between the home a back button.
Ordered Mimeusa before for my Oneplus one and it installed great. Hopefully I can get an answer from customer service.

That's unfortunate news. I have the same glass screen protector for two months now and haven had any edge start to lift. Upon installation and until now. I work in construction which my phone is always surrounded my dust.
Cracked my iVoler, so today I installed a BodyGuardz tempered glass for the LG G3 Vigor (G3 Mini)... Perfect fit, and it's guaranteed for life, so if it cracks, they replace it. Just an FYI.

Yep! It follows the screen edges exactly, coming right out to the rounded edges of the screen. The cutout for camera and sensors is spot-on, as well. It's a match. I should note that I have the exact same areas (at the very top of the screen, and a small spot at the bottom, between the home & back buttons) that don't want to adhere as I did with the iVoler. It's apparently got more to do with my screen than the protector that's on it. Anyway, these BodyGuardz are available at your AT&T store, and probably elsewhere as well, and the warranty on them is a big plus compared to an Amazon-purchased iVoler that might take 3-4 weeks to arrive from Shengzhen.
So are there any glass protectors that adhere to the edges?
Can not find any protection information in display section.
Hello
If you google a bit you will read the that a Huawei spokesperson stated[1] "For screen protection, we have used premium materials such as Gorilla Glass 5 and include a screen protector as part of the integrated product."

Your link does not talk about the P20 Pro
There is a screen protector on from the factory I noticed. Has anyone taken theirs off? I feel like it's interfering with the interface making it less responsive but know as soon as I take it off it'll never go back on the same!
Just took my screen protector off, feels way better the figer print button is flush everything feels more premium, no scratches yet
Gorilla glass or no, I wouldn't drop it. Can't rely on any phone glass to survive unless the frame of the phone gives it some protection. Most modern phones are like Icicles and shatter when you look at them.
I dropped mine from above my head while taking a picture at a gig and there's no damage at all.

Gorilla glass confirmed
I have had written confirmation from Huawei support that they use Gorilla glass 5 in the P20 pro.

I took mine off by accident since I thought it was an extra layer of packaging protection. First time I've ever bought a phone that came with a screen protector pre-applied. Moving my fingers across the screen definitely feels a lot smoother without it, which is also the main reason I've never used screen protectors in the past (that and not being able to put them on without getting bubbles below them the couple of times I've tried).
I think I'll leave it without any additional protection, I've only dropped phone two or three times in my life. Though they did actually crack on those occasions.
I think I mentioned this somewhere else, but I cracked my P20's screen. It's not fatal, just a hairline crack cutting off the top left corner. I still don't really know how it happened. I haven't dropped the phone. I think it is possible that I scratched it and then the scratch turned into a crack. Anyway, I don't think a screen protector would have saved it, as screen protectors are pretty much redundant on gorliia glass phones. Whatever scratched it (a stone I guess) was strong enough to damage the glass so would have probably cut straight through the plastic protector.
It doesn't have gorilla glass, but it does have some protection.

Its the same material used in gorilla glass though.
Lol the tweet basically confirms that there is no scratch protection whatsoever. Its a shame Huawei tried to save costs on such high end and expensive phone. (view 10 is the same. Why they do this is beyond me.)

But Gorilla glass is alumino silicate glass?

Well, that's just part of the equation. View 10 also has a "just as good" glass, according to Huawei, but scratches on every occasion. Bottom line is, Huawei tried to cheap out on the protector (again), which is shameful. Bought a Mate 10 Pro, was thinking about selling the P10 Plus we have and buying a P20 Plus, but ...thanks no.
Tbh trademarked names won't save you from breaking the screen.
I'd say glass in flagships is almost identical nowadays and if you drop it be prepared for the crack.
Feel free to remove the plastic screen protector and apply some a good quality glass one. That's what I am aiming for.
Screen with no protector can easily scratch from sand grains that might be in your pocket for example.

Corning's website shows that Huawei P20 Pro has Gorilla Glass 5.
Gorilla or not all screens are prone to smashing. I wouldn't carry a several hundred pound device in my pocket 24/7 without ample protection. I always use a decent case and glass screen protector. I highly recommend Spigen in both cases, very good quality and not expensive in comparison to others on the market.
People seem confused by Huawei's decision to cut costs in areas like this but I couldn't justify spending £800 on a such a device and wouldn't have a flagship device if they hadn't.
If you're clumsy, you're clumsy. Gorilla glass can't save you.
