Active Notifications lighting all pixels? - Moto X Q&A

strange quirk with active notifications.
1) notifications light up using select few pixels (GOOD)
2) notifications fade out and go away completely (GOOD)
3) all pixels light up very dim for a second (KINDA ODD)
You have to have the lights off in your room for you to notice it really.
Check it out...

Mine doesn't do that in a pitch black room.

call motorola, they might be able to get your a replacement, if you havent rooted and unlocked bootloader

oh man, seriously nobody else has this going on? its such a small bug and seems fixable.. i dont wanna send back my motooo!
gonna try n reset the phone to see what happens.. my expectations are near nil though.. anyone else with this strange issue?

Just tried in a pitch black room. Saw nothing after the active display time faded out.

The whole screen flickers gray right? I'm on a Rogers X. Mine does that.

Just for giggles, I checked out my phone and two coworkers phones and none of them do it. Two AT&T, one Verizon.

Yeah, I don't think that's normal. The whole reason Active Notifications doesn't annihilate your battery life is because only the pixels that need power, get power. That's how AMOLED works. You can turn off each individual pixel. Which is why you don't see something like Active Notifications on phones with an IPS panel such as the Nexus 5. IPS works by lighting a giant backlight, and the pixels act something like shutters, opening and closing as needed. Of course it's more technical than that, but in layman's terms, that's how you can think of it.
So yeah. Something's up. Those pixels should not be lighting up on an AMOLED display. If it were an IPS, that would be normal.

Two Rogers phones here, neither do that.(I am running 4.4 though)

My VZW MM doesn't do that. Seems strage, as it's a big selling point for the phone that it only lights the pixels you need.

i have the same problem, im on 4.2.2, i will take it to motorola

thanks for the explanation! cant wait for OLEDs to be ubiquitous.. wonder what comes after OLED, or is it the final frontier for active matrix

Since its a problem that only I would notice, and only in the darkest of rooms, I Dont want to go thru the hassle of explaining to the poor guys at the Rogers store why I want to exchange the phone. I'm wondering whether it may be a software related thing... What's the best way to reset the software besides deleting all data.. Is there a way to get down deeper and scrub it clean?

Well, it's most likely just a software bug in the Rogers 4.2 rom. As the others who are not on Rogers do not have this issue, your best bet is probably to upgrade to the T-Mobile 4.4 ROM, which is what I'm running (I'm also with Rogers).
EDIT: Just noticed someone had said that they had Rogers phones that didn't have the issue... I say proceed with caution. You can try reflashing the Rogers stock firmware from the internet, see if that clears it up?

I've had 4 Moto X's. They all did this. It doesn't impact battery enough for me to worry about it. It may be the backlight or something though I admit I know very little about how SAMOLED works.

I think is happening is that there's some code in there that's telling the transistors to discharge throughout the matrix instead (which explains why the whole screen is dim for a second) which helps with reducing the amount of wear on individual parts of the screen (the notification icons itself). If someone can compare the ActiveNotification between 4.2.2 and 4.4, that would be nice.

Screen Flicker - Does anyone NOT have this?

So I'm debating RMA's the N7 I have with Google Play. I have a slight screen raise (this doesn't bother me too much) as well as screen flicker that I notice in low lighting situations (mostly in chrome and maps).
Does anyone NOT have screen flicker? Or is this a software issue?

Hey, I believe the screen flicker is due to the auto brightness function of the device.
I personally don't like auto brightness at all, try turning it off in the brightness menu and see if you still get that.
I see the flicker quite often with devices having that function turned on.

Hmmmm well I guess the only thing I have to compare it to is my iPhone 4 which doesn't do this.
My eyes are usually sensitive enough to be annoyed by screen flicker in any respect. Certainly with overhead CFL lighting.
My 16GB Nexus 7 (2 days in my posession now) doe snot exhibit any sort of screen flicker whatsoever. This is in comparison side by side with my HTC Desire HD which also does not flicker.
The display actually has a very high quality feeling which I like.

Thanks for the feedback. So even in low lighting conditions, with auto brightness set to on, and scrolling around in chrome / maps, you screen never flickers or sort of rapidly dims?
I've noticed it. Only on white web pages or books. Very slight. I had two HTC One Xs that both had it. Its a Tegra issue and doubt we will see a fix. Gutted.
Its not the whole screen. Noticeable around text especially. Some weird refresh prob. Left side of my screen is also slightly raised. Not happy.

I definitely get it on the whole screen, maybe for a second or 2. Might do it 2-3 times per day at most.
double post - deleted
Happened to me, I just turned the auto brightness off and t was fine. Try it, it works.
I keep auto brightness disabled and I haven't noticed the flicker that I can remember but tonight I'll try to reproduce and check it both ways.
I disable auto brightness and use this app which is actually a widget. It allows you to UAW any edge on the screen as an invisible or barely visible slider for brightness. It allows for incremental 1% changes on a slider instead of the typical button/toggle widget and its always enabled if you set it that way which allows on the go ease of use no matter what app or screen is open.
Its helped me attain amazing battery life and always have quick access for setting it just right.

I understand that - I'm trying to gauge whether or not it affects ALL N7's, or is a defect.
Google Play is shipping me a replacement N7 to address the screen raise on my current one, and I want to make sure the replacement is 100% A-OK.

Make a poll if you're trying to do that.... But yes, I see flicker too, but only at very low backlight levels and seems to be when wifi is active. I haven't tested to see if it's just wifi, or wifi causing other things (disk activity, etc), but this is the general consensus so far in the other thread.

Does new moto x have notification led?

Love what I've read about this phone except for the crappy camera, small battery, and no external SD support. If it doesn't have a notification led I think I'm going with the GS5 as my current GS3 has treated me well for the last 2+ years. Anyone?
No. And maybe you should try something beside a Galaxy. You won't believe how fast and smooth stock Android is and when a phone isn't made of entirely cheap plastic.

With the Moto X you can do that and actually see from which app the notification is without touching it. And with just touching the screen one time, you can read the notification.

So from across the room or even a few feet away looking over (no hand wave over it or anything) at the moto x I can tell if I have notification(s)?
What I like about my GS3 is the color of the led tells me which app the notification is for and I can see it from across the room.
The active display will blink the icon of whatever app has a notification on the screen. It's not color coded like a normal led and you may have trouble seeing the icon from across the room. However, you can just say "OK Google: What's Up?" and the phone will say the time and read any active notification/text messages. (Incredibly useful while driving.)
It will probably have a hidden led like the original X, just hope the brightness can be tweaked this time.

It's only for a charging led. I think some cm roms have it worked out for a notification light, ONLY when it's plugged in. You lose the moto features with cm based roms tho.
I just went to Verizon and held the one m8 and old moto x. I'm not a fan of the feel of the m8 and the notification led is so small that it's pretty much useless. But I like that I can flash a pure android ROM (gpe) and it has other good specs.
I love how the old x feels, it's perfect. It sucks that Motorola is making it bigger as the smaller size would have been a big selling point for me.
Tough to decide between the two, or even the gs5.
2014 moto x does have a notification light
And it works for more than just charging
you can just yell, ok google now, news? and the moto x will tell you each notification you have without touch it.
It doesn't tell you everything but it tells you missed notifications

Maybe go look in the 2014 moto x thread and see what those who have one say. Besides you can see it in YouTube reviews
Have seen at least seven or eight YouTube hands on videos, none mentioned anything about a notification light. Will check the new X topic.
Notification LEDs are irritating to me and useless because they don't tell you if the notification is worth your time or not, so you just turn on the phone for nothing a lot. Active Display/Moto Display is pretty damn intuitive.

Well after using the X for two and a half months now I will have to disagree with you
I also at first really liked the Active display, still do, but I would take back the old LED notifications. I just hate to wait some 6 seconds for the notifications to appear on the screen. Also you will have to to look at the display from straight on, with LED notifications you can see it from most angle (not the hTC M series like stupid ultra tiny dot one!), and you can set the colour, so that's damn easy, for me.

Permanent red tint on screen

Hey guys,
I started noticing bit of red tint on lower half of the screen.
I am aware viewing angle make difference, but no matter which orientation/angle I look from it is still there.
Anyone else having similar issue?
Also, if this is a defect, is this the kind that retailer usually replace for consumer?
It is giving me headache looking at the screen for a prolonged period even though the tint is not severe.

Its very, very slight on mine. Nothing that would make me consider returning it though.
Also, screen tint shift based on angle is a lot more frequent than my s3 (i9300). I tilt note4 by even 5deg and I see colour shift already, but nothing like that on s3.
Can someone confirm this please.
Thank you.

Yes, my phone does this. However I've checked a lot of shop display units and have noticed many are better and some are worse than mine. The sad fact is that there seems to be a bit of a screen lottery going on and it's luck whether you get a good screen or a bad one.

Agree. My old s5 was much better with colour shift and tinting. As are the new tab s tablets. I'm disappointed with the note 4 screen.
Have you tried setting the display to photo mode?
I am still wondering if we talk about the same phone, my Note 4 has no red tint and no color shift at all, no matter how much I turn the phone.
Also looking at a totally white/red/yellow picture, I can't find any part of the screen that is warmer. Some people also reported that greys look terrible, I can't comfirm that for my display.
Coming from the Nexus 5, this display looks so much better in all aspects, I am still stunned after using the phone for 3 days now.
There seems to be quite a disparity between phones. Some are good, some are bad. That tends to be why people are having different experiences.

It was the norm for the S series up until the S4 came out. The S4 was the first Samsung screen since the Note 2 that had a very nice and even screen.
S1, S2, S3, Note 1, Note 3 all suffer from poor screen uniformity. Guess you can add the Note 4 to that too.
This worries me as I'm planning on skipping the Note 4 for the Nexus 6. Samsung will already be giving Motorola last years Amoled tech, and stretched across the bigger screen the unevenness will be even more obvious.
Especially now that Android Lollipop will be mostly light grey everywhere! Amoled's worst nightmare.

Wow, if you do not notice it - do not find a reason to notice it. Be happy with your device.
My display is a very slightly more blueish/pinkish towards the top half, specifically the top right. It's only noticeable on white content. It's subtle enough that I won't go through the hassle of getting a replacement especially since the replacement could be even worse... At least my display has been brightness and no banding or anything. Overall though, this display is simply phenomenal. Hopefully these slight display issues will improve as time goes on, although the screen on my S4 was very uniform, doesn't even come close to the performance of the Note 4 screen though.
Seems like the problems are much less pronounced that the typical uneven backlight of LCD?

[Q] Static lines & bands on screen. Yes, please help.

Guys,
I've tried 3 different phones from Flipkart. The first one had the famous yellow tint issue which was down to a minimum in the next 2 devices that i tried so I guess it all depends on luck. But as luck would have it or OCD , I had new issues with them.
Both the replacement devices that I have tried so far have these 2 issues below:
1. Weird horizontal bands visible across the screen on light backgrounds (white/grey) most prominent on low brightness. They really annoy you when scrolling through your Twitter feed or any apps with a white background (Most on Lollipop!)
Best way to check these are in the default android dialogs of WiFi password or language choice.
2. I see static lines horizontal lines on the screen everytime the screen is touched and they disappear after 2 seconds of the touch. Again easiest way to check this would be to open the gallery and pull in the hamburger menu from the left. When touched to pull, mine shows prominent static/disturbance sort of ripples.
Can you guys check and tell me if these are common issues since both my replacement devices have these & I am really not upto trying another device after all the hassle.
Thanks.
I'll see the horizontal lines as well on light backgrounds, I just assumed it's a side affect of amoled.
Perhaps the lcd is defective?

Can confirm that my screen also has the issue #1. I always thought it was probably a large AMOLED screen issue. Never faced issue #2 though. I also got mine from flipkart.
Issue 1 is what bothers me the most. Scrolling on white backgrounds is annoying, you feel these bands are not moving & look prominent.
Even more worried since everything's going white in Lollipop.

Though I dont have a similar problem but I am pretty annoyed with my purchase. My first device was replaced since it developed screen-burn within few days of usage. Surprisingly, the second device has also developed screen-burn after 10 days of usage and the nav keys are permanently embossed on the screen which can be clearly seen on grey backgrounds.
The strangest part I found about both the devices was they were turned on right out of the box One click to the power button and the phone was already in the setup mode asking to select a language. White color reproduction is way off on this device and looks pale yellow instead of white I somehow feel that I should have stuck with my Nexus 5 instead of falling for this. At-least for now, I'm done with AMOLED's
So have you returned the Moto X?
Motorola seems to have major QC issues. Distorted speaker, yellow tint, weird lines and burn-in.
It's a great phone but the screen has major issues. I am on the fence now about trying a 4th replacement device but worried it'll have more issue.

They are not there all the time. Only on light backgrounds. Best way I can describe it is if you've ever seen a plasma TV that gets horizontal purplish lines going vertically from a color source on an all white background. The horizontal lines on my phone follow the dark letters/images as I scroll up and down.
And I actually RMA'd the phone today because of it.

I had the dark horizontal bands on my replacement device they sent for the back separating. They were very prominent on light backgrounds and very distracting. I chose to keep my original device because the screen is perfect on it. I didn't want to take chances with replacements beyond that. I took pictures and notified Motorola of the issue.

Oh, I've been pretty unlucky so far in that case, haven't got a screen without these bands. Well atleast there is hope.
But there's the same concern, will the replacement be better or worse than the one you have. In India, we have to hand over the device at the same time, so cannot compare the two devices.

So, I have not heard a thing from moto about my RMA label. On the site it said I'd get an email in 4 business hours, well all day and nothing. I'll have to call tomorrow I guess.
Well... Moto has no record of my RMA and I lost the RMA number because I took a screen shot and the pic didn't sync before I blew my current phone clean. They tried my IMEI and SN and contact info, it's like it never happened. They said they could try looking at the RMA number, but, I don't have it. No confirmation email either at the time of entering it.
So, I'm not going to bother again right now as others have said the replacements do the same. I got the two year warranty, so if the screen does eventually go dead, oh well.
What I will warn others of, is to WRITE DOWN the RMA number!
My first device was perfect - but I returned due to a scratch on the wood back. Second device is half yellow, half white tint with horizontal lines. It's like playing the lottery because the qc is still awful on amoled. I wouldn't mind if the full screen was yellow even but the half and half is terrible. Yellow can be fixed with color tweaks and wasn't all that bothersome anyway.
I have one dark line across the screen. I chatted in with them and I have to call them and ask for the REST department since mine was a custom one.

I've seen this once or twice, it appears to be when the phone is on 2G and data is on 900Mhz LTE.
But I can't say it's very visible, I can barely make out a pixel or two vibrating in very specific settings.
What's your model number?
I have the XT1092.

Yep even I have the XT1092. I am trying to live with it for now. Have till Dec 10th to decide whether I want to risk another device.
The bands across the screen bother a lot more than the static lines. Hope Lollipop comes soon so I can make a final decision.

You should try to capture it on a video clip, my lines are just barely visible in low light.
Film it and send it back for warranty with that video as proof. And post it here, I'm curious to what it looks like.
I'm pretty sure it's the LTE radio, because I can just barely make out the noise in my computer speakers when it's pinging the GSM tower.
Much like when old phones use 2G mode, but at a way faster rate and not as loud.
You might have gotten phones from a batch where they forgot EMI shielding or something like that.

[Q] Want to buy nexus 6, are there still screen issues persisting?

Please help. I am planning to buy nexus 6. I have read a lot about nexus 6 display issues like burn in issues , uneven color, grey lines and lower half of screen freezing. Some say these are present in all devices to variable extent and in most exist in mild form.
Should i get nexus 6 ? does these screen issues still exist?
Else i will buy Galaxy s6

I've had mine since November 2014 and I have none of those issues.
Smooth sailing here
I keep it adaptive 66% brightness and its all good no burn-in that I can see I have noticed some specific apps like chrome cause a weird freeze on the right screen half happens maybe once a month with no pattern (a quick screen off/on fixes it could possibly be a custom kernel thing). Only other thing I'd say is the screen has a very warm color palette by default, I use code blue with kcal 237, 235, 255 to make a cooler feel, there's a thread about it somewhere. I've had mine since February.

The Galaxy S6 has lots more software issues then the N6 atm and besides that i have never personaly had this screen issue. The N6 is a great phone especialy now it is beeing discounted here and there (US and UK).
Been rocking N6 for last 1 month and i am loving it. No issues at all. Like u i was also very concerned to put into huge sum of money into N6 purchase after reading soooooo many discouraging videos and reviews and comments.
But i am using it as my daily driver for like 1 month now and i haven't seen any issue related to screen, battery, or even software. 5.1.1 is very stable.
I keep the adaptive brightness on and brightness level at 50% and i get 4 - 4.5 hours SOT with everything on...including google now, location history, location reporting high accuracy.
No screen burn, no battery swelling, no battery life issues, no screen freezes, bt yes i'll admit the screen colour is more on a warmer side.
I got a Nexus 6 from Google Play and a friend got one from Motorola in June 2015. Both have screen issues, one have vertical banding noticeable on gray or dark backgrounds, the other has a yellow tint and very uneven backlighting. I'm not sure if most have these issues and simply aren't bothered or what. Not sure what to do at this point.
Flawless here
No issues with mine ....
mine works fine never had any of the issues above
No issues for me.

There's no backlighting.
What I meant to say is that strips of the screen are brighter or darker than the rest of the screen and it looks blotchy. If I hadn't viewed a solid gray screen, I might not have noticed but this doesn't make me happy, especially knowing that Android M has a dark theme with lots of grays.
I've had my white 64gb from Motorola since March. Had it replaced once already for the screen tearing issue when running a custom dpi. The replacement I got a month ago does the same. Will be calling again soon

I got a nexus 6 at ATT through the next program a couple months ago. It had banding on the right side of the screen right out of the box. It was pretty discouraging. I took it back and got it swapped for another unit and honestly couldn't be happier. The n6 is an amazing phone.

Screen tearing or half black?
Issues relating to custom DPI happen on them all.
I received mine on 6/18, no issues other than a pink hue at low brightness (with adaptive brightness turned on) which seems to be software based.

Half black, and half freeze, which I've seen be referred to as screen tearing in just about all the posts I could find on it. Funny thing is on every kernel or ROM thread ice asked about it I've been told it does not happen on all of them. Seems many have had their phones replaced and had no issues in the replacement and that has led to people believing it's a hardware issue. Only other explanation I had seen was something about Franco saying it's a possible display driver issue. Sucks that I can't use Franco kernel at AOL because it becomes horrible

The tearing, which by that I mean freezing definitely seems to be a graphics card issue. The half-black if you change the DPI and rotate clockwise so buttons are on the bottom, afaik happens to them all. I think this is related to the GPU to, though I don';t think that is hardware issue. The tearing issue seems to manifest more when the device is warm/hot

The tearing is a graphics card software or hardware issue? I love this phone, but it's getting very frustrating. Especially since my RMA prices with Motorola turned out to be a series of clusterf*cks.
I'm running Chroma right now and with the included Franco it's unusable in both my phones at a lower dpi. Half screen freezes left and right within seconds of starting up. The reasons I initially believed it was software was that it only seems to happen in certain apps. Specifically ones that required a lot of scrolling, like XDA, Facebook, and chrome. But no one else in the thread seems to have the issue
The half black screen I figured had to be software because the soft buttons are still on the screen.
I just wish there was a solid answer so I could stop guessing

I've never had the tearing issue and not everyone has that one. The guys who have had an RMA have generally said that it had stopped the issue happening. Im not sure that has any link to DPI either. My suspician based on not really any evidence at all is that it is hardware related, since some have it and some do not.
The half black is definitely linked to DPI and there is no fix to that that I am aware. I just turn that rotation mode off so I can only go anti-clockwise.

The weird thing with me with the tearing is it only happens in certain situations and has been consistent across both devices I had. Certain kernels I get it, other ones I do not. Franco has been unusable for me on both. It has only happened at lower dpi. Never on stock. Send to be less frequent with interactive governors than ondemand or conservative
