Hey guys, sorry if this had been brought up before. I helped my dad order a moto x and we both are expecting he'll lose his unlimited data plan, but the interesting thing is on the moto x site and the order confirmation it says the following:
VEZVerizon Individual Keep Existing Plan
So I'm wondering if anyone has presented this to Verizon upon activation and successfully argued to keep their unlimited data plan?
Wishful thinking, I know

I'd guess you'll only find out on the first new bill. Why didnt you grab one on Cyber Monday or subsequent days? Then for sure wouldn't lose unlimited.

how did you purchase the device? did you buy it full retail or did you buy it as part of an upgrade? if you purchased it as an upgrade, you will for sure lose your unlimited data. if you bought it full retail, nothing about your services will change.
there are methods for using an alternate upgrade while keeping unlimited data that have been detailed all over this forum.
Yep, so long as you don't do it as part of your upgrade cycle from Verizon you should be good.
OTHO you effectively end up paying double for the phone then because the plan is priced as if you always use the upgrade as soon as possible.

Depends on your plan. I pay $75 a month after all taxes and fees for my unlimited data plan. Cheapest you can get now before taxes and fees is 80 bucks, and realistically I'd be on the $110 a month plan. I save over $400 yearly compared to what I would get if I took a subsidized phone that I would have to keep for 2 years. Don't even get me started on 'Edge'.

this kills me. no carrier has ever removed the subsidy from anyone's plan for paying off a device. all plans are (or were) priced to include the subsidy. if you're out of contract, you're still paying for that subsidy. if you pay full retail, you're still paying for the subsidy.
so yes, in effect, your plan is priced so that you take advantage of your "upgrade" every 2 years. but taking advantage of the subsidy does not mean you are effectively "paying double" for the device.
however, if you change plans so that you can keep using upgrades (remove unlimited), then yes, you are effectively paying more for the device. you would be better off paying full retail and keeping your old plan (with unlimited) than switching to the new share everything plans.

I assume you meant 'not taking advantage of the subsidy'? No, you're not paying double for the device, instead you're paying approximately as much more for the plan as you would have for another device.

You really can't make this statement in a general sense. It really depends on how much data you use.
If your phone is $100 after subsidy, but $580 without subsidy, you paid $480 'more' in order to keep your unlimited plan. $480 / 24 months is effectively an extra $20 / month that you wouldn't have had to spend if you didn't keep your unlimited plan. (Not to mention paying up front is much more painful then paying monthly)
Now, you're already spending $30 / month for the unlimited data plan, so thats $50 / month per phone. After the base price of $60 for 2GB it is $10 for each 2GB extra. Assuming 2 people on the plan they could get 10 GB for the same price. Each extra $50 per person can get you another 10 GB for the same price.
I'm not a light data user, and the most I've ever hit on my phone in a month is 8 GB, and thats with deliberately refusing to use wifi even when I could have. With wifi I could have negated almost all of that. On average I use under 1 GB per month.
Anyway, most people with more than 2 people on the plan could easily save money by switching to the share everything plan, its not anywhere near as simple as 'the unlimited plan is always better'.

I'm a new AT&T subscriber. When I signed up, I accidentally signed up for the $39.99 Media Max Unlimited. I'm not sure why I signed up for it, maybe it was required? Well, after making a call yesterday, the CS rep put me on the $29.99 Blackberry Unlimited plan. I don't do any sort of text messaging...maybe 5 a month if that, thus the reason for the change. Is the Blackberry plan ok? Am I going to get hit with a bunch of data charges at the end of this month? Is there a better plan?
Sorry for all the questions, but I'm new to all these AT&T plans (ex-Sprint customer here).
Thanks!
If you have a PDA you are supposed to be on the PDA plan, $39.99. Now that doesn't mean that you will get caught being on the wrong plan, I am amazed that with the Tilt you were able to get the phone rep to lower your plan. Do you have a Tilt or the Kaiser?
I may be wrong but I remember reading some fine print on this:
Mail in rebates, $100, you will not get these anymore if you do not stay with the $39.99 or higher data plan
Discount of $150 instant will be reduced with out the correct data plan. It will show up on your next bill.
If you are trying to save some cash and cut corners(bascially not follow correct policy) and risk losing money stick with what you have. If you want to be correct you need to have the $39.99 plan.
This is what I read, please correct me if I am wrong so I can change my plan.

Hmm. Thanks for the clarification. I'll have to wait and see. I have the Tilt, and I have a business discount with them (I had no rebates - $200 Company Discount, and a $400 Web Discount). I went back through the purchase screens (as if I were a new customer buying through my corporate discount page), and neither the plan she switched me from nor the one she switched me to exist. What's weird is, I don't even see the MediaNet Unlimited plan that was on my phone. All that's listed are business data plans (with multiple options under each section not listed below) :
DataConnect Add-On
PDA Enterprise with Cellular Video Add-On
PDA Enterprise Tethering Add-On
PDA Enterprise for BlackBerry Connect Add On
I guess I'll just have to wait and see what happens with my first bill.
if you have the $39.99 plan you qualify for the rebates even if you purchased your phone through the business section. So you can print them out and mail them in. There should be 2 $50 rebates.
I am not 100% on how the business plans work for you. I know for my I get a % off my bill but when they quote me rates they always use the full price and I don't see any discounts until I get my bill.

At $10 savings per month, I'll gamble and see if I can swing the 29.99 plan. An additional $100 off the price of the phone would sure be nice though!
i am sure you will be fine if you got them to switch it for you. Especially since you got the phone through business.
Just don't contact ATT for service or support, thats how mine got switched to the 40 dollar plan.

Actually it says:
"Requires activation on a PDA Personal Plan or a $39.99 or higher unlimited data rate plan plus an AT&T Voice Plan of $39.99 or higher"
So it can be a PDA Personal for $29.99 but it has a 20Mb per month limit.
look the easy fix is this...stay on the PDA connect plan until you get the notice from att that the rebate has been processed and is on its way back to you, then dump it. Problem solved

Hey Guys, what is the Big Deal, see at&t don't waste their time or money on tracking who is using what, at the time of rebate, I am not sure they even look it up in the computer, they will check what you sent them, the form etc and just quick look, upload it to their database and they will send you a check. as for Internet, don't even touch it, it is saving you 10 dollar a month, don't know if its any money, but if you are a finance person you would know its alot.

The rebate processing agencies and AT&T make money off people that don't qualify for the rebates. That's why they really do the due diligence on paperwork. I once had a rebate rejected because I switched plans, and the rebate was of course processed much later after I sent it in. Everyone should pay attention to the fine print when it comes to rebates.
I was scrounging by on the media net 5/mb w/ limited texting for 20/mo while using an Audiovox SMT5600. I upped to the $40/mo PDA plan the day before my Kaiser arrived. Sure, I'd like to pay less, but it is what it is and I want the service. I've got a laptop for tethering when needed too. I’m not locked in to my voice or data plan however and that's how I want to keep it.
Im still on media max`
Im still on my media max plan for 19.99 that I had with my last "smartphone" works just fine. have had that plan for about 2 months now. I also did not risk sending in for the rebates since that would cost me more in the future if i had to switch plans.
I was considering the G2 until of course all the rooting fiascos. But now that it has been permrooted for good, I'm considering picking one up. You can find one for 350ish on craigslist, so I'm thinking about it.
Anyone else?
No thank you. with gingerbread coming out soon. why would anyone not stick with the N1?
Honestly I think gingerbread is going to be a severe disappointment. I think it will be a bunch of bug fixes and maybe one or 2 features that most people won't care about. But that's another discussion.
The only thing keeping me away from the G2 is my uncertainty about a blinking notification. I know that the "ring" around the trackpad lights up, but if it works the same way that it does on stock nexus (meaning one blink in every 15 seconds), I'm gonna be really mad. Other than that I like the phone, I like the styling.
Well I will only be buying AWS nonbranded Tmobile phones like the Nexus so i can take advantage of $10 unlimited data. That $15 difference is $360 in savings over 2 years. G2 isnt worth the price hike for me.
For anyone on the $25 or $30 data, I would suggest getting on the $10 web2go asap before tmobile switches to the tiered plans. All you have to do is go into your account and change your device and pick any dumbphone. Then go into APN settings and put in internet2.voicestream.com
I have still yet to see a phone come out that makes me even consider getting rid of my nexus. Every day at work I have to help friends with less open android devices accomplish things that take mere seconds on this hacker-friendly handset. Sure, there are some phones with slightly better hardware now... but what fun is a phone that doesn't let you tweak it to your heart's content? For me, I will stick with the N1 over the G2.

Doesn't T-mobile eventually send you a message telling you that you're required to upgrade your data plan because they've figured out that you're on a smartphone?
I didn't see any threads about this anywhere, so I figure this might be interesting for at least a few people, especially those on contract.
I decided to check to see how readily available the Nexus 4 was on T-Mobile's website. I went through the motions and added it to my cart (admittedly a bit more complicated than it should be...), but I noticed an interesting offer:
"You are eligible to receive data service at a reduced price."
To the tune of $15 as opposed to $30. The catch? You gotta buy at full price ($499.99). Before you wave this off as nonsense, the interesting part is that if you do the math (assuming a 2-year contract, of course), getting the phone at full-price and then paying $15 for data turns out to be CHEAPER than getting it for $199.99 and continuing to pay $30!
Buying Subsidized - 200 + 24*30 = $920
Buying Unsubsidized - 500 + 24*15 = $860
Savings - 920 - 860 = $60!
Of course, that's over the course of two years... It's up to you to determine whether such a huge initial plunge is worth it in the long-run. I'm going to call T-Mobile soon to ask them a few more questions about this offer. Some things I don't quite know:
Am I still getting unthrottled 4G data?
Does this price stay in effect as long as I'm on T-Mobile and don't change my plan?
Does this affect the Family Plan I'm on in any way?
That second question is pretty important. Unless T-Mobile fails miserably as a service provider, I don't see myself leaving them anytime soon, and paying $15/mo. for unlimited 4G HPSA+ (soon to be LTE) sound amazing. I'd definitely want that grandfathered, just in case Tmo decides to kill their Unlimited Nationwide 4G plans in the future.
If anyone with T-Mobile (customer or representative) actually knows the answers to those questions, let me know. Depending on the answers, I just might go this route.
Why not just switch from the subsidized Classic plan to an unsubsidized Value plan and get the phone from Google (in a few weeks time)? Unlimited unthrottled data is just $20 on a Value plan (the voice/messaging part of the plan is cheaper, too), and you're free to bring in phones whenever you want instead of on these artificial 2-year contract cycles.
this is just for data, what about talk and text? I know you can text through data but wasn't this phone not able to talk through data or something like that??
I went to the site and see no such offer?
Can you show pictures or give detailed directions as to how you added it to your cart?
I even asked a tmo rep on chat and they said there's no such thing.
This type of discussion is already occurring here

I just moved and thanks to my Android powered Logitech Revue doubling as a bride from wifi to ethernet, I am powering my home network with my Droid 4's wifi tethering. I'm using Liquid Smooth and not paying for tethering and have unlimited data. Does Verizon freak out at some point when you use 20GB or something of tethering a month?
I am considering not getting cable internet as 20/10mbps seems sufficient.
Umm...probably not. Since the law passed making tethering fees illegal, they can't do much. However, what will likely happen is different. The last round of people able to get grandfathered into unlimited data will be seeing their contracts end in June. At that point, those of us with unlimited data will all be out of contract, thus giving verizon the option of turning it off for all of us in 1 big swoop. So while you can do this, I wouldn't suggest it. Don't really wanna bring attention to the loophole. That 20gb you used for $30....could have made them hundreds...
Sent from my DROID4 using xda app-developers app
If you buy the next phone off contract though, you still can keep your unlimited data right? I think the bigger issue is that Verizon is throttling data speeds. That will definitely leave a dent.
If you pay full retail cost for the phone and don't sign a new contract, you can keep your unlimited data, for now at least.

Not true about the June date for everyone. I renewed my contract last year on 2/29 for the leap day sale. On VZW's website it says I'll be eligible for a discounted upgrade on 11/1/13 and contract end date is 3/1/14.
I'm currently grandfathered into VZW unlimited data and I'd like to keep it but nobody else on my fam plan wants to resign a 2yr contract so I cant transfer my upgrade to them to get a subsidized n6. I'm wondering if the tmobile $30/mo plan will pay my early termination fee if I use my upgrade on vzw to get a n6 and try to immediately switch to tmobile $30/mo plan with a new n6?
The $30 plan is prepaid and I doubt they will buy you out for that.

^This^ In order for them to pay off your ETF, you have to sign up for a post paid plan. On top of that, you also have to trade in your current device to qualify. So I doubt you would be getting the full amount back for the N6 from VZW only to buy another one from T-Mo. Not sure if you come out in the red or green though, as it pretty much all depends on how much they'd be giving you for your N6 from VZW.
Thanks for the info. Gotta figure out what the best plan of action is to get the N6
If you know someone on TMO, do the refer a friend thing! I'm on a $50 unlimited everything plan right now because I used him as a referral.

that only lasts 1 year then back to full price though right? like $80~/mo for unlimited everything and have to buy phones at full retail, correct?
I'm grandfathered at VZW for about $50mo with unlimited data. Only reason to switch for me is if I can get a plan cheaper than $50 to make up the price difference of paying for a full retail phone.
I think the new nexus 6 will support all the carriers so the vzw should work on t mobile. It would be like bring your own device instead of trading the phone in. I would wait till the spec from version and t mobile are fully released.
