I am using a custom Rom for android 4.4.0 and recently got an OTA alert for 4.4.2.
I've come across something similar twice.
First was when I used a rom to stock android 4.2.2 and then used OTA to get 4.3 and it worked fine, but the second time was 4.3 to 4.4 and it messed my phone up big time and took a whole day to sort it out.
Would it be safe to go through with using OTA for 4.4 to 4.4.2?
Are you using a stock GE?
Why don't try to flash a 4.4.2 rom?

So I've been sitting on 4.1.2 and 1.29 Software for a while because I didn't wanted to tamper with my root. Recently decided to update, but I want to install the Custom Rom from Hawknest:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2496069
My main question is do I need to update to 4.3(Or 4.4?) before flashing in Ecliptic on TWRP or can I skip that part and simply flash in the Rom?
If I have to update, how do I update manually? Updating over the air sends me to TWRP after installing and I'm guessing this is because installing from OTA will get me unrooted. Finally, how do I know which is the correct ROM for me, he has KitKat and JellyBean as downloadables so I am uncertain. I'm guessing JellyBean, but I would like to get KitKat if possible.
My phone has:
Software 1.29.651.10
Firmware 4.1.2
HTCSense 5.0
I'm S-On on TWRP 2.6
Well what i did yesterday was go to Ecliptic kitkat from 4.1.2 just did bootloader and s_off rooted and install rexovery in rexovery did 3 full wipes (just in case) flash kitkat then the lastest modem for our sprint one niw im good and rolling

all the questions you have can be answered with bd19 frequently asked in q&a its very resourceful! also make sure you understand the file structure change after 4.1 or can have storage issues, also in q&a. imo getting s-off before doing anything would be a good starting point. good luck!
If I'm not mistaken you're also going to need to update your touch firmware as well

Buddy has a Sprint moto X that he accidentally upgraded to 4.4. Does sbfing the phone w/ a 4.2.2 "image" properly reset the device to 4.2.2 or is it incompatible?

look for Guide for Returning to Stock 4.4 or 4.2.4 Camera Update part and follow
So I've previously tried installing a 4.4 and a 4.4.2 ROM on my XT1056, with both leading up to recovery failure once I realized the ROM does not have all of the features that I want or has some bugs.
When I installed the 4.4 over 4.2.2 without flashing it, I then ran into problems like FCs to the point where I could not even get past the screen lock. When I rebooted into recovery it would stay on for a little less than a minute, and while I was trying to restore stock, the recovery would come to a halt and reboot my system. I then had to restore my system.
Today I tried putting 4.4.2 on it and it got through but it had a feature missing from it that I was looking forward to and I tried going back to stock once again and the exact same thing happens. Interrupted restoration to a reboot of nothing.

not sure what you did maybe try reinstalling the recovery
First issue is your setting will fc when your base ROM is 4.2.2 and you have flashed a 4.4 or 4.4.2 ROM, the modem needs to be upgraded to prevent such issues, second issue is the recovery which also needs to be updated to kitkat otherwise you will not be able to restore your nandroids. So you either need to update to kitkat or stay with jb and not flash any kitkat roms

If I were to root 4.4 after taking the OTA, that flashes over a new radio? And if I still go through going to 4.4, would I be able to restore to 4.2.2?

Yes the ota flashes new radios and boot loaders, you can only downgrade from 4.4 to post camera 4.2.2 sbf firmware, I don't believe we can downgrade from 4.4.2 to 4.2.2

Posible upgrade and downgrade for MotoX
Im quoting a post from MakTail in other forum:
=======
There are currently 4 different available bootloaders for the Moto X.
In chronological order:
1) Pre-Camera 4.2.2
2) Post-Camera 4.2.2
3) KitKat 4.4
4) KitKat 4.4.2
Pre-Camera ----> Post-Camera <-----> KitKat 4.4 -----> KitKat 4.4.2
The arrows indicate when the bootloader downgrade is possible:
------> (one way update)
<----> (you can move back and forth between these bootloaders)
=======
i think this resolves all the questions about.

right this has to do with the bootloader only thou.
you can still flash everything else but if you do flash everything else and you get a OTA Update and you install it. It will brick your phone and it is not easy to get out of it and sometimes you can't
Howdy folks,
It might possibly be the noobiest question ever, but here we go... I have an XT1058 (AT&T model), and I would like to I manually upgrade from 4.2.2 (rooted with locked bootloader) to KitKat 4.4. The rationale for this is that 4.4 can still be rooted and it would offer some advantages over 4.2.2 (Google Wallet for one). The problem is that all OTA updates are way past 4.4 at this point in time, so I can't use that. Is there a factory 4.4 ROM that I can manually flash with ADB?
Thanks
Hi All,
I'm still rocking my 2013 Moto X XT1060 as my daily device. It's currently on 4.4, rooted, unlocked bootloader, stock rom with exposed framework. i disabled the OTA updates on it because at the time, I didn't have an unlocked bootloader and didn't want to loose root (I'm not on the dev-edition). Anyway, my bluetooth has started to crash and want to/should update 4.4.4 or 5.1. What do you recommend?
In addition to that, what method should I use to get there:
1. SFB back to 4.2.2 (I'm currently on 4.4 so I don't think that shouldn't be a problem but please tell me otherwise)
1a. Take all the OTAs to 4.4.4 or 5.1?
2. SFB to 4.4.4 (directly from 4.4, not sure if that's a problem)
3. SFB to 5.1 (directly from 4.4, again, not sure if that's a problem)
Thank you!
If it were me, I would take the 4.4.4 update and stop there. I have mine rooted with stock 4.4.4, and everything just works. Kit kat is really the sweet spot for this phone.
Thanks! What method should I take to get there? Can I SBF directly to it from 4.4 or is it possible to downgrade back to 4.2.2 from 4.4 and take the updates? I've been out of the scene since I got the phone back in 2013 so I can't remember if downgrading to 4.2.2 is OK.
You should not downgrade to 4.2.2, besides it's not necessary. If you want to get to 4.4.4, then I would use the method compiled in this post by liveroy. It's not complicated, simply follow the directions exactly. I then reflashed TWRP recovery, and installed SuperSU, in order to use AdAway and ES File Explorer's root access. If you want to remain stock, then omit TWRP and SuperSU.

Note: as suggested by KidJoe, I used TWRP 2.8.6.0 and the most recent SuperSU.

Agreed. I kept KK while my friends upgraded to 5.1, nothing but problems and extremely poor battery life.
