I'm still rocking my 2013 Moto X XT1060 as my daily device. It's currently on 4.4, rooted, unlocked bootloader, stock rom with exposed framework. i disabled the OTA updates on it because at the time, I didn't have an unlocked bootloader and didn't want to loose root (I'm not on the dev-edition). Anyway, my bluetooth has started to crash and want to/should update 4.4.4 or 5.1. What do you recommend?
In addition to that, what method should I use to get there:
1. SFB back to 4.2.2 (I'm currently on 4.4 so I don't think that shouldn't be a problem but please tell me otherwise)
1a. Take all the OTAs to 4.4.4 or 5.1?
2. SFB to 4.4.4 (directly from 4.4, not sure if that's a problem)
3. SFB to 5.1 (directly from 4.4, again, not sure if that's a problem)

If it were me, I would take the 4.4.4 update and stop there. I have mine rooted with stock 4.4.4, and everything just works. Kit kat is really the sweet spot for this phone.
Thanks! What method should I take to get there? Can I SBF directly to it from 4.4 or is it possible to downgrade back to 4.2.2 from 4.4 and take the updates? I've been out of the scene since I got the phone back in 2013 so I can't remember if downgrading to 4.2.2 is OK.
You should not downgrade to 4.2.2, besides it's not necessary. If you want to get to 4.4.4, then I would use the method compiled in this post by liveroy. It's not complicated, simply follow the directions exactly. I then reflashed TWRP recovery, and installed SuperSU, in order to use AdAway and ES File Explorer's root access. If you want to remain stock, then omit TWRP and SuperSU.

Note: as suggested by KidJoe, I used TWRP 2.8.6.0 and the most recent SuperSU.

Agreed. I kept KK while my friends upgraded to 5.1, nothing but problems and extremely poor battery life.

revert to stock (either via RSD or via fastbooting system and recovery). There are numerous places explaining how to do either of those, search around if you don't know how
Where would be an trusted source for me to download images for system and recovery?

Neither SuperSU nor ClockworkMod Superuser seem to work right now (VZW dev unlocked bootloader). Best to wait for the developers to release an update.

Rooting Moto X is kinding overwhelming to me from I read some thread for few hours. I know some basic sdk. I don't know where to start since I'm new to Moto X yesterday as 12/27. I had previous phone S4 and Nexus 5.
I have tried to flashed 4.2.2 camera update but it failed on RSD Lite since it has no root permission (stupid me), I flashed back 4.4 instead and working, looking for rooting solution for it. Not calling out for help, taking time here.

From what I've seen it looks like you have to revert back to 4.2.2, and then unlock the bootloader, install a custom recovery (my favorite is CWM but some people use TWRP or something), and then flash your device. Here are a couple more comprehensive answers:

I went through all process and pain in the ass. I rooted and disabled write protection and flashed back to 4.2.2 camera update and redo root process again and as I go through it, seem I can't obtained root access. Is this lost root? Tried to use supersu from playstore and says "there is no SU binary installed and SuperSu cannot install it. This is a problem"
looks like do I have to wait for next update?
Please help.

If you have the ATT variant of the phone (retail or Moto Maker), and want to be rooted on KitKat (Android 4.4) you need to follow SlapMyMoto -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2538896 .
RSDLite should not fail due to no root permissions. RSDLite doesn't care about root.
If you are following SlapMyMoto or RockMyMoto, when you are on KitKat (4.4) and need to revert to a 4.2.2 rom it says you have to flash to the "camera update" 4.2.2 rom. This is because you can't flash back to the initial 4.2.2 rom the phone shipped with. If you had problems with RSDlite, I would question if you are trying to flash the initial shipping 4.2.2 rom, not the camera update one.
If you are having problems with either process, I'd go into the appropriate thread and post a detailed account of what you've done (including exact file names for roms you flashed), and what the outcome was, asking for help. That is going to be the best way to find a solution.

If you can unlock your bootloader, it is the quickest and easiest way to root. NOTE: Unless your phone is the developer edition, unlocking your boot loader voids your warranty.
ATT variant of the phone can't unlock the bootloader, so SlapMyMoto is needed if you want to be running Kit Kat (android 4.4). And RockMyMoto is used if you want to be on Jelly Bean (4.2.2), but only works on the "Camera update" OTA rom. Not the initial rom the X shipped with which is also 4.2.2

I get it, I was flashing initial 4.2.2 and failed to flash and I did flash camera update and went through fine and rooted and write protection off. After this I flashed back to 4.2.2 and tried rockmymoto again and It all I can get system warning "system is not write protected executing step 3" reroot has been lost.
So I've previously tried installing a 4.4 and a 4.4.2 ROM on my XT1056, with both leading up to recovery failure once I realized the ROM does not have all of the features that I want or has some bugs.
When I installed the 4.4 over 4.2.2 without flashing it, I then ran into problems like FCs to the point where I could not even get past the screen lock. When I rebooted into recovery it would stay on for a little less than a minute, and while I was trying to restore stock, the recovery would come to a halt and reboot my system. I then had to restore my system.
Today I tried putting 4.4.2 on it and it got through but it had a feature missing from it that I was looking forward to and I tried going back to stock once again and the exact same thing happens. Interrupted restoration to a reboot of nothing.

not sure what you did maybe try reinstalling the recovery
First issue is your setting will fc when your base ROM is 4.2.2 and you have flashed a 4.4 or 4.4.2 ROM, the modem needs to be upgraded to prevent such issues, second issue is the recovery which also needs to be updated to kitkat otherwise you will not be able to restore your nandroids. So you either need to update to kitkat or stay with jb and not flash any kitkat roms

Yes the ota flashes new radios and boot loaders, you can only downgrade from 4.4 to post camera 4.2.2 sbf firmware, I don't believe we can downgrade from 4.4.2 to 4.2.2

right this has to do with the bootloader only thou.
you can still flash everything else but if you do flash everything else and you get a OTA Update and you install it. It will brick your phone and it is not easy to get out of it and sometimes you can't
I read that 4.4.3 will be coming any day for Sprint Moto X (already out for T-Mobile.)
I've rooted my phone, deleted some bloatware, installed Xposed, etc.
Will I need to re-flash the stock ROM before updating to 4.4.3?
Or will there be a pre-rooted 4.4.3 on this forum which I can flash right over my phone as it is (like there were for my older devices)?
Sorry, new to Moto X.
You'll need the bloat back, that's why you should only disable and not delete it. OTAs do file checks on the system partition and if any are missing or modified the OTA will fail. You'll also need to disable Xposed as well.

I was just going to ask the exactly same question. I am also on Sprint, and had gone through the official bootloader unlock but not changed the stock rom. I imagine I will still get the OTA update, and taking it will not make me lose root?
I have the OTA update reminder frozen with Titanium Backup right now and am currently running 4.4 out of paranoia. Reading some of the other posts, it seems that I might be OK and OTA updates may only affect those on ATT/Verizon that had to go through other means to get get root?
Always best to freeze...not delete. Takes very little space up and no problem with ota's.
You can always download the official 4.4.2 from Moto and flash system.img and recovery.img. Those will get you back to stock. Then you can take the OTA, flash TWRP, root and reinstall Xposed (all your modules and Xposed/gravity box settings will still be there).
That is what I did going from 4.4 to 4.4.2. Worked like a charm.
You have to flash system.img with mfastboot though not just fastboot. Just Google instructions. They are on xda as well.

This was asked about when the 4.2.2 to 4.4 OTA came out, and again when the 4.4 to 4.4.2 OTA came out..

So here's the deal, I unlocked my T-Mobile Moto X bootloader through Motorola's website about a year ago or so. I also rooted and didn't bother updating afterwards to anything since I had everything working perfectly for me. Now I need to update my 4.2.2 Moto X to 4.4.3 (or really anything >=4.3 just so I can use my Moto 360 that'll be arriving soon).
My question is, with an unlocked bootloader, rooted, TWRP 2.6.3.1, Xposed-installed Moto X, can I go ahead and flash a stock 4.4.3 ROM (for example from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/development/rom-stock-flashable-t-mobile-t2773675) and just call it a day?
I've been reading past threads and stuff to get back into the loop, but I just can'f find anything to answer me the simple question of updating an unlocked+rooted 4.2.2->4.4+ while keeping root. Just the simple question of, if I get a stock 4.4 image and flash it on my phone, will everything be okay?
I no longer have the passion and interest to constantly be fiddling with kernels, ROMs, and little hacks with my phone like I used to with my OG Droid and, to a lesser extent, with my Galaxy Nexus (plus I feel like it's gotten significantly less easy since those OG days).
I know (i.e. 90% sure) that one way to do what I want (kinda) is RSDLite/manually go back to stock without root on 4.2.2 and then accept the OTA, but certainly it has to be easier than that right? What happened to the days where I can just find a new Gingerbread ROM for my Froyo Droid and just flash it right then and there? Now everything is "go back to stock and do these convoluted steps."
(I'm sorry I'm ranting, I'm just really tired at the moment haha)

If you don't care about retaining your data, grab the 4.4.3 fxz and unzip it. Follow the directions for returning back to stock here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/general/ref-complete-moto-x-guides-information-t2603358 but replace the files to be flashed with the files from the 4.4.3 fxz. Not sure where you got the idea that you need to go back to stock. Word of caution, once on 4.4.3 there's no going back to an older version.

You can take the ota but you need the stock recovery. Since you are unlocked you will not lose your unlocked-ness(lol) if you take an ota. But you do need to be completely stock: no su, no custom recovery, etc etc. But once you upgrade to 4.4.3 getting root back is as simple as flashing the appropriate version recovery again and then flashing supersu.

Yeah that would work as long as your radio is compatible with the rom. The rom you shared earlier should be fine. Just don't downgrade to anything pre 4.4 as that can cause issues because of partition sizes (or so I've heard). But after that I wouldn't take any OTA's cause your bootloader would be incompatible with the OTA and possibly cause a brick. If I were you I'd revert to stock and take the long way to 4.4.3 just so I can get the OTA for when Android L comes out. In fact thats what I plan on doing if the Sunshine bootloader unlock is successful. But if you don't care about that then everything should be fine.
