Hi,
I have my dongle setup. My two mobile devices see it but my Chrome plugin does not see it...
How do I get this to work with Chrome?

Betting you are running some security program that has a firewall.
I'm not sure what port needs to be open to see it but I'm sure it listed here somewhere.
If not then another factor can be having AP Isolation On at your router. Disable it.

The PC app won't work unless the PC has a WiFi adapter. Chromecast when in setup mode is a WiFi AP and you need to connect to it so the app can send the parameters for Chromecast to become a WiFi client on your network.
You already have Chromecast set up and on your WiFi network already, so you can safely ignore the PC setup app.
Can your PC see any of your WiFi devices?
Are your WiFi devices and PC on different subnets? If so, multicast traffic doesn't route across subnets without help so that would be why Chromecast isn't being seen by your wired network segment.

I have heard that about VMWare but Oddly enough I have VMWare and it's Network adapters are enabled yet I have no problems.
Could be because I have a very old version installed though...It might also be that I rarely use VMWare and only after using it do the Adapters interfere...

Ok you can't use the Chromecast setup app on a PC without a WiFI Card!
I think that is where the confusion is...That app your running on the PC is only to setup the Chromecast so it can connect to the Router/AP
If your other devices can see the Chromecast then you have already done all that and do not need the Chromecast app to run on your PC.
What you need is the Chrome Browser and this Chrome Extension
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/google-cast/boadgeojelhgndaghljhdicfkmllpafd
Add that extension to Chrome and Chrome will display the GoogleCast Icon in the Browser which will let you stream content from any Tab of Chrome to the Chromecast.
That is where the Chromecast will show up.
That App your trying to use is only needed to setup the Chromecast for the Network. The only way to stream from a PC to a CCast after it is set u is to Install that extension I linked to or to look for the CCast Icon on the Websites that support it!
I.E. You Tube does not require you to have the extension installed. Their Video player has a CCast Icon on it to send the stream to any available CCast devices. And using that gives better quality than the Cast Tab feature does.
Same goes for NetFlix as well.

Yeah I pretty much refuse to use Windows 8! LOL
I understand trying to make Windows Touch Friendly but that doesn't mean it had to be Mouse UNfriendly! LOL If they had just gave you the option of using Tiles or Desktop I might give it a shot. And I'm sure there is some tweak program that lets you do that.
Only thing I know of that Win8 does that Win7 doesn't is miracast support. At least thats all I have found yet...
I'm sure the VmWare issue is real I just found it odd that I'm not having the issue...

Which version of WIndows? 7? 8? 8.1?
Can''t help you much with Win8 but if you go to the control panel and look up your network and sharing center what does it label your network connection?
Home? Work? or Public?
You say you have no security software but Windows comes with it's own security software built in and it could be that the it is blocking the communication you need to see the CCast.
CCast will only work if it is set to HOME as Public blocks all the ports you would need to see and communicate with the CCast.

Are your wireless and wired connections on different subnets? Ie, PC is 192.168.1.x and wireless devices are on 192.168.2.x?
If they're all on the same subnet then Asphyx is probably right and it's the network location (Public/Home/Work) blocking traffic.

No Media Server Options

I'm trying to play music/video on my Xperia Z from my laptop.
I'm connected via wi-fi with a strong signal strength.
Apparently I should have a 'Media Server' option in the 'Menu' part of 'My Music', and within the 'Wirelss & Networks' menu, but I don't.

Many thanks for the reply.
My laptop is definitely set for streaming. My PS3 sees it and can stream. In fact I'm able to see my Xperia Z on my laptop wirelessly and play content from the phone on my laptop. However, as mentioned, there is no option to see things from my Xperia Z. I would have thought there'd be an option once I am connected via wi-fi. But there's no option on my phone whatsoever for 'Media Server'.
If the notebook is setup correctly, the Walkman app on the phone will see the the laptop as a source. The Walkman app list's all DLNA compliant servers on the same network, no special setup is required for this.
What server do you use? Windows Media Player/Windows built-in? In case you do, did you check the security settings for the media streaming on your Windows-end and checked if the Z is allowed as a client? Default setting I believe is disallow for new clients.

I am certain that my laptop allows new clients. All 'NEW' devices are allowed. The only limited access I can find is that my PC states "This device cannot access your media when your PC sleeps". There is no other restrictions on the network. 2 PS3s, 1 XBOX, 2 laptops, 1 desktop are all connected to the network and can share content with each other.
What worries me is that there is absolutely no 'Media Server Settings' option on my Xperia Z. According to the user manual the option should be there like the last image -
Compared to what I see on my phone, the option simply isn't there. Shouldn't this be present regardless? Or even greyed out?
Media Server options on the device are to control exposure of the devices content to the network. This obviously works as you can stream stuff off your device, the device's DLNA server obviously works as intended. Other than that there is no option to be set on the device itself.

My PS3 is connect via a cable. However...
It's nothing to do with my router or my laptop - My sister has an Xperia Z and I've just used it to connect to my Wi-fi, and she can stream files to the phone from my laptop folders. She even has the option of "MEDIA SERVER" in the menu part of the Walkman app. This is something that does not appear on my phone as can be seen in the below pick...
Regardless of whether I can connect to wi-fi or stream files etc. The "MEDIA SERVER" option in the menu should appear between "Download music info" and "Visible items". However it is not there. I am missing a menu option on my phone. That's the issue I am having.
Apart from the fact that even I do not have media server, you can open the video app and there are 2 icons. One which contains all your movies and the other plays movies from DLNA devices. I used it once for playing videos via my Network hard drive but now I prefer using Skifta App.

Chromecast build with OTA updates disabled?

Hey!
I want to stream local media files from my pc to chromecast using fling.
I'm now on build 13300 with root/ADB enabled and OTA updates disabled.
So, I would like a Chromecast build (maybe 12840?) with OTA updates disabled.
Can someone give me a link, please?

Won't help. Fling etc. were blocked on the server side. Going back to an older firmware build will not make Fling work again.
but why does the chromecast have to call out to server if your streaming is via your pc to the tv ? cant something be turned off on the chromecast image to allow no connections to the server ? or have your pc emulate a server connection and tell the chromecast to allow your emulated server to connect to it and allow fling ?
That's what I wondered. Assumed it was impossible since nobody did it

The chromecast on boot calls googles server to pull a list of available applications, and with "fling" removed from that list, the chromecast is unable to stream local content. Currently there is no way to disable this feature, and a PC can not emulate google's server call as all traffic is done over HTTPS with signed google certificates.
tl;dr, we can't really do anything until google lets us, which kind of sucks.

Chromecast as a second monitor?

The Cast chrome extension allows for you to duplicate your screen but why not make it a second screen
i will use an apple tv as my example because i have one of those too. with airplay mirroring you can choose between duplicating your screen or making the ATV a second monitor of sorts. could we do that for the Chromecast?

Nothing says it can't be done on a CCast but it requires OS support from the device you want to add the display to.
The CCast is different in that it was meant to be a PULL device that pulls content from someplace, where Miracast and others are Push Devices where you push content to them.

Win 8.1 specifically has support for Miracast. CCast is very different and would require a different approach.
That doesn't mean a Windows program could not be written to do it, or that MS couldn't put it into some later version of Windows but it would have to be written specifically to work on a CCast including the app the CCast would load and the Windows side of the programming that would render the display for it.

Need Plex for Android v3.2.8.109

Here is a link to the announcement from Plex's Forum.
I saw the forum post about the Android update, but I was wondering about iOS. I got a couple of people to buy the Plex iOS app when it was on sale a few weeks ago with the promise that it would support the Chromecast soon. Do I need to tell them to update?
Also wondering about Plex Web, but I'll just check that when I get home.

Plex web casts fine for me!
Yes, an update is needed for the iOS app to support the Chromecast without Plex Pass.
I can't get Plex Web to cast. Before a cast icon used to show up for me. Now I don't see the cast icon at all.

The issues with PlexWeb seem to be related to the googlecast extension.
Both the original and the beta seems to crash a lt and the Beta even when it was working would not stream to CCast.
[EDIT] Apparently iOS has also got it...

No, I'm using http://plex.tv/web/app. As I said, it had the cast icon previously, but now it's gone.
Update: I turned on my U.S. VPN, and the cast icon re-appeared. But strangely once I turn the VPN off, the cast icon seems to be back permanently. Must have enabled it permanently in the Plex Web settings. Don't know if it's a misguided attempt to be smart with location-specific features, or some unrelated side effect. But whatever, it works now.
Completely separate issue, just an unexpected observation: I thought that since the VPN is only running on my PC, Plex Web wouldn't be able find the Chromecast on my local network since they would be on two separate networks, but I was wrong. Plex Web finds the Chromecast and casts to it just fine even with the VPN turned on. Huh! I wonder how that works?
DJames1 said:

Update: Got it! It's a bug. Plex seems to be assuming now that if you aren't currently accessing Plex Web from the U.S., then you can't possibly have a Chromecast and there's no need to enable the cast icon.

I bet money that it isn't Plex that is detecting this location but the Chrome Googlecast Extension required to see the icon in PlexWeb.
Good theory, but unlikely I think given that tab casting and other extensions like Videostream didn't have any problem connecting to the Chromecast. It could actually be something completely random like turning on the VPN cleared or bypassed a cache.

Does Videostream require the Googlecast ext to work?
Here is why I suspect the GCast ext...
Both Netflix and YouTube require the GCast Ext to display icons on their Web Based Players.
BOTH have content restrictions based on Location since Netflix has different content in Europe than they have in US (I suspect YouTube may as well).
What would be the best way to ensure Europe doesn't have the ability to send US Netflix content to a CCast via the Web?
Have the GCast Ext remove the Icon and not identify a located CCast when location is detected as not in region!
Otherwise the Website itself would have to do this detection which is difficult.
Granted I could be dead wrong in your case because you do have a very different/complicated VPN going on that can always makes things act funny, but with the soon to be release for UK and I suppose the rest of Europe it stands to reason that Google is trying to insert some regional control over the system and since most of the Web page support requires GCast Ext (coupled with the crashing problems many seem to be having with it,) It makes sense that they are trying to do it all in that extension.
I hope they ditch that ext requirement at some point and simply make and installable app or program that will do this outside of Chrome because the more I use chrome with all it's compatibility issues with things like PayPal the less I like it!
For those that want to know. I was able to successfully update my PMS on my NAS. I also verified cc functions on both android and iOS (some people were not sure)
Sent from my SCH-R970 using Tapatalk
That seems very unlikely. Both Netflix and Youtube initally access the same url in any country, nothing to do with the Google Cast extension. Content filtering by IP address is applied at their end. I've never seen their cast icons go missing. Plex is neutral and would have no reason to apply any filtering.
I'm going to do a test on another untouched system to see if I can spot exactly what causes the cast icon to first appear in the new Plex Web if it's not the VPN.

Chromiumcast OS

Since Chromecast OS is basically a cut-down version of Chrome OS, shouldn't the code be in Chromium OS codebase?
If so, we should build a Chromiumcast OS and port it to those MiniPC's on them market (if we have the kernel sources and drivers).
Can anyone check the possibility of the above?
However, since Chrome OS uses a different kind of boot image, we should ask Chainfire for help, since he is working on the Chromebook Pixel, as it has such a boot image.
It is funny thought, Google puts Android on a Chromebook, and we may put Chrom(ium) OS on Android devices.
Update 1: Sorry for posting this here, XDA Labs isn't letting me reply to my own thread, but why not port it?
We should make it a full Chromium OS (with the abilities to make a local owner account and recieving casts, as well as casting to another device), while we're at it.
Update 2: Apparently it's a known XDA Labs server API issue, they're working on though, for now I need to wait for there to be a 2nd page to be able to post seperately from the opening post.
If it's just a webpage, then how about packaging it for the different systems (Windows, OS X, Linux, Android, Ubuntu Touch, Firefox OS, iOS, Windows Modern (8/8.1), Windows Universal (10), Sailfish, Unix, Chrome OS, etc.)?
Yes, I'm aware that half of these technically (via ports, for example) are either Linux or Unix (and that Linux is a port of Unix).
I would have included SkyOS, however it appears to have been discontinued before even graduating Alpha... several years ago.
It's not really a cut down version of Chrome OS but more of a cut down version of the Chrome Browser sans any ability to run Chrome OS Apps.
Similar to the chrome browser you find in an Android Phone.
It has nothing to do with what the OS is based on, the important part isn't the OS, but the actual cast receiver application. I was tinkering around with it for a little while and ended up with a not-entirely-functional APK file that implemented a cast receiver, using actual google code and libraries. Installed it on a Nexus 7, which was discoverable as a cast receiver on the network. More important thing to work on led to ignoring the project for a while.

The Cast Receiver is usually not much more than an HTML5 webpage.

you can browse them all in just about any browser.
Want proof
Look at the linkage in the whitelist and go to the URLs for any receiver...
Example....
https://www.gstatic.com/cv/cast/apps/receiver/webrtc/stable/receiver1.html
They may call them HTM5 Applications but when it comes right down to it there is no difference between that and a webpage. Only in rare cases will they put security that denies a browser from loading them and in most cases if it fails to work it is only because they require and use some firmware code (i.e. Video Player) to function.

Except load the receiver app that is waiting for linkage information from the app that was supposed to launch it when it connected to the CCast!
99.9% of the work is done at the controlling device not the receiver app.
That is the only thing the CCast actually loads the rest is sent to that receiver by the Controler app!
When you connect to the CCast from an app that's all the CCasts loads. Once loaded you can then send content to that Receiver.
Here is the receiver app Plex tells the CCast to load when you first connect their App to the CCast....
https://chromecast.plex.tv/production/index.html
The receivers are nothing more than webpages with various media players and java applications.

There really is no teaching the ignorant....
That page is the only thing the CCast loads!
The rest is done on the mobile device and that receiver does nothing without the mobile device connecting to that page you say does nothing...
Tell me did you try reading the source code of that page or was that too difficult for you?

Let me make this very clear;
1) Install https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.netflix.mediaclient&hl=en
2) Run it.
3) hit the chromecast button. Oh, there is none! Too bad.

Took you long enough to find the ONE RECEIVER APP (and it is the ONLY APP) that doesn't get loaded from the WEB because it is part of the CCast Firmware!
I find it interesting that in a discussion of RECEIVER APPS you show something from the play store where there are no receiver apps to try and prove your wrong point.
Just look at the Chromecast firmware, there's custom ROMs here. In theory you could just look at it and experiment...
I understand that there is no point in porting ChromiumOS, but what about the AndroidTV UI, with Cast Recieving built-in?

That would be awesome!
I think it could be a perfect combo to turn a Raspberry Pi into a casting device. Chromium OS already exists for Raspberry Pi, but it still has to be improved. http://www.chromiumosforsbc.org/

I agree, but I would love if someone managed to remove the mandatory Google login, otherwise I won't use it.
Deleted my account some time back, don't want to open another one.

But the Google log-in should be optional, not mandatory.
