No Media Server Options - Xperia Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm trying to play music/video on my Xperia Z from my laptop.
I'm connected via wi-fi with a strong signal strength.
Apparently I should have a 'Media Server' option in the 'Menu' part of 'My Music', and within the 'Wirelss & Networks' menu, but I don't.

Any ideas/thoughts on why this could be would be most appreciated.
Thanks.

Make sure your notebook is streaming-enabled. Its probably not, as the default setting is 'off'.

Many thanks for the reply.
My laptop is definitely set for streaming. My PS3 sees it and can stream. In fact I'm able to see my Xperia Z on my laptop wirelessly and play content from the phone on my laptop. However, as mentioned, there is no option to see things from my Xperia Z. I would have thought there'd be an option once I am connected via wi-fi. But there's no option on my phone whatsoever for 'Media Server'.

If the notebook is setup correctly, the Walkman app on the phone will see the the laptop as a source. The Walkman app list's all DLNA compliant servers on the same network, no special setup is required for this.
What server do you use? Windows Media Player/Windows built-in? In case you do, did you check the security settings for the media streaming on your Windows-end and checked if the Z is allowed as a client? Default setting I believe is disallow for new clients.

I am certain that my laptop allows new clients. All 'NEW' devices are allowed. The only limited access I can find is that my PC states "This device cannot access your media when your PC sleeps". There is no other restrictions on the network. 2 PS3s, 1 XBOX, 2 laptops, 1 desktop are all connected to the network and can share content with each other.
What worries me is that there is absolutely no 'Media Server Settings' option on my Xperia Z. According to the user manual the option should be there like the last image -
Compared to what I see on my phone, the option simply isn't there. Shouldn't this be present regardless? Or even greyed out?

Media Server options on the device are to control exposure of the devices content to the network. This obviously works as you can stream stuff off your device, the device's DLNA server obviously works as intended. Other than that there is no option to be set on the device itself.

How is your PS3 connected to the network? Wireless or cable-bound? Your notebook, wireless or cable-bound?

My PS3 is connect via a cable. However...
It's nothing to do with my router or my laptop - My sister has an Xperia Z and I've just used it to connect to my Wi-fi, and she can stream files to the phone from my laptop folders. She even has the option of "MEDIA SERVER" in the menu part of the Walkman app. This is something that does not appear on my phone as can be seen in the below pick...
Regardless of whether I can connect to wi-fi or stream files etc. The "MEDIA SERVER" option in the menu should appear between "Download music info" and "Visible items". However it is not there. I am missing a menu option on my phone. That's the issue I am having.

Apart from the fact that even I do not have media server, you can open the video app and there are 2 icons. One which contains all your movies and the other plays movies from DLNA devices. I used it once for playing videos via my Network hard drive but now I prefer using Skifta App.

Dutty's ROM, Orb, and TCPMP

Hey everyone,
So I'm having an issue with Dutty's ROM, TCPMP, and Orb. All I'm trying to do is listen to a stream of music on Orb, and everytime I try, it fails. I've tried a soft reset, reassigning the file associations, changing orb's settings to a different media type, and reinstalling TCPMP to the .81 version. I've also tried copying new .dll's to the program folder, the windows folder and the folder where the cab was in which I opened the installer (the .dll's I installed were, "wmadmod", "wmsdmod", and "wmvdmod"), and I just keep getting the same error message, "Could not open URL!". I get the same error message if I try to watch a video. This has become extremely frustrating. If anyone has any idea how to fix this, please help. If not, is there any other comparable media player that would work with Orb that I could try? Any and all help again is greatly appreciated. Thanks again everyone.
check your computers firewall settings. Make sure in the orb config a OPEN PORT is put there.
Well I can get it to work on a PC, which tells me it should work on my phone, correct? So I don't know why it's not working on my phone. When I first installed Dutty's ROM, it worked, but after about two weeks, it stopped working, and I haven't been able to get it to work again since. I've had this issue before, and reinstalling TCPMP to the latest version and reinstalling the codecs needed to make it play, but it's not working now. I actually tried flashing my ROM to a clean Dutty with everything back to normal, but that didn't work either. I'll double check my router's firewall, but I don't think that's the issue; definitely a good observation though...Any other ideas?
try flashing it to different rom might help? At least you will know it's the rom or not.
Didn't solve the problem. I don't understand...
I am having same problem. I opened the right ports.
it says
Dialed: isp.cingular
cannot connect for an unknown reason. to check your connection settings and change them if needed, tap settings. If the problem continues, reset your mible device according to your manufacturers documentation and try again.
I opened all the right ports in my router. I ran a check in ORB and it passes, saying they are open. when on the orb site on my cell, it shows the videos, and even shows a small picture of the video next too it, but when I try to play it, I get the error above. i dont know what to do.

I had the same problem with Orb on Dutty's ROM (No. 6, AT&T version). What I ended up doing was creating a new network connection using the wap.cingular settings, then set that to the default network for programs that automatically connect. After that, Orb worked fine.

also, just to note, I can stream the test video from test.orb.com or what ever. It does play, i think its a nin concert or something. However, when I try to stream my stuff it doesnt work. this includes both AUDIO and VIDEO. In the stream options on the website in orb, I have it set to just .3gp. It gives a bunch of options including .asx, flash, winamp, 3gp w/ aac etc. I tried them all, and none of them work, but right now its set at just regular .3gp.
I have 16/2 mbit internet service and my phone is 3G, so I dont think its a bandwidth issue.
I have an 8925 tilt w/ Dutty's ROM # 7.
Hey guys, I was having the same issues with ORB until I found this cab which sets the wap settings for att. if you have att maybe they will help you too, not really had much of a problem since I got this cab, and I've used it on many many tilt roms.
Hope it helps, post back your results!
Well I think i got it working!
I used the shogan thing above, an now atleast windows media player will stream. .asx. I was able to play bleach video, as well as a mp3. I tried 3gp, and it still doesnt work

Anyone able to get .3gp to work? If so, what settings and what player? I've got orb working under this rom with .asx under windows media player but nothing else. I was able to get it to work with the real media format under real player and it seemed to stream smoother, but no full screen in real player (and now I've somehow changed something that makes the phone try to download the file instead of stream under that format). No luck with 3gp at all - streaming player either tells me that the media format isn't supported or that it can't connect to the network. This is driving me nuts because media player disconnects way too often...
I am now using duttys touchflo rom, and having more problems.
However, I ran into a problem. I am trying to use ORB to stream video and music from home. Its .ASX stream. On Dutty’s No 7 rom, it used his custom windows media player, after some fighting, I got it to work. Now I am trying to do the same thing but its using a program called TCPMP. Every time it loads after clicking a link I get the error “file not found! –web “my doc\stream.wmvebasx”” How, can I get the streams to go back to windows media player, if it even exists in this rom? Any help with the streaming with ORB would be greatly appricated 
as for the last poster, no I could not get .3gp to work at all Now I cant get .asx to work. Anyone got any idea's?

I was having the same problem, too. But after installing the "shogon" .cab file it started working (at least for my .asx stream). I haven't tried streaming a .3gp file on the Kaiser (mine is a CID unlocked Tilt). My speed tests calculated web speeds ranging between 64-230kbps before installing the shogon cab and it calculated 700+kbps afterward . ko0ky, do you know exactly what the cab changed in the configuration? Is it a proxy tweak? Thanks for posting the cab.
the issue is that you where using the att proxy, orb doesnt work when you connect via att/cingular proxy, that is the issue, that cab files removes the att proxy so now it works. The att proxy is useless and most media streaming doesnt work when you connect through it
I have old ATT Blue mMode...when I tried the shogun cing cab now I can't connect with the setting it made...had to revert back to my old mMode setting and now PIE won't connect at all??? What exactly besides creating a new connection with cingular settings does the shogun_cing.cab file do? As I need to reverse it...tried uninstalling it and resetting and still internet explorer won't connect...but Opera will???

I like the app a lot. Even works well over 3G connection. My only wish is if it can support play lists.
Looks very promising. Need to try it out first. I'll let you know when I install it on my device. What is the limitation of trial version?

Such a good job, Steve! Probably it's the best streaming solution currently available on the marketplace.
I just have a few (edited: he-he, "a few" ) feature requests, will be great to see 'em in the next release. Could you please:
- add MediaElement's volume control to the player and save/restore selected volume level;
- bookmark media position and resume playback from that position;
- auto resume playback after seek;
- disable err.media message and send email dialog (or at least make it configurable) - it's really annoyng. The reason: some people (like me) have some non-media files in the supported folders
- add an option to skip intermediate page and start playback instantly;
- add "Recently viewed medias" view;
- remember and restore (on app start) last visited server's folder. This option may be configurable;
- add an option to prevent playback on mobile connection (if option set, player should pause and stop streaming if connection switched to 3G/4G, and resume playback on WiFi/Eth);
- autorotate images based on EXIF orientation metadata;
- add ability to disable automatic image rotation based on handset orientation.
These ones are easy.
The hard one: could you implement adaptive streaming (bitrate based) "on the fly"?
I think with these enhancements your solution will be unbeatable! Thanks for hard work.
WBR, SeNS
P.S. Your server-side UPNP code for auto port mapping is not working with my router (NetGear FVG318). If you are interested, I can send you 100% working UPNP code (on C# but it shouldn't be a problem), PM me.

Betting you are running some security program that has a firewall.
I'm not sure what port needs to be open to see it but I'm sure it listed here somewhere.
If not then another factor can be having AP Isolation On at your router. Disable it.

The PC app won't work unless the PC has a WiFi adapter. Chromecast when in setup mode is a WiFi AP and you need to connect to it so the app can send the parameters for Chromecast to become a WiFi client on your network.
You already have Chromecast set up and on your WiFi network already, so you can safely ignore the PC setup app.
Can your PC see any of your WiFi devices?
Are your WiFi devices and PC on different subnets? If so, multicast traffic doesn't route across subnets without help so that would be why Chromecast isn't being seen by your wired network segment.

I have heard that about VMWare but Oddly enough I have VMWare and it's Network adapters are enabled yet I have no problems.
Could be because I have a very old version installed though...It might also be that I rarely use VMWare and only after using it do the Adapters interfere...

Ok you can't use the Chromecast setup app on a PC without a WiFI Card!
I think that is where the confusion is...That app your running on the PC is only to setup the Chromecast so it can connect to the Router/AP
If your other devices can see the Chromecast then you have already done all that and do not need the Chromecast app to run on your PC.
What you need is the Chrome Browser and this Chrome Extension
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/google-cast/boadgeojelhgndaghljhdicfkmllpafd
Add that extension to Chrome and Chrome will display the GoogleCast Icon in the Browser which will let you stream content from any Tab of Chrome to the Chromecast.
That is where the Chromecast will show up.
That App your trying to use is only needed to setup the Chromecast for the Network. The only way to stream from a PC to a CCast after it is set u is to Install that extension I linked to or to look for the CCast Icon on the Websites that support it!
I.E. You Tube does not require you to have the extension installed. Their Video player has a CCast Icon on it to send the stream to any available CCast devices. And using that gives better quality than the Cast Tab feature does.
Same goes for NetFlix as well.

Yeah I pretty much refuse to use Windows 8! LOL
I understand trying to make Windows Touch Friendly but that doesn't mean it had to be Mouse UNfriendly! LOL If they had just gave you the option of using Tiles or Desktop I might give it a shot. And I'm sure there is some tweak program that lets you do that.
Only thing I know of that Win8 does that Win7 doesn't is miracast support. At least thats all I have found yet...
I'm sure the VmWare issue is real I just found it odd that I'm not having the issue...

https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/google-cast/boadgeojelhgndaghljhdicfkmllpafd

If you look at my 1st post, you will notice that I have the extension installed... and the error it gives... And I don't have vmware installed - I did a fresh re-install of Windows and installed Chrome

I'm running Windows 8.1 and chrome Version 31.0.1650.63 m with no issues. Are you using the "Relaunch Chrome in Windows 8 Mode" of Chrome? I'm not home to try to see if it makes a difference.

Which version of WIndows? 7? 8? 8.1?
Can''t help you much with Win8 but if you go to the control panel and look up your network and sharing center what does it label your network connection?
Home? Work? or Public?
You say you have no security software but Windows comes with it's own security software built in and it could be that the it is blocking the communication you need to see the CCast.
CCast will only work if it is set to HOME as Public blocks all the ports you would need to see and communicate with the CCast.

Are your wireless and wired connections on different subnets? Ie, PC is 192.168.1.x and wireless devices are on 192.168.2.x?
If they're all on the same subnet then Asphyx is probably right and it's the network location (Public/Home/Work) blocking traffic.

Need Plex for Android v3.2.8.109
Google Play ~ download page
Here is a link to the announcement from Plex's Forum.
I saw the forum post about the Android update, but I was wondering about iOS. I got a couple of people to buy the Plex iOS app when it was on sale a few weeks ago with the promise that it would support the Chromecast soon. Do I need to tell them to update?
Also wondering about Plex Web, but I'll just check that when I get home.
Yeah!

Plex web casts fine for me!
Yes, an update is needed for the iOS app to support the Chromecast without Plex Pass.
I can't get Plex Web to cast. Before a cast icon used to show up for me. Now I don't see the cast icon at all.

Not sure if it applies to iOS just the Android app, But it stands to reason that if they made it public for Android iOS is soon to follow.

The issues with PlexWeb seem to be related to the googlecast extension.
Both the original and the beta seems to crash a lt and the Beta even when it was working would not stream to CCast.
[EDIT] Apparently iOS has also got it...
here is a Blog post regarding some new features...
https://blog.plex.tv/2014/03/13/chromecast-free-everyone-great-new-features-ios/
I've tried updating everything: PMS (0.9.9.7.429), Chrome (33.0.1750.149, Plex extension (1.2.21), Chromecast (16041). Definitely no cast icon in Plex Web now, where there used to be one before. Tab casting from the same Chrome window still works.
How is it working for mdamaged?

Are you trying to use your LAN plex web? There is no icon for me there either, but the one at plex.tv has it.

No, I'm using http://plex.tv/web/app. As I said, it had the cast icon previously, but now it's gone.
Update: I turned on my U.S. VPN, and the cast icon re-appeared. But strangely once I turn the VPN off, the cast icon seems to be back permanently. Must have enabled it permanently in the Plex Web settings. Don't know if it's a misguided attempt to be smart with location-specific features, or some unrelated side effect. But whatever, it works now.
Completely separate issue, just an unexpected observation: I thought that since the VPN is only running on my PC, Plex Web wouldn't be able find the Chromecast on my local network since they would be on two separate networks, but I was wrong. Plex Web finds the Chromecast and casts to it just fine even with the VPN turned on. Huh! I wonder how that works?

Update: Got it! It's a bug. Plex seems to be assuming now that if you aren't currently accessing Plex Web from the U.S., then you can't possibly have a Chromecast and there's no need to enable the cast icon.

I bet money that it isn't Plex that is detecting this location but the Chrome Googlecast Extension required to see the icon in PlexWeb.
Good theory, but unlikely I think given that tab casting and other extensions like Videostream didn't have any problem connecting to the Chromecast. It could actually be something completely random like turning on the VPN cleared or bypassed a cache.

Does Videostream require the Googlecast ext to work?
Here is why I suspect the GCast ext...
Both Netflix and YouTube require the GCast Ext to display icons on their Web Based Players.
BOTH have content restrictions based on Location since Netflix has different content in Europe than they have in US (I suspect YouTube may as well).
What would be the best way to ensure Europe doesn't have the ability to send US Netflix content to a CCast via the Web?
Have the GCast Ext remove the Icon and not identify a located CCast when location is detected as not in region!
Otherwise the Website itself would have to do this detection which is difficult.
Granted I could be dead wrong in your case because you do have a very different/complicated VPN going on that can always makes things act funny, but with the soon to be release for UK and I suppose the rest of Europe it stands to reason that Google is trying to insert some regional control over the system and since most of the Web page support requires GCast Ext (coupled with the crashing problems many seem to be having with it,) It makes sense that they are trying to do it all in that extension.
I hope they ditch that ext requirement at some point and simply make and installable app or program that will do this outside of Chrome because the more I use chrome with all it's compatibility issues with things like PayPal the less I like it!
For those that want to know. I was able to successfully update my PMS on my NAS. I also verified cc functions on both android and iOS (some people were not sure)

That seems very unlikely. Both Netflix and Youtube initally access the same url in any country, nothing to do with the Google Cast extension. Content filtering by IP address is applied at their end. I've never seen their cast icons go missing. Plex is neutral and would have no reason to apply any filtering.
I'm going to do a test on another untouched system to see if I can spot exactly what causes the cast icon to first appear in the new Plex Web if it's not the VPN.

Tried setting this up on a Windows machine.
WebSockify and Tight VNC are running on the right ports with no password set but the Chromecast doesn't seem to show the screen when I press the big button.
I dont get any errors.
Would buy if trial works.

D:\websockify>websockify.exe 6080 localhost:5900
here 5900 is port of your VNC server;
if needed, you have to change it according to your VNC server's port;
6080 is the websockify agent port, which you need to input in vnc2cast;

BTW, please check your firewall of windows PC.

Yep, did all that. Websockify showed it received the connection and passed it on but no image appears.
I used the Linux + x11nvc method and that worked without problems.

Is this a better alternative than Chromecast's "Cast your entire screen (experimental)" feature? I tried that for general desktop casting and video playback and the speed was bad even on the 480p setting on a 50/10 mbit wireless connection.
I would definitely buy such an app if it could provide lag-free 720p/1080p video casting to Chromecast.

VNC will never be lag free, and really isn't suitable for video playback. Nor, for that matter, is "cast screen" (which is out of experimental and into the quick-options panel with Android 5).
again.
