[Q] RESTORE Not working! - Xperia Z1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I used the sony backup and restore app on the phone.
I then unlocked my bootloader, this is all on .290 firmware
In the middle of restoring, it reboots.
any ideas? I still have the .semc-fullbackup folder on my SD card, is there any way i can extract those or something? they are not APK's and sony PC companion software saves stuff as one big dbk file so i couldnbt drag it into there... any help would be much appreciated... my messages are very much needed!

i'm guessing sony back and restore app only works with locked bootloader?
try a third party app from playstore, there are some who don't require root.

I relocked the boot loader and still the same thing. Any way to get data out of these files??

Have you tried factory resetting your phone? It works on mine.

Yes I've relocked, reflashed, re updated, tried again, didn't work, unlocked bootloader again, didn't work

try doing a selective restore to get back stuff like contacts and sms etc, at least you will have the important stuff, then just re-install all your apps - settings may also restore some stuff
Backup and restore does not backup your homepage folders and stuff like that, I have an SD card which I use for all my music pics videos and files, you can also copy the contents of your internal SD card/drive to a computer as a backup of those
You can also export your contacts as a VCF to your PC
Unfortunately I can't rely on backups working all the time especially if you are trying to restore a backup to a new version of FW, so I keep and hour a week and do a lot of stuff manually
PC Companion is the best option if trying to restore to newer devices or FW/OS it can often do a conversion on the fly
I've never tried any 3rd party backup app but I'd assume they are more flexible

Can't seem to do a selective restore on the stock sony backup and restore app. You have a way of doing that? I have all my contacts and other stuff were all saved to my google accounjt, its just those SMS's that I need

Maybe try downgrading back to the firmware on which you did the backup and see if the restore function works. If it does restore your data and try to get a backup using Titanium Backup or other software.

Unfortunately I tried that already, seems like a part of the restorenis corrupt? This is really odd. Anyone know how to take data out of the backups?

unfortunately not, I assume you've never done a backup using PCC
There might be some software out there that can extract the contents of the backup or there might be an update to the software at some point if it's not working properly
I was going to suggest rolling back to a previous firmware you never know, always keep a backup using PCC

Nah I didn't start messing with pc companion until my restore didn't work and I was looking for new ways to extract my backup but I guess they're in different formats. I'll keep looking, later I'll open the conversations backup with wordpad and see whats in there... its 50mB though...

[Q] Will I be able to back up saved games before flashing a ROM or wiping my device?

Subject says it all. I'm looking at flashing Cognition but I'm hesitant if I will lose all saved games. I have titanium backup but have only used it to removed at&t bloatware. Can I use that to backup saves? And if so.. how?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
I use titanium backup and it has always restored my Angry Birds' saved games... I was three star-ing everything so I wasn't about to flash and lose it all either HAHA. I say use TiBu and you should be fine, though there are anomalies and I am not responsible for any lost saved games haha
Is there a "how-to" for titanium backup?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
TiBu -> Menu -> Batch -> Backup all user apps
Flash ODIN
Flash new rom (you can click wipe data, it doesnt delete your sd card stuff, in fact, i recommend it)
Install TiBu (if your rom doesn't have it included)
TiBu -> Menu -> Batch -> Restore all apps with data
Click install, install, install. Done.
If you're really anal (which i was for a while), put in an external sd card and copy the titaniumbackup folder from your root folder to the external sd card and then take it out. lol
Ah sweet. So if I'm understanding those steps... the internal sd card is not treated like internal ROM storage that is wiped when you flash your phone?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
No, but if you did, for instance, an Odin 3 one click back to stock, and clicked the master clear button, or if you do a factory reset, etc., that would wipe the internal SD card. So, if your ocd like me, connect to your pc and mount the SD card, and transfer everything on it to the PC hard disk. Then repeat that whenever you're going to flash. Just in case, you know.
Backup all user apps or backup all user apps + system data?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Do all backup stuff. You can later select what to restore. You can go in and just restore browser favorites if you want.

[Q] Upgrading after root

Hi!
Well, I rooted my phone yesterday and I now want to upgrade it from 2.3.3 to 2.3.6 (if there is any diffrent?) I'm going to use ODIN. My question is, do I need to re-root after the upgrade? Will I lose any apps after upgrading?

Moving fast aren't you
Yes there is a difference I'm not sure but usually in speed, battery and features. If it is a stock from then yes you will need to re root as it will probably come with a kernal.
Apps: if you tick repartition and use a pit file then it will factory reset your phone. It do it anyway, I'm not 100%. Apps you can use is,
app list backup: it will make a list of all your apps. For those downloaded from market it will have market links.
SMS backup and restore: self explanatory
titanium backup: Saves the data and app..need root for this. So you may need to gain root again after flashing.
Couple of tips... use a pit and wipe its just less likely to cause conflicts. Make a nandroid backup from recovery. Your internal SD card data will be saved, (where your pictures are usually stored) but its best to copy all that to comp as well

Ah, okay. So you recommend me to factory reset it? Is there an app to backup all the files to my computer? I'm running Titanium backup right now but if I factory reset it, the backup will be gone, right?
Yes I suggest factory reset.
No because that is stored on your partition. Only if you select format SD card or format pictures etc then you will loose it. You can tell titanium back up to move and keep the folder on your external...
To transfer files you just need to connect your phone to PC and use as a mass storage device. It should pop up in my computer as a new removable drive. If not install the drivers via kies.

What about this: Moving almost every app to my external SD-card, using Titanium backup to store all my highscores etc, somehow get the backup to my PC, removing the SD-card and then facotry resetting it? Will my apps still work?
You can try it, im not sure ive never done it.
I would assume that would not work because im sure a file in the system would still need to know that the app is present. If you do a factory reset then that will be deleted. However it is likely that when you re-install the app from the market that it will realise and everything will be back to normal, but then there is also the possibility that the old files will be deleted with the new installation...lol
Endless possibilities. In the end try it but make sure you have a nandroid backup incase something goes wrong.
Use app list backup for the apps and titanium backup for the data backups (high scores, game data etc) However restoring data from TB can cause conflicts which will mean that apps wont work and you'll have force closes.
Good luck let us know how it goes

[Q] Stolen Experia Z need help

I'm not going to dwell on my stolen phone - it's gone and I've come to terms with that
What I do need help with are restore options of the various backups I made of my EZ to a new device
I made PC Companion backup and also a backup using the installed app that came with the phone to the SD card so I have available 2x backups of my Z
I am intending to wait for the Honami and I need to restore contacts and sms and notes to the new device from one of the backups, I didn't sync with google or any other online service as I don't like the exposure so all I have are these two backups
can I use semc-fullbackup on my spare sd card that I made on my Z to a new model phone or will it only restore to the EZ, is there any way of extracting the information in these backups - for example - could I do a backup on PCC on my new phone then swap out the parts of the backup with my old EZ backup - I can see all the files/folders if I rename the PCC backup file to ZIP
any solutions help would be much appreciated
You can restore the backup taken from backup and restore app on honami

that sounds like good news, so the app backup is not model specific like the PCC and can restore on any recent sony android phone with JB
thanks for the info

[Q] Titanium Backup not restoring

Made a backup of my C6906 .518 Xperia Z1 using Titanium Backuo before flashing iHackers V1.1
Now, when I want to restore my data, the app doesn't recognize the backup files, even when they clearly are in the SD card.
Anyone knows what could be wrong?
Goto to preferences and set the backup directory again. You can get titanium to look on your sd card or on the whole device

Ok, now the backup files have disappeared from the SD card, but luckily I made a copy of the backup in my PC.
I'm restoring the data right now, but it seems Titanium got stuck at restoring VLC.
Is that supposed to happen?
No, do a hard reset, and try again, occasionally mine does that, and when trying again it works fine

It got stuck again after hard resetting it for the 1st time, but the 3rd time was the charm.
Thanks a lot!

Sms backup restore help

I have tried to restore my backed up sms I haven't had success using different apps. Is it impossible? I just upgraded to kit kat from being on jb. The messages were backed up in jb. Will it be possible to restore them into a kitkat rom? Or stock kiitkat?
Titanium back ..menu then backup XML I think

Different apps store the backup in different formats, so you can't use one app to make a back up and another app to restore it. You have to restore with the same app you used to back up. (Unfortunately, some apps could use the external SD card in 4.3, but can't in 4.4, so you have to copy the backup folder from the external card to the "internal card" to restore. That can get tricky using the phone itself, so connect the phone to a computer and copy the folder from external [Card] to internal [Phone].)
The app I used can read it but won't restore them. Unfortunately I didn't use titanium backup
I had the same issue with SMS Backup + when I upgraded to KK. The fix for me was getting access to APP OPS. Apparently access was hidden in some recent updates . I found an app in the store that gave me access again. Once there I found SMS backup and gave it permission to write, read, send etc.. Once I did that it backed up just fine.
Hope this helps
