Is it possible to get 4.3 using VPN?
What is your motivation behind this? I'm guessing the answer is NO, if you're thinking what I'm thinking. Please be more descriptive

MM, the thing is that my country is not the list of countries where 4.3 is available so I wonder if it's possible to do an update with VPN, Id try but currently my PC is under serious upgrades so I can't check it

So download a Unbranded Generic FTF from here an flash it via Flashtool..
I want to get it official way Anyway thanks for your responses. It's all about 2 weeks time for the update to come out so... Thanks ..
I know but is not a big deal. But if only 2 week you can wait until then enjoy your phone and Happy Merry Christmas.
Yea 2 weeks is not a long time, same to you friend!
If you want 4.3 the official way then it doesn't matter where your internet connection comes from. Using a VPN to fake your connection from lets say Europe won't change your device information which is for your country and its your device information that will determine when and which update you get - not your internet connection.
So as the previous guy said, have a great christmas and you will get it soon anyway

Are updates dependent on being logged onto AT&T or are they delivered via internet?
I am on a mvno and the phone works fine. But I can't update. IS there an alternate area for downloading updates or does AT&T only update through their system?
What exactly are you trying to update?

But my question remains. I want to find out if I CAN update being on another network besides at&t. When updates are available. For instance, what does a person get who IS on at&t get when they tell it to check for updates. I get "server error".
Will these updates (assuming there will be some) be downloadable from the internet or does one have to be registered with at&t?
To put it to you simply, if you are using an unlocked AT&T device on another carrier. I don't think you will be able to get any AT&T pushed updates for your device. I might be wrong, but I don't think you'd be able to get it running on a carrier other than AT&T with one of their devices.

Well, it works perfectly as a phone and for data and it is locked and not rooted. Since the mvno leases from at&t it works fine.
But I suspect I will never be able to get updates so I am considering selling it unless I can find a way around this. Even though it can now be rooted and it can be unlocked, if the updates are only pushed to registered at&t users and can never be downloaded or sent as regular files, then I am screwed.
ANY other thoughts or ideas, anyone?

I know there are no guarantees in life, but in your best estimate, do you think they will be locked in any way (check to see if it is on AT&T network or some other silly stuff) and that I should be able to use them? Is there a post of the current factory rom anywhere?
I ask all this because I like the Vivid, but I only have 3 days to return it if I am going to.

99.99% sure we will have an RUU available when there is an update. this means it is not dependent on the network updates, but you can install the update from your computer.
100% sure you will see roms on here of the updates....
i wouldnt worry about 'updates' when you are on XDA

Glad to hear this. Thought I was going to have to downgrade to a samsung unlocked.http://media.xda-developers.com/images/icons/icon12.gif
If your rooted, regardless of carrier, you don't need to worry about updates. The updates will be provided by the devs. Whether it be an RUU or incorporated into their ROM update.
Edit: Sorry, I should've provided this info earlier. Major brain-muffin. Lol

I will probably root soon, but I am waiting for a bit of maturity on the customs roms.
Yeah, that'll take some time. The ROMs that ya'll do have, are currently being worked through for bugs and the like. Seeing as how some were already there for the Raider as it was the first to be unlocked. With the Vivid now unlocked, those ROMs that were for the Raider are being updated to allow them to be flashed on the Vivid. In the next few months we should see some more ROMs get produced as more devs come to the Vivid.

2 questions
When will this be available, is it after the next upgraded rom from Sony? As I'm not sure how it works with android. Is it per android version or is it device specific?
Also will it not work based on rooting or will it work with the new locked bootloader exploit, as with that you get to keep your drm keys?
Apologies for probably stupid questions, just coming back from a 3 year break from the the dark side.... iPhone 4 & 4S
It will be when Sky Make it work, if the past is anything to go by when Sony Update to 4.2 it will stop working again!

the JB 4.2 for sony gonna come in late march. maybe 10 days later
it will change kernel and OS so firmware. it will be major update
Last time Sky added a bunch of Devices together when they updated the App so it might be they wait and Add the HTC One and the Galaxy S4. As long as we are 4.2 by then there will be no interruptions.

And will rooting the phone stop sky go working, if I use the locked boot loader method? Or could I just use custom toms with it?
Just skygo didn't work on jail broken devices, was a right pain to get it working in the end! As apple insisted on preventative measures against jail token phones Are sky just as bad on a android?
Yes... Worse the detect rooted unlocked devices in several ways... There was no way to get it working on my note 2 without having stock firmware and kernal
As we do on the z we my be able to use one of the temporary unroot methods
But won't know until sky works in the first place

It's working for me (non rooted) although I have to adjust the brightness each time I go into a program that is showing as it's very dark to start with...

The apps Google play movies and google play magazines were hidden from my device till now! When using Titanium Backup, i found out and enabled them. Does someone know why Sony dis this so? Or is it normal? Am from India, using a sim free version of the device and its in stock .350!

in germany it is enabled, i see "Google Play Movies" in my Apps list with the red film stripe icon.
as i know it has just been enabled a few months ago in germany whereas in the usa it's been going on for over a year now.

I too thought the same! The Play Movies was enabled in India last week and after being rolled out even it wasn't enabled till I did so and the same is wit magazines though they aren't enabled in India yet!
A strange doubt, how does Sony or Google know that the service is available in the respective country and how can they enable it in my device remotely? Can they?

they cannot..
they have to do an ota update that installs it to change anything on your mobile.

Of course they can ,the phone checks what country you're in based on the mobile network and not the SIM-card. .
Think also how the split the updates to the world ,today UK tomorrow Germany etc ..they can see a lot of ways
right, italian journalist went to USA with Xperia Z and when he came back he noticed he had these two apps. That's it

how would they check in which country you are in ? they need an app for that, which calls the home server by itself and tells them where you are ?
ok, sony has some update apps from sony. but do they really check the cell network you are in ? does it use google location based service ?
i don't know if it really does that. normally it's rolled out by serial number.
but without such an app or background service that is continuously sending data to sony or checking once a week, it's not possible for sony to know which device is where in the world.
i bought myself a device from asus from the uk with a UK Serial Number and the WWE Rom Version. i've only and just ever used it in germany, but i only got the UK OTA ROMS and got it when it was rolled out in the UK.
so without an app like sony update that connects periodically with sony servers and collects usage data, it's simply not possible. they OTA Updates are spread by Serial Numbers, that's what i was told by ASUS, and that's what happened with their devices. they don't have an update app like sony and that's why i wrote that in my last post.
does anyone really "know" what the sony update app is doing ? yes, no ? sorry, but if not, it's simply speculation on how the ota updates are rolled out.
imo the update app just checks for updates and submits the serial number of the device. it's a guess. if anyone knows better, please post.

ok, i guess the ip thing is easier to work with than an app reporting the used cell network bandwidth.. whatever, none of us knows what the sony app really does and by what cause the ota's are rolled out.
I think that we go off topic ,Sony Video Unlimited app can see in which country you are and if your area is supported by the app or not ,thats different with hidden google apps ,on the home screen pull your finger from downbar upwards and see another hidden google app starting

From the sounds of it you should never buy a U.S. based phone again. The only way you will get these updates before U.S. carriers through official means is with an international variant. Yeah you can probably find hacked up versions that allow the update early but those usually come with their fair share of issues and most people end up still wiping and placing official updates on anyways when they finally come out. If you for some reason ever thought CDMA would get updates early you are far from knowledgeable about how this stuff works. That said, of the U.S. Carriers Sprint has the best record of updating first. Thank you for another useless rant post showing people what little you know of the smart phone ecosystem.
It's only been like this for like........ EVER!

That part was just my personal opinion. My main goal was to simply share the news / story.
There is only a handful of things that I'm really looking forward to, quick settings and the one lock screen widget that we get from 4.2. The quick settings has been solved thanks to the great ROMs that we have here, and just because we haven't received an update yet doesn't make our phones any less functional than they are.

So i read this morning that there is a new .124 firmware certified. And I'm wondering if the 114 firmware ever got released, but I don't think I've seen to much about it. Seems like there is also no widely accepted root method for 290 either. So what should we be waiting for now? Is the 114 update available yet, maybe through the PC companion or should I be waiting now for 124. Also I'm still on the Chinese firmware (just took the update in PC companion as my phone is from China) and wondering if this has any effect on me getting the ota.
I want to avoid updating anything with flashtool to avoid any potential soft bricking issues so many are experiencing.
In the end I just want stock with root. I'm holding off on anything until I know we will have a single firmware for an extended period. Can anyone clarify what's going on?

you already summed up good. we have new device and new firmware coming in a short period of time. also rooting becomes more difficult because of androids security changes.
actually i also think about going back stock and waiting for stable long term root.
