Now that we can SIM-unlock our Sprint HTC Ones, I've been curious about buying a prepaid a T-Mobile SIM to use when I can't get LTE or decent 3G. My friends on T-Mobile get great HSPA speeds (even when it's just HSPA 14.4) around Chicago, usually in places where my data sucks.
Ideally, I would like to pop a T-Mobile SIM card in my phone, but still receive calls and texts on my Sprint number without setting up some kind of forwarding service. Unfortunately, I suspect that SIM cards don't work in this fashion, though I am hopeful because the removal of the SIM on the Sprint HTC One simply cuts off support for LTE (probably because the only purpose of the SIM card in the Sprint HTC One is to authenticate LTE, but I'm not totally certain).
Alternatively, could I jump between my Sprint service and T-Mobile service if I installed a T-Mobile SIM by using the *#*#4636#*#* menu? Say I chose "EvDo Only," would I connect to Sprint 3g and get calls and texts on my Sprint number and simply select "WCDMA Preferred" when I want to use T-Mobile's HSPA network?

On paper you should be able to connect to HSPA 14.4 on 1900MHz or 2G on 1900MHz. In actuality I don't know but there have been several other threads discussing similar topics. Here's one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2386408
When I tested my T-Mobile sim, once I went into mobile networks and selected it, my phone number and my sms was thru the T-Mobile. So I don't think it will work as data only by default at least not saying that it is not possible, just sharing what I experienced.

Oh, this I know, thanks though. Actually, I was telling someone else just that earlier today:

EDIT: Oh, and the Sprint HTC One supports HSDPA on the 1900/2100 MHz UMTS bands up to 14.4Mbps, which is is slower than a lot of HSPA/HSDPA speeds available now (21.1Mbps and 42.2Mbps), though still more than fast enough for browsing or even streaming.

So you can leave a T-Mobile card in there and just switch between Sprint 3G/voice as well as T-Mo 3G/voice at will? That could be useful; for example, my favorite bar is a total dead zone for Sprint data, but T-Mobile flies. When I know I'm going there, I could pop a T-Mobile SIM, switch to that to check websites and whatnot, but switch it back to periodically check my text messages, right?
That I am not sure. I only tested with a friend's sim card from his nexus 4. With the Sprint sim card removed I was still on sprint cdma but once I went into the available GSM networks and chose T-Mobile, it registered and I was no longer on Sprint at all and it shows GSM icon up where my signal is at. Made a phone call and phone call came thru under my friend's phone number instead of my Sprint number. I'm not sure about sms I did not really played around with it long enough as I was just testing if the unlock really worked.

Hmm... I might just stroll over to a T-Mobile store today, activate/pick up a SIM for $10, and spend another $3 for the daily pay-as-you-go plan. 200MB for $3 isn't bad if you need it in a pinch...

Just an update: I went to a T-Mobile store over lunch to buy a SIM. I was prepared to drop the $10 for the SIM and $3 for the day pass, but it turns out I would need to buy a $10 minimum plan first. >:-\
I'd rather not spend $25 after tax just to see if it works. I'll ask my friend on Sunday if I can try hers. Hopefully I'll be in an area that's covered in 1900/2100MHz.

Once ur SIM unlocked it will work with any SIM card ur just limited on the antennas the phone has. Our phone supports voice 3g and minimal 4g on domestic carriers. The 4g has to be on 1900/2100 mhz in order for this phone to pick it up

Ehh... Not really "4G" since the Sprint HTC One only supports LTE on 1900MHz band 25. T-Mobile uses 1900/2100MHz for HSPA, and the Sprint One only supports 14.4Mbps on those HSPA frequencies (much slower than T-Mobile's phones support).

I see what you're saying, and I think that you're right, but their HSPA network (which they suddenly started calling "4G" strictly for marketing reasons) is significantly slower than most LTE networks. Only phones that would run on HSPA 42.2Mbps would give Sprint phones a run for their money. HSPA was never classified as even being a pre-4G network by the ITU. I think that only WiMAX and LTE hold that distinction. Anything that's HSPA but marketed as "4G" is a lie.

If you're in a Sprint 3g only area then t-mobile if on 1900 hspa is still faster. If you integrated your sprint number with Google voice the you can still get your sprint text messages from the Google voice app and use an app like talkatone or groove ip for voice over ip

So I am not intending to get into a large debate about the HSPA ver of 4G vs the LTE networks other than to say that the top four carriers are not really using LTE to its truest potential because they're limiting backhaul connectivity to keep costs down. So that LTE network you're connected to doesn't have the fastest ethernet connection it should so in many cases it is "possible" for 42MB HSPA network to actually be faster in its actual deployment.

You can sim unlock the Sprint One and use it per this article.
This model of the One supports Sprint's 3G (CDMA 800/850/1900) and LTE (1900 only) networks, along with GSM/EDGE on 850/900/1800/1900 and HSPA 14.4 on the 1900 and 2100MHz bands. That means this phone will roam internationally at 3G speeds. In theory, you could unlock it to work poorly on AT&T's and T-Mobile's networks, but it wouldn't be able to take advantage of fast speeds on either.

I have HTC one unlocked by Sprint and Galaxy S4 unlocked with DFS tool. Neither can get any signal from ATT or Tmobile including all the MVNO.
Lycamobile sim card will show "Roaming" with HTC one, but it keeps dropping. Dev said Sprint blocked MNC/MCC of ATT/Tmobile.
I can get on T-Mobile fine, never tried AT&T but it would also depend on the frequency that is in use in your market. Regarding the Sprint GS4, the unlock method out for it will only unlock for international only, while the unlock on HTC is a true unlock and will work as long as the bands are compatible.

After you've done the unlock for the Sim, can you see the other available networks while the Sprint sim is still installed or do you have to remove the Sprint Sim and install a T-Mobile or ATT sim for it to be able to "see" other networks??

Only one sim slot and haven't tried. In Settings>mobile data>network mode you can select CDMA only and see Sprint 3G with either SIM in, LTE/CDMA will give Sprint voice with other SIM and Sprint 3G and/or LTE data only if Sprint SIM card in. GSM/UMTS only can only be selected if a GSM sim is inserted if I recall correctly. The GSM options including search networks are only available on that mode.
It would be cool if I could use T-Mobile's 3G for data and Sprint's CDMA for voice. Is this possible?

I do not think so not without manually switching the modes on and off. The moment you select the T-Mobile network your voice & phone number will switch to whatever is registered on the T-Mobile sim.

Just received my new HTC One (M8) yesterday. After setting it up and thinking everything was good to go. I made a phone call and tried to look up something on the internet. The page didn't pull up and when I looked at the status bar I noticed that the LTE symbol was gone. I looked in setting and my mobile data was on but showing disconnected. Has anyone else not be able to use voice and data together?

That's been like since the Evo 4G LTE days.
From s4gru dot com (can't post link for being too much of a noob on this site still)
"In previous Sprint LTE phones, when a device was in Sprint LTE coverage it would park in both the LTE and CDMA Sprint networks at the same time. When a voice call came in, it would just go straight through to the device. And signal to the LTE network would be maintained the whole time while the call was active.
In contrast, a Sprint Triband LTE device can only stay on one technology at a time. CDMA or LTE, not both. So when a Sprint LTE Triband device is in Sprint LTE coverage it parks only in LTE. And doing so means it cannot transmit calls without Circuit Switched Fallback (CSFB) on the network side. CSFB and eCSFB (Enhanced Circuit Switched Fallback) are network controls that will allow a single mode/single path network to operate in two modes, both CDMA and LTE.
Here is how it works in the simplest way I can describe. When your Triband LTE device has an LTE signal, it cannot receive or make calls on its own. It is just using LTE data happily. However, what if someone calls you? How does it get through the CDMA network to your device? Via CSFB.
When the Sprint network tries to forward a call to your device but cannot see it via CDMA, it then checks for an LTE connection to your device. If it sees one, it tells your device to disconnect from LTE for a moment and reconnect to CDMA. Your device then jumps over to take the call on Sprint CDMA and the LTE session is interrupted. This happens very fast and seamlessly. Except for the loss of data availability. If you receive a text, the Sprint network is able to route it to your device via LTE."
This is why I tried to upgrade from the EVO 4G to the EVO 4G LTE recently, I was trying to get a phone that handled LTE and had SVLTE, but it didn't work out reception-wise in my area, so bit the bullet and got the M8, knowing that if I use it for tethering will have to figure out if there is a way to force it to stay in LTE and have phone calls go straight to voice mail.

Yes that's exactly what it means. After discussing this on various forums it seems that no new phones on Sprint will be able to do voice and data simultaneously. The tri-band doesn't all these phones to operate on both the LTE band and the CDMA band at the same time. I'm trying to decide now if I'm going to return my M8 and switch to T-Mobile. Then purchase it from them.
this may be a deal breaker for me as well. i have been paying for wimax wifi untill lte deployed in my area... that the phone i want wont allow the vlte is very disapointing.
I thought I heard a while ago that is a thing of the past. GS3 (and apparently the Evo 4G lte) was the last to be able to do that. They removed that feature from the S4, and any device from that point on iirc. Not 100% on all that, but I know I read something like that before.
Never investigated as to why, but the only thing I can think of would be for safety reasons. Its bad enough that people text and drive, and I can just imagine how many would be driving, on the phone, and texting, or trying to browse the web.
Certainly a feature I will miss though, coming from an S3. Neither my wife nor mom want to upgrade because they don't want to lose that capability.

Fair enough. I wasn't 100% sure, I just remember seeing somewhere that they were doing away with that capability at some point. It's stupid though either way. There's been plenty of times while talking about something on the phone where I've said "hold on, I'll Google it", or had the other person send me a picture of something. Will miss that feature.

For clarity, please confirm is my understanding is true: this issue will be fixed in time, but we just don't know when - and Sprint is being shady about it.
I am an AT&T customer on the old Skyrocket. Long overdue for an upgrade, and I've been leaning toward switching to Sprint and getting the m8 ('real' unlimited data is a major factor). Now I'm weighing this issue, deciding whether it's significant enough to not make the switch after all.

No, this is not really an “issue” since it’s not a feature that’s performing improperly. SVDO and SVLTE (being able to hold a call while on 3G or LTE, respectively) is simply not possible due to the new antenna design.
On the EVO 4G LTE, SVDO and SVLTE were both possible, but that phone wasn’t the greatest RF performer. On the One M7, SVLTE was still possible, but SVDO was removed to help offset RF fade so that the signal could be improved. I suspect that the antenna design was changed again on the M8 to further increase performance, but at the cost of only being able to do voice OR data at any given time. Also, there appears to be a network limitation with tri-band LTE devices. See the post from rhe12:

Apparently in a theoretical future, when Sprint rolls out voice over LTE, this issue would, well, not be an issue anymore.
"Schlageter said the tri-mode LTE smartphones will be able to handle simultaneous voice and LTE data when Sprint deploys Voice over LTE. She noted Sprint has not yet set a timetable for when that will happen."

Thanks for the replies. Seems like a usability oversight (or just bad decision) to me. Are other carriers able to support SVLTE or SVDO on Triband LTE devices or is this a device constraint?
Thinking about it, I only occasionally use data and voice at the same time so this might be more of a minor irritation to me. I have a question for those you who have experience with this - Is there any noticeable lag when CSFB occurs for either user (caller/receiver)?
Also, the language in the spokeswoman's replies in that article is frustrating.

I wouldn’t say it’s an “oversight,” either. I would say it’s more of a limitation of the compromise between RF performance and features. Sprint’s M8 variant will have access to more LTE bands in more areas than any of the other carriers. I could be wrong, but I suspect that the trade-off for SVLTE has something to do with the fact that the Sprint M8 will be switching between LTE bands more often than other carriers’ variants. Let’s take a look:
For the One M8, these are the LTE frequencies that each carrier-specific phone has the radio/antenna for:
AT&T: 700/850/AWS/1800/1900/2600 MHz
Sprint: FDD 800/1900 MHz , TDD 2600 MHz
Verizon: 700/AWS/1800/2600 MHz
TMUS: 700/AWS MHz

As it currently stands, these are the LTE frequencies the above carriers have deployed or will soon deploy:

This means that only the AT&T and Sprint versions can use 3 LTE bands on their respective networks. However, since only Sprint will have all 3 bands available nationwide, I suspect that there might be something network-related which would allow the AT&T model to still allow SVLTE, but again, I could be wrong. I think I’ll take this to S4GRU.com to fact-check.
Just received my unlocked Z3 Compact from Handtec. Data wasn't working so I inputted the APNs for my carrier (AT&T).
Data is working now, but I'm not sure if I'm getting LTE or not. The network icon shows '4G' above it, but not LTE. The manual says that it should show 'LTE', but it also doesn't even list a 4G icon.
Can anyone who definitely has LTE let me know what icon they're seeing? Thanks!
Go to settings, About Phone, Status and see if it shows you are connected to LTE. That's where it is on my Moto X so it should be close to the same but maybe named differently.
Also are you in an area that you had LTE service before? I see 4G in areas then 4G LTE in others.

4G is LTE. It displays H+ for HSPA. I just had to have ATT fix my IMEI for LTE since I was only getting H+ before.

Thanks. It just says '4G' under 'Mobile Network Type'

Cool. Good to know, thanks.
In some customizations (e.g. UK) it's called 4G while in others (e.g. German) they named it LTE. Don't ask me why, but I noticed that while playing a bit around with the "Customized UK build .105" on my otherwise "Customized DE build .98".
I always thought that H+ was HSPA + (obviously), that 4G was LTE, but just 'slow' LTE, and that 4G LTE was 'high speed' LTE when you have a really good connection. Not sure though.

No no, here 4G means LTE, no difference over here.
Technically, only to add a bit confusion, LTE -whereas a 4th Generation network- is a 3.9G-Standard (extention to UMTS). LTE-Advanced, however, is (or will be) of 4G-Standard. :silly:
I think you should see LTE as well if in the US. One way to tell is to do a speed test, there are also apps in the market that can give you more info on your network connection.
My Moto X shows 4G and 4G LTE on At&t.

Do you know what AT&T changed to fix the issue? I'm having the same issue (HSPA+), but with no resolution. Here are my specifics (posted in another thread): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=55695219&postcount=4

All I did to resolve this was have the att rep change the imei on my phone and reboot. That's it. Hope you can get a rep that knows what they're doing!

The call reps keep confirming that my Lumia 925 IMEI, an LTE phone, is registered correctly. Nothing changes, however, regardless of reboots, etc.. What device do you see in your My Account settings on AT&T's site? I keep seeing a silhouette of a flip phone. I'm wondering if I need to activate my nano sim in an LTE device they recognized or something (it doesn't fit in the Lumia 925).
Issue resolved!
Bottom line...do not give these clowns your Xperia IMEI number.
When they entered the IMEI number it flipped my data plan from a grandfathered unlimited plan to a pay-per-use plan with no LTE (why they couldn't figures this out last night, it beats me). He was talking about my wife's plan and her unlimited data. I then noted "mine is unlimited too" and then said it wasn't. You can only imagine how things went from there.
The unrecognized IMEI number automatically switched me off of my plan.
They have me on a temporary 3GB plan, as the support rep couldn't get me back on the unlimited plan. They have to send the change to their back office team and it will take a week to get it back.
My phone now has the 4G icon versus H+.

Thanks!

Is that the stock status bar icon for battery and 4g? Or are you modded already?
If stock, those are the best stock icons I've ever seen besides pure AOSP!

I hate to be daft here, but I feel like the answers are all a tad ambiguous.
Are people saying there for sure is no LTE icon for this phone? That having the 4G icon show is the same thing as having the LTE icon show?
I ask only because I have the 4G icon but I am getting like 1-3Mbps download speeds (using the speedtest app). I feel like I should be getting much higher speeds if it says 4G. I tested in the heart of downtown Seattle and in the outskirts of Seattle.
Any assistance would be great.

Obviously there's something wrong with those speeds but from what I know - yes 4G is LTE. This is because HSPA+/DCHSPA was never marketed as 4G in the UK so there had never been a confusion about what 4G is - it has always been LTE.
Ah, was wondering why they would scrap the LTE icon, my S4 had 4G and LTE icons.
What DL/Upload speeds are people in the US getting with 4G?
Just got 7/3.85 just now... which still seems way too low for 4G. Verified that my APN settings were correct.
I got 20 down in "4G" yesterday (no LTE icon). All good

Are you using the SIM from an LTE phone or did you get a new one and give them your IMEI? The Z3c isn't going to be in any US carriers system so if you give them the IMEI you will not get LTE. Give them the IMEI from an LTE phone or just swap your SIM from one LTE on me to the Z3c.
I also think unless its a US sold phone you will not see the LTE icon even if getting a LTE signal in the US.

So how would one go about finding a 'fake' iemi number? I've read the 'use a display model' method. Any others?
If you use your t-mobile note 4 on AT&T, do me a favor and tell me if your data goes to HSPA+ while on a call. Mine is switching from LTE to HSPA+ anytime I am on a call...

Yeah its supposed to do that.
It's supposed to switch from LTE to HSPA+?? My note 3 never did that.

I remember reading somewhere it's supposed to happen because it shows the real connection. Then again I could've misread but I'm pretty sure it's supposed to
Funny my note 3 prior to volte upgrade would show hspa when making calls but after update its like my note 4. Shows LTE symbol also when making calls.
