With the introduction of the Motorola Droid next week, our G1 is about to lose its status as the flagship android device. As much as it pains me to admit it, the Droid has us beat in every way I can imagine. With the drama surrounding development these days, and the semi-stalled development of Hero and Blur (though our devs are still awesome and plugging away) drivers for Bluetooth, Wifi, and GPS across various ROMs. What do you think? Are we about to migrate to a new device as the standard? How long will we last here?
My only issue is.. i HATE verizon.. and i like t-mobile..
So that leaves me out for this phone....
WRONG.. GUESS AGAIN

This phone will most likely steal the Dream's thunder... but development on the dream is so far in that
as far as modding, devving, and customization goes... it will take the droid quite a bit of time to catch up with the dream

I'd like to think that people will unite around Android 2.0, and UIs like Hero and Motoblur will be relegated to widgets that can run on any framework. That would be great for the G1.

Im right next to ya on that one. Hero has insane widgets, and motoblur.. well i haven't even tried it because it doesn't even seem enticing to me. If android 2.0 finds a way to collaborate all these feature... it would be.. The ultimate android build
All that said, if that GSM Droid has a 1700 Mhz band... I'll be all over it.

T-Mobile's 3G band.
you just taught me something new!
as long as there are still dumps being released, i dont think that people will ever stop developing for the g1. look at the other forums on here for old ass winmo phones. they are still developing for those phones, and some of them are at LEAST 5 years old. g1 is still only a baby.
gonna have to look at gettin an unlocked version , who knows when rogers will get the droid , and how many features they will lock , and how much of a premium they will charge

Bad news, no 1700 Mhz band. No 3G Droid for T-Mobile.
On the somewhat brighter side, The behold 2 has a confirmed Tegra chip in it. THAT will be nice. But no qwerty.
I think there will be a big push for phones with bigger screens and faster specs which will leave the G1 in the dust. The difference with most of those other WinMo phones is that they were the best of the best for their generation, the G1 was the first and will quickly be replaced.
The G1 will always get ports and stuff, but look at the Hero ports to the G1, its VERY close in specs and still runs like crap compared to stock OS. True it will get better with new advances but it will always be playing catchup.
Motorola got it so right with the Droid and then royally screwed it up with the Milestone by locking down it's bootloader, what are the odds with the new Droid X?
On a slight off topic speculation, same question for the Droid 2?

Taking into account the number of previous models listed above, I'd say it's a 50/50 shot
cross my fingers, hope to die, stick a needle in my eye... lol
i can almost bet that the bootloader is locked. motorola said a few months back all their future phones will have locked bootloaders. just hope it can be hacked like the milestone, but desnt take as long.

This is the only thing that would make me return the Droid X. As far as I know, the Milestone bootloader still hasn't been cracked, and months on from its release, it's not looking that likely. I'm using the first 30 days to see if I can put custom roms on there or not -- if I can't, I'll go return it and wait for a better phone.
just read and no the milestone bootloader hasnt been unlocked. just hope they dont lock down this bootloader if they do i will keep my droid around for hacking perposes
If I cant put custom roms on this phone, I will not be getting it.
we may have to wait and see if their going to lock it down. i pray not, i want to keep custom roms but would rather overclock and keep the stock usablility or just theme my phone
From what I've heard, the bootloader is signed. Does anybody know if there's been any progress on the Milestone with the kexec method?

That's a bit of a bummer, but I mean the phone is just plainly better than an Evo. Even if it can't flash roms, having root inside the OS is still ok. I mean that way we can do wifi tethering and stuff like that.
What really impresses me from this phone is the GPU. The Evo's sucks.

Yeah, the GPU in this is really helping to sell me on it. TBH I don't mind not having custom ROMs (Android custom ROM's aren't nearly as necessary as WinMo custom ROMs IMO), but I really want to be able to overclock, since hopefully this will be able to get up to 1.2-1.3GHz, at least.

I am sure it can do those frequencies provided someone hacks the bootloader. But I have a feeling even if the snapdragon is at 1.2ghz it probably is equal to the Droid x's 1ghz OMAP proc.
It's just a better phone, it just has a bit odd stylistically, thank goodness the front looks smexy.
I wish Froyo would come out to it earlier, but it's not a must. (I want Flash )
With all the competition I can't see myself picking this up with a locked boot loader. Development efforts will seriously be non existent. Foolish on motorola's part. They gain nothing by locking it and ultimately lose sales.
Can someone clarify: an earlier poster said that the bootloader had been accessed, but the rest of the posts are going along the lines that the bootloader is NOT unlocked...
does anyone have any clarity for this one
timing?
Using the Droid as an example anyone remember how long it took "them" to figure out whether the bootloader was locked? Trying to figure out if this will be determined before I trying to pick one up on the 15th.
Wow this has been eye opening. I have been a long time winmo user and love flashing ROM's. I'm about to switch to verizon and was already sold on the X but after reading about the locked boot loader I think I'll stick with HTC devices, or at least the original moto droid. This will be a deal breaker sorry moto
There is a person at androidforums who has a Droid X. He is doing a Q&A right now. He has been asked twice (once by me) if the bootloader is locked or not. He is unsure how to check this (as am I). Figured someone here may be able to help him out. Since I cannot post links the thread is "Droid X in my hands on monday". Hopefully something good will come out of this.

All Winmo / HTC phones are locked at the beginning and you get a great unlocker usually from Olipro. It usually takes a month or so for this to happen. Not sure why you would think an Android device would be different or why this would be a deal breaker for you. I am sure there will be someone who knows enough about the bootloader who will figure out how to unlock it.

I would feel more at ease if the precedence set by the milestone didn't exist...
Hello guys,I am kinda sick of my milestone,it's a good phone but i hate those 256mb ram,it sometimes freaks me out,and now i consider changing my milestone for a Orange san francisco(the one with OLED display),because of it's 512mb ram.I love the qwerty of the ms,and the overclock posibilities but can't stand the locked bootloader and the ram, what do you think ,should i change it for the san francisco?
Wait for SE Arc
If like me you don't have a budget for that, get your self x10.
It will get official genger, and bootloader will be unlocked for advance developers

I think you should think thoroughly about what it will be like to lose the qwerty keyboard ... if you come to the conclusion: hey, I can type pretty well with the on-screen-keyboard, you will be happy with the orange sf ...

I am in a period when i cannot afford such an expensive device, and i cannot have it with a new contract because i just resigned my contract witout having a new phone. And desire Z seems like a toy to me,too plastic and vulnerable,i love milestone's build quality and desire z is not really what i would prefer.
Well, keyboard droids are rare nowadays... Word is that Milestone 3 is about to be announced and some ppl say it will have a Dual Core SOC While others say it will have a 1.3GHz Single Core SOC. Either way, it will have at least 512MB of RAM which is the same ammount in Milestone 2, but, I would expect more RAM in it.
If you like keyboards to play emulators (this is the major reason I love my milestone, gamegripper FTW), Xperia Play seems reasonable and has 400MB of free ram (512 total) and also will be able to play Playstation One games...
If the main reason you wanna have a keyboard is to type messages, then, Desire Z seems a reasonable choice.
For now, there aren't any devices with stronge build like milestone and with beter performance (except milestone2...maybe???)
Hi all
Just a quick one I am running vjraider I know its rooted but the hboot says its s on. Is this normal? How to s off?
Sent from my HTC Raider 4G using XDA Premium App
you cannot get s off, this is why we need to flash the kernal seperate to the rom, nobody has achieved s-off yet
Ok.
Thanks for the quick reply.
I kinda figured that from reading on here, but its nice to have it confirmed.
I came from a DHD and that thing seemed easy to develop. Not that I can develop roms. But seemed like there were heaps of different ones and heaps of developers.
Sent from my HTC Raider 4G using XDA Premium App
This phone has had many stumbling blocks,
first it has 3 versions, the Vivid on at&t, and the Raider are pretty much identical but they have slighty differing hboots so the ICS release only works for the vivid on at&t, then there is the Velocity on Telstra in Australia which again is pretty much identical except there are slight changes to the CPU, its the same cpu, but the default clockspeed is 1.5Ghtz and the others have 1.2Ghtz... they are all technically the "HTC Holiday" but with slight differences.
Second, the bootloader was locked for a long time
Third we have no s-off
and fourth, a bunch of angry people chased all our devs off when they had some problems flashing some of the roms.
So yeah uphill battle It's getting better now though
That's a great summary of our Vivid forum lol. Its' still the best phone I've ever owned regardless of the lack of development compared to other phones.
yes i agree that is a very good summary of whats happened, i have only had mine for a week, that was when the bomb went off.
this is off topic but in all the rom threads I have read it clearly says what the risks are the fact that you are here and download these roms means you are ok with the consequences.
Its always rosy when they work.
Yeah, people just don't read and I have noticed become very self important like nothing is their fault and they are demanding everything.
I am always so damn cautious, I'm not going near ICS until Telstra release it
Did you see telstra released it today.
Sent from my HTC Raider 4G using XDA Premium App
Speaking of idiots taking risks without understanding them first...

yes thats the fast boot command to re-lock you your bootloader , once done it will say "re-locked"
So i'm not very informed on what's going on here but, is there any dev that is working on getting the S-OFF for the One?
There are probably devs working on it behind the scenes but I'm not sure which devs have worked towards S-Off before.
mmmh maybe xmoo, who also worked on the One x... well, we'll see... however this is going to happen cause Qualcomm HTC devices have always been S-OFFed
I did hear from someone that codeworkx would be working towards it when he gets the One but no idea how true that is.
I know he's a great dev but I don't think he's ever delved into anything like this before.
yeah, pretty hard stuff, but someone will succeed in it
S-OFF can only be done by reverse engineering hboot needs to be disassembled into ASM to crack it so it's pretty hard work. I myself has proper knowledge but I don't wanna take a risk as this could permanently brick a device. To think that it's pretty hard getting this device internationally.
Sent from my myTouch 4G Slide using xda app-developers app
S-off was achieved for Evo LTE and one X and one x + using facepalm and other methods by team unlimited. I would think you guys will get it before long.

I echo that......it shouldn't be too long as it's a Qualcomm device. However you have to bear in mind that not too many people have the device yet, we're the lucky ones!
Also, I wouldn't actually get my hopes up with xmoo - previous experience with my HOX tells me that....
