Mhl is quite bad, works very laggy, which is super anoying, z1 is a beast, no reason for thia to happen, my old Nokia n8 qith a single 600mhz cpu had flawless hdmi output...

Replacement how should it makes a difference? The cable.can't be that bad as to cause delay because the signal moces too slow through it.

I had problems with a stupid USB OTG Made in China so everything is possible. I will try the original one, just in case to be sure.

Hi developers, I'm thinking about buying this phone but I have some questions to you who own a MHL HDMI adapter for Xperia Z1.
1) The phone uses MHL 1.0 or 2.0 ?
2) At what frequency works the HDMI ? 30Hz or 60Hz ?
3) is the output to TV laggy / delayed ? if yes, how much? (screen from my SGS 2 is delayed by about 500ms what I feel acceptable for movies/surfing but bad for work)
Thank you very much for answers.

I used 2 different MHL adapters. One was from Rocket Fish and the other was just a generic type MHL Adapter which just had MHL apapter written on it. The Rocket Fish one was $9.99 and the generic no brand one was $24.99 . The Rocket Fish one performed slightly better. I played Rayman games on MHL to my Sony 60" LED HDTV and it was flawless no lag, tried Asphalt 8 and was great, tried Modern Combat 4 and I had major lag, slowness to it. Web browsing and playing around the interface was good, you can tell it has a slight lag but I think it was great really.
I think theres an option in the developer options to display the 2nd display to 720P and Im sure that would improve speed a bit.
Go for the Rocket Fish MHL adapter. It worked great for me except for the very intensive game Modern Combat 4.

I believe this video will answer your question. Seems like it's the adaptor that matters in terms of what frequency it outputs and not about the device. I hope this helps.

The original stock adapter it's always a good choice to make it work right.

I just checked some of the response from that youtube video and the creator of that video did say it won't work with Xperia z1. Thats weird because I thought the Galaxy S3 also had a 5 pin (1.0) MHL and it worked. I am wondering why it won't work with the xperia z1 that is also 5 micro usb. I already ordered a Samsung MHL 2.0 from my local NCIX. I should have it in the next few days. I will report back.

i think it's a global problem... hdmi 1 or 2 or whatever just means if hdmi will work or won't.
once it's working it should run the same on every adapter...
untill i see a video of z1 working flawlessly with a specific hdmi adapter i'm not convinced.

This piece of crap can't even output 1080p. I went to the service menu using *#*#test#*#* (replace test with corresponding numbers) and there was select resolution option. Of course it said N/A even though I had the ability to choose the resolution which didn't change anything.
I could tell a small lag in GTA San Andreas + Sometimes it even lagged (for an eye-blind, but still) in the plain UI doing nothing. I also tried DTS and Dolby Digital plus. Both worked in stereo.
Weird thing is that even though I was doing basic stuff like chrome etc it didn't charge using the stock charger and cable if connected to this adapter. HDMI cable was not plugged to the adapter at all. I tried to use it as a charger pass through. With HDMI not plugged in the phone said smartconnect: charger so it's the adapter itself.
Stay away from this one for sure!
Will try this rocket sth one.

I won't get it until after the weekend, but I will remember you guys are waiting

I bought a cheapo eBay version, from here: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1080P-Mini-Micro-USB-MHL-to-HDMI-Adapter-Cable-150mm-NEW-/200912649225
Lag is non-existent, or at least not easily noticeable, when scrolling through screens or websites. I haven't tried playing games but I don't see a problem. Have heard a lot of problems with these adapters, but I lucked out and mine works with no issues.
The specs for even MHL 1.0 say that it supports 60hz 1080p; in fact the only difference I could find in v2.0 was 900mAh charging, versus 500mAh in v1.0, and some kind of Samsung compatibility improvement. Samsung uses 11-pin microUSB port, and requires a specific USB-MHL adapter (or a tip adapter, 5-to-11 pin).

[HACK] Hardware HDMI/MicroSD Hack? Unused Pins/Connectors

HI! i've found some pics of the nexus 7 motherboard and some connectors seems to be unused... If you look at the "con1" (the one used for micro usb connection) it has 22 pins 0_o. Maybe we can find a hardware hack =D
More images here
We could do a "simple" (dangerous) test: HDMI has a hot plug detection pin, the only way to check is provide one pin with +5v dc and check if any other pin sends a ddc query.... but how can we find the hotplug pin (if there's any)?

From the teardown it was pretty clear there was space for the rear camera as well as HDMI.
The IO presenters were using units with HDMI, so it was probably the same motherboard, populated.
You would have to be a hard-core hacker to want toi add your own HDMI. No idea what is missing beside header and connector. Probably not as bad as adding MHL
I am happy living without HDMI.
Maybe I will never use the hdmi connector but hacking electronical things when i have to hack biological ones every day is a nice way to spend the time xD

Can't back it up right now but will frantically google to find it.. But I remember reading that it had the hardware for mhl but currently not enable in software?
but just tested my jellybeaned gnex and that works fine with mhl so not sure how much truth there is to that.
I can vouch for the photo of a Nexus 7 with an HDMI port, as well as a comment from a presenter that the special units they were using for presentations had HDMI.
No, I can not provide any links. That was thousands of pages ago...
I do not believe the Nexus 7 has the MHL chip, or any provision for it. Asus is not listed as a MHL provider.
Samsung (Nexus) is a MHL provider, so the hardware there would not be a surprise.
In that teardown review (where the OP got that image, I believe), they mistakenly said it supported HDMI out and included a picture of the HDMI cable from the nexus Q. They later retracted that comment.
That might be the source of the confusion.
There was at least one actual picture of a Nexus 7 with an HDMI port on the bottom.
I think a reviewer got their hands on a presenter's unit.
The image you're looking for is in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1736916
The internel dev versions (the ones used for presentations) had mini hdmi.
So, it does make sense that theres space on the board.
Thank you for that picture link! I searched everywhere for that...
At least that is one less reason to think I have lost my mind...
I'd love to be able to solder on an sdcard slot, if that's all that's needed. It's generally pretty easy to solder to headers if you're careful about it.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
From the teardown, I don't recall seeing any space for an SD card.
Rear camera - yes, HDMI - yes, but not SD Card.
I could be mistaken...
Also, the external storage problem has been pretty much solved with a USB OTG cable and stickmount.
we could solder a slod for an additional sd card... there's enaught space to fit in a sd card without "external" access.

we're counting pins and waiting for more info =P
look here: http://guide-images.ifixit.net/igi/KjNsrjlvHZdFWEGF.huge
we have 14 free pins and an hdmi data connection requires only 12 wires + 5v + grnd.
i'm looking for someone who can do some simple tests on the unused pins.
when i will have the nexus 7 i'll do it by myself at uni but maybe someone who have the I/O version now could do something meantime.
Looks pretty interesting to me hope we cram a sd card In there somewhere.

Aftermarket Dock (using POGO). Would you Kickstart?

So I am usually a lurker on XDA, but I thought I'd get the community's thoughts. I'm a fellow Nexus 7 owner and I want a dock that uses the pogo pins. I'm tired of waiting for ASUS and I also happen to be a mechanical engineer that works in the consumer electronics industry. So, I've mocked up my own design. It's similar to the ASUS design and will have USB charging and audio out. The only way I could bring it to market is Kickstarter.
Before I go through that much effort (Kickstarter has revised its approval process) I want to gauge demand. The sale price would be $30. I've made a poll below to streamline things, but feel free to add comments. Rendered concept below. I am also considering adding stereo RCA outputs as well. Would you want that?

|UPDATE 1|
Thanks everyone for the feedback! I'm still in the early design phase so feedback helps. To address the request for speakers: at this point it's not something I'm looking to add. It adds cost, development time and complexity. Depending on how well things go if I put it on Kickstarter, a speaker option may be considered. Also, now that I've seen there is some interest, I refined the design slightly to slim it up. See below:
Would adding some sort of HDMI out be too complicated or difficult?

Unfortunately, the Nexus 7 doesn't have any method of outputting an HDMI signal. In fact, the pogo pins do not allow for data, just audio and charging.

well, if you WANT to people buy your dock, putt 2 USB's. i would buy a dock, but a dock like this needs a USB ports. so everybody could use mouses, keyboards or harddrives.

I would love to, but the pogo pins do not support USB OTG (needed for keyboards, usb drives, etc.) That would require connecting to the micro-USB port. Also, as of now, charging while using OTG is almost non-functional. It may be possible with the Nexus 10 (6 pin pogo) but not the 7.
I'd buy it if available on Europe

Samsung Multi-Media Dock (note II)

So I recently bought the Samsung Multi-Media dock.
I've seen a few reviews and un-boxing's but can't seem to find any videos on people showing the full capabilities.
I also noticed, that when everything was plugged in, the dock wouldn't read any storage devices (pendrives and HDD). Would anyone know the problem? or what I have to do.
Thanks in advanced.
Also if anyone knows of good videos showing what it can do etc.. or record what it can do

Multimedia dock is just for charging and audio out.
Smart dock is for otg, hdmi out and charging.

You can probably call up samsung and send them the serial number to make sure it's real or not.
If it's the real one, I keep reading all over the forums that the format of the hdd/pen drives might be the issue. If you do a search I'm sure you'll find them. This was usually when people were buying the 64GBs cards and had to reformat them to get them to work. I'm assuming it might be a similar issue.

It works fine for me with wired Mouse and Keyboard
I even noticed that if you attach the mouse before and the plug your notes in it will automatically rotate your screen
Regarding the HDD and Pen drive I didn't try it yet but it will probably not be able to read the ntfs partitions but fat and exFat must work fine

Tv reports 1080/30p. Using Maxthon browser in full screen mode and set for smallest letters is a pleasure using on bigger screen. Most (all?) applications are not optimized to utilize higher resolution output and simply mirror phone screen. Netflix app has a problem with smart dock. When video is played in full screen mode - hdmi is formated 4:3 instead 16:9. Other video apps output in correct ratio.

Usb-c to HDMI adapter.

Hey everyone and Happy Thanksgiving.
I purchased several usb-c to HDMI adapters from Amazon. All of them look the same but apparently the internals are not. I plugged all three into the Huawei Super Charge brick the 5a USB cable and into the same monitor and mouse. 2 would drain my M10 LCD about 20% in about an hour. The other would only drain the phone about 3% in an hour. So if you hook up to your monitor a lot might want to try this one.https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B072JC7RBB/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
The others looked the same but different color and different name. One was a Mokin (black)and the other was Elnath(silver). On all three the phone only shows one lightning bolt.
Also it might be me but the response time for the good one seems faster than the other two.
I got an el cheapo on Ebay from China and it charges my phone while plugged in.

disclaimer: I am no way affiliated to the seller so don't blame if it doesn't work or the seller sends you something else. Happened to me before but I am willing to take the risk given the low price. Some even give you a full refund if they sell you crap. The tip is to make sure that the seller has good ratings so they would want to maintain their ratings. Be careful of sellers that boost their own positive ratings. Just check how many negative ones they got. A few is normal but too many and you can forget about buying from them. Another tip is to send the seller a message before buying and see how fast the response is.

Yes, but it's slowly charging, not sure why though.
I'm afraid to try my MBP's charger, it's a 60 watt, me thinks.
I'm guessing it's because the adapter doesn't deliver as much power as the wall wart normally would.

How do you get it to charge? What do you have the USB power settings set to?

Samsung Dex low quality apps issue

Hopefully this isn't mentioned some where else, tried searching around. But, I'm using note 9 with hdmi, a lot of games and even some apps look low quality. From what I can tell the UI of Dex looks normal and a few others things like web browser stuff. Even a small handful of games appear to run with no quality issues, and most non-game apps. But when I switch to screen mirroring, everything looks perfect, so I don't get the issue. I also had an extra question about screen mirroring, is there a way I can have the screen off or show all black? That way I can play games on my monitor without leaving the screen on? Let me know if y'all need any example images of games looking low quality, to be clear, a game will look low quality even "full screen" in dex while in screen mirror it looks extremely sharp and high quality like it's on the phone screen itself.
Hi
What type of USB-C to HDMI adapter you have?
If it is not Samsung DEX then picture quality is poor, by purpose. Samsung wants you to buy/use their adapter.
I have few cables/adapters but full resolution works only with DEX stand I bought. It was made for Note 8.
Screen mirroring works with any cable.
Go to shop and test...
My very old Samsung S2 and even Note 3 accepts any adapter.
Good luck.

I have the official Samsung DeX cable and everything looks fine. Granted I don't play games on it but other stuff is great. I'll try running a game later and see how it is.

Seems from both comments, official dex cable will be needed. My monitor is 1080p, shows its on 1080p in settings, picture is full screen. Browser looks normal, videos like youtube play what appears to be perfect quality, which is why im so confused.
Could you try a game like pokemon masters ex? Its one of the ones thatll show normal size, but looks low quality, very pixely, then switch to mirroring to see if theres a difference? Cause if i switch to mirroring it looks how it should on my 1080p monitor.
Thanks for the help so far. If swapping adapter is the solution then awesome, i really want to use dex and like using it at the same time haha.
Edit-- What type of USB-C to HDMI adapter you have?
Its an 8 in 1 hub from amazon and brand is bqypower, goofy name but yeah. It has hdmi and vga out, tried both and got the same results.

I have the official Samsung DeX cable: https://www.jarcomputers.com/Samsung-DeX-Cable_prod_CABPTSAMSUNGEEI3100FBEGWW.html
I tried 3 games that I have on my phone and ran them both in DeX mode and in Screen Mirroring via the cable. Below are screenshots of the DeX mode running these games. Obviously I couldn't take pictures while in Screen Mirroring but the quality was the same in both. My phone is set to FHD+ and my TV has a FHD resolution screen as well.
Like on 8 ball, in Dex mode it looks rough and pixely. Then when I switch to screen mirroring it looks a lot better, even compared to it on Dex in full screen. Is this really because of the cable not being from samsung? Here's an image of the balls in full screen on dex. Just seems weird how it looks better in mirroring compared to dex on the same cable. Even the mouse in dex mood looks a little off compared to mirroring which it looks like a high def mouse with no rough edges or anything.

Don't really know as I've never had a quality problem here. But also never tried any other HDMI to Type-C cable so can't be sure if that's the cause either.
