Alright, I tried first with the stock rom: different usb cables, kies, installing uninstalling samsung drivers, double twist, on a mac and on windows 7, and nothing works, no matter what I tried, none of that could show me the notification bar asking for what to do with the usb connection. Of course I tried setting the phone on debugging mode and on mass storage, also ask everytime, etc.
Finally I decided to leave the stock rom and move to Cognition froyo, in order to discard a hardware issue. Thanks to Rom manager I could make it without needing the usb at all.
Once in Cognition v2.3b8 I crossed my fingers and looked to the sky (even considering that I'm atheist) and plug in the usb to my computer.... and nothing happens besides the phone charging.
Can I say right now that this is definitely a hardware issue?
Some people here are use to say, "if it's charging, definitely it's a drivers issue", but after moving to a new rom, and trying in three computers (two windows and one mac) it is a drivers issue that I can fix without buying a captivates motherboard?
Please help me out here and I'll buy you a beer, a blue moon one if you like ;P
Have you played with your USB settings; debugging, mounting SD card etc?

I'm pretty sure there's a problem with your USB cable if it's not the drivers. Try using a different cable and check.. Should work!
I am having the same issue and I took it to AT&T device warranty center and they found that the USB side on the phone had some water corrosion in it and therefore my warranty is voided. I also went down the path of installing drivers, different OS but this seems to be close. now If some can tell me how to clean this port...awesome
Is the water sensitive patch under the battery still white?

First make sure its not the usb cable. Main power leads in cable usually hold up but smaller wire leads are much more fragile and the only symptom you may get is either wont be recognized and/or usb registers as data connection on the dropdown menu. Ive had a captivate with a corrosion problem but Ive also had a Samsung cable that had broken shorted out data lead but still charged fine.
You can clean port with fingernail emery board cut to shape and stripped on one side of board to proper thickness. Its a five minute mod to a 99 cent board.

I've seen long threads of people who reported the same issue: no actual water damage, but a messed up USB port and their warranties being unjustly denied. Try cleaning the contacts in the phone's microUSB port with a coffee filter dabbed in rubbing alcohol, or scratching at them with a thin wire.
I'm currently having USB port issues with my brand new replacement Captivate (phone sometimes randomly thinks it's plugged in when it isn't, thinks it isn't plugged in when it is), haven't had any luck fixing them yet.
If there's no visual residue on the charging port, they cannot rightfully void your warranty. The captivate has 2 LDI's(Liquid Damage Indicators), one on the battery and one on the phone itself, behind the battery. As long as those two are white, and as long as there isn't a bunch of green crap on the charging port, they will replace it.
I work at AT&T, and we deal with this everrrrrrrrry day. 3 big rules with warranty swaps; LDI's need to be white, charging ports need to be intact and not corroded, and there needs to be no physical damage, any scratches or dings that you can feel with a fingernail are considered physical damage. We help people who terlet their phones get warranty exchanges sometimes, nothing an exacto knife and some raw effort can't fix. AT&T is a weak beast, be assertive and they will bend to your will.
In all honesty though, just make the charging port as clean as you can and call in. Ask for a supervisor, tell them it's a documented defect with a recent wave of Captivates, and you won't hang up until they exchange it for you.
well thanks for the help, now I'm gonna check the white indicators and if the phones usb needs to be clean

I had that problem with my brand-new second Captivate out of the box. Not going to deal with warranty and bull**** water damage accusations, this is being returned to the retailer first chance I get.
I've had something weird happen as well. I've had my Captivate plugged into my PC using USB Debugging at least 10 - 15 times today. I also clicked "Mount" so I could transfer files that I have backed up.
Now suddenly it stopped working. I have jumped around using every port on my laptop (all 4). I have noticed it's acted weird before.
But now (without anything plugged in at all) the laptop keeps popping up saying USB Device Not Recognized.....even though I'm not trying to plug anything in.
Should I reinstall the Samsung 32 bit drivers? I did uninstall Kies today because I had no use for it. It was annoying to have Kies open every time I plugged in.
I have a captivate lying around which have the same problem, i/e the USB cable works fine for charging but not for PC connectivity.
Since it is a development phone, I just reverted to using adb wireless widget.
Other than that, after reading this thread, it seems to be a common issue.
I got my phone exchanged (again) and no USB or GPS problems this time. I got a grainier-looking screen though...meh can't complain really, since this is the only Captivate I've owned that doesn't have any major/hardware-related problems.
My USB not working ended up being my laptop (not phone). I had to unplug the power supply....shut down for a few minutes.....reboot and it worked. I had tried reinstalling the drivers but it did nothing.

I appreciate the advice use some acetone to remove the green stuff but phone is still being difficult when trying to connect to the pc ...be nice if samsung came up with something so there wouldnt be a possibility that water would get in the port
I've had this problem since i got my phone, and i've had it for months now.
Always thought it was drivers.
My last try was with the new AIO captivate tool box app and the drivers their.
For those of you that got replacements how did you go about this.
just go to the store? Or is there a number to call to do it over the phone?
It's just annoying not being able to transfer pictures and such off my phone, hell it worked with my iPhone. I know you can setup wifi file transfers, but if i'm at a friends house it would be nice just to be able to plugin the phone and transfer files too it.
I fixed this problem selling out the phone. Not joke.
BUT, thing is, that the buyer, couple days after the purchase, told me that he fixed this issue by simply restoring the phone to the stock rom through odin 1 click.
Why I didn't try that easy fix? Simply because I thought that the phone was already in the stock rom :S
Lesson learned: always double check if you're in stock rom or not. (obviously you don't need to do this if your purchased the phone brand new!)
It's really weird, a week ago my phone suddenly freezing while I was out, I took the battery off and put it back but it was stucking on AT&T logo scree. I've tried that for few times nothing changed, put it away and the next day tried for few more times and this time came up (also recovery mode and 3 buttons didn't work too).
Everything was look fine but had a problem it was when I plug the USB cable it's just showing the charge status, means couldn't connect the Phone to PC ,I tried with some other cables and PCs, also put hair dryer if possibly water went in but the problem was from the phone.. also when took the USB off the charging status was keep going. first thing I thought it would be the ROM, I had some other ROM in the memory to I flashed to another ROM, but the problem was still there.
tried many times nothing changed, I was almost wanted to grab a new one, till 2 nights ago after a week while it was charging I suddenly noticed that it can connected, I straight away got backups copied to PC and flashed to Stock, now everything looks fine after few days and it works good.
any suggestion on that? is it could be water inside or something?
My ROM was Cognition 2.3 at that time
hope it's not gonna happens again.
I had the same problem and it was a bad USB port any phones made before December '10 have had a lot of problems. Warranty gave me a replacement without question.

I've gone thru I think 4 different Captivates, this one has been the best so far, no random shutdown, no phantom home key, has 3 button recovery...
However, after several months it quit being recognized by ANY pc I plug it into. Nothing happens, nothing on the phone, nothing on the PC other than starting to charge.
I've gone between Supernova, Apex, etc and so I don't think it's a software thing. Any ideas?
Did u try changing the cable n trying?

Ok so check it out. I've owned 4 captivates now and had this issue on two of them. I lost my first one. My second one I took back before my 30 days was up. Third one ran over by my car at the gas station...and now my fourth one was having the same problem. I tried cleaning it with alcohol and a twisted end of a q-tip, which was definitly nasty due to being left open all the time but the cleaning didnt fix my issue. So I decided that i would take a guitar pick and push or bend forward a little, the inside piece of the captivates micro usb. The piece in side that i bent is now almost in the middle of the charger slot. I was careful to insert the usb cord into it and could tell that it was much tighter. Then I noticed that it connected but only made it half way though the driver install. I picked up my captivate and set it on my keyboard so there is a slight pressure for the usb to push together and now my phone connects anytime. Now I know this isnt the proper way to fix your problem but it worked for me and has for two weeks now, every time. Give it a try but use something firm but soft. Nothing metal. Hope this is the fix u need. LMK if it works for anyone else who reads this Oh and I realize you got rid of your Captivate but this is the post I found when I searched! And yeah Cognition 5 v2 for me. I love it!
I've got a rooted Captivate and I was running CM7. Yesterday, I went into CWM and did a back up and I was going to flash a new ROM. The problem is I forgot to wipe everything, I just loaded the zip from SD card and now the phone turns on, shows the white AT&T screen then gets stuck on the Galaxy S cyanogen(mod) screen.
Here's the 1st problem!!
I cannot get the phone to go into recovery mode. I've tried every combination of volume and power buttons you can think of. I've also tried power volume and home button... That actually made the phone reboot so I had a glimmer of hope thrown in my face right before the phone just got stuck on the same galaxy cyanogenmod screen. If i hold those buttons down, it does an actual boot loop over and over...
Here's the second and much bigger problem!!
I have a broken Micro USB port. (of course I do, why would this just be easy for me?!?!) Before this issue, I would plug the phone in while it's off or on and it would show it charging, however the phone would not charge at all. If I plugged it into a computer, the computer would show that there is new hardware but it would never install correctly and I wouldn't be able to access it.
As of now, when I plug the phone in to either wall or computer, and I apply some force to the USB plug at the phone I can get the screen to light up like it's going to charge but it never turns green like it's charging, it just stays at that little spinny thing in the middle of the batter picture on the screen.
I've tried both odin2 as well as heimdall... The problem is that there is no way for me to get them to recognize the phone. Weird enough though, I can get the phone to go into download mode by playing the power, volume, plug in USB game. It takes a few times but I can get it to work. I'm pretty much stuck from there though.
I am working on finding someone to fix the USB port for me but it's micro soldering and has proven to be quite difficult for me to accomplish.
I'm pretty much out of options right now. Does anyone have any advice or super secret squirrel stuff that could force this dang thing into some sort of recovery mode??? I would greatly appreciate any help!!!!!
look in my sig USB PORT REPAIR

Thanks, I'm going to give this service a try to fix my headphone jack. I think the sensor is broken and thinks headphones are always plugged in.
What ROM are you running. as an I9000 ROM with out a proper kernel will do this!
I was running CM7 with a Glitch Kernel and I was trying to go to TeamHackSung's ICS PORT BUILD 14.
So just two days ago one morning i woke up unplugged my note from the wall charger and i noticed the charging symbol didnt go away. so i plugged it back in and took it out and it was still there i even reset it i rebooted it and it still showed it was charging somehow. After a cuple or reboots everything went back to normal. i ignored the problem now today two days later the note starts vibrating out of no were multiple times like crazy. It acts like if i was plugging the charger in and out of it one second it shows its charging next second its back to normal. It keeps doing this back and forths its bein 10mins now and its still vibrating. The only way to make it stop is to actually have it plugged into the wall. Oh by the way im running rocket rom v20 & abyass kernel 3.4 on it any suggestions? I allready called samsung they just said sorry they couldnt do anything about it

If nothing else works try a factory reset *2767*3855#, backup your files first and remove the sd card before doing that. I hope it returns to normal than.
Good luck
I think it was software related because i did a nandroid back up to my original stock rom and everything is fine now ive unpluged it and plugged it back in like 20 times now also rebooted it and it has not showed up again

Jesus and all saints bless you. Congrats!
Sorry to break your happy bubble, its not a software problem but rather a hardware defect in the usb port of the note. I have this problem and so do many others. This problem was also noted in many galaxy s2 phones. You can do all the resets or flash stock roms but the problem can come back at any time. My theory is the custom cover for the galaxy note. Mine has a small opening for the usb port so when I would push in my usb cable, it would settle in at a slight angle. this caused my usb cable connector to bent in a slight angle and hence, causing the pins inside the phone to also bend in the same angle. the dirt inside the usb pins can also cause the issue but I cleaned mine with alcohol and nail polish remover. My problem still exists. Then I tried the push the pins down towards the back of the phone and, again, no positive results. Now when I disconnect my usb cable, I push it down a bit and then slowly disconnect it from my phone. this is working fine for me so far. As soon as the usb part becomes available on ebay, I am buying it and installing it inside my note.
By the way, there are a few threads on this issue already.
good luck.

My stock rom M8 is answering and making calls in speaker mode all the time. Also, the home screen is allowed to rotate. I've read a bit about some other phones having this issue caused by a bad USB port. Has anyone reported issues like this with the M8? Plug in a USB cable and it's back to normal. The USB cable doesn't even have to be connected to anything on the other end for this to work. Unplug the USB and the screen comes on a couple seconds later with the issues back again. I'm hoping someone can tell me I don't have to replace my USB port to get it fixed.
Phone info:
Stock Sprint rom
Running ART (changed animation scales down to .5)
Only using 10B of 32GB of phone storage and 10.5GB of a 32GB SD
Factory reset the phone and it didn't fix
Using Tasker for managing Ringer profiles and mobile data connection
Chrome installed and updated
All phone updates are updated
Always use HTC charger and charging cord
Phone is babied (It sits in a case on a microfiber cloth on my desk at work )
HELP! My ears can't take anymore of the auto speaker mode.

It looks like your phone thinks its always on "Car Mode". Some cleaning of the usb connector might be able to fix it.
There is an extra pin in the phone usb connector that detects when its connected to car dock, desktop craddle or in usb host mode.if something is bridging it to the ground pin, this can happen.

I cleaned it with part of a Q-tip and some glass cleaner, then probed around in there with a needle. Nothing looked dirty. I ran a usb cable in and out a few times to see if it would work something out of the way. I'm leaving it dry out now (just in case it's a little moist) and we'll see what happens.

I spoke to HTC and our last resort before sending it in is to re-flash the stock Sprint RUU. Are there instructions on that somewhere? Or, is it better to just root now that it's somewhat busted?
