Hey guys! I bought an Xperia Z1 LTE from Phones4u (UK contract place) and took out their Phones4u care, basically if you break the phone, you can pay a fixed price and get a brand new phone either the same day if they have one, or sent straight to your home the next day. (I pay £5 extra a month for this)
Basically my question is if I have rooted my phone, do you think this plan will be void, also if I unlock my bootloader, what do you think/know?
Wondering this because I have my phone rooted right now but I'm looking to unlock my bootloader so I have more possibilities etc.
On an off note, the 'anti shatter' protector has a cut/slit in it. I've heard taking the protector off also voids your warranty, any way to get around this? Or do I have to live with a slit in my protector for aslong as I have the phone?
Attached is the lovely slit that is on my protector, driving me nuts!
Thanks!
Jake.
I know someone who works for Phone4U and their advice to me was stay clear of such things, they are basically a scam. Having removed your phone from the box is basically reason enough to void the policy, if they can't void it in a legit way they will literally use every excuse under the sun to get you to pay for a new handset.
I'm afraid to say you have 'insurance' from a phone company...a company who make their money from selling handsets and contracts.

Ok, so first hello to everyone! First time posters but I've been trolling around for a little bit, trying to get research on different phones offered by HTC and how they operate on each network, etc. and how customizable they are. Basically, I've concluded that the Tilt(Kaiser) is the one for me, graphics driver issue or not.
My only concern is that ATT does not offer a warranty for it, so what happens if I drop it in water, etc. Not saying that this is going to happen, but I always like to cover my bases. Does HTC offer an extended warranty, or any kind of protection at all? I don't want to end up paying 300 bucks and after a year or so get screwed because it is not working or something. I'm not really made of money, I mean, I can afford the phone, but not really buying another one, especially because you can't really (as far as I know) get a new one at the same price you'd pay for one with a new 2 year contract.
Anyway, sorry for the side track, and also if this was already answered, I hadn't seen it in my searches.
there was another thread regarding insurance issue...maybe theres info there for u
I would recommend you to check out Square trade. I am a veteran phone seller ( not really a pro ) and I always recommend my buyers with square trade. Their price is reasonable and their service is pretty much hassle free.
Beside that , since there is no warranty anyway, get the refurbished phone. Refurbished phone is checked twice , so the chance of defected item is low. With 2 years contract you can gat a Tilt for 150 bucks, which is a great deal compare with 450-550.
When I spoke to ATT last week, they told me by early june ALL phones (minus iphone of course..) will be insurable including the tilt...but the tilt and similar phones will have a higher deductable ($125ish if i remember right)

Warranty Exchanges
Wireless devices carry a one-year warranty from date of purchase. To make a warranty claim after the first 30 days from purchase, call 1-800-801-1101. Apple branded equipment is covered by Apple's one-year Limited Warranty; refer to apple.com for details
This link here is for a tilt on ebay. (sorry for the bad link before, should work now)http://cgi.ebay.com/UNLOCKED-TILT-8925-PDA-CELL-PHONE-HTC-WIFI-POCKETPC-GSM_W0QQitemZ140239057232QQihZ004QQcategoryZ3312QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem obviously used but the guy says it's in great condition though. Here's what I'm curious about. If you look about half way down the page he says that he can offer a two year warranty. Is that real? Is it trustworthy? I really need some advice here. Thanks. SPACE
Oh, and does anyone know if the brand new tilts come with a warranty in the box?
Ebay = warranty expires when the item was posted to you. remember it's a garage sale. Unless you like to take a chance, I'd avoid.

I dont see a link?
I think after u leave a positive feedback, he will forget about u immediately.
I bought my kaiser from ebay used - it had a few knocks on the housing so I just bought a replacement housing and keyboard and fitted it. Now my kaiser is as good as new!
I wouldn't bother with looking for warranty on ebay - I guess there is some risk but as long as you check out the seller reviews, things should go fine...
If you want to pay less, get one that's got a few scratches and is locked to a service provider - you can sort these things out yourself.
I've bought my last couple of phones on ebay and sold them there too.
If you are talking about the warrantee you pay for that is offered as a paypaa additional service, then it's fine. BUT, check their terms & conditions. Usually you can automatically check to see if an item is elligible. I have used it before, but I bought a brand new BlueRay, had a manufacturing defect, & was sent a check from Paypal.
ok, well I don't really trust their warranty and the pay pal thing I know nothing about. The used phones go for about 350 or so in general but I can get a new one in the box for 400. Do the new phones have a warranty of any kind in the box when you get them?
The warranty is provided through SquareTrade.com IF you decide to pay for said warranty.
Okay so my screen stopped working and I heard that tmobile has manufactorer warranty for one year even if you dont have insurance? Is it true?

Not true, I'm on my 5th tmo warranty replacement, bought my phone in march.... if this breaks I get the option to swap to any other color or an MT3G.... being a RadioShack employee we become a T-mo retailer in 20 days... ima play with for a couple weeks and maybe sometime before my warranty is up this one will somehow wind up defective...
And that applies to ANY new phone including new phones sent as warranty replacements, eg my current g1 was a new replacement so even though my orig purchase was march this one carries a one year warranty from the date I first put my sim in it.... 3 days ago

TRUE ...they jus send u a replacement & charge u $10 for shipping & u send ur old phone back in the box they sent ur new 1 in
BUT the new phone they will send u will be REFURBISHED!!! NO IF &S OR BUTS
Again not true the warranty replacement bin so to speak has a mix of new and refurb g1's its luck of the draw what you get... call tmo and ask when your warranty expires, if its a year from the date of you got your last new phone, then you got a refurb, if it's not then you got a new one, eg my phone has a one year warranty from one year from tthe day I popped my sim in it, not a year from the day I bought my 1st g1 in march
Tmo will send you a replacement, as others have said. If you call HTC, they too will cover it, however you have to send it to them and they will repair the problem(s) and send back your unit.
This is also the only way someone like me can get a G1 fixed, as I bought mine secondhand from CG.
I have ACTUALLY gone through this process with t-mo. I also now work for them. If you call them and you within the 1 yr waranty you get one sent though a third-party company which also handles insurance replacements. You can ask for a different collor, but it is pointless considering the device you recieve won't come with a batter, battery cover, or cables. As far as refurbs go it depends on what is in stock at the closest warehouse of said third-party. If there are new ones in stock that's what you get. You nor t-mo can ask for new versus refubished as already stated it's the luck of the draw.
The majority of what these loons say isn't true. Also, for future assurance of not paying out the ass for a new phone just pay the measley $4 a month incase it happens again next year.
P.S. ESKIMO if you are hoping your device might suddenly become "defective" what I have done is re-flash the old dreaming.nbh and the flash haykuro's broken SPL. Instantly causing your phone to brick (forever). Give t-mo a call and you'll have a new phone in a weeks time .
Lol thanks but that's only number one on my list of way's to break this sucker.... I did mention om on my 5th g1 in 5 months
And while tmo may not be able to request new or refurb the warranty replacement mgr I spoke to and have the cell number of, said they may know weather they are currently shipping one or the other out of a warehouse.... its a simple as checking the warranty attached to the IMEI 90 warranty (or remainder of current) is refurb 1yr is new.... every tiime
How is this possible, i got the insurance thing from t-mob and they told me, in case the phone was stolen, broken etc etc. i had to pay a deductible price of $130 ????
If your under warranty then the only thing extra insurance covers is loss or theft.... and technically water and screen dmg cuz you could LOSE it

cool, I *work* for t-mobile in the PDA dep (so I support G1 yay) and didn't even know this. Though I had suspected it, as I'd noticed the discrepancy in that some warranty replacements would show 1yr instead of 90days or existing as we always advise customers.

whoa several things wrong there. First, $4 isn't the cost for insurance, it's $5.99 if you get the extended warranty (which I certainly would if you're going to have it at all) and $4.79 if you only get insurance.
Also, if you are within the 1 year warranty, T-Mobile will replace your device, but we certainly don't refer you to anyone else to do it, and you can CERTAINLY NOT request a color change. There's no way for us to do it! If you have insurance, and the phone is physically damaged, is the only time we refer you to a Assurion. You claim to work for T-Mobile but you definitely don't seem to work in PDA or any other support department that actually does exchanges.

On this, this is incorrect. The insurance covers anything not covered under warranty. You can throw it against the wall, break the screen, cook it in the microwave, etc, and they'd still send you out a new phone for the deductible cost. You could theoretically even say you lost the phone, pay $130 for a replacement, and then sell the original on eBay for a profit! Though the prevent this type of thing by banning you from insurance if you have more than 2 insurance claims in 1 year (Assurion will do this, not T-Mobile)
EDIT:
Wow, after reading further in this thread..... you guys have a real confusion on how warranty, insurance, and multiple exchanges work! I'd say - call t-mobile and ask to speak to a rep and see what actually happens.
The basics:
1: You bought the phone from eBay or got it from "some guy": Call HTC and see what they can do. T-Mobile can't help you.
2: You bought the phone from TMobile: T-Mobile handles warranty, Assurion handles loss/theft/accidental damage. You can't change color or devices.
3: You've had multiple exchanges of the same device (more than 3 in 90 days): You can change the device, but you can't pick what device replaces it (we tell you) and you can't pick the color. You won't get a MyTouch for a G1 (lol, I wish). You'll likely get a Dash or Blackberry, but that is determined by the warranty system, and you can only take what it offers or your same device back.
4: You bought the phone from TMobile, you've had multiple problems, you hate the phone, etc and you DON'T like what the system offers you on step 3. Talk to Loyalty and they'll give you a cheap upgrade. Probably not to a MyTouch as that is kinda the same phone, and we know what you're doing.
5. You have a G1 and want a free MyTouch. Not gonna happen. Nope.
Just spoke to my local O2 shop (Maidstone) because the unofficial leather slip case I bought from them seems to be depositing black dye on the back of my HD7
They were very helpful and said bring everything in, boxes, receipts and all. I said great, and just supposing you decided to replace my handset, what about the £16 odd I have spent getting it unlocked?
Their reply: because you've unlocked the handset not through us, you've actually voided the warranty.
I pointed out that my issue is not with the handset but that the case they have sold me doesn't appear fit for purpose. They declined to voice an opinion but would make a decision when I've brought the phone and case in and they've seen it themselves. They did say they certainly wouldn't be refunding my cost of unlocking the handset whatever happens.
I've no issue with O2 for this stance if indeed it is their official stance but thought you all should know so you can factor it into your decision whether to unlock your handset.
thanks for the heads up

rubbish
never believe local shop staff
1. O2 will never know when you return it
2. its not a hardware or software modification, just like changing a setting, so no way can they refuse to honour a warranty
however its the height of cheek you asking to refund your unlocking cost. thats nothing to do with them (unless it was an O2 unlock)

That's great advice, I'll be sure to pass it on to them when I take my phone and case in and ask them what my options are...
At the end of the day, even if they refund the cost of the leather case and replace the handset, I'm still out of pocket. Why should I as the consumer be out of pocket because a product they sell has damaged or defaced one of my possessions whilst using it for it's intended purpose?

The phone was provided locked and it was YOUR desicion to pay to unlock it. If you wanted a free unlock you should have gone to O2.
I do agree with the other posters that unlocking the phone does not void the warrenty, they may just be confusing this with a phoen that requires a ROM flash to unlock (as in older phones).
However I am suprised you expect O2 to pay for you going elsewhere tp unlock your phone rather than being patient and going through O2! Unfortunatly you have to take some responsibility for YOUR actions as you are expecting them to take responsibility for theirs.
It's a bit like buying a new shirt, wearing a couple of times and then taking it back to the shop for a replacement and expecting them to pay the cleaning bill for it too.
OK, So i unlocked the bootloader on my phone and i said goodbye to my moto warranty, BUT when i took the phone out on a new contract with phones 4 u in the uk, i also bough separate insurance in which i pay £6 a month + The flat rate of £20 a month for calls and texts etc.
I wondered if i can claim on the insurance if i smash the screen for example even though the boot loader is un-locked?
If not, is there any point in paying the extra insurance costs?

You cannot void insurance.
Is it that you can void warranty but not insurance, then?
Providing that you live in europe, you can't void your warranty by rooting/unlocking your phone, no matter what BS manufacturers could tells. This is the law.

While you won't void the insurance by unlocking the bootloader, it's probably better for you to be putting that money away on your own. Worst case, you dig into it to replace your phone. Best case, 2 years down the line you have enough to buy a new phone. That's better than giving it to some company. If you never break your phone, you'll never see that money again. I guess if you have a history of being really clumsy, insurance is a good idea, but otherwise it's almost never a good way to spend your money.
