play services 4.1 - Moto X Q&A

is there a way to force this update? i'm still stuck on 4.0

Download it and install it manually:
http://www.androidpolice.com/2014/0...player-new-google-drive-api-preview-and-more/

people report mixed results with 4.1

I've noticed worse batter life since I updated, don't be in such a hurry.

4.1 removed the sharing of YouTube videos outside Google+. Every time I press Share it doesn't give me the app options, it goes straight to Google+.

Just an FYI for anyone installing 4.1. I've been using ART since the release of kitkat. 4.1 keeps force closing. Switching back to dalvik fixed it.

This is a bug that existed before this update. I had it before, where sharing from Youtube went straight to Whatsapp. What worked for me was to go to Settings -> Apps -> menu (top right corner) -> Reset app preferences.

I don't have this problem on 4.1 (manually updated). Pressing the share icon pops up the list of just about every app I have (dropbox, gmail, email, google +, etc..) as an option.

Where did you get the apk? I tried one and my phone wouldn't install it?

I rebooted my phone this morning and got the 4.1 update. Running it with ART all morning and no issues.

Is it 4.1.32? If so I guess it updated overnight without me knowing.

I have play services 4.1.31 from manually installing the apk. I guess I'll see 4.1.32 rolling out soon to replace it.

Well I had manually installed Google services update from the nexus 5 I think a while back. Maybe that's the update for nexus 5. How could I go back to what should be on the moto x?

ART will crash Google Play services 4.1.32 because 4.4.2 introduced changes in ART and its compiler. Google updated its apps to provide compatibility with the new ART, which seems to have broken old ART compatibility.
I switched my Nexus 7 LTE (2013) on 4.4.2 to ART and had no crashes with Play services 4.1.32. Switched my Moto X to ART, and Play services 4.1.32 crashed almost immediately. It caused issues in the background since Google Now relies on it, as well as any Wifi/network based location services. It'll kill your battery life.

[TIPS] Disable Nexus 7 OTA/Upgrade Nag

I have been trying to research a way to stop my Nexus 7 wifi grouper from constantly nagging me to upgrade to JellyBean 4.3. I find 4.3 rather underwhelming and the problems it has caused with flash crashing Dolphin or Xscope browsers almost constantly has left me no choice but to roll back to 4.2.2.
Now that I am content to stay with 4.2.2 I wanted to stop the constant upgrade notification and the process to do so isnt clearly laid out anywhere across many fragmented threads about it.
Here is how I disabled the upgrade prompt on the Nexus 7 grouper wifi 4.2.2 - You of course need to be rooted.
Get Autorun Manager from the market - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.rs.autorun&hl=en or http://goo.gl/xdLmO
Launch Autorun Manager, select Advanced mode.
Click the wrench, check off Show system entries and Enable system app disable.
Click the refresh icon to reload the process list.
Search for "systemupdate" and open the Google Services Framework entry.
Uncheck com.google.android.gsf.update.SystemUpdateService$Receiver
Reboot your tablet and be nag free.
I am not certain at this point if this disables market app update notifications but I would rather manually check for app updates than be constantly nagged to upgrade android.
Edit - Market update notifications for apps is functioning normally.
Enjoy.
Worked like a champ....thx
With the imminent release of 4.4 for the Nexus I wanted to remind people of this procedure for the purpose of disabling the upgrade prompt or restoring it if you followed the above procedure in the past.

i read this might cause partial wakelocks.. is this true? I absolutely hate 4.4.. the ugly white color, single screen settings, unstable apps, etc etc
It's absolutely ridiculous how google is shoving its stupid updates down our throats.
+ i deleted the downloaded zip update.. but when i go to about tablet > system updates > it still reads that download is ready.. what does that mean? anyway to reset and clean that crap?
No problem with wake locks.
I actually didn't need to freeze the update file.. The reason I was receiving an OTA notification after sideloading 4.4 was that the update that was trying to push was the smaller update (KRT16S) that followed KitKat (KRT16O).. which I was unaware of at the time. I wish they would put the build # on the update screen.. instead it just read 'you have an update to KitKat'. I assumed it was the same ota update that I already sideloaded.. not something that was new.
Also not sure if there's a way to get rid of that info for a new update in the settings. You can remove the notification reminder.. but under system updates, it will always read that an update is waiting. Best advice.. Don't look at that screen lol.
Best way to fix the OTA nag.
Use the OTA...
I was just receiving the OTA nag as well . Went into TB and froze the Google Services Framework and the icon is gone.

Yeah... that will get the job done... but it will 'break' a lot of other stuff as well. Google Services Framework does much more than just handle OTA's... so, not a good idea.

1. What other notifications might that also disable?
2. What is the file name of the 4.4 ota update and where can I find it so I can rename or delete it?
Thanks
After a reboot I got notification to update apps so It doesn't break playstore updates. Gmail, I can hear the sound when an email arrives but no notification. It will do for me, tho not sure if it's for everyone.

What about the one called
com.google.android.gsf.update.SystemUpdateService$SecretCodeReceiver ?
Does that need to be disabled too, or does it do something unrelated?
Why not just make a copy of system/build.prop, and change the version to one that was never released, like 4.1.3?
Thanks OP.....this worked for me. I'm sticking to 4.2.2 stock and rooted now. And no more nag.

[Q] Google Calendar

Hey everyone,
Is anyone able to get the Google Calendar to sync on their device? Every time I try, it asks me log into my account then fails to connect to Google's servers. The AOSP (included) calendar works just fine, just can't get Google's store version to work.
Ultimately, I would like to end up disabling the AOSP version and using the Google Version. I've tried clearing the cache, wiping calendar data, and calendar storage data. Just can't get it to go.
Has anyone else had this issue and figured it out?
BTW, Im developer edition, rooted, unlocked, and removed most bloatware, with the TWRP recovery, if any of that matters.
Thanks in advance.

First uninstall the google calendar that you downloaded from the play store.
Then go into settings>apps>all apps> and disable calendar. Then go into 'calendar storage' and choose force stop, then clear data.
REboot your phone. Install 'google calendar' from the play store, and you should be good to go.

I don't believe anything... at the moment. I believe the intent here is that the play store calendar can be updated more frequently and not with a system update (ie: 4.4 -> 4.4.1, 4.4.2)
Yep. Exactly

[Q] xperia t 4.3 push notifications

hi guys,
since the update to the 4.3 firmware, i'm not getting push notifications for facebook, skype etc. k9 mail and sms apps work just fine. i've added my accounts properly (google facebook etc.). tried disabling timescape and the sony social crap but that didn't help. i have no such problems on aftermarket roms (omni, cm).
i also downloaded push notification tester, and i can confirm that nothing happens after step 3 (trigger notification).
am i the alone with this? if not, is there a fix?

Thanks for that. Gave it a go, got a result similar to the thread maker's. Was a dream come true, really.
Then it came back again. Didn't do anything different, just eventually came back into play on next reboot.
Uninstalled updates from Play Services entirely and rebooted, got the same effect. I don't think it's 5.0 fixing it, just the other play(s) causing it. Still running as 'uninstall updates' version (whatever it is-- lemme check... 4.0.33) and I've not had an issue with it coming back on. If it doesn't last then I have no clue how to fix this.
Sorry to be a pest and bump / double post.
But I havn't had it come back since I did an 'Uninstall Updates' from Settings > Apps > All
I don't know why this would be so darned weird... But for anyone who hasn't tried it... I guess, sadly try it - and the link that Androidtweaker gave.
When I installed the Play Store that Androidtweaker linked, I did nothing but play games for like 2 hours on my phone - No issues. Kept playing, 4 hours later popped back up. I play Puzzles & Dragon's and link it to my Google+, so I thought they might have triggered all the play services since it is Google Games.
However I uninstalled updates and now it's the 1st of July where I am (3 days later), with Uninstall Updates and playing P&D with G+, I don't have any Play Service Issues.
Sorry I couldn't be of help to anyone who comes to this thread via google searching. Perhaps installing the latest Play Store then deleting cache/dalvik helped cut out some issue hidden within somewhere?...
In settings/location, set to device only. Its google location reporting causing the issue. Setting it to device only utilises just GPS for location.

Hangouts force closing

I've had my VZW Moto X for a week now and I'm having trouble with the Hangouts app. Every so often when I bring up Hangouts to read a new message, it'll pop up for a brief moment then kick me back out to my homescreen. Then will continue to do so every time I try to open the app back up until I restart my phone. I've tried clearing cache, app data, uninstalling updates, but nothing fixes it without a reboot... at least not consistently. And to top it all off... because Hangouts came preinstalled, I can't completely uninstall it to try a fresh install. This has happened at least once every other day since I've gotten this phone. I was running Dalvik until yesterday when i switched to ART. Happens using both. I used Hangouts on my 2013 Moto X without ever an issue. Any suggestions?
Strange. I had hangouts fc on me once. Today actually. But it was only once and worked fine afterwards. I refuse to update to the new hangouts. They ruined it
I had the same issue for the first day or two, then the force closing stopped.
Same here but rebooting clears it up
Sent from my XT1096 using XDA Free mobile app
reboot
Had this issue like 3 or 4 times on VZW as well. Only way to open the app to send a text was to reboot, very annoying...latest verzion of hangouts.
Still having this issue. Really annoying.
Sent from my XT1096 using XDA Free mobile app
So I found a quicker fix than restarting the phone. If Hangouts force closes, I open the stock android messaging app for just a moment. Then, once I've backed out of it, Hangouts magically works again without a reboot. Don't know why it works... but it does... at least on my device.
I really wish I could figure out what is causing this issue... It happens at least once a day and nothing seems to be a fix that works every time.
It seems to me that every time Hangouts force closes initially, I get a notification from the Play Store for an app update. Also, when it force closes, usually Messaging will start force closing as well if I try to open it. So incredibly frustrating...

Agree fully. I have not been able to associate it with anything but it happens daily. Drives me insane.
I'm tempted to do a factory reset, but I'm afraid I'll go through all the trouble to reset everything and it'll continue to happen. Are you using the stock launcher or something else?

Yeah I need to try and remember to get a log next time I see it.
It just happened again! I really think it's somehow tied to Play Store Update notifications. Any time I'm actively using Hangouts and it crashes, I will then immediately get a notification that I have one or more updates available in the Play Store. How could these two be connected and what can I do to sever this connection? I sideloaded the updated version of the Play Store... maybe uninstall updates?

Yeah and I was finally able to do some digging. It's actually tied into contacts somehow, which I never had noticed before. When hangouts is auto-closing so will people, phone, and generating a new text message. Basically anything looking for contacts. Still not sure why though.
I think that for some reason it's tied to Play Store notifications. I've also had Hangouts crash while sending a MMS picture message. Don't know if these crash instances are related.

Just go to app info and clear the data
It should work on most cases
